Q&A: Inside the Magical World of The Art of Encanto

By the D23 Team

The Academy Award-winning movie Encanto has captured our hearts with its emotional story and catchy music—and, of course, its gorgeous visual design! If you’ve been enchanted by the film’s look, you need to check out The Art of Encanto, a stunning book featuring never-before-seen production art, character designs, storyboards, and colorscripts. This oversized volume celebrates the art of this stunning animated movie, alongside exclusive interviews with the filmmakers and behind-the-scenes details into the creative development process. We sat down with the book’s author to give you an inside look at how this gorgeous book came to life.

D23: The Official Disney Fan Club: Your team took a research trip to Colombia to help develop the project. How important are these trips to realize the film we see in theaters?
Juan Pablo Reyes Lancaster Jones (JPRLJ): On every Walt Disney Animation Studios project, the research process for the directors and visual artists is crucial. For Encanto, the visit to Colombia was especially important due to the specific influences of the culture seen in the film.  There are some things that can’t be gathered from books or the internet, like the warmth of the people, the natural majesty of the different environments, or the huge diversity that exists from town to town. However, the trip is only the tip of the iceberg, and much more research went into Encanto—they talked to architects, anthropologist, biologists, and other experts who went on to form our Colombian Cultural Trust—many of whom are quoted in the book! This work was so meaningful and can be seen in the book through various designs, including those inspired by mochila from the Wayuu and the sombrero vueltiao from the Zenú Indigenous Community.

D23: What about Colombia did you find most inspiring?
JPRLJ: How different people and places are from region to region. Colombia is far from being just one thing, and that was very exciting for the filmmakers  to explore. The biodiversity of plants and animals was also exciting, because there are so many species that we have never seen in animation before. The musical variety and instruments that exist in the country were also very exciting, and Lin-Manuel Miranda was deeply inspired by the sounds [the team] experienced in the trip.

D23: Mirabel is the first Latina lead character in a Disney Animation film. What other ways did your team strive to distinguish her from previous heroines?
JPRLJ: She is also the first one to wear glasses! Her costume design, done by costume design lead Neysa Bové, is also very unique and specific. It’s a blouse and skirt instead of a dress. (You can see a detailed design of all the iconography on her skirt in the book.) Her personality is also very specific, and art director, characters Bill Schwab and his team did an amazing job at finding very distinct features that felt true to the region—which you can clearly see in the many versions of Mirabel shown in her chapter. Animators also did a great job at finding that beautiful soul.

D23: The artwork and color keys in The Art of Encanto have deep, rich purples, blues, and other jewel tones. How do these colors influence the feeling and emotion of the film?
JPRLJ: The directors, production designer Ian Gooding and associate production designer Lorelay Bové wanted the film to be colorful, to carry the magical realism spirit that inspired it. The color choices were extremely thoughtful. One of my favorite parts of the book is the image that shows how they decided to distinguish the different members of the family through color choices.

D23: Casa Madrigal is not only a setting, but a character in the film. How did you inject personality into the architecture?
JPRLJ: They knew that the house would be alive from early on, and the challenge was how to execute it. Both the visual development and story departments did a lot of work to find different reasons and ways in which this could happen. Many of those explorations are in the book, even the ones that didn’t make it into the movie.

D23: What is your favorite part of the house?
JPRLJ: I grew up going to an old family hacienda, so I have a soft spot for stunning courtyards that you can find throughout Latin America. The art environments department, led by art directors, environments Camille André and Mehrdad Isvandi, nailed that and every single magical room. There are some stunning courtyard paintings in the book, and we even show a closeup on the tile work Lorelay Bové did!

D23: When you were designing the Madrigal family, how did you approach bringing their gifts into their designs? Was that process different for Mirabel?
JPRLJ: It all started with their personalities and family roles, and that dictated their gifts and design. The book has a section of some early boards the story team did to explore different powers and how they could be realized. You can also see how costume choices and symbology visually support their powers in subtle but meaningful ways. The contrast with Mirabel is that everything around her—elements in her room and costume—feel handmade by her, a way to express herself as a young woman trying to find who she is.

