Inside the Magical Moments from Dancing with the Stars’ “Disney Night”

By Zach Johnson

Dancing with the Stars brought the magic of Disney to viewers’ homes all around the U.S. Monday. The ABC competition series’ annual “Disney Night” began with Mickey Mouse giving a warm welcome to Tyra Banks, the show’s new host and executive producer. Banks then entered the ballroom wearing a fabulous dress inspired by the ultimate fashionista, Minnie Mouse, as the Main Street Electrical Parade lit up the ballroom. “We all need a bit of magic in our lives,” Banks told viewers. “Since we can’t go to Disneyland, we are bringing some Disney magic to all of you with our princes, our princesses, our pirates, and more!”

First up were Skai Jackson and her partner, Alan Bersten, dancing the jive to Disney Legend Randy Newman’s “Almost There” from The Princess and the Frog. “I was really excited about dancing to The Princess and the Frog. It has always been one of my favorite Disney movies,” Jackson told D23 after earning a final score of 18/30. “Tiana is the only Black Disney Princess, so that’s really special, and no one has ever done the song on the show before.” The Disney Channel actress, best known for her role as Zuri Ross in Jessie and BUNK’D, added she’d been “really looking forward” to bringing everything full circle with the “Disney Night” episode. “I had a blast doing it. I hope I made my Disney family proud!”

Following Jackson and Bersten were Monica Aldama and partner Val Chmerkovskiy dancing the waltz to Disney Legends Howard Ashman and Alan Menken’s “Part of Your World” from The Little Mermaid. The duo earned their highest score this season, a 21/30, with judge Carrie Ann Inaba saying Aldama was like a “different person” and judge Bruno Tonioli commending the “confidence and connection” she’d displayed on the dance floor.

Next up were Justina Machado and partner Sasha Farber dancing the Charleston to “Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious” from Mary Poppins. “It’s great to do something that is so out of your comfort zone,” Machado told D23 after earning a 19/30. “And then to play a character that I would never see myself playing, that part was exciting.” Added Farber, “It was absolutely magical, from the outfits to the dance to the way Justina performed it.”

Hot on their heels was the self-anointed “Ultimate Disney Princess Dad” AJ McLean and his partner, Cheryl Burke, dancing the quickstep to “Prince Ali” from Aladdin. Before they received a final score of 21/30, new judge Derek Hough said, “AJ, I can always rely on you to put a smile on my face. You are always committed to every performance—so much fun!”

Anne Heche and partner Keo Motsepe were next, dancing the quickstep to Menken and David Zippel’s “Zero to Hero” from Hercules. “This dance was so much fun to do,” Motsepe told D23 after the show. “Everyone who’d seen it in rehearsal was like, ‘Wow!’” Although they are hoping to improve upon their score of 15/30 in next week’s episode, Motsepe said their chemistry is only getting stronger as the competition continues. “Anne and I are like two kids in Disneyland,” he said. “Just having a good time in our own world… but together!”

Following Heche and Motsepe were Jeannie Mai and partner Brandon Armstrong dancing the Viennese waltz to “Married Life” from Up. Dressed as Carl and Ellie and using balloons as props, they lifted their scores to a season high of 22/30 with one eight and two sevens. Mai was so surprised and thrilled by the judges’ reactions she actually ran off with their score cards. “I couldn’t believe it!” she later told D23. “I worked so hard this week for one seven; I just wanted a seven.” She also dedicated the performance to her rapper fiancé, Jeezy: “I told the producers, ‘I want Up! Brandon put together beautiful choreography.” Just as he did for “Disney Night,” Armstrong said his goal for the coming weeks is to choreograph numbers that elicit an emotional response from viewers. “I’m very much of the mindset that if you keep the inside of your little bubble clean, then the people looking in will always respect that, and it will always be going up and up—literally, going Up. Get it?”

