Red Alert: Directors, First Image for The Mandalorian Revealed!

It was news heard ’round the galaxy when word got out that there’d be a brand-new live-action series—based on the Star Wars universe—created for Disney’s upcoming streaming service. Well, we now have a bit more info on just what to expect!

Production has begun on The Mandalorian, a show set after the fall of the Empire and before the emergence of the First Order. The plot—as recently revealed by writer and executive producer Jon Favreau (Disney’s upcoming live-action The Lion King) on his Instagram account—will follow the travails of a lone gunfighter in the outer reaches of the galaxy, far from the authority of the New Republic. The show’s first episode will be helmed by Dave Filoni (Star Wars: The Clone Wars and Star Wars: Rebels); look for later episodes to be directed by other TV and film luminaries including Deborah Chow (Jessica Jones), Rick Famuyiwa (Dope), Bryce Dallas Howard (Solemates, Jurassic World), and Taika Waititi (Thor: Ragnarok). Check out the awesome first-look image of the title character, above.

Stay tuned for more info on The Mandalorian as we draw ever closer to its sure-to-be-epic streaming premiere…

The New #DreamBigPrincess Video Series Shows What Can Happen When You Follow Your Dreams

By Beth Deitchman

Once upon a time (as so many of the most inspiring Disney stories begin), Emily Blunt, Jennifer Lee, and Kathleen Kennedy were young girls with dreams—big ones—that led them to become, respectively, a Golden Globe® Award-winning actress; an Oscar®-winning filmmaker and chief creative officer at Walt Disney Animation Studios; and the president of Lucasfilm and producer of three of the highest-grossing movies ever. These three trailblazing women have now joined forces with leaders in the worlds of science, technology, business, sports, and more to inspire the next generation to “dream big.” You can hear these role models tell their stories in the brand-new #DreamBigPrincess global video series launching today.

There’s also a pretty inspiring story behind the video series. To create these digital shorts, Disney provided mentorship support to leaders from Girl Up, a leadership initiative founded by the United Nations Foundation that enables girls around the globe to become activists and advocates for gender equality. Twenty-one young filmmakers from 13 different countries interviewed 20 amazing women and asked them to share their tips for success and provide a glimpse at what’s possible.

The star of the upcoming feature Mary Poppins Returns, Emily Blunt, was interviewed by 17-year-old Girl Up leader Marissa Torre. “There’s a line in Mary Poppins where she says anything is possible, even the impossible,” says Blunt. “I think that really symbolizes what dreaming big is all about, the idea if you want something big enough that the universe is going to conspire to give it to you.”

Dream Big Princess

“Dreaming big is one of the most important things any of us can do—to keep aiming higher,” says Kathleen Kennedy, who spoke with Maud Webster, age 16, from the UK. “The #DreamBigPrincess series is giving a voice to a group of talented young women, helping them tell stories that kids can learn from, whatever their ambition.”

Dream Big Princess

Disney fans can get involved and support the #DreamBigPrincess campaign and video series in several simple and fun ways. From now through November 20, 2018, for every like or share of a video or photo posted publicly with #DreamBigPrincess on Facebook, Instagram, or Twitter, Disney Worldwide Services will donate US $1 to Girl Up to support girls’ leadership and empowerment (up to $1 million). The #DreamBigPrincess Global Photography series that launched last year unlocked a $1 million donation to Girl Up in less than five days.

And tomorrow, October 11, guests at Disney parks around the world are invited to Disney bound as their favorite female characters in celebration of the International Day of the Girl. Enjoy incredible thrills in an outfit inspired by Elastigirl; bravely take on exciting attractions in a Merida-inspired ensemble; or wear your kindness on your sleeve in honor of Cinderella. The possibilities are limitless, just like the futures kids can imagine. Fans can also visit their local Disney store on Saturday, October 13, to participate in in-store Dream Big, Princess events.

Dream Big Princess

You can view the entire #DreamBigPrincess video series at Disney.com/DreamBigPrincess, as well as learn more about the young filmmakers and their accomplished subjects, who include the first Moroccan woman in history to join NASA Johnson Space Center, a Brazilian World Cup Skateboarding champion, a Canadian member of Parliament, and an art director for Shanghai Disneyland.

Dream Big Princess

“The #DreamBigPrincess series documents a host of inspiring stories and diverse experiences, but the common message is clear,” says Zenia Mucha, senior executive vice president, Communications, The Walt Disney Company. “Having a big dream is the first step on the path to success, and positive role models are critical in helping you continue on that journey—whether that’s a fictional entrepreneur like Tiana or a real-world success story like any of the women in this series.”