D23: Is there anything in this book that we haven’t seen before?
JPRLJ: There are tons of designs of elements that didn’t make it into the film—like the interior of Luisa’s room, family members that aren’t in the film, a different love interest for Isabela, and the list goes on! There are even alternative versions of the story represented by images created by director Byron Howard. I’m also excited to include in this book a section that shows you the evolution of Mirabel from initial design to final render, allowing us to show the artistry of many other departments.

D23: Why was working on Encanto and writing this book meaningful to you?
JPRLJ: As a Latin American little boy growing up with love towards the Disney heroines, I was beyond excited to have the opportunity to work on a film about our first Latina heroine. I also love art—I have a background in art publishing—so being able to celebrate the talented Disney Animation artists who worked on this film is a huge honor and responsibility I didn’t take lightly. I hope you enjoy the book; hours of the artists’ work went into creating every image you see in it, so to me it’s such a treasure.

Dancing with the Stars Moving to Disney+ This Fall

By Zach Johnson

Things are shaking up on the dance floor! After an impressive 30 seasons on ABC, Dancing with the Stars is moving to a new home on Disney+. The hit series received a two-season pickup and will premiere exclusively in the U.S. and Canada this fall, making Dancing with the Stars the first live series to debut on the streaming service.

Dancing with the Stars has entertained fans for 16 years on ABC, and we are excited to bring this beloved show exclusively to Disney+ as the platform’s first-ever live series,” said Kareem Daniel, chairman, Disney Media and Entertainment Distribution. “The show’s broad appeal, as well as the overwhelming popularity of its Disney-themed competition nights, make Disney+ the perfect home for Dancing with the Stars while continuing to expand our demographic reach.”

Dancing with the Stars has been a beloved staple on ABC for 30 seasons and brought so much joy to millions of viewers,” said Dana Walden, Chairman of Entertainment, Walt Disney Television. “As we’re significantly expanding our unscripted slate at ABC, this is a great opportunity to introduce this show to a whole new generation of fans on Disney+. We’re so grateful to our incredible partners at BBC Studios and look forward to continuing our relationship with them on this spectacular series, which will continue to be overseen by Rob Mills and the talented Walt Disney Television Alternative team.”

“The fact that our iconic global format Dancing with the Stars will now set the record as the first live series on Disney+ represents a major growth opportunity and a bold next step forward in the evolution of the franchise,” said Valerie Bruce, General Manager, BBC Studios, Los Angeles Productions. “This unprecedented move, combined with our two-season pickup, is a testament to the proven power of Dancing with the Stars and a resounding vote of confidence from our great, supportive partners at Disney, showing how much they value and believe in the brand.”

Produced in front of a live audience by BBC Studios’ Los Angeles production arm, Dancing with the Stars pairs celebrities with trained ballroom dancers to compete in themed choreographed dance routines. The series premiered on ABC in 2005 and has grown into an international phenomena and source of constant watercooler conversation. Last fall, it ranked among the Top 5 unscripted series with Adults 18-49.

5 Fantastic Things to Watch This Weekend Presented by StateFarm®

By Andie Hagemann

Yes, it’s true: There’s plenty of exciting content coming to your TV and assorted streaming devices this weekend! Kick things off with a new episode of Amphibia airing on Saturday, featuring special guest star Disney Legend Whoopi Goldberg; later that same day, watch Holes and uncover the mysterious origins behind Camp Green Lake. That evening, experience the thrilling action of X-Men: Dark Phoenix. On Sunday, celebrate the anniversaries of two music-filled films—Newsies and Hannah Montana: The Movie; they’re sure to have you singing and dancing all day.

Amphibia—Saturday, April 9, at 9:30 a.m. ET, on Disney Channel
In the new episode’s first story, Anne (voiced by Brenda Song) and the crew meet with Mother Olm (voiced by Disney Legend Whoopi Goldberg) to discuss ancient prophecies. The second story follows Grime (voiced by Troy Baker) as he begrudgingly appoints an apprentice out of necessity.

