The Disney Villains x The Blonds Fashion Show—A Wickedly Inspired Collaboration

By Beth Deitchman

An eccentric dognapper with a penchant for fur coats… An evil fairy whose signature headpiece looks as menacing as the dragon she transforms into… A tentacled temptress who doesn’t leave her watery lair without her sea-themed jewelry and shocking red lipstick… These villains made our spines tingle but they thrilled us visually, as well. We can’t forget how we felt the first time we encountered Cruella De Vil, Maleficent, and Ursula on screen—and neither can designers David and Phillipe Blond. They’ve looked to these and more wickedly wonderful Disney icons to inspire their Spring ’19 collection, which made its runway debut this past Friday during New York Fashion Week.

In addition to the aforementioned Disney divas, Disney fans will see hints of the Evil Queen, the Queen of Hearts, Dr. Facilier, and even Flotsam and Jetsam in The Disney Villains x The Blonds collection. The New York-based luxury fashion brand is a music-industry favorite, with Katy Perry, Gwen Stefani, Beyoncé, and Bette Midler, to name a few, putting their designs in the spotlight (literally). But before they were dressing some of the biggest names in entertainment, David and Phillipe Blond were Disney fans, just like us. “The Disney Villains style is iconic and has inspired us since childhood and throughout our career. The opportunity to collaborate with Disney and see these designs come to life on The Blonds runway is an absolute dream come true,” said David and Phillipe Blond, Designers, The Blonds.

“What drew us to working with Disney Villains are the complex attributes of the characters themselves,” said David Blond, who serves as creative director. “Often misunderstood, Disney Villains are flawed, imposing, and mysterious, and we loved the idea of taking these characteristics and translating them in a glamorous way, making them the heroes of our story.”

Led by the Disney Princess, Frozen and Villains team at Consumer Products Commercialization, and in close partnership with DPECP Franchise, Product Development, Special Events, Communications, Creative, Business Affairs and Legal, the Blonds collaboration showcased some of Disney’s most notorious villains reimagined during one of fashion’s most important weeks.

To put an authentically evil twist on the collection, David and Phillipe visited the Disney Animation Research Library and went back to the beginning of the villains’ stories, studying their mythologies and looking at the original concept art that informed the characters that came to life on screen.

In honor of last week’s runway show, we’ve put together our own rogues’ gallery that shows the collection’s progression from original artwork to designer sketch to Fashion Week fabulous.

Ursula
She may have coveted Ariel’s singing voice, but Ursula always had more style and confidence than one could ever fit into a conch-shell necklace, as seen in the earliest sketches. The Blonds have brought Ursula’s under-the-sea chic to the New York runway in the most wonderful way, even incorporating Flotsam and Jetsam into the collection. No poor, unfortunate souls here!

Disney Villains x The Blonds Fashion Show

Cruella De Vil
To see her is to take a sudden chill. Cruella finally got her Dalmatian-inspired coat and, rest assured, no puppies were involved in the creation of this spectacular garment! The striking red lining can be traced back to the earliest sketches, along with Cruella’s imposing shoulders and her signature black-and-white ‘do.

Disney Villains x The Blonds Fashion Show

Maleficent
Pink or blue are perfectly lovely colors for a party dress, but Maleficent made her impact with bolder hues of purple, green, and darkest black. The Blonds incorporated the unconventional shape of Maleficent’s headpiece into their designs, along with nods to her raven and the flickering flames she wields in dragon form. Well, well…

5 Frightfully Fun Ways to DisneyBound at Disney Parks this Halloween

By Leslie Kay

To help you get in the Halloween spirit, we invited Disney fashionista, DisneyBound creator, and DisneyStyle contributor Leslie Kay to share her top tips for DisneyBounding during the Halloween season.

The countdown to Halloween is on, but let’s be honest… you’re probably already celebrating! I’m a firm believer in playing dress-up year-round, but Halloween is when the Disney community truly comes alive! Here’s a handful of spooky-inspired DisneyBounds to get you ready for the Halloween season!