Next, Nelly and partner Daniella Karagach danced the foxtrot to “It’s Alright” from the upcoming Disney and Pixar film Soul, opening in U.S. theaters November 20. The routine earned three sixes for a total of 18/30. “I thought it was more than alright; I thought it was great,” Hough said, praising Nelly’s “smooth” frame. Tonioli called it a “charming” number, telling Nelly, “You behaved like a real gentleman with your lady. So tender! So attentive!”

Following in their footsteps were Carole Baskin and partner Pasha Pashkov dancing the samba to Disney Legends Elton John and Tim Rice’s “Circle of Life” from The Lion King. “I love the movie. It’s such a wonderful message,” Baskin said of their pick. “One of the most beautiful things about the Disney films that feature animals is that they are living free.” Although Baskin and Pashkov earned the lowest score of the night, with a 12/30, it wasn’t all bad news. Said Inaba, “I really want to salute you for the love you put into that dance.”

Kaitlyn Bristowe and Artem Chigvintsev fared better after dancing the foxtrot to “How Far I’ll Go” from Moana. “I’ve seen Moana probably 50 times,” admitted Bristowe. “She comes from this island and that’s all she knows, but she wants to see what’s beyond the reef. And that’s like me coming out of my small town.” Their performance made waves with the judges, resulting in 23/30. Inaba called it “the best dance of the night,” Hough admired Bristowe’s “fluidity,” and Tonioli told her, “You really reminded me of the shape of water.”

After the commercial break, Vernon Davis and partner Peta Murgatroyd invited the at-home audience to “Be Our Guest” as they danced the quickstep to the Beauty and the Beast classic, earning a score of 22/30. After their performance, Murgatroyd admitted to D23, “I was not expecting that! I was hoping for sevens, and when the eight came up, I think I screamed really loudly. I have to watch that back to see if I made a fool of myself!” And although he had initially hoped to dress up as Beast, Davis happily lit up the dance floor as Lumière. “He’s awesome,” the NFL player told D23. “I was watching him last night before I went to bed, just trying to mimic him a little bit and loosen up.” Since the show started, Davis said his three kids have been getting a kick out of seeing him perform. “They love seeing me do something different. They’ve been watching me play football their entire lives—since they were born—so it’s nice to do something else and change it up,” Davis said. “They’re excited for me and they’re happy—and they like all the outfits I’m wearing.”

Next, Nev Schulman and partner Jenna Johnson danced the Argentine tango to “Angelica” from Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides. After earning a 24/30, the highest score of the season, Johnson told D23, “I don’t think Nev dropped character one time throughout two hours of filming!” According to Schulman, “I felt more comfortable as Captain Jack Sparrow. And not just the character, but the set and the music really put me in the zone to be smoldering, passionate, and sharp. But the outfit and the makeup helped a lot, for sure.” Going forward in the competition, Johnson said, “We have some momentum right now and we want to keep building on that. I don’t want to put too much pressure on ourselves. I want us to keep pushing, keep working hard, and keep putting our best foot forward every Monday. I’m very happy with where we’re at but I want to keep working really, really hard.”

Johnny Weir and partner Britt Stewart had big shoes to fill—and boy, did they! Their rumba routine, set to Disney Legend Christina Aguilera’s “Reflection (2020)” from Mulan, landed them at the top of the leaderboard, tying Schulman and Johnson’ score of 24/30. “Mulan is about the strength of family and sacrifice, and I definitely feel I wouldn’t be who I am without my family,” admitted Weir. “And it is an honor for me to represent them.” His performance with Stewart moved Inaba to tears; she told him, “I believe in you so much. Tonight, watching you dance like that felt so good, because I saw you make the transition from being an ice skater to being a ballroom Latin dancer… It was epic!” Hough called the number “beautiful” twice, while Tonioli praised Weir’s “exquisite” shapes and extensions.

