Conversations with Disney Character Voices Panel Awes Fans

The voices behind some beloved Disney characters, including Mickey Mouse, Goofy, Ariel, and Tiana, dazzled fans in attendance for the “Conversations with Disney Character Voices” panel to close out D23 Expo.

Rick Dempsey, Disney’s senior vice president of character voices, emceed the festivities, which featured talk backs with iconic actors, an automated dialogue replacement (ADR) session with the stars of Aladdin, and a live performance by Donny Osmond!

Those participating included Jim Cummings (voice of Winnie the Pooh, Tigger, Ray, Pete, Darkwing Duck), Disney Legend Bill Farmer (voice of Goofy), Disney Legend Tony Anselmo (voice of Donald Duck), Bret Iwan (voice of Mickey Mouse), Kaitlyn Robrock (voice of Minnie Mouse), Jodi Benson (voice of Ariel), Susan Egan (voice of Megara), Disney Legend Anika Noni Rose (voice of Tiana), Disney Legend Linda Larkin (voice of Jasmine), and Scott Weinger (voice of Aladdin).

Farmer, who has been voicing Goofy for more than 35 years, shared that it’s heartwarming to hear from fans how much his work means to them. “People always come up and say, ‘I couldn’t talk to my dad, and [Goofy Movie] became our movie, and we became closer because of it,’” Farmer said. “We’re just in a little booth with a microphone; you don’t know how it affects the people out there, but with an event like this, we get to hear how it affects you.”

Dempsey later asked Rose if she shares any similarities with Tiana, a role that required the actress to embody extreme determination to land the gig. “I think we’re both big dreamers and from small spaces but found ways to inhabit the dreams that we had in our spirit,” Rose said. “I was really grateful to be able to bring that to heart and show young girls and boys who need to remember that dreams are still active even when you’re a grownup.”

Closing out the panel, Donny Osmond surprised fans with a spectacular performance of “I’ll Make a Man Out of You” from Mulan, which brought the crowd to their feet with a standing ovation.

Dancing with the Stars 31st Season Celebration Waltzes onto the Backlot Stage

“This is Dancing with the Stars!” To commemorate the incredible 31st Season of the fan-favorite series—and its big move to Disney+—judges and executive producers from the show took to the Backlot Stage to reveal some exciting news about the upcoming season.

Judges Carrie Ann Inaba, Bruno Tonioli, and Derek Hough were joined by executive producer Conrad Green and co-executive producer Deena Katz for a rollicking panel moderated by DWTS professional Jenna Johnson Chmerkovskiy—who unfortunately can’t compete this season due to impending parenthood—alongside husband (and fellow DWTSprofessional) Val Chmerkovskiy.

Green, who began with the series when it first debuted on ABC, is back as executive producer and show runner—and is especially excited to be around for the show’s big move to Disney+. “Coming back feels like coming home,” he told the audience. “Bringing a live show to Disney+, and bringing it to an audience that’s gonna be so receptive to what we are doing—trying to make it bigger, and we’ve got some really exciting plans for the season; just the combination of all that, seeing so many familiar faces and so many new faces and being able to bring a really aspirational, positive show to Disney+ is super exciting for us.” Dancing with the Stars is the first live series to debut on the streaming service!

During the panel, they shared that the beloved Disney Night will expand this season to Disney+ Night and feature content from the streamer’s marquee brands. Not only that, but voting will be live across the country in all time zones—as well as in Canada!

When asked why he thinks the show is so successful, Hough recalled a story about working with Season 18 contestant Amy Purdy, who lost her legs at age 19. “This is one of my favorite moments of all time—more than winning,” he admitted. “I’m sitting down [in the rehearsal room] and she starts crying. And I thought, ‘Oh my gosh, I’m being too hard on her; what’s going on? I’m so sorry!’ And she goes, ‘No, this is the first time I felt like a woman, that I felt feminine, since I lost my legs.’ And in that moment—to be able to bear witness to something [like that]—it just supersedes and transcends the show.”

After the panel discussion concluded, Hough surprised the crowd with a never-before-seen, Disney-themed dance he’d choreographed with his fiancée (and previous DWTS troupe member) Hayley Erbert, set to a unique rendition of “Kiss the Girl” from Disney’s The Little Mermaid.

Don’t miss Dancing with the Stars—hosted by supermodel and businesswoman Tyra Banks and new co-host, actor, and television personality Alfonso Ribeiro—when it returns to the ballroom Monday, September 19, at 8 p.m. EDT / 5 p.m. PDT, only on Disney+!

D23 Expo Reveals the World of Duffy and Friends—Including a New One

Sunday’s “The World of Duffy and Friends Revealed panel at D23 Expo was all about introducing American Disney fans up to Duffy, a teddy bear who has generated a genuine frenzy in the Disney Parks in Tokyo and Shanghai and has now transitioned across the globe, with a six-episode Disney+ stop-motion animation series now in the works.

Panel guests were first treated to a brief recap of the franchise, dating back to 2004 when the toy bear made his debut at Tokyo DisneySea (after a brief, unheralded appearance in the American parks), where he was given a name and a backstory: Minnie Mouse hand-stitched the bear and gave it to Mickey to take on his travels as he explored DisneySea’s many ports.

The bear, who resides in DisneySea’s Cape Cod Village, soon developed a life and ardent fan following of his own, and was joined by an expanding family of cuddly friends including:

  • Shellie May, a female bear who was described as being more adventurous than Duffy and who encourages Duff to try new things. She also loves making gifts for those in need.
  • Gelatoni, an artistic green cat who sees beauty in everything.
  • Stella Lou, a spunky, long-eared violet rabbit who loves to dance. She dreams of being a professional dancer and has taught Duffy what it means to dream.
  • Cookie Ann, a yellow puppy chef who is skilled at combining unrelated things to create something amazing.
  • Olu Mel, a green turtle who is a musician at one with nature. He plays his little ukulele and can create harmony among the birds, trees, and all natural things.
  • And the newest addition: Lina Bell, a pink fox detective who loves to learn and carries a little magnifying glass to help her solve mysteries. Her perspective on life: clues to life’s problems might be right in front of you so just open your eyes! Lina has spent a lot of time in the woods and has thus learned a lot about plants and forest creatures.