Holes—Saturday, April 9, at 12:50 p.m. ET, on Freeform
Shia LeBeouf (left) stars as Stanley Yelnats, an unlucky teenager sent to a juvenile correctional bootcamp after he is wrongfully convicted of stealing a pair of sneakers donated to the charity by a famous baseball player. In lieu of jail time, Stanley chooses to attend Camp Green Lake—and he quickly discovers the camp is neither green nor near a lake. Each day, he and his fellow campers are forced, for mysterious reasons, to dig holes in the camp’s barren wasteland. They soon discover the camp’s origins… and a few coincidental connections. Jon Voight, Sigourney Weaver, and Patricia Arquette also star in the film based on the hit novel of the same name.

X-Men: Dark Phoenix—Saturday, April 9, at 8:30 p.m. ET, on Freeform
During a rescue mission in space, Jean Gray (Sophie Turner, above) is hit by a mysterious force that makes her psychic powers even more potent. But when those amplified powers are difficult to control, the X-Men team up to save her from herself—as well as keep an alien race who want to take advantage of Jean’s formidable abilities at bay.

Newsies—Sunday, April 10, on Disney+
On Sunday, prepare to “Seize the Day” in honor of this beloved musical’s 30th anniversary! The fan-favorite film, loosely based on the Newsboys Strike of 1899, follows homeless New York City newsboy Jack “Cowboy” Kelly (Christian Bale, center) and his fellow newsies as they try to survive in the big city. When Joseph Pulitzer (Robert Duvall) makes it near impossible to sell a “pape” by raising prices, the boys go on strike. Bill Pullman costars as Bryan Denton, a journalist sympathetic to the newsboys’ plight. Directed by Disney Legend Kenny Ortega, the film boasts memorable musical numbers written by Jack Feldman and Disney Legend Alan Menken.

Hannah Montana: The Movie—Sunday, April 10, on Disney+
Break out the sequins and cowboy boots and get ready to experience the “Best of Both Worlds”—it’s time to celebrate the 13th anniversary of Hannah Montana’s big-screen debut. In the feature film, Miley Stewart (Miley Cyrus, right) is struggling to balance family, friends, and schoolwork as well as her double life as pop star Hannah Montana. Miley’s dad (Billy Ray Cyrus, left) brings her back to her roots with a trip to her hometown of Crowley Corners, Tennessee, for a break from the spotlight—which ultimately leads her to embark on a tuneful journey of self-exploration.

Celebrate Tokyo Disney Resort’s Toy Story Hotel Opening with an Exclusive Q&A

By Courtney Potter

Ready to become an “honorary toy”? Guests now have that chance with this week’s opening of the brand-new Toy Story Hotel at Tokyo Disney Resort! Inspired by Disney and Pixar’s beloved Toy Story franchise, the hotel immerses visitors in a world filled with the wonder of childhood dreams, imagination, and play.

From the moment they arrive, guests will feel like they’ve been shrunk to the size of a toy. Outside the hotel, they’ll find amazing, oversized action figures (each around 13 feet tall!) of their favorite Toy Story pals. For example, Buzz Lightyear and Jessie can be seen in Slinky Dog Park in front of the entrance, while Woody and Bo Peep can be found in Toy Friends Square, a private courtyard off the lobby—itself a colorful, toy-filled space with a jigsaw puzzle-inspired floor and a ceiling designed to look like a Bo Peep board game. Guest rooms are themed after Andy’s bedroom from the first Toy Story film, featuring his iconic blue-sky-and-puffy-white-cloud wallpaper, along with Woody’s Roundup-inspired headboards and even an oversized Mickey Mouse wristwatch hanging on one of the walls—among lots of other cool toy-like fixtures and furnishings. Hungry visitors can enjoy food and beverage at Lotso Garden Café, inspired by the pink teddy bear from Toy Story 3, while those looking for souvenirs and other sundries can shop ’til they drop at both Gift Planet (featuring Tokyo Disney Resort merchandise and items exclusive to the hotel) and Shop Together.