A Wicked Walk through Freeform’s Hocus Pocus– and Nightmare-themed Pop-Up with D23

By Jocelyn Buhlman

‘Twas a long time ago… Well, maybe not as long as it seems, that D23 Members went to a place we’ve seen only in our dreams. Dressed in their Halloween best and ready to pose, our members prepared to enter Freeform’s Halloween House, a totally immersive experience celebrating the films Hocus Pocus and Tim Burton’s The Nightmare Before Christmas, just in time for Freeform’s 31 Nights of Halloween. Join us as we recount their journey into the mysterious depths of this haunted habitation.

First, guests stepped into a mysterious green tunnel, emerging on the other side to face the front door and an ominous sign: Oogie Boogie’s Lair. Did they dare enter and face the boogeyman himself?

Mr. Oogie Boogie’s Lair

Freeform's Halloween House

Covered in skeletons and chains (with a pair of dice or two), Oogie Boogie’s lair was a neon-blacklight wonderland, with a chilling challenge for guests who enter. Did they risk spinning the wheel and discover whether they would win a trick or a treat? With the image of Oogie Boogie hovering over them (complete with all sorts of icky creepy crawlies), only the brave tried their hands at spinning the wheel to discover what prize was in store.

Dr. Finklestein’s Lab

Freeform's Halloween House

Once guests braved Oogie’s lair, their triumphant treats in hand, they walked around the side of the house to another scene straight out of Tim Burton’s The Nightmare Before Christmas: Dr. Finklestein’s Lab. Guests no longer had to imagine what it was like for poor Sally, living as one of Finklestein’s experiments. D23 Members were able to strap themselves to the operating table and become spooky experiments of their own!

Graveyard

Freeform's Halloween House

Outside of the house, shrouded in mist and mystery, lay the graveyard complete with tombstones for some of our favorite Halloween classics (that you might be able to catch during Freeform’s 31 Nights of Halloween, no less!).

Freeform's Halloween House

What graveyard would be complete without our favorite ghost dog? Zero’s skeleton took a rest while his canine spirit was out haunting Halloween Town. But if guests listened closely, they could still hear the faint barking of Zero as he romped around on his adventures.

Freeform's Halloween House

One grave in the graveyard sat empty—because it was a photo opportunity for guests! D23 Members channeled their best Billy Butcherson (complete with raggedy clothes and crazy hair, if they wished!) to snap a pic of themselves rising from the dead, almost as though they were under one of Winifred Sanderson’s spells themselves.

Winifred’s Statue

Freeform's Halloween House

Billy Butcherson may have been out of his grave, but for now Winifred Sanderson is safely frozen in stone. Naturally, D23 Members took the chance take a pic with Winnie, pretending to run away in fear or matching her shocked pose perfectly. Now we just have to hope that no one ever tries to bring her back to life again!

Lock, Shock, and Barrel’s Bathtub

Freeform's Halloween House

December is still two months away, but it’s never too early to kidnap Sandy Claws. That’s why guests were devilishly delighted to hop into Lock, Shock, and Barrel’s bathtub, wearing the trio’s iconic masks—if they dared! D23 Members channeled Oogie Boogie’s favorite henchmen (and one of our favorite modes of transportation) in this perfect photo moment of holidays colliding.

Spiral Hill

Freeform's Halloween House

Is there any moment from Tim Burton’s The Nightmare Before Christmas more iconic than Jack Skellington’s walk along the spiral hill? Naturally, D23 Members had to pose for this perfect picture channeling the pumpkin king himself.

Sanderson Sisters’ Cottage

Freeform's Halloween House

After guests finished exploring the graveyard, they rounded the corner and entered the most chilling of all the rooms: the Sanderson Sisters’ cottage! All the witchy sisters’ relics are just where they left them last, from the bubbling cauldron boiling up a mysterious green concoction, to Winifred’s spell book full of interesting incantations. And what’s that in the corner? Why, it’s the Black Flame Candle! Guests needed to be careful if they tried to light it—Thackery Binx lurks nearby to make sure the sisters never return to our world again.

Freeform's Halloween House

If guests preferred to channel the Sanderson Sisters rather than summon them, the final photo op brewed up the perfect opportunity to recreate the original Hocus Pocus poster! Complete with cloaks and brooms to make the picture perfect, D23 Members cackled with delight at the chance to recreate this spellbinding poster.