The panel’s moderator, Carlye Wisel, welcomed three panelists who have been involved in Duffy and Friends’ expanding presence at the parks: Senior Story Editor Charlie Watanabe, Daniel Jue (WDI Portfolio Creative Executive), and Eva Lee (Senior Manager Franchise and Partnership Development). They explained that the pastel-hued plushies are intended to provide comfort and relieve stress. Just holding one of the animals, Jue said, causes chemicals to be released into the brain that make us feel better. Watanabe added that the stressful Japanese culture has benefited greatly from having these animals to love.

In the Disney Parks, the animals are held facing outward so they can enjoy the same visual experience that their owners are having. Watanabe said that as Japan’s birthrate has gone down, the animals have filled a void as “surrogate children.”

Photos were shown of the incredibly long lines that formed at Shanghai Disney Resort last year when Lina Bell was introduced. Fan-created costumes for the plush animals further revealed their growing popularity. InStyle China even put Lina Bell on its cover as its “Friend of the Year.” The character had just been welcomed into Hong Kong Disneyland two days prior to the panel.

Asked if there will be more friends coming soon, Jue said cryptically that there “is always room for more in our imaginations,” with Lee adding, “If the story requires a new character, there might be more.”

Lee indicated that a little butterfly we see flying around the accompanying video shorts that Watanabe writes may be further developed in the future. The panel ended with a screening of a never-before-seen video adventure called “Lunch Box Mystery,” which will be released at a later date. The story involved Duffy losing his floral-design lunchbox in a garden. With Lina Bell’s sleuthing, it is discovered that the box was absconded by a pair of mischievous bright purple moles, one a bit larger than the other. The introduction of these two new characters in the Duffy World created quite the buzz among Duffy fans… who were each given a gift as they exited the panel: Duffy and Friends trading cards in a cute tote bag. Or perhaps “duff-el” bag would be more accurate.

Imagineers Share Entertaining Stories of Making the Impossible, Possible

What’s better than a story-packed Imagineering panel at D23 Expo? Two panels of Walt Disney Imagineers, back to back! For “Walt Disney Imagineering: 70 Years of Making the Impossible, Possible” on the Premiere Stage, filmmaker and author Leslie Iwerks hosted two sets of Imagineers, consecutively. The first, “Creative Imagination Panel,” included Charita Carter, Kevin Rafferty, Kim Irvine, Jeanette Lomboy, and Bob Weis. A second Imagineering team came in for the second half, focusing on innovation and technology, including Tommy Jones, Leslie Evans, Emily Dow, Alfredo Ayala, and Ron Hamming.

Both groups began by sketching in their careers for the gathered fans, including Ayala’s tale of getting caught playing “spin the beaker” in a college chemistry lab—an incident that eventually led to Imagineering after the professor who caught him became a mentor and recommended Imagineering as a career option for the budding innovator.

More such stories are included in Iwerks’ upcoming book, The Imagineering Story: The Official Biography of Walt Disney Imagineering, an expansion of her popular six-part Disney+ Original documentary series, The Imagineering Story. Iwerks followed the panel with a book signing for the few lucky fans who scored advance copies of the book at the Disney Publishing pavilion before it sold out. Additional copies will be on sale everywhere in November.

Other highlights of the Imagineers’ discussion on the Premiere Stage included:

  • Rafferty told the crowd his best and worst attraction pitching experiences. The best was for Toy Story Midway Mania!, which he and fellow Imagineer and now Disney Legend Rob’t Coltrin proposed to Disney’s top executives on the fly with just a few storyboards and concept sketches they happened to have ready—and “they bought it.” The worst was a meeting he had to cancel at the last minute when another attraction, close to opening, needed his attention. As a result, Disney Legend Marty Sklar, then Imagineering president, sent a memo to then CEO Michael Eisner that read simply, “Kevin Rafferty preferred to go to Florida rather than meet with you.” A copy of the menu projected on the stage’s oversized screens drew a laugh from the audience.
  • Irvine shared her excitement at posting a “color board” sketch that depicted the beautiful endpoint of an ongoing renovation of Sleeping Beauty Castle at Disneyland Park. She had the sketch posted on the barrier that was erected around the construction site. Unfortunately, the color board depicted just the castle, without its drawbridge. The morning the sketch was hung, Irvine was eavesdropping on guests’ reactions and overheard one guest telling another that Disney was apparently removing the castle’s drawbridge to limit access to Fantasyland. Irvine immediately had the sketch removed and later replaced it with a drawing that depicted the castle and the drawbridge.
  • Carter had her own eavesdropping story: Outside a recently opened attraction, she listened as a father tried to explain to his 14-year-old daughter how a particular special effect was accomplished—only to have the girl poke holes in every explanation. Finally, he threw up his hands and said in exasperation, “Honey, it’s just magic!”—and Carter knew that the Imagineers had done their job well.
  • Lomboy confessed that she used to think her favorite time at Disneyland Park was after hours, when the guests were gone—until the COVID-19 pandemic closed the park for more than 400 days. Now, she said, “I don’t like Disneyland closed, and I don’t like it empty.” When the guests are gone, she told the audience, “It’s a skeleton without a heartbeat, and that heartbeat is all of you.”
  • Leslie, whose father is Disney Legend Don Iwerks, recalled how her father came home from work at Imagineering one day with a rubber hand. The Audio-Animatronics® figure at the center of Great Moments with Mr. Lincoln got a new set of hands before it was installed at Disneyland (after its debut at the 1964–1965 New York World’s Fair), and Don had been the model for Mr. Lincoln’s new hands. As a result, Leslie recalled, “I had this rubber hand that I grew up with,” which she enjoyed hiding in unexpected places to surprise her friends.

One theme came through in almost all the stories the Imagineers shared—that the work of Walt Disney Imagineering is entirely focused on the guest experience. As Evans phrased it, “We’re building part of the story, but you all are building the other half.”

The Proud Family: Louder and Prouder Cast Reflects Upon D23 Expo

Following their Sunday panel at D23 Expo 2022 presented by Visa®, the voice cast from The Proud Family: Louder and Prouder reconvened backstage to reflect on what it meant to them to experience the appreciation that fans have for the Disney+ animated series in person—especially after months of working on their own, virtually, in the recording booth.

