To promote Disneyland’s completely remodeled Fantasyland with entirely renovated and additional attractions, Believe You Can… And You Can! aired on television on this day in 1983. In the story, little Heather (Heather O’Rourke) is sad about moving away to Minneapolis. Her brother brings her to Disneyland but leaves her alone so he can meet his girlfriend. She heads over to tell her friends in Fantasyland that she is moving, but just as she approaches the castle, the drawbridge is raised with the sign “Fantasyland Closed.” Luckily the Fantasyland Problem Solver (Morey Amsterdam) magically appears to pop Heather into the new land which, despite his magic, is still under construction. But being the powerful magician he is, he shows her artist sketches and scale models of the new land and teaches her that when you believe in things, they can come true. When little Heather “believes,” the new Fantasyland still is not completed, but she does learn that she will not be moving away and will be able to be there in the future when the new Fantasyland opens. So the Fantasyland Problem Solver’s magic wasn’t as powerful as the Fairy Godmother’s, but at least little Heather was happy.