Toy Story Hotel is the fifth hotel overall, and the first “moderate-type” Disney hotel at Tokyo Disney Resort. With 595 rooms, its facilities and services are designed to bring guests an incredibly fun new option between the resort’s existing deluxe- and value-type Disney hotels. Recently, D23 spoke with Walt Disney Imagineering’s Bhavna Mistry (Portfolio Creative Executive) and Anne Miller (Principal Interior Designer), as well as Pixar Animation Studios’ Krista Sheffler (Production Manager, Disney Theme Parks), to find out some fun facts about the hotel and their experiences helping create it…

D23: What was the collaboration between Imagineering and Pixar like on this project?
Anne Miller (AM): I was going back through some notes, and our work together goes back to 2018. Pixar were great partners; they’ve been extremely helpful. Plus, when we worked with outside vendors, it got them really excited to talk with Pixar and hear their background on the characters and everything.
Krista Sheffler (KS): The creation of the Toy Story Hotel has been an amazing international effort among Pixar, Walt Disney Imagineering in Glendale, Walt Disney Imagineering Shanghai, and the Walt Disney Imagineering team in Tokyo. Due to COVID restrictions, all of our sculpt, paint, and construction reviews have been video remote meetings—but everyone’s commitment to faithfully bringing our super-sized toys to life has made this collaboration incredibly successful.

D23: What has excited or surprised you about the creation process as it’s gone along?
Bhavna Mistry (BM): We actually love the building itself. It’s a “moderate-type” hotel, and we were basically going to use a structural panel system that people might think are just cast concrete panels. But we ended up creating something really fun out of it, because they look like building blocks—they pop in and out a bit, and they create the scene of a city, on the front and on the inside. It’s as if Andy was putting this hotel together—parts of it he got through building blocks, and but he didn’t have enough blocks for other parts of it, so he took a cardboard box and drew clouds. It’s made to look like how a child would build a building with whatever toys they had.
AM: Once the design team determined that the building should look like it’s built out of actual toys, everything became clear. The toy scale gives the perception that everything is supposed to be there.
KS: Wood blocks, Tinkertoys, dominoes, books, cardboard boxes, stickers, popsicle sticks, and more are our construction pieces. Everything is a toy! And it’s exciting to have so many of our toy friends there: Jessie, Buzz Lightyear, Woody, Wheezy, Bo Peep and her sheep. And with all these wonderful character figures, there is a feeling of fun and friendship throughout the hotel which I think guests are going to really enjoy.

D23: What’s your favorite part of the hotel, personally?
BM: Sometimes, something happens in the constructing of a building that you wish didn’t happen—an architectural issue or a structural issue. One day, this giant soffit [a horizontal architectural feature designed to cover the underside of a roof overhang] shows up… We had expected that to be all clear glass and not this huge soffit. But it shows up, and we thought, “Well, what if we just had race cars zooming across it?” It ended up being probably one of my favorite things. We took something that was an architectural challenge and turned it into a very unique feature.
AM: One of my favorite elements is the corridors. As soon as the guest gets off the elevator, they’re either on the Buzz side or the Woody side—but when they get into the corridor, there are all these character footprints that lead you to your room. It’s super cute to see Rex’s footprints. Woody has a boot footprint. There’s Buzz’s footprint. You see the whole long shot of the corridor and it looks like the characters were running in and out of the rooms. It’s really cute.
KS: My favorite character is Bo Peep, and I cannot wait to see her in person. She is over 13 feet tall! This is the first time we’ve done a large-scale figure of Bo Peep in her Toy Story 4 look in any of the parks. The craftsmanship that was put into all of her delicate lace details is just amazing.

D23: What do you hope guests take away from a stay at Toy Story Hotel?
AM: This will be an immersive hotel experience bringing our guests into the toy world and we are so excited for them to become honorary toys in Tokyo.
KS: We’ve done that in the different Toy Story Lands throughout the Disney Parks, but this is the first time we’ve brought that idea to a hotel. We really had to think about how guests will use the spaces in a much more close-up and intimate way. You can walk right up to all of the toys. These films are very special because adults who grew up with them now have children who also love the films; it’s spanned the ages. So, the hotel is going to be a wonderful spot for Toy Story fans of all ages to stay together. And it’s a picture-taking heaven!

PROLOGUE

This is a story about two gods and a girl.