Kyla Pratt (Penny Proud), Paula Jai Parker (Trudy Proud), JoMarie Payton (Suga Mama), Karen Malina White (Dijonay Jones), Alisa Reyes (LaCienega Boulevardez) and Soleil Moon Frye (Zoey Howzer) sat down with D23 and revealed the powerful effect seeing fans in person had on them.

“It was an amazing feeling,” said Pratt. “I think that’s the reason we all do this show and love being a part of this show is getting that energy from the people who watch it. And it's moved them in so many ways for decades. So being here, we enjoy being with each other as our own little Proud Family, but everybody is an extension. So everybody who sees us and loves us and loves the show is a part of the Proud Family in some way, so being able to see them and spend time with them is an amazing feeling.”

Her co-star Payton agreed. “To listen to some of the stories that we’ve heard about how we helped them navigate through issues and life challenges and things like that, it’s just sometimes overwhelming to hear—which makes us even want to be better and better at what we do.”

It was especially gratifying to see a rainbow of ages, races and generations represented in the audience, “all different walks of life,” said Pratt. “That’s what speaks volumes about The Proud Family… we relate to every single person. It doesn’t matter where you're from, or what you look like or how you identify.”

“We really don’t know how we affect and touch people until we come to places like D23,” said Parker. “And we see people wearing our clothing and carrying our bags and telling us these stories. So it’s very important. This is why we do it.”

For Reyes, interacting with fans was especially poignant. “It was emotional, especially with me being a new mom with a 1-year-old,” she shared. “We had a Puerto Rican woman who said that she just resonated with all of us and that her daughter watches [our show] now… I think that for me, it was the full-circle moment, just the fact that we’ve impacted such a beautiful, diverse cultural community with so many topics that we weren’t really talking about before, but now we can. I think for me that’s what’s just life-changing.”

“It was really beautiful to hear these incredible people talking about how they felt represented and connected,” added Frye. “To see they’re such huge fans of The Proud Family and this beautiful community that loves each other so much is incredibly inspiring.”

Marvel Comics Stars Talk Comics-Movie Connections at Impromptu Panel

After an overwhelming positive response to Marvel Comics’ Saturday presentation at D23 Expo, the legendary comic book company’s editor-in-chief C.B. Cebulski and superstar artist Humberto Ramos took the stage again on Sunday for Marvel Fanfare, a more freewheeling—and wide-ranging—conversation.

Reuniting on the Hyperion Stage at the Anaheim Convention Center before an enthusiastic crowd, Cebulski jokingly warned fans that, as professionals working at the original comic book division of Marvel, they are typically no more in-the-know about secret developments in the Marvel Cinematic Universe than other fans.

“So I cannot tell you what's happening in Avengers: Secret Wars or who’s in the cast of the Fantastic Fourmovie,” Cebulski chuckled about two hotly anticipated, closely guarded film projects. But he did delve into the increasingly symbiotic creative relationship between the comic book creators and the film and television talent.

“Marvel’s become such an all-encompassing kind of brand,” the EIC explained. “But Marvel Comics, what we do, that’s the heart. That’s what I’ve always said: that’s where it started.”

He revealed that, particularly over the past decade, where the comics have always provided inspiration to Hollywood, now the MCU incarnations are having a similar influence on comics creators. “We take a lot of cues now from some of the cool stuff that they do in films or in games or in animation, or in the Disney+ shows,” Cebulski said. “We see things and we go, ‘Oh my God!’ One of their writers, one of their directors, one of their producers had an idea and they took it and they improved upon it.”

He continued, “A good example recently was Alligator Loki,” one of the multiversal incarnations of Tom Hiddleston’s Asgardian antihero seen on the Loki series on Disney+. “We fell in love with it. So I had a talk with some of the producers and said, ‘Hey, we’d love to take that idea of bringing Alligator Loki into Marvel Comics’—and we have.

“It’s that amazing synergy that we have now working between our divisions,” he added. “The producers are taking what they love from the comics and putting it on their screens. We’re taking what they have on their screens and put it back in the comics, so there’s this wonderful symbiotic relationship that we have.”

Ramos’ signature energetic interpretation of Spider-Man has become one of the most distinctive and influential visual takes on the web-slinger—one he’s noticed reflected on the big screen as well. Drawing on cues from a few preceding Spider-Man artists, Ramos drew the eyes on the superhero’s mask in increasingly expressive ways, reflecting Peter Parker’s emotional reaction in more visual terms—a somewhat controversial take, he admitted, that got him a light scolding from a legendary Spider-Man penciller.

“He said, ‘You’re the guy who draws those Spider-Man eyes changing,’” revealed Ramos. “He said, ‘You know this is a mask, right? You can’t move the eyes.’ And my answer was, ‘But you know we draw comic books, right? These guys aren’t real.’”

Validation came when Ramos saw Tom Holland’s first on-screen appearance as Spider-Man in Captain America: Civil War, where the eyes on the Spidey suit shift and change size, giving him a greater range of expression. ‘I was like YES! I knew it! In your face!’” laughed Ramos.

Christy Carlson Romano and Will Friedle of Kim Possible reunite at D23 Expo

Multiple generations of Kim Possible fans answered the call—or the beep—to assemble for a 20th anniversary panel that reunited co-stars and longtime friends Christy Carlson Romano and Will Friedle on Sunday at D23 Expo.

Panel host Khleo Thomas welcomed Romano and Friedle to the Disney Bundle Stage at the Anaheim Convention Center, where they were greeted by an enthusiastic crowd that included more than a few cosplayers dressed as Kim, Dr. Drakken, and Shego, and the actors immediately rewarded them with in-character catchphrases “What’s the sitch?” and “Booyah!”

Romano, who voiced can-do heroine Kim Possible, and Friedle, who voiced the reluctantly heroic Ron Stoppable, recalled their synergistic transitions from young live action actors for Disney-produced series—Even Stevens and Boy Meets World, respectively—and admitted they never imagined the animated series would become a beloved institution, with its popularity continuing for two decades and counting.

“Kim wasn’t just some superficial high school chick. She was so three-dimensional,” Romano offered on why her character struck such a resonant chord. “Something cool about Kim is that she was the change. She didn’t talk about it. She didn’t have to campaign for it. She just was powerful… She had those people supporting her, and if they were female, if they were male, it didn’t really matter. At the end of the day, it was about community impact. It was about saving the day and being a good person. That’s what she really represented.”