And just like that, D23 Members had survived it all! From the kooky to the spooky, every corner of the Halloween House had been explored. Would anyone believe the wonders they saw? Their photos shared some of the mystery, but only those who attended will really know the magic for sure.

Want to join in the celebration of Tim Burton’s the Nightmare Before Christmas and Hocus Pocus? We’re celebrating both movies’ spooktacular anniversaries all month long with articles, recipes, exclusive interviews, crafts, and more!

Andi Mack Stars Discuss that Um-Believable Cliffhanger

By Beth Deitchman

It’s the “Um…” that’s had fans holding their breath, and we’ll finally find out what Andi and Bex said next when Andi Mack returns for its third season tonight on Disney Channel (8 p.m. ET). “I think if season two was the peak of a mountain, we get to see the fallout in season three,” says Lilan Bowden, who plays the title character’s super-cool mom. “We get to see all the consequences of that scene play out over season three for Bex.”

As “Bexie” fans surely recall, the second season culminated with a would-be proposal, as Bex and Andi presented Andi’s dad, Bowie, with a birthday cake hiding an engagement ring inside. But before Bex (and Andi) could ask him to marry them, Bex learned of Bowie’s opportunity to rejoin his band and head out on tour. Bex’s and Andi’s failed attempt to abandon the plan led to Bowie finding the ring and asking for an explanation… bringing us back to that unbelievably momentous “Um…”

Andi Mack

Of course, that’s not the only burning question needing to be answered in season three. Fans  wonder about the status of Andi and Jonah’s relationship once he returns from summer camp, as well as what’s in store for Andi’s BFFs, Cyrus and Buffy. And then there’s Cece, who’s been on her own since Ham went off to see the world. Lauren Tom is excited for fans to see the makeover her character gets in the first episode, which is far more reflective of her own bright and colorful style than the monochromatic, voluminous outfits Celia tended to wear in seasons one and two. Now that Bex is settling into her role as parent, Tom says, “Celia can actually assume more of a grandparent role in the traditional sense of being able to just loosen up, have fun, and spoil the kids a little bit more. She can now, maybe, turn her attention to a little bit more self-care.”

Andi Mack

Bowden and Tom act alongside an incredibly talented cast of teen actors, including Peyton Elizabeth Lee as Andi, Joshua Rush as Cyrus, Sofia Wylie as Buffy, and Asher Angel as Jonah, and they’ve become a close-knit on- and off-screen family over the last three years of filming on location in Utah. A mom of two teenage sons herself, Tom says of her young co-stars, “I’m beyond proud of who they are as actors, but more importantly who they are as people.” Tom’s two families come together in a fun and exciting way this season, when her son makes his acting debut in an upcoming episode. “It was just thrilling for me to have him on set and be able to introduce him to everyone,” Tom shares. “He had such a good time.”

Andi Mack

According to Bowden, “After set, we can spend eight, 10 hours shooting that day and then we’ll all be like, what are we doing now? We’re not tired of each other.” There are lots of dinners, movies, and evenings spent at the local roller skating rink, and Bowden treasures these experiences as much as the work the cast is doing on screen. Beyond accolades for the series, red carpet events, and Disney Parks adventures, it’s a much more personal memory that stands out as Bowden’s favorite of her time with Andi Mack. “There was one night where Peyton and I had a wonderful time roller skating at the rink and I was driving her home. It was nighttime and we’re in my car on the freeway and Peyton’s playing all these songs that she liked—but they’re from my time, like Foo Fighters and all these songs that I listened to when I was her age. Both of us know all the lyrics to all the songs that she’s playing and the windows are down and we’re just singing at the top of our lungs,” Bowden recalls wistfully. “I just thought, oh my gosh, this is so special for me and it could have totally been a scene in Andi Mack, too. It just really made me treasure the whole show and meeting her.”

Andi Mack

Andi Mack’s multigenerational cast of characters may be just one of the reasons why the series has connected across generations of viewers. Bowden loves that Bex is in the “sweet spot” that allows the character to feel relatable to both kids and parents alike. She notes, “I felt like with many shows that I watched growing up, the parents were the people that you have to escape or avoid. They’re not wise to your shenanigans, and that’s the whole goal.” That’s far from the case on Andi Mack, where Bex, Bowie, Celia, and Ham each have their own lives and unique challenges.

“[This series] has so much that a person can relate to, and if you’re looking to feel a little less alone and be able to connect to something authentic, then this would be your show,” Tom says. “The issues that come up are presented with so much love and compassion, and I think that’s we all want at the end of the day, is to be able to connect with other people and to feel like we belong.”