It takes place a very long time ago, when Scotland was only beginning to be called Scotland, at a castle called DunBroch.

The first god, the Cailleach, was very old. In fact, one of her other names was the Old Woman of Scotland, although most humans never saw her in that form. Instead, those with the Sight merely felt her invisible presence in a wild storm or a rushing waterfall or even in the melted snow that pools in fresh-plowed spring fields. The Cailleach was a goddess of creation. She made trees bud. Grass thicken. Calves grow inside cows. Fruit ripen on the vine. Her work was the ancient business of making and renewing.

Oh, she was a wily old woman.

She was a rule-bending, shape-shifting, trick-playing, truth-splitting old crone, and she’d do whatever she could to get her way.

The second god, Feradach, was very young. It wasn’t that he hadn’t been around as long as the Cailleach, because he had, in his own way. But unlike the Cailleach, who had the same physical form every time she became visible, Feradach appeared as something different to every person who saw him. It meant he was always learning himself new, over and over and over, a kind of eternal youth.

Feradach was a god of ruin. His work was the ancient business of destruction. Under his attention, fires seared landscapes, plagues harrowed communities, and floods erased civilizations.

Feradach destroyed the obsolete; the Cailleach prompted renewal.

Together, they kept the balance.

Unfortunately, they didn’t always agree on what the balance required. Or rather, the Cailleach didn’t always agree. Young Feradach was unflinchingly fair, because it’s easier to have unclouded justice before experience complicates things. The Cailleach, on the other hand, was old enough to have preferences. Biases. Favorites. This meant that sometimes, even when ruin was perfectly merited, she wanted her side to win instead.

And that was usually when she cheated. She’d been playing tricks on Feradach for ages.

Some years she managed to save a warrior or a family or even an entire village from him. Some years, she lost them all. Some years, when the tricks didn’t work, she used a miracle, although she didn’t get many of those to spend. The Cailleach was old, but wherever the miracles came from was even older, from a deep part of Scotland that has always favored healing and creation. Miracle years were rare ones.

This story takes place in a miracle year.

On the day it begins, DunBroch looked particularly splendid on its perch above the glittering loch. In that sharp winter weather, everything that wasn’t green and red was black and white. Black water, white-heaped shore. Black road to the castle, white-shouldered bracken on either side. Black walls, white-capped battlements. A powdered sugar layer of snow rendered all the courtyard’s divots smooth as an iced bun. Red berries popped brightly in the holly and bay leaf boughs hung over every threshold. Old green banners flapped elegantly from the tall towers.

DunBroch was getting ready for a Christmas wedding. Yes, they had Christmas back then, and weddings, too, although neither looked exactly as they do now. The part of weddings we spend a lot of time on these days—the bride and the groom, the picking of flowers and matching of dresses, showers and stag parties, flower girls and ring boys, the kiss, the kiss—that was the least involved part back then. A DunBroch wedding ceremony was just a couple quickly exchanging a ring or a brooch in front of a cleric, then getting on with it all. No kiss. No romance. Just a perfunctory transaction. But the celebration that came after—now that was really something. It could go on for days. Pantomime plays, courtly dancing, feats of strength, silly games, and, of course, the food. The food, oh, the food! To modern eyes, it would have looked much more like a festival than a wedding.

Now, a DunBroch Christmas was more like its modern-day cousin. The Christmas turkey was more likely to be a boar or a swan, and the board games played before the fire were ones that have long since gone extinct, but the seasonal trimmings were the same. Holly wreaths and ivy boughs, mischievous mistletoe and merry carols, twelve short winter days of gifts, twelve long winter nights of treats and spiced wine. It was a natural companion to the revelry of wedding feasting.

The Christmas wedding was Leezie’s. Foolish, lovable young Leezie, who had been a member of the DunBroch household staff so long that she was like family. She loved ritual and religion. The Christians, the druids, the Jews, the witches, the Cistercians, the Lads of Cernunnos, the Ladies of the Morrigan, the Tironensians, the Cluniacs, she had tried them all. Recently, she’d dedicated herself to Minerva, the Roman goddess of wisdom and crafts, and spent weeks weaving and writing songs about owls. It was a trying time. Luckily she’d moved on to astrology and then, on to getting married. Leezie had always wanted a Christmas wedding—a perfect combination of ritual and religion—and now she’d finally found a man to star in it with her. The others at DunBroch called him the Cabbage.