“I think it’s Kim, mostly, but I also think the relationship between Kim and Ron was really special,” added Friedle. “That’s something that people really liked and were big fans of, myself included. When I read the script that Ron was actually going to get to date Kim, I was like, ‘Oh yeah—he did it. He did it!’”

Along with the groundbreaking female hero/male sidekick dynamic, Romano credits the then first-time collaboration between Disney Channel at Disney Animation for creating a such a visually compelling design for the show.

“It was groundbreaking, because we have people who have designed Belle and other Disney princesses literally working on cels for Kim Possible,” she recalled. “It was a really exciting time to see that character. They played around with different hair colors, but that red hair—that’s iconic. Everything about Kim Possible is so iconic.”

Romano and Freidle, who currently co-host the podcast I Hear Voices, also revealed what they thought Kim and Ron would be up to all these years later.

“We’ve talked about this: We still think they’re married and they have kids, and they’re kind of like a spy version of The Incredibles,” said Friedle.

“And they’re [the parents of] twins, like Jim and Tim!” Romano added, referencing Kim’s twin brothers. “I do think that it could be great to see a brother-sister dynamic.”

Back to the Grid: Boxleitner Leads “40 Years of Tron” Celebration

Producers and forward-thinking special effects wizards reunited with Tron himself, actor Bruce Boxleitner, for a nostalgic look back at the movie Tron—40 years after the ground-breaking sci-fi classic’s release. As the panelists shared stories about how they brought the futuristic film to life, giant monitors showcased original concept art and rare behind-the-scenes photos, along with historic snapshots taken outside Hollywood’s historic Grauman’s Chinese Theater, where the film was first screened.

The biggest audience reaction came when a racy, never-before-seen clip was revealed showing Tron and Lora (Cindy Morgan) sharing a sexy private moment within the computer-generated grid. In the deleted scene, Lora is tracing her finger around the illuminated lines of Tron’s costume, showing him how the lines can help guide him through the grid like a map. As Lora’s finger extended further down Tron’s costume, Lora could be heard saying, “Follow this all the way down…” before the screen suddenly went dark.

Boxleitner remembered being up on a horse while shooting a Western movie when he first read the script for Tron. Although he wasn’t able to quite wrap his head around what the film would actually be about, he had recently lost the part of Luke Skywalker to Mark Hamill and decided to give it a shot.

In a surprise video greeting, Morgan recalled how the film’s writer/director, Steven Lisberger, helped her conceptualize an environment that would be created only after her filming was completed—including graphics of what the lightcycle vehicles would eventually look like. “I found the reality in the other actors’ eyes,” she explained, before thanking fans for four decades of support and enthusiasm.

Producer Donald Kushner recalled having to “sell” Disney on the idea for Tron. Ultimately, he got a greenlight only after he claimed another studio had expressed interest. But the studio had one condition: He and Lisberger had to create a sample effects reel, “which—by the way—we didn’t,” Kushner confessed. “We figured if we could get the plane in the air, we’d figure out how to land it.”

Visual effects supervisor Richard Winn Taylor II recalled how he took home a white motocross helmet and plussed it with tape to create the grid players’ helmets the night before they were to be featured in scenes. “We were inventing what we were doing as we went along,” he admitted.

John Scheele, the film’s effects technical supervisor, inspired laughs when he spoke about how he was recruited to help airbrush away unanticipated strange glowing effects emanating from the actors’ nether regions.

Boxleitner did take a moment to acknowledge his co-star and lifelong friend Jeff Bridges, who played brilliant computer programmer Kevin Flynn. “He still calls me ‘the Tronster,’ and I call him ‘Flynnster,’” said Boxletiner, who was mourning the recent loss of actor David Warner, who played the villainous Ed Dillinger. “I was hoping he would make the event,” Boxeltiner said of Warner, who passed away in July at age 80.

“I owe a great deal to this film,” said Boxleitner, who credited the classic for helping him land future sci-fi projects, including Babylon 5.

The panel ended by looking forward to the spring 2023 opening of TRON Lightcycle/Run, a new high-speed coaster opening in Tomorrowland in the Magic Kingdom at Walt Disney World Resort. Scot Drake, the Imagineer who oversaw the attraction’s debut in Shanghai Disney Resort, recalled that his initial challenge was “to immerse guests in the grid like never before…. When you get launched into the grid, face first… it’s something you never forget!”

“I need to ride that thing!,” Boxleitner proclaimed. And judging by the audience’s cheers, he’s not alone in feeling that anticipation!

The Proud Family: Louder and Prouder Spills Family Secrets at D23 Expo

Fans were in for a real treat Sunday morning when the voice cast and creatives of The Proud Family: Louder and Prouder appeared on the Premiere Stage during D23 Expo presented by Visa®. EJ Johnson, who lends his voice to the character Michael Collins, hosted the panel, and was joined by Bruce W. Smith (creator and executive producer), Ralph Farquhar (executive producer), Kyla Pratt (voice of Penny Proud), Paula Jai Parker (voice of Trudy Proud), JoMarie Payton (voice of Suga Mama), Cedric the Entertainer (voice of Uncle Bobby), Karen Malina White (voice of Dijonay Jones), Soleil Moon Frye (voice of Zoey Howzer), Alisa Reyes (voice of LaCienega Boulevardez), and Keke Palmer (voice of Maya-Leibowitz-Jenkins).

From sharing what’s ahead for the Prouds to doing a live table read and manifesting dream guest stars, The Proud Family: Louder and Prouder team pulled out all the stops for some of their biggest fans.

Additionally, the official trailer for Season 2 dropped this weekend amidst the festivities. The Proud Family: Louder and Prouder returns in February 2023, exclusively on Disney+. “Season 1 was the appetizer,” Smith said, “and Season 2 is the entrée.”

While the cast and creatives were reluctant to divulge too much about the upcoming season, they did tease an episode in which Penny is sent to live with Suga Mama. And fans viewed an exclusive scene from the Season 2 premiere, which is a continuation of the Season 1 cliffhanger, “Old Towne Road.”

The Proud Family: Louder and Prouder picks up the story of its central character, Penny Proud, and includes her madcap family: parents Oscar and Trudy, twin siblings BeBe and CeCe, and grandmother Suga Mama (and Puff!). Of course, it would not be The Proud Family without Penny’s loyal crew: Dijonay, LaCienega, Zoey, and Maya, among others.