13 Bewitching Props from Hocus Pocus

By Kelsey Williams, the Walt Disney Archives

‘Tis time! 2018 marks the 25th anniversary of the spooktacular film Hocus Pocus. To celebrate the occasion, prepare thyselves to view some of the most bewitching props and costumes from the Walt Disney Archives collection. Don’t be frightened; remember “…it’s just a bunch of hocus pocus!”

“This is the spell book of Winifred Sanderson. It was given to her by the devil himself. The book is bound in human skin and contains the recipes for her most powerful and evil spells.”

Hocus Pocus item from the Walt Disney Archives
Three variations of Winifred’s iconic spell book were created: two practical books—eye open and eye closed—and one book with a moveable eye manipulated via remote control. Details on the book include human fingers on the spine, six metal serpents adorning the front and back, a claw closure clasp, and stitching.
Hocus Pocus item from the Walt Disney Archives
The practical spell books don’t just have visually stunning covers, the inside is filled with some of the witches’ most sinister spells and recipies. Contained in the Manual of Witchcraft & Alchemy is the life potion formula to make the Sanderson sisters live forever by stealing the souls of children.

Winifred’s beloved book laid to rest in this case in the Sanderson Witch Museum. The detailed stand was custom built to sit in the Sanderson house.

What good is the perfect formula without a cauldron to contain the concoction? The recipe for the Sanderson sister’s life potion is “Bring to a full rolling bubble. Add two drops oil of boil. Mix blood of owl with the herb that’s red. Turn three times, pluck a hair from my head. Add a dash of pox and a dead man’s toe… newt saliva… One thing more and all is done. Add a bit of thine own tongue.”

Never insult a Sanderson. This is one of two cages that were used to contain bullies Jay and Ernie after they called Winifred, Mary, and Sarah “ugly.” This scene, along with all material filmed inside the Sanderson’s house, was shot on Stage 2 at The Walt Disney Studios lot in Burbank.

Designed by famed costume designer Mary Vogt, each Sanderson sister has their own personal style to reflect the character. Winifred’s costume is timeless with an air of medieval style, showcasing deep velvet green to compliment her red hair. Mary’s costume is very natural, made of homespun fabric in rich and deep colors. Sarah’s costume is light, airy and ethereal. Vogt choose this color pallet to help distinguish them from previous on-screen witches.

“Broom, ho!” With two simple words the Sanderson sisters take to the skies. Sarah Sanderson (played by Sarah Jessica Parker) rode this double ended broom early in the film while chasing after Max, Dani, and Jenny in the cemetery.

After their brooms were taken by young trick-or-treaters, the sisters had to be resourceful when it came to taking flight. Winifred used a household broom, Sarah a mop, and Mary (portrayed by Kathy Najimy) had the honor of utilizing this vacuum to soar through the air. “Come! We fly!”
Hocus Pocus item from the Walt Disney Archives
Before closing due to a lot of spooky activity, this lighter was sold as a souvenir in the Sanderson Witch Museum. Max Dennison used the lighter on All Hallows Eve to light the Black Flame Candle, summoning the Sanderson sisters from the dead.

Not all witches are bad. This hat was part of 8-year-old Dani Dennison’s (played by Thora Birch) Halloween costume in the film.

The Black Flame Candle’s magic only brought the Sanderson sisters back for Halloween night. In the words of Bette Midler’s character Winifred, they had to “suck the lives out of the children of Salem before sunrise. Otherwise, it’s curtains! We evaporate! We cease to exist!”  This statue showcases Winifred’s final moments, grasping Max while trying to consume his life force after falling off her broom onto the cemetery ground below.

Before becoming Hocus Pocus, an early working title for the film was The Halloween House. The Walt Disney Archives has a few variations of the script on file, including this one from 1987 which showcases the earlier title.

Many of these spellbinding pieces will be on display at the El Capitan Theatre in Hollywood starting October 11, and be sure to go see them before the sun rises on November 1 and they turn to dust. Dost thou comprehend?

Everyday Tools Create Disney Parks Magic that You Need to See

By Karina Schink

It’s a hot summer day at a Disney park. With a Dole Whip in hand and three refreshing descents down Splash Mountain, you don’t even feel the sweat. You’re walking around the park when suddenly, an unexpected blend of pixie dust wafts over your day.

The sun catches a glimmer of water. It’s not a puddle you have to avoid, but precise lines, curved with care. You take a few steps back and you’re greeted by the familiar face of Mickey Mouse, drawn in nothing more than water on the ground before you.