Jesse Metcalfe and partner Sharna Burgess danced the jive to “King of New York” from Newsies next, earning a score of 20/30. “In rediscovering Newsies, I felt like ‘King of New York’ was the perfect song, and I loved what our wardrobe department did with the costumes,” Metcalfe told D23 after the show. “I just thought it was a really great opportunity for me to show a more fun side and maybe show some Broadway potential.” Burgess said she was “very proud” of Metcalfe’s continued improvements and can’t wait to get to work on next week’s cha cha. “It’s going to bring out a different kind of spice. We’re going to bring out that hip action,” Burgess said with a laugh. “If we keep working the way that we’re working, then we can keep climbing the leaderboard and impressing the judges.”

The final “Disney Night” dance saw Chrishell Stause and Gleb Savchenko performing the waltz to “A Dream Is a Wish Your Heart Makes” from Cinderella. “We all know Cinderella had a rough start, so I really relate to her in many ways,” said Stause. “I feel like this is the ultimate rags-to-riches story.” Their romantic waltz nearly ended with a kiss—until the clock struck midnight and the magic wore off. Before receiving a score of 22/30 (their highest yet!), Tonioli crowned Stause “the belle of the ball,” telling her, “You really look like the ultimate Disney princess. Gorgeous, gorgeous, gorgeous! I could feel the romance unfolding.” Likewise, Inaba told Stause and Savchenko, “You guys are like magic together!”

Of course, all good stories must come to an end. After finding themselves in the bottom two with Heche and Motsepe, Baskin and Pashkov became the second couple eliminated. Smiling, Baskin said, “My husband is going to be so happy I’m coming home!” Overall, as Inaba had said moments earlier, “Everyone did an amazing job for ‘Disney Night’ tonight.”

Dancing with the Stars airs Monday nights at 8|7c on ABC.

Lush, Vibrant Changes Coming Soon to Disney’s Polynesian Village Resort

Should you find yourself visiting Walt Disney World Resort about a year from now (sounds good to us!), you may notice some fantastic changes at a fan-favorite resort. Just this week, our friends over at Disney Parks Blog shared a look at how the arrival experience at the beloved Disney’s Polynesian Village Resort is being updated with an enhanced entryway—and it’s all set to debut just in time for the resort hotel’s 50th anniversary in Summer 2021.

The new porte cochère will showcase its iconic mid-20th century architecture; teams from Walt Disney Imagineering and Walt Disney World produced a design inspired by colors, patterns, and textures found throughout the resort. Additionally, along the Monorail station, bold new wooden screens will be covered with geometric patterns in bright, tropical colors that complete an exciting new composition to welcome guests upon arrival. The entryway’s open and airy design will feature dramatic lighting elements, including chandeliers—matching the existing grand chandelier in the resort lobby—inspired by glass floats, fishing nets and oversized bamboo elements. Look for enhancements to the gardens and fountains, as well. And that’s not all: All of the resort’s guest rooms are being beautifully redone, too!

Visiting sooner than next year? Never fear—while work is underway in the coming months, guests can still enjoy access to the Great Ceremonial House and its operating dining and retail outlets. Look for more tropically terrific info as it becomes available…

Magic of Disney’s Animal Kingdom Brings a Wildly Wonderful Inside Look at the Theme Park to Disney+

By Beth Deitchman

If you’ve visited Disney’s Animal Kingdom Theme Park and gazed in awe at the incredible array of animals who call the park’s savannas, forests, and tranquil pools home, you’ve only experienced part of the story. Beginning Friday, September 25, Disney+’s new docuseries Magic of Disney’s Animal Kingdom, produced by National Geographic and narrated by Josh Gad, presents the ultimate behind-the-scenes look at Disney’s Animal Kingdom Theme Park, Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge, and The Seas with Nemo and Friends at EPCOT. And whether you’ve ridden Kilimanjaro Safaris more times than you can count, or if Magic of Disney’s Animal Kingdom marks your first visit to this wondrous place, prepare to be amazed.