Let’s start off our Halloween DisneyBound roundoff with a look from the Pumpkin King, himself! Tim Burton’s The Nightmare Before Christmas turns 25 this year, so why not celebrate in style? Jack Skellington rocks a signature pinstriped suit look—so start off with a black blazer and a pair of black trousers! Trade in his bat bow tie for a black-and-white pussycat bow blouse! To top off this look—add in a few spooky accessories that you think Jack would wear, like skulls, pumpkins, or bats.

DisneyBounding

If she doesn’t scare you, no evil thing will! Cruella De Vil is a simple and stylish DisneyBound that anyone can rock this Halloween season! To start, pull something out of your closet that reminds you of her mostly black-and-white wardrobe. I traded her large fur coat for a simple white denim jacket. Don’t forget about her teal jewelry—that detail is often overlooked! To top it all off, I added a black-and-white Cruella De Vil beanie so that you can rock her ’do without having to dye your hair or wear wig!

DisneyBounding

We can’t forget the Halloween Disney classic The Adventures of Ichabod and Mr. Toad! The Headless Horseman is one of my favorite spooky DisneyBoundable characters because it can easily feature some fall wardrobe staples! Start your Headless look off with a burgundy cape cardigan to keep you cozy on those chilly autumn days! Keeping with his equestrian style, add a pair of black knee-high riding boots. Odds are… you have a head—so you won’t be able to achieve that truly headless look, but you can finish off your Headless Horseman DisneyBound with a jack-o’-lantern accessory, like the one he carries when he terrorizes Ichabod!

DisneyBounding

It’s good to be bad, so why not pull some villainous vibes from your closet this Halloween season? Ursula is a character that can be easily Bounded, using just some simple color blocking! Black and a pale purple are her main colors, and then add a white beanie to match her hair. No Ursula Bound is complete without her golden seashell necklace and some tentacle accessories!

DisneyBounding

You didn’t think we were going to do a Halloween style roundup without featuring a look from Hocus Pocus, did you? For this Winifred Sanderson Bound, I went a little ’90s grunge to match the vibe of the film. Her dress is purple and green, so play with layers to achieve that look. Not only is the color of this dress perfect—but the lace-up detail on the neckline reminds me of the corset stitching on her gown. Finish off your Bound with witch-y accessories like Winifred’s Book of Spells in necklace-form!

DisneyBounding

I hope this article got your spooky wheels turning! From the Pumpkin King to the Sea Witch—there are so many options out there for you to show off your Halloween DisneyBounding style! Happy Halloween, everyone!

New Details About High School Musical TV Series Coming to Disney’s Direct-To-Consumer Streaming Service

By Jocelyn Buhlman

High School Musical fans, getcha head in the game! It’s time to return to East High School with High School Musical: The Musical, a 10-episode series that will debut on Disney’s upcoming direct-to-consumer streaming service.

Casting has just begun for this new series that explores the musical mishaps of a group of East High students in a stage performance of… none other than the original High School Musical! The show will be shot in a “documentary”-style format, chronicling the teenage drama of the cast, both on- and off-stage.

Characters include Ricky, the recently dumped class clown who decides to overcome his heartbreak by (what else?) auditioning for the school musical in an attempt to win back his lost love. Unfortunately for Ricky, his ex-girlfriend Nini is a natural performer who’s finally found the courage to also audition for the musical! If you thought that was already dramatic enough, wait until you meet no-nonsense E.J., the son of two lawyers (so that means twice the ambition!) who is not only Ricky’s rival for the big role, but also the rival for Nini’s heart!

The rest of the cast is just as spirited: What’s a High School Musical story without a drama queen? You can bet on “wonderstudy” Gina to channel Sharpay Evans’ flair for theatrics, but with less pink and more ruthlessness. Joining the cast will also be Ricky’s total skater dude BFF Big Red, new student and aspiring songwriter Ashlyn, overly-caffeinated student choreographer Vikram, and the mysterious new drama teacher Miss Jenn.