Melody Anderson - water art

That is the kind of experience that water artists like Melody Anderson deliver to guests every day at Disneyland. “It’s definitely a special magic,” Anderson says of water art at Disney.

Melody Anderson - water art

So, what exactly is water art? Well, it’s just that, a special kind of magic. Water art is created in the Happiest Place on Earth by members of the Custodial team, who use just a broom and a bucket of water to draw favorite Disney and Pixar characters on the ground, often when you least expect it!

With humble tools reminiscent of Walt’s pencil and paper, these custodial artists “draw an exact set of lines that result in the precise view of the character,” as Anderson explains it. Mickey Mouse and Minnie Mouse, Donald Duck, Goofy, and a couple of new Pixar favorites are some of the likely suspects to appear out of these lines.

Melody Anderson - water art

How does water art fit into the Disney picture? Anderson draws a parallel to Walt Disney himself. “Disneyland, and everything Disney, started in the heart of that 7-year-old boy who wanted to create something out of nothing.” Her sentiment could not be more true, because these magical 15-minute sets (before the water artists return to their daily duties) are soaked in that idea of creating something out of nothing. Guests frequently ask Anderson what is in her bucket, what is she using to create these mini-masterpieces? Her answer is always the same and always quite simple: water.

Melody Anderson - water art

Anderson cannot remember a time guests weren’t delighted to encounter her or her colleagues’ creations. Water artists have normal custodial duties that take up the majority of their day, but a select few have been trained to take their painting chops to the streets of Disney to paint these temporary treasures. If you happen to catch Anderson in the process, you might find her drawing Donald Duck, one of her favorites to create, or maybe Winnie-the-Pooh, the next character she plans to master. Specific characters are chosen to be the stars of the show through a partnership with Walt Disney Imagineering and the Animation Academy.

But, as is frequently the case in the wonderful worlds of Disney, every magical moment is endowed with something that makes it even more magical. For Anderson, that extra boost comes when she can bring a guest into the process. Custodial artists will often ask guests—both young and young-at-heart—to get involved by contributing to the artwork or following directions to paint their own Pluto or Goofy. But for Anderson, a recent interaction made an impression that has endured long after the artwork faded away.

Melody Anderson - water art

When she saw a young boy waiting for the parade with his mother, caught in a “grumpy cloud,” Anderson knew she had to try to do something to turn his day around. While Anderson has created water art for three years, drawing the iconic duo—Mickey Mouse and Minnie Mouse—has always intimidated her, but when she learned that little boy’s favorite character is the latter, she knew what had to happen next.

Melody Anderson - water art

“It was on. I was going to draw Minnie Mouse for that boy,” Anderson states. “So, I went and got [my tools], I drew Minnie for him, and that boy smiled. That guest came out from under his sad cloud… and with the tools that Disney gave me, I was able to help that guest find his way back to happy. And to me, that’s one of the biggest victories you can have as a cast member.”

This is only one of the examples that Anderson had to offer about the many times she has produced water art and the memorable reactions she’s gotten from onlookers. Whether it’s a child who gets involved and claims their own title of “Junior Character Water Artist,” or an adult who tries his or her own hand at a painting, every guest interaction has been meaningful to her.

“I appreciated that water art built the bridge between me and that little boy’s heart,” Anderson shares.

Melody Anderson - water art

Since the ‘90s, artistic moments such as these have taken many different forms, in a variety of media that ranges from leaves and traffic cones, to now, the most common form: water—specifically water that has melted off of the outdoor vending carts, so no water goes to waste.

Melody Anderson - water art

Many guests may know of these magical moments, but have yet to catch one. Anderson suggests checking shaded spots when it’s in the summer, and paying extra attention at night. Water artists will look for the best locations, depending on the level of heat of the pavement and how long they think their art will last. But, ultimately, it’s just the magic of Disney that will allow you to stumble across these delightful works of art, and hopefully meet the artist, as well (even though some practice what Anderson calls “stealth water art” and choose to watch guests discover their art from afar).

So, what it all really comes down to are expectations… and expecting the unexpected.  The 7-year-old with a pencil and paper, a Disneyland cast member with a broom and a bucket. Magical somethings truly can come out of nothing, and can make for the best surprises of all.

Now Casting Spells: Freeform’s 31 Nights of Halloween—Plus More in News Briefs

By Courtney Potter

Freeform gets into the spooky spirit this month, and we have the scoop on ABC’s upcoming celebration of Mickey’s 90th… Read more, along with other news from around Disney, in this week’s news briefs!