animal kingdom

Magic of Disney’s Animal Kingdom grew from “a desire to show the incredible relationships of trust between the animals and the people who take care of them, and how passionate we all are about saving these animals in the wild,” Dr. Mark Penning, vice president of Disney’s Animals, Science and Environment team, explains. That’s evident from animal manager Rachel Daneault’s unabashed joy watching western lowland gorilla Gino celebrate his 39th birthday with a storybook-worthy cake; and in the patience demonstrated by Dr. Dan Fredholm and Kenya the giraffe’s keepers as they wait for her to take the one step that will place her foot in exactly the right location needed for a hoof trim. The process usually requires sedation, and this new technique will be simpler and safer for the giraffes (and—bonus!—even comes with a snack).

animal kingdom

World-class storytelling is part of every Disney experience, but it’s the animals themselves who drive the story in Magic of Disney’s Animal Kingdom, Penning tells D23, just as they do throughout the parks. “We don’t want to stress animals about anything. We want to know that they’re relaxed and they’re doing what they would normally do every day,” he says, and those everyday activities come to life in surprising and compelling ways in the docuseries. To ensure that the cameras were never intrusive, the production sometimes looked to cranes to stay a comfortable distance from the animals, and they also used a little out-of-the-box ingenuity. “In some instances, [the camera] was an apparatus inside the animals’ space, but we did it in such a way that the animals found this was a play opportunity, or they were inquisitive,” Penning shares.

animal kingdom

And that’s the way the parks were designed: to provide an authentic experience that puts the animals first, but still delivers a memorable experience for guests. Joe Rohde, portfolio creative executive for Walt Disney Imagineering, emphasizes that the animals’ health, safety, and desires were the first things taken into consideration when the parks were designed. “The presence of animals defines the entirety of the experience of Animal Kingdom,” he says, noting that it informs the style of the buildings, the way the pavement is laid out, and more. “We must create a place where an animal feels at home. Then the next question we have to ask ourselves is, if all of that is true, what is the way in which we can interact with and see and experience this place that doesn’t interfere with that? And then the next thing is, how can we fold that into a story that brings greater understanding, greater emotional meaning, greater impact, than simply seeing the animal? That actually informs everything in the entire park, whether you ever see an animal or not—because ultimately, everything you experience leads to a moment where you encounter an animal.”

animal kingdom

Rohde sees Disney’s Animal Kingdom as “a place suffused with story, in which, when you finally see these animals, the moment is filled with additional meaning.” And in many ways, the Imagineers achieve the greatest level of success in the theme park with work that is relatively invisible—in stark contrast to the thrilling and innovative attractions that they also create. In Magic of Disney’s Animal Kingdom, Rohde points to moats that appear to be lovely watering holes for the animals of the savanna, but actually serve as natural barriers to ensure everyone stays within their respective habitats. Viewers of the docuseries will also watch Imagineers install a palm tree that looks as though a coconut could fall from it at any minute, but in reality, is an incredibly lifelike light designed to illuminate the elephants during the park’s evening safari.

“So much of what we do, not only ourselves but the entire [Animals, Science and Environment] group, is invisible,” Rohde says, and he’s eager for viewers to peek behind the curtain in the docuseries. “Animal Kingdom is a place where people have far greater enjoyment of what it is the more they know. So, by putting this out there where they can see it, where they can understand what goes into it, I believe they’re going to have a much richer experience of the whole place,” he shares.

animal kingdom

“There is so much more that happens behind the scenes than people realize. Our animals here thrive because we have an incredible team of professionals that take care of them,” Penning emphasizes, adding that the team members also share a passion for protecting animals and wildlife in general.

“I think that one of the most important things that I hope people take away from watching this show is the human-animal bond. I think anybody who has a beloved pet at home understands how strong that bond can be,” Fredholm says. “We love these animals and there is a real, palpable bond that I hope will come across when you watch the show.”