Start warming up your vocals because each episode will feature a new version of one of the classic songs from High School Musical (and we know you have them all memorized), along with a brand-new original song!

The series will be executive produced by Oliver Goldstick (Pretty Little Liars) and Oscar®- and Golden Globe®-nominated screenwriter Tim Federle (Ferdinand). There’s no premiere date announced yet, but we’ll bop any future news right to the top of your newsfeed as soon as it breaks!

We’re On Galaxy’s Edge Over This Star Wars News From Disney Parks

Oga Garra, mysterious alien proprietor, is welcoming all pilots, bounty hunters, smugglers, locals, and galactic travelers to her cantina at Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge at Disneyland Resort and Walt Disney World Resort in 2019.

At Oga’s Cantina at Black Spire Outpost, the spot where all the local rogues will be hiding out, you’ll have to watch your back (unless you’re strong with the force), because you never know who may be lurking around those dark corners.

After you’ve won another round of sabacc, you can also visit RX-24, Star Tours’ most famous first-time pilot who has, perhaps, found a job he’s a bit better suited for. You can catch this droid you’re looking for as he provides musical entertainment that you can only get at the local intergalactic cantina.

We’re definitely over the moon, Tatooine, and Hoth about all things Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge, and this is just a taste of everything that’s coming to our galaxy much, much closer to home.

There’s a New Member of the Herd at Kilimanjaro Safaris.

Meet Aella, the newest addition to the savanna at Kilimanjaro Safaris in Disney’s Animal Kingdom. The two-month-old Masai giraffe calf was born on June 29—at five-feet-tall! She’s named after an Amazon warrior, and she’s already proving the name’s a great fit with her brave, bold, and adventurous spirit.

She’s the youngest and smallest giraffe (making her pretty easy to spot), and she’s beginning to explore more and more, venturing a few steps away from her mother, Lily. We’re so excited to see how far she’ll go!

Learn more about Aella and her family here, and officially meet her in her debut video above!

Samsung and Disney Team Up to Create AR Emoji Magic for the Galaxy S9 and S9+

We know you love Disney (we do too!) and that means that you love Disney characters, whether they’re in the park, on film, or on TV! But, now you can experience them in a whole new way: Through augmented reality (AR), your favorite characters will be brought to life as emojis—and you can share them with friends in brand-new exciting ways!

Samsung Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9+ users will be able to access classic Disney characters (Mickey Mouse and Minnie Mouse, who else?) as well as characters from The Incredibles, Zootopia, and Frozen through the AR Emoji mode on their camera.

These AR Emojis use deep learning and facial recognition technology to map more than 100 facial features, producing a 3-D replica that allows you to create fun, customizable messages for your friends—oh boy!

There’s “A Great Big Beautiful Tomorrow” on Disney Junior!

Originally penned for the Carousel of Progress, the Sherman brothers’ classic “There’s a Great, Big Beautiful Tomorrow” was featured back in May on a special episode of Mission Force One. And now, a new music video debuted for this classic tune, featuring clips from the series’ “The Space Station Situation” episode.

Shanghai Disney Resort is Bringing a “Mouse Party” to the Shanghai Tourism Festival

For the fifth year in a row, Shanghai Disney Resort will participate in the Shanghai Tourism Festival, and this year they’re debuting a brand-new float! “Mouse Party” is a newly designed float that’s led by none other than the mouse, the myth, the legend (and the birthday boy!): Mickey Mouse.

The float, adorned with glowing stars, Mickey-shaped balloons, a huge spinning cake, and an illuminated castle made of party hats will make its debut on Saturday, September 15, at the 2018 Shanghai Tourism Festival’s Grand Opening Parade.

After that, the float will spread its magic a bit further as it crosses the city, bringing the celebration to several areas of Shanghai from September 16 through October 6.