“The interesting thing about doing this show this time around is that right now a great part of our audience were kids in 2001 and the show is being made by those kids,” Farquhar said.

Cedric the Entertainer remarked how honored he is to be a part of The Proud Family—one of the few animated series centered around a Black family—that not only triumphantly returned after 20 years, but also added even more diverse characters.

“I feel fans of the show—just like me—can relate to the series in so many ways,” Pratt said. “Everyone can find a character that they can relate to, and it’s easy to watch TV when you see someone who is like you onscreen. It helps you feel more seen in so many ways.”

Pratt added, “It’s timeless; it’s a show that you can watch any time.”

The series has welcomed a star-studded lineup of guest stars and recurring characters on The Proud Familyand The Proud Family: Louder and Prouder over the years, including Disney Legend Anthony Anderson, Beyoncé, Lizzo, Al Roker, Kobe Bryant, and Gabrielle Union, to name a few. During the Q&A portion, a fan asked the cast to name their dream guest star, and the panel agreed they have their sights set on former First Lady Michelle Obama. Recording artists Saweetie and Doja Cat are also atop some cast members’ wish lists.

What hijinks will the Prouds get into next? Tune in to find out!

Mickey: The Story of a Mouse Documentary Previewed at D23 Expo

Mickey Mouse fans at D23 Expo presented by Visa® were the first to see the new teaser trailer for Mickey: The Story of a Mouse, a Disney Original Documentary that will debut Friday, November 18, on Disney+.

The panel discussion following the trailer reveal was hosted by Bret Iwan, the official voice of Mickey Mouse, who introduced the filmmakers: director Jeff Malmberg (Marwencol) and producers Meghan Walsh and Chris Shellen. When the concept of a Mickey Mouse documentary was brought to him, Malmberg said, “I instantly got why that would be a fabulous thing to do.” Mickey, he continued, is “a symbol of joy for everyone, everywhere, all the time.”

The documentary traces the history and impact of Mickey, both culturally and personally for fans, and also introduces a brand-new short, Mickey in a Minute, animated in part by legendary Disney animator Eric Goldberg, who also joined the panel. The new short takes Mickey through his 90-plus years of history with all-new animation recreating some of his most beloved roles—as well as showcasing Mickey’s different looks across the decades.

It was a considerable responsibility, Goldberg said: “As animators, we have the specter of all the greats who came before us looking over our shoulders, saying, ‘Don’t mess it up.’” Goldberg worked on animating the new hand-drawn short for about a year, along with Disney animation veterans Mark Henn and Randy Haycock—all of them thrilled to be creating a fresh Mickey tale. “When we get an opportunity like this, we pull out all the stops,” Goldberg said.

Also on the panel was animator and Disney Legend Floyd Norman, who shared, “To me, Mickey’s always been real.” When Norman left animation in the 1980s and for a time wrote Mickey Mouse stories, he discovered it was easier than he expected because “I knew this character. I had known him all my life.”

During the making of Mickey: The Story of a Mouse, the filmmakers discovered that sentiment was shared by fans of all ages, backgrounds, and geographic locations. As panelist Rebecca Cline, director of the Walt Disney Archives, put it, “He’s a part of our DNA—with an emphasis on the D.”

The joy Mickey engenders, Malmberg said, was “endlessly fascinating” to document. “Even though it’s universal, it’s also very particular and personal,” he said.

That’s especially true for Goldberg. “My favorite kind of animation is animation that looks like it’s enjoying itself onscreen,” he said. “And who better embodies that than Mickey Mouse?”

Mickey: The Story of a Mouse also delves into the more difficult parts of Mickey’s legacy—his appropriation by artists and activists outside of Disney, for their own agendas or expression. “We wanted to make sure we got to tell all of the story,” Malmberg said—even the uncomfortable parts.

To close the discussion, Iwan asked each panelist to offer one word that expressed their experience of Mickey Mouse. Their answers colored in many aspects of the Mouse: “joy” (Malmberg), “perseverance” (Shellen), “layered” (Walsh), “animation” (Goldberg), “resourceful” (Norman), and “optimism” (Cline).

Iwan’s own answer: “Walt.” As the official voice of Mickey, “I’m just doing my part to fill in for Walt,” he said.

Mickey: The Story of a Mouse is directed by Malmberg and produced by Academy Award® winner Morgan Neville, producing under his company, Tremolo Productions. Walsh and Shellen are also producers. Caitrin Rogers serves as executive producer. Marjon Javadi is vice president of Originals for Documentaries and Docuseries for Disney Branded Television/Disney Original Documentary. The film is edited by Jake Hostetter, Aaron Wickenden; cinematography by Antonio Cisneros; sound design by Lawrence Everson; and music by Daniel Wohl. The film had its World Premiere at the South by Southwest Film Festival earlier this year and also screened at this year’s Sun Valley Film Festival and Newport Summer Film Series, among others.

All the Magic from Studio Showcase, Day 2: Marvel Studios, Lucasfilm, and 20th Century Studios

By Courtney Potter

The Studio Showcase for D23 Expo 2022 presented by Visa® was so epic, they had to split it up into two massive presentations... and this morning in Hall D23, Day 2—featuring the latest and greatest from Lucasfilm, Marvel Studios, and 20th Century Studios—fired up fans with more new announcements; more never-before-seen footage; and more stars from Disney’s biggest streaming and theatrical titles slated for the coming months and beyond.

Kicking off the proceedings, Alan Bergman, chairman, The Walt Disney Studios, reflected on the 13-year history of D23 Expo—as well as the evolution of the Studios group. “That [first] year, none of the iconic studios you’ll hear from today were part of the company,” Bergman explained. “It was just Disney Animation, Disney Live Action, and Pixar. We announced the Marvel acquisition just before our first Expo in 2009. Then three years later, we added Lucasfilm, and in 2019, 20th Century Studios. I’ve been at Disney for 26 years, so it’s been incredibly exciting to welcome each of them to our Studio family. And like Disney and Pixar, each of these studios has a phenomenal legacy of storytelling.”