Zoological manager Rachel Daneault believes that Magic of Disney’s Animal Kingdom will also show how Disney is leading the way, both in terms of innovative veterinary care at the park, and through the Disney Conservation Fund, which has directed more than $100 million to programs around the world that are working to protect wildlife and wild places. “To be able to be part of that and support that is really important to me, because I’m working with these animals, but I am looking out for the greater good of all animals,” she says.

Penning will be happy if Magic of Disney’s Animal Kingdom sparks viewers to come to Florida and see the amazing level of care in person, but he also hopes the docuseries will encourage them to take action closer to home. He says, “If we can just inspire people to think about nature and to take care of the nature in their backyard, I will consider this a big success.”

EXCLUSIVE: Return to the World of Chip ’n’ Dale Rescue Rangers in an All-New Book

By the D23 Team

Fans of the Rescue Rangers, meet the Mouse Watch. Under the direction of mouse inventor/all-around genius Gadget Hackwrench, exceptional mice work together as a team to solve BIG problems using SMALL gadgets. Their mission: Save the world from an evil plot orchestrated by the Rogue Animal Thieves Society (R.A.T.S.). Want to know what happens next? Check out this exclusive excerpt from The Mouse Watch by J. J. Gilbert, which is available for pre-order now.

Don’t look down!

It wasn’t just the terrifying drop that bothered Bernie, it was also the fact that the plan she’d come up with to impress her idol, Gadget Hackwrench, wasn’t being recorded by someone she trusted to do it right.

She glanced at her young helper and rolled her eyes.

Being the youngest child in a poor family meant that Bernie knew how to make the most out of a little. The young mouse had been born very sick and although her health improved as she got older, she was still quite small for her age. It was a fact about herself that she hated, but  had also learned to live with. And her helper was only a little smaller than she was, even though he was much younger.

Bernie was twelve.

Paul “Poopie” Longtail was only two years old, and Bernie knew that the little tyke wasn’t supposed to be out at night with his babysitter having adventures. She watched as he tried  valiantly to hold up a human-size smartphone with his baby-mouse arms, but he was clearly losing the battle.

It was also way past his bedtime.

“Hold it still, Poopie!” shouted Bernie. “Just get this one shot!”

“I…  I’m twying,” stuttered Poopie. “Thith themes weally dangerouth Mith Bernadette. Maybe you thould get thome help!”

“No!” said Bernie. “I’ve got this. And please, Poopie, it’s Bernie, not Bernadette.”

“Thorry,” said the baby mouse.

Bernie’s long whiskers twitched in annoyance. She hated her full name. The only time she heard it was when her mother was upset and she was about to get in big trouble.

Her tail was stiff and stuck straight out like a knitting needle, the usual sign that she was angry and about to lose her temper. Most of the time, when this happened, her family ran for cover.

But she wasn’t angry.

She was scared.

The large paper clip she’d brought was attached to a fishing line that extended from the top of a rain gutter to a trash-can lid far below. She knew if she was going to try and get the attention of the most secret and elite mouse organization on the planet, she had to do something amazing… something that would set her apart from other recruits.

A warm wind ruffled her fur and rattled a set of wind chimes in the backyard below. Bernie breathed in the scent of dry earth and chaparral. It was a typical California night in September, but  for her this night needed to be anything but that. It needed to be special.

Bernie thought of everything she’d tried so far to get the Mouse Watch’s attention. She’d written letters. She’d created her own channel on MouseTube, the private, secure internet server created by, and for, mice. She’d posted several videos to the Underweb, a little known MouseTube channel that most fans believed the Mouse Watch organization secretly monitored. Bernie had tried doing crazy stunts, attempted to prove her intellect through solving puzzles, and had even resorted to begging in order for them to give her a chance.

So far, nothing had worked.

I’ve gotta make this one count, she thought.