Cabbage is not exciting, but it is nutritious. He would do.

Leezie is not the girl this story is about, however. It is about another DunBroch girl.

Now, there are three DunBrochs: the castle DunBroch, gazing watchfully over the wooded hillsides. The kingdom DunBroch, with its lochs and burns, its lowland fields and highland shielings, its coven of white-haired mountains and sliver of black-tongued sea. And the Clan DunBroch: King Fergus, Queen Elinor, Princess Merida, and three triplet princes, Hubert, Harris, and Hamish.

This story belongs to the Princess Merida.

Merida was less like the mannered royal you’re imagining and more like a struck match, although matches did not yet exist. Red hair, keen eyes, quick brain, built to start fires but not to put them out. She was an absolute wizard with a bow and arrow. For over a decade, before the wee devil triplet princes arrived, she’d been the only child, and where other children might have had friends, Merida had her bow. She practiced her archery breathlessly, automatically, in every moment her mother hadn’t scheduled her for lessons in embroidery, music, and reading. There was a stillness to archery she couldn’t get anywhere else. Whenever she had a problem she couldn’t solve, she went out to practice. Whenever she had a feeling she didn’t understand, she went out to practice. Hour upon hour, she collected calluses on fingertips and bruises on forearms. At night, when she dreamt, she still sighted between trees and adjusted for strong highland winds.

In the months before the wedding, Merida took her bow and traveled the kingdom. In spring she’d gone with the villagers and their herds up to the temporary bothies in the shielings. In late summer she went down to Morventon to study letters and geography with the nuns. By fall, she was traveling with a handful of her father’s old confidants who had vowed to map the varied terrain of DunBroch.

In winter, she returned for Leezie’s wedding. She hung up her bow. How safe and unchanged she found DunBroch after her months of wandering.

She didn’t know that Feradach—and disaster—was approaching.

But the Cailleach knew. That wily old goddess.

She also knew that DunBroch had earned Feradach’s ruin. But the Cailleach was old, and she was biased, and she had a stake in the Clan DunBroch.

So she cheated.

This is that story.

Walt Disney World Earmarks 80 Acres for New Affordable Housing Development

By Zach Johnson

The Walt Disney Company is always looking for innovative ways to strengthen its communities—and Walt Disney World Resort just announced it has earmarked nearly 80 acres of land to bring a new affordable housing development to life in southwest Orange County, Florida. This initiative has been in the works for a while and builds on Disney’s legacy of bringing positive, lasting change to the communities it calls home, making a critical difference locally to address one of the nation’s greatest challenges.

“We are invested in working together with our community to solve complex issues,” said Jeff Vahle, president of Walt Disney World Resort. “The lack of affordable housing is affecting many people across our country, including right here in Central Florida. With this initiative, we’re lending a hand to make a real and meaningful impact in our community by tapping into the best of our company’s strengths. This is the right opportunity and the right time to take action.”

This new affordable housing development, which is in the early planning stages and subject to appropriate approvals, is expected to include more than 1,300 units. It will be constructed by a third-party affordable housing developer on Disney’s land near its Central Florida theme parks. The development will offer residents a variety of home choices that are affordable and attainable, located in close proximity to schools and the new and expanding Flamingo Crossings Town Center retail and dining complex. Not only that, but it will offer a variety of amenities to help foster a strong community.

Known for building industry-leading theme parks and resort hotels around the world, Disney will work with the developer to bring that same level of innovation, expertise, and attention to detail to this initiative. The upcoming development will be available for qualifying applicants from the general public, which includes Disney cast members.

More details will be released at a later dates as Disney continues due diligence work with a prominent affordable housing developer. Disney’s initiative will play an important role as leaders in the community, including Orange County Mayor Jerry L. Demings, continue to prioritize finding lasting solutions to affordable housing in the area. For more information on Disney’s community initiatives in the area, click here.