Bergman was then joined by Kathleen Kennedy, president, Lucasfilm; Kevin Feige, producer and president, Marvel Studios; and James Cameron, director of 20th Century Studios’ upcoming Avatar: The Way of Water, to showcase a veritable smorgasbord of incredible content to come.

Much to the delight of the assembled crowd, Luna and his costars unveiled a final trailer for the series.

The decisions they make have real consequences, and the stakes for them—and the galaxy—couldn’t be higher. The series debuts with three episodes on Disney+ on September 21.

Willow
Next, Kennedy welcomed Warwick Davis to the stage to talk about the new Disney+ series Willow—a live-action fantasy-adventure series that returns to the world of Andowyne that we first met in the 1988 feature film (directed by Ron Howard and produced by Disney Legend George Lucas). Filoni delighted the audience by sharing an official trailer for the shorts.

All six shorts will debut October 26 on Disney+.

Ahsoka
And speaking of a certain popular Jedi, Filoni shared with Hall D23 how much the character of Ahsoka means to him—having crafted her story since her 2008 debut in the animated series Star Wars: The Clone Wars through her live-action debut in The Mandalorian. He’s hard at work finishing the film—the highly anticipated sequel to the biggest film of all time, Avatar—so he couldn’t join D23 Expo in person. But the film’s producer, Jon Landau, helped welcome returning cast members Sam Worthington (Jake Sully), Zoe Saldaña (Neytiri), Sigourney Weaver (Kiri), and Stephen Lang (Colonel Miles Quaritch)—plus new-generation cast members Jamie Flatters (Neteyam), Jack Champion (Spider), Bailey Bass (Tsireya), and Trinity Jo-Li Bliss (Tuk)—before the audience was treated to several scenes from the new film! Fans were invited to don a pair of Dolby 3D glasses (a Hall D23 first!) to get fully immersed in the brand-new footage.

Christmas Comes Early for Fans of The Santa Clauses

Fans were in for a merry evening when the cast and crew of The Santa Clauses appeared on the Premiere Stage to talk about the Disney+ Original series (premiering Wednesday, November 16, with two episodes) and share a trio of exclusive clips. Based on the blockbuster feature films, The Santa Clauses finds Scott Calvin (Disney Legend Tim Allen) on the brink of his 65th birthday and realizing he can’t be Santa forever. And since there can’t be a world without a Santa Claus, he sets out to find a suitable replacement while preparing his family for a new adventure south of the pole.

“If you’ve got a job and a family, you can work so hard that you forget why you’re doing what you’re doing,” Allen said. “He’s working so hard to be Santa Claus, to do everything right, that his kids are growing up without other humans. It’s very complex.”

You wouldn’t know it when you see them in character, but it’s been 16 years since Allen and costar Elizabeth Mitchell suited up as Santa Claus and Mrs. Claus, respectively. So, when the time came for them to reprise their roles in this new series, Allen joked he had to put in extra work to embody his character. “She puts her hair in a bun and then she looks gorgeous. I’ve got to gain just 138 lbs. of pork sausage!” the actor and comedian joked. “It’s not magic. I actually gained the weight. You think [Tom] Hanks is a special guy? I gained 138 lbs. every day! All I ate was gluten and trans fats!” After the laughter in the room subsided, Allen asked Mitchell how she really felt about her hair and makeup... and she proved his point by admitting, “I thought it was fine. I really did!” In fact, she added, “It was really nice to put on [that costume] and walk through a room full of kids, seeing how they respond to it. It was really magical.”

Joining Allen and Mitchell onstage were costars Elizabeth Allen-Dick (Sandra), Devin Bright (Noel), Austin Kane (Cal), Matilda Lawler (Bett), Rupali Redd (Grace), and Kal Pen (Simon), plus executive producers Jack Burditt and Jason Winer. Not only does Allen-Dick play Allen’s daughter onscreen, but she’s his daughter in real-life! “From a dad's point of view, it's one of those moments in life that I can't describe,” Allen said of seeing his daughter act. “She's respectful to the crew and everybody around her, she does her job, she adds value, and she's a surprise in a huge way. It means the world to me.”

Fans Get a Sneak Peek at Zootopia+ at D23 Expo

Saturday at D23 Expo, the directing team behind Zootopia+ treated fans to an advance screening of two episodes of the animated series, coming to Disney+ on November 9.

The show, from Walt Disney Animation Studios, heads back to the fast-paced mammal metropolis, diving deeper into the lives of some of the Oscar®-winning feature film’s most intriguing residents.

Before screening the debut episode, “Hopp on Board,” and the fourth episode, “Godfather of the Bride,” directors Josie Trinidad and Trent Correy spoke about their approach to the series, which they began working on in 2020.

“The series was all about bringing joy, especially during the pandemic. We absolutely just want to bring some smiles to people,” Correy said.

Each episode of Zootopia+ interconnects with the timeline of the original film, while offering a new perspective on the characters, locations, and scenarios that fans know from Zootopia, the the filmmakers shared.

“They seamlessly weave in and out of the movie while being jam-packed with familiar scenes, Easter eggs—and you might even get to see Nick and Judy,” Correy said.

He continued, “Each episode embraces a different style of filmmaking. We have an action film, a reality TV [episode], a musical, and we have a film noir period piece, a talent show competition, and everyone’s guilty pleasure, the rom com, giving each of episode its own unique and distinctive look and feel.”

Encanto Fans Enjoy Surprise Guests, a Musical Performance, and More

An Encanto panel Saturday at D23 Expo brought together the filmmakers and the cast for some lively storytelling, a surprise guest, a musical performance, and the announcement of an upcoming live staging of the movie’s story and music.

Thousands of enthusiastic fans filled the Premiere Stage at the Anaheim Convention Center as event host Tamron Hall began by introducing Jared Bush (who directed the film with Byron Howard and co-director Charise Castro Smith, and wrote the screenplay with Castro Smith) and producers Yvett Merino and Clark Spencer.

The overwhelming fan response to the film was “completely surreal,” Bush said, addressing the audience. “It means so much to us that it means so much to you.”

“It really just means so much to me that people see themselves in the movie,” Merino added.

Bush and Howard, who together also directed Zootopia, “have this incredible ability to create these amazing worlds,” Spencer said.