She sighed, remembering all the bumps and bruises that she’d gotten along the way. Good thing “giving up” wasn’t in her nature or she would have quit a long time ago. Coming into the world both sickly and small hadn’t stopped  her.  Hadn’t she’d surprised everyone, including her parents, with her courageous spirit?

But why hasn’t it worked yet? Bernie  wondered. What’s it gonna take to get Gadget to notice me? She glanced down at the ground far below and suppressed a shudder. Would this finally be the thing that did it?

She thought of her older brother, Brody. He would have told her not to give up, and to never take no for an answer.

She missed him so much.

The wind picked up, slightly cooler now, cutting through the camo pants and black special ops sweater that Bernie always wore, a castoff from an old Commander Cody action doll. Her hair, dyed blue and worn high and stiff in the front, always looked windblown whether there was a breeze or not. It also added to her height, and the way she saw it, she could use any help she could get. Usually, the electric-blue color made her feel tough and daring. But the truth was, right now she didn’t feel that way.

Bernie shivered, not from the cold, but from her nerves.

Then, steeling herself, she took a deep breath, adjusted her grip on the paper clip, and called down,

“Are you recording?”

“Yesth!” Poopie lisped. “Ith been on for three minutes! Hurry, Misth Bernie! My armth hurt!”

It was time.

Bernie tried to calm her racing heart. Then, while forcing herself not to think about how crazy she was being, she launched herself forward from the dizzying height and shouted,

“FOR THE WATCH!”

The speed was faster than anything she’d ever imagined. Every muscle in her arms ached as she held on for dear life. The wind howled in her ears and her whiskers were plastered to both sides of her cheeks as she rocketed toward the trash can below.

As she sped down the line, wobbling back and forth, she could see Poopie growing closer, the little tyke struggling to keep the phone from falling over as he recorded the stunt.

The glow of the screen came close.

For a nanosecond, she caught a glimpse of her own terrified but triumphant expression reflected back to her.

Then the fear faded away.

She was right on track.

Her plan was going to work!

All she had left to do was extend her feet and execute a perfect tumble, landing like an Olympic gymnast right in front of the smartphone.

But as it turned out, that idea was much harder than it looked.

Later, when she recalled her inglorious landing, she remembered hearing two voices screaming in perfect pitch. Some part of her brain was amazed that she, a tweenaged mouse, could make a screech that was as high-pitched as a toddler’s.

She remembered a terrifying moment of slipping, sliding, banging, and shouting. Then, the world spun as she and Poopie went flying off the trash can into a thorny rosebush. Miraculously, Poopie landed in the middle of a big rose, and the petals cushioned his fall.

Bernie wasn’t so lucky.

Before everything went black, Bernie remembered hearing her leg crack when she hit the ground and feeling the agonizing pain that shot all the way up her back.

And when she woke up in the hospital, she found that her leg wasn’t the only thing that had cracked. Her parent’s smartphone, a rare, lucky find that they’d scrounged from inside an electronic recycling bin, had shattered on the sidewalk. The phone was the most expensive thing that her family possessed. It served as their wide-screen TV and internet connection to the larger world. It was also the only way Bernie could upload videos so that the Mouse Watch might find out that she existed.

Losing that phone effectively removed her very best (and most dangerous) attempt at impressing her hero, Gadget Hackwrench.

The Mouse Watch would never see the video.

And the hurt Bernie felt at that realization made her broken bone and her bruises pale in comparison.