Freeform’s 31 Nights of Halloween: Scaring Up a Month of Fun!

Well, friends, it seems that nine full months of 2018 are now in the record books—which brings us to the ghoulish delights of ye ol’ October… when weather gets a bit cooler, pumpkin spice lattes are flowing freely, and Halloween is just around the corner!

Our pals at Freeform are now celebrating the season with their spooktacular 31 Nights of Halloween programming event—and to kick things off, they just premiered a fantastical new music video choreographed by and starring Disney’s Fairy Tale Weddings hosts and So You Think You Can Dance alumni Stephen “tWitch” Boss and Allison Holker. Check out the spellbinding clip, above.

That song you hear? It’s “Hocus Pocus,” a new single from Rondo Stacks and IZK Jenkins that’s inspired by both the iconic movie (which, as D23 Members know, marks its 25th anniversary this year!) and that film’s memorable rendition of “I Put A Spell On You.” And speaking of those wacky Sanderson Sisters, stay tuned later this month when Freeform airs an all-new special—Hocus Pocus 25th Anniversary Halloween Bash—featuring appearances by stars Sarah Jessica Parker and Kathy Najimy, director Kenny Ortega, and more!

Lightspeed to Disneyland Paris for “Legends of the Force”

Our bons amis across the pond at Disneyland Paris have a very special event cooked up for the first few months of 2019—and if you’re a Star Wars fan (who isn’t?), you may wanna start saving those euros. Beginning early next year, “Legends of the Force – A Celebration of Star Wars” will feature an out-of-this-world show and visits from some of the saga’s most iconic characters.

Guests will be able to relive memorable Star Wars moments with the Star Wars: A Galaxy Far, Far Away show, which will light up the Production Courtyard at Disneyland Paris several times a day. Plus, keep your eyes peeled for appearances by Rey, Kylo Ren, Darth Maul, and—for the first time at Disneyland Paris—the fearsome bounty hunter Boba Fett.

Are you part of the Resistance? Or do you feel a kinship with the Dark Side? It’s no matter—you’ll still enjoy a dramatic First Order March led by Captain Phasma herself. And over at Walt Disney Studios park, you’ll have the chance to visit with lovable Chewbacca, as well as everyone’s favorite droid, R2-D2.

And guests can continue to cruise alien terrain on a Starspeeder 1000 at Star Tours: The Adventure Continues, or shift senses into high gear over at Star Wars Hyperspace Mountain. Enjoy “Legends of the Force,” you will, from January 12 through March 17.

Delectable New Food Options at Downtown Disney District

Foodies of the world (or at least those visiting Disneyland Resort soon), we have most excellent news: There are some new—and returning—delicious delights at Downtown Disney District.

But that’s not all: Every afternoon, beginning at 3 p.m., Downtown Disney District now welcomes a host of local food trucks; they’ll be visiting on a rotating basis this fall. Look for incredible eats from Brew Wings, Crepes Bonaparte, The Habit Burger Grill, and Mad Dumplings, just to name a few.

There’s more yum to come at Downtown Disney District—stay tuned for more info on the Salt & Straw scoop shop and the Ballast Point brewery as their opening dates draw near.

10 Totally Retro Pieces of Mickey Mouse Merchandise You Need to See

By Max Lark

The Walt Disney Archives’ specially curated Inside the Walt Disney Archives: From Mickey Mouse to Forever After exhibition gave thousands of D23 Expo Japan 2018 guests the rare opportunity to get an up-close look at archival treasures and artifacts from across Disney’s 95-year legacy. Featuring more than 770 pieces from the Archives collection, the exhibition also featured a sure-to-make-you smile showcase of dozens of charming artifacts “made for you and me” and everyone else who loves Mickey Mouse.

To help celebrate Mickey’s 90th, we wanted to share a delightful assortment of these Mickey Mouse treasures, which reminds us once again—as if we needed to be—just how beloved Mickey is, how much he seems to be a part of humanity’s collective DNA, and how much his visage can make seemingly ordinary products extraordinary.

Archives Director Becky Cline, who oversaw the creation of the exhibit, says, “Bringing this collection of rare Mickey artifacts to the Japanese people—who so love and admire Mickey Mouse and Disney—was so special. To see the faces of our guests as they enjoyed this showcase was an amazing experience. Mickey Mouse truly is our goodwill ambassador to the world.”

Inside the Walt Disney Archives: From Mickey Mouse to Forever After is currently touring Japan, with stops slated through the end of 2019.