The filmmaking trio were next joined by Jamal Sims, the choreographer for the movie, who shared a rare clip of live-action reference footage of dancers performing the dance moves for the hit song “We Don’t Talk About Bruno.” It was the first Encanto song he worked on, he revealed, “and we kind of did it in one day and sent it over [to the filmmakers].” He remembered thinking after working on that first, amazing tune, “All the rest are not going to be as good, right?”—only to be disproved again and again by the great numbers provided by songwriter Lin-Manuel Miranda.

Miranda himself next joined the panel, linked in remotely by AT&T 5G technology and seen sitting in a chair on a large screen across from the other panelists—looking for all the world like he could step out onto the stage any minute. “I’m trapped in Bruno’s tower!” he joked.

The Tony®-winning composer, writer, and actor said he’d been preparing for his career ever since “I was pretending to be Sebastian the crab on my desk in the fourth grade”—referencing Disney’s The Little Mermaid—and had enthusiastically pursued a creative role in the Latin American film he had heard Walt Disney Animation Studios was working on.

Development of Encanto took place before the COVID-19 pandemic forced isolation on the filmmaking team, which meant most of production was done remotely—with team members working from their homes, including Miranda. He composed “Bruno” and “Surface Pressure” in the two months immediately following the lockdown, he recounted, when he was living in isolation with his family and his in-laws. The songs he worked on reflected that situation. “‘Surface Pressure’ was about ‘How do I protect my family,’” he said, while “Bruno” was about “what am I allowed to talk about in front of [my wife’s] mother?”

After Miranda signed off from his remote connection, the panelists were joined by Encanto cast members Wilmer Valderrama, Mauro Castillo, Diane Guerrero, Carolina Gaitán, and Adassa. Getting together onstage in person, as they were today, was a pleasure this chosen family didn’t get to enjoy during the remote recording sessions, due to the pandemic. “No one ever met anyone in person until the night of the premiere,” Merino said.

“Even though we were apart, we were working together,” Clark said.

When the actors were asked by Hall about their reactions to seeing the designs for their characters, Valderrama responded, “You forget what the character looks like [when you’re performing]. You’re just trying to find the beauty and the humanity within yourself as a character.”

Just before the panel’s finale, Hall shared the big news of the day: “Encanto at the Hollywood Bowl” was announced for a two-night stand on November 11 and 12 at the famous outdoor amphitheater. For those evenings, “The Hollywood Bowl will transform into Casa Madrigal,” she said, creating “an immersive concertgoing experience.” Those attending the panel will have access to an early ticket-buying window with a code Hall shared.

Appropriately, the Encanto panel ended with the five cast members joining for an energetic performance of “We Don’t Talk About Bruno,” with the audience invited to sing along!

Magic in the Air: Muppet Christmas Carol outtakes and more

Muppet favorite Gonzo the Great channeled his Charles Dickens persona to open a merry and whimsical D23 Expo panel celebrating the 30th anniversary of The Muppet Christmas Carol. Not anyone could follow a personality as mammoth as Gonzo’s, but D23 Expo managed to find a moderator who was more than up for the challenge: RuPaul’s Drag Race alum and self-described “huge Muppet fan” Nina West, debuting a Kermit couture gown created especially for the event.

The first surprise for fans at the Premiere Stage was a Q&A with some very familiar panelists: Kermit the Frog, who played Bob Cratchit; Miss Piggy (Emily Cratchit); Kermit’s nephew, Robin (Tiny Tim); and; of course; Gonzo, who generously invited West to address him as “Chuckie,” a less formal take on “Charles.”

From the onset, friction developed between Piggy and West, forcing Kermit to act as a go-between when Piggy turned her snout on West, refusing to speak to her directly. Kudos to Piggy for laughing off a real low blow from West, who cracked that Piggy had undoubtedly collected several Blue Ribbons during her long career.

Since Dickens’ A Christmas Carol has long been in the public domain, allowing Hollywood to remake the timeless classic without having to pay royalties, the Muppets suggested future spin-off titles. Robin got a big laugh when he threw out his pitch for The Muppet Christmas Carol 2: Tiny Tim, Winter Soldier.

A behind-the-scenes gag reel from the original production was shown with bloopers revealing the lovable, ginger-haired giant Ghost of Christmas Present accidently slapping Michael Caine (Ebenezer Scrooge) in the face during a musical number. Other outtakes revealed Gonzo accidentally snagging his head with a grappling hook and Dr. Bunsen Honeydew flubbing a line and cursing in a very Muppet-like fashion by grumbling “poo poo.”

Next up was a Q&A with the film’s director, Brian Henson, songwriter Paul Williams, costume designer Polly Smith, and much beloved puppeteer Dave Goelz, who began voicing Gonzo, Dr. Honeydew, Waldorf, and others way back in 1976. A little trivia: Goelz’ first association with Disney dates back to 1961, when he played an extra in The Parent Trap.

Henson began explaining how it was his agent who originally came up with the idea for having the Muppets dramatize Dickens’ classic—but as an ABC TV movie with a budget of $3 million, before it ended up becoming a $5 million feature film, co-produced by Walt Disney Productions (as The Walt Disney Company was then called). With the film shoot so closely following the devastating death of Muppets creator Jim Henson, Brian Henson recalled how nervous he was, wondering how they’d fare without his father’s guidance. “We were scared and careful… having just lost my dad,” he said.

Williams said he was a Muppets fan even before his association with the colorful troupe began. Though he has an illustrious songwriting career, Williams admitted his “phone was not ringing off the hook” when Brian Henson called to invite him to write the songs for the film, which would also mark Henson’s big-screen directorial debut. Williams, who had just committed to a sober life free of alcohol and drugs, felt blessed to be given the assignment to create emotional songs for a feel-good project about a man who was addicted to greed and undergoing a spiritual awakening. “Talk about timing,” Williams said.

His one great disappointment about the project was a call from studio executive Jeffrey Katzenberg to cut a love song (“When Love Is Gone”) that he wrote for Caine and actress Meredith Braun, who played Scrooge’s lost love, Belle. Katzenberg made the tough call when he saw a few children exiting the theater to take bathroom breaks during the musical number when the film was screened for test audiences. “There was not a lot of laughing in there, Brian,” Henson remembered being told by Katzenberg. Though Katzenberg agreed to have the song reinserted into the film for home video editions, the negative of the scene was somehow lost forever. Then, two years ago, a version of the scene taken from the negative was found, allowing the song to be shown to audiences in celebration of the film’s 30th anniversary. Beginning December 11, Disney+ viewers will be able to see the long-lost musical scene as a special feature.