Meet the Characters of Secret Society of Second-Born Royals

By Zach Johnson

Before it premieres this Friday, you’re royally invited to meet the characters in Secret Society of Second-Born Royals, an original movie streaming exclusively on Disney+! They may not be future monarchs, but these characters are no spare heirs. In fact, they’re each born with super-human abilities that can help them protect their respective kingdoms. If they can harness their powers and learn to work together, it might be their crowning glory.

secret society of second-born royals

Sam (Peyton Elizabeth Lee)

This rebellious teenager is second in line to the throne of the kingdom of Illyria. Rather than attend royal events, she’d rather rock out on her guitar. “Sam has always felt like she’s not only second-born but also second-best—like she never lives up to everyone’s expectations,” says Lee. “There is a ton of pressure on teenagers to fit a certain mold or to be successful in a certain way, and in addition to all those normal teenage pressures, Sam also has the pressure of an entire country watching her and looking to her to set the right example. And so, she sort of buckles under all that pressure. It’s not until she becomes a member of the Secret Society of Second-Born Royals that she really finds her group of people, finds her place, and figures out how she can use this title that she’s been given for good.” Sam has been gifted with heightened senses, meaning she can feel, hear, and see things more sharply than the average person. “I think she’s a super relatable character,” says Lee. “Even though she is a superhero and a princess, the themes of the film and the life lessons Sam experiences are very universal, no matter who you are or how old you are.”

Tuma (Niles Fitch)

Tuma is a charmer with the ability to influence people’s actions. When his training begins, Fitch says, “Tuma needs to learn how to work with the team and how to use his power for good, because it’s such a powerful power to be able to control what people do.” Tuma’s gift reminds Fitch of what Uncle Ben told Spider-Man: “With great power comes great responsibility.” Throughout the movie, Tuma must work to “understand his power and who he is,” he adds. “He has to get comfortable and allow other people to take the lead. That’s something I feel like we all have to learn, and that’s exactly what you see Tuma deal with.”

secret society of second-born royals

January (Isabella Blake Thomas)

With the ability to absorb other people’s powers, bubbly and outgoing January can do pretty much anything she wants. “Exploring her powers was really interesting, because it follows her thinking that she doesn’t know where she fits,” says Thomas. “She wants to fit in, but she just doesn’t really know where she does.” Ultimately, “Having that power gave her the ability to overcome something and figure out who she wants to be and who she is.”

secret society of second-born royals

Roxana (Olivia Deeble)

A social media influencer with 108 million followers, Roxana has no filter. “She’s very full of herself,” admits Deeble. But once she begins her training with the secret society, she says, “She goes on a discovery of self-love. It’s not just outward; it has to be inward.” Ironically, Roxana can turn invisible, which Deeble finds hilarious, “since she always loves to be seen.”

secret society of second-born royals

Matteo (Faly Rakotohavana)

The strong and silent type, Matteo tends to fade into the background—initially, at least. “He is super shy and very awkward. He wants to fit in but he has trouble doing so, because he’s scared of what other people may think of him,” says Rakotohavana. “His whole arc throughout the film is gaining a sense of confidence and learning to control his powers.” According to Rakotohavana, “His power is really funny, because it’s literally a reflection of Matteo himself. He can control insects, which might not seem very useful. Like, ‘Ew, bugs! Ew, Matteo!’ But he learns that just like his insects, he plays an important role in his team.”

secret society of second-born royals

James (Skylar Astin)

James, a professor and mentor to the new class of second-born royals, has a boyfriend named Henry, an iguana named Jeff, and a severe gluten allergy—but that’s just scratching the surface. “He can multiply,” says Astin. “He can clone himself and clean a room really fast or he can be a better teacher who gets their ear a little bit easier—and it also comes in handy when fighting crime.” As his character mentors the five students, Astin adds, “Disney fans are going to go on a wild, fun ride. This movie really emphasizes the importance of teamwork and inclusivity and coming together from different parts of the world against a common enemy. I think that is very palpable right now. That is a timeless, valuable lesson.”

Meet the rest of the characters—including Sam’s best friend, Mike (Noah Lomax); her sister, Eleanor (Ashley Liao); her mom, Queen Catherine (Elodie Yung); and her foe, Inmate 34 (Greg Bryk)—when Secret Society of Second-Born Royals debuts on Disney+!