As an added Christmas treat to panel attendees, Jodi Benson, the voice of The Little Mermaid’s original Ariel, came out onstage to sing a full version of the song. “I’m so honored to be here to share a lost treasure that’s been found,” said Benson, who added that she could relate to Williams’ disappointment, as Katzenberg had also considered cutting “Part of Your World” from her 1989 animated classic when he witnessed a 4-year-old boy drop his bucket of popcorn during a test screening.

The look was priceless on Williams’ face as he sat back in his chair brandishing a big grin as he listened to Benson sing the song he wrote more than three decades earlier.

As one final surprise for fans, Kermit, Piggy, Gonzo, Robin, Fozzie and the other Muppet cast came out in their original Christmas Carol costumes to sing a medley of the film’s songs, accompanied by West. For the fortunate D23 fans in attendance, Christmas this year most definitely came early!

Stars of National Treasure: Edge of History share a sneak peak of the Disney+ series

Stars from National Treasure: Edge of History treated fans to some behind-the-scenes intel on the highly anticipated Disney+ Original series on Saturday at D23 Expo presented by Visa®. The show debuts December 14 with two episodes.

Lead actress Lisette Olivera (Jess Valenzuela) was joined by castmates Jordan Rodrigues (Ethan), Antonio Cipriano (Oren), and Zuri Reed (Tasha), for a panel during which they showcased a clip about the making of the series before taking part in a Disney trivia challenge.

The series, an expansion of the National Treasure movie franchise, is told from the point of view of Jess, a brilliant and resourceful DREAMer in search of answers about her family. She embarks on the adventure of a lifetime to uncover the truth about her past and save a lost Pan-American treasure. The series also stars Oscar® winner Catherine Zeta-Jones, who plays fellow treasure hunter Billie Pearce.

“Thank you, guys, so much for coming out to support our show. I know we have to wait a little bit longer until you guys can see it, but we have a little taste [of the series] for you all to enjoy,” Olivera said before the clip aired.

Fans were then given a glimpse of the action-packed journey Jess undertakes with her friends Ethan, Oren, and Tasha, as well as more about Billie.

“She’s a black market antiquity dealer and she plays a cat-and-mouse game with Jess,” Zeta-Jones teases in the clip. “The audience is figuring it out as we are figuring it out.”

Justin Bartha, who reprises his role as Riley Poole from the original film and the sequel, National Treasure: Book of Secrets, said, “What’s wonderful about the National Treasure movies and now TV show is that it uses American history as a jumping off point for exciting treasure hunts. What sets the television show apart is that it’s a different world now. Exploring American history was a lot different 20 years ago.”

The series will air later this year exclusively on Disney+.

Marvel’s Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur Cast and Creatives Reveal Series Premiere

Saturday at D23 Expo presented by Visa®, cast and creatives behind Marvel’s Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur debuted the highly anticipated series’ premiere.

After the screening, producer Pilar Flynn hosted a Q&A with executive producers Steve Loter and Laurence Fishburne, and voice cast Diamond White (Lunella/Moon Girl), Fred Tatasciore (Devil Dinosaur), and Libe Barer (Casey). Each shared their excitement being a part of the groundbreaking new series to fans in attendance.

Marvel’s Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur, based on Marvel’s hit comic books, follows the adventures of 13-year-old super-genius Lunella Lafayette and her 10-ton Tyrannosaurus rex, Devil Dinosaur. After Lunella accidentally brings Devil Dinosaur into present-day New York City, the duo works together to protect the city’s Lower East Side from danger.

The voice cast also includes Alfre Woodard as Mimi; Sasheer Zamata as Adria; Jermaine Fowler as James Jr.; and Gary Anthony Williams as Pops. Additionally, Fishburne will voice a character named The Beyonder in the series.

Lunella’s arrival marks the first Black female Super Hero in a Marvel adaptation. “She’s as smart as Tony Stark and Reed Richards—and she’s only 13 years old,” Fishburne said excitedly. The award-winning actor added that he wanted to show a multi-generation tight-knit family because it’s a “family relationship rarely seen on TV—especially within animation.”

Loter shared how he secured three-time Grammy Award® winner Raphael Saadiq as the series executive music producer. “I heard he was doing a signing at Amoeba Music so I brought a stack of records with me and when it was my turn I pitched the series to him,” Loter continued, “and when he finished signing the last record he said, ‘I’m in.’”

Marvel’s Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur debuts in 2023 on Disney Channel.

New cities, artwork shared for Disney100: The Exhibition at D23 Expo

Where can you see the original “Feed the Birds” snow globe from Mary Poppins, an actual ride vehicle from Disneyland Park’s Peter Pan’s Flight, and the chimes used to make Tinker Bell’s iconic jingle? Only within Disney100: The Exhibition, a celebration of The Walt Disney Company’s 100th anniversary that opens February 18 at The Franklin Institute in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, beginning a five-year journey across the continent.

That official opening day and many more details and exclusive visual treats were among the revelations Saturday at D23 Expo, as part of the panel “The Making of Disney100: The Exhibition,” presented on the Backlot Stage. Becky Cline, director of the Walt Disney Archives—the main creative force behind the exhibition—both led and moderated the panel. The challenge of putting the show together, she said, was, “How do you tell the story of 100 years of Disney in 15,000 square feet?”

An early decision was that the exhibition would not be presented in strict chronological order but rather thematically, in 10 galleries inspired by “Walt Disney’s philosophies,” explained Paula Sigman-Lowery, the exhibition’s curator. “I didn’t want people to have to walk through eight galleries before they meet Olaf,” she said. After an introductory gallery introducing Walt Disney and his early life and creations, subsequent galleries are based on themes such as sound and music, story development, technological innovation, and the spirit of adventure.

Of course, with the Walt Disney Archives behind the show, priceless artifacts will be showcased throughout. The Archives worked with Berlin, Germany-based exhibition design firm StudioTK to create “a stage for all these beautiful artifacts… to make them shine,” said Annette Doonan, StudioTK’s head of content. “They are the real stars of the exhibition.”

More than 250 rarely seen original artworks and artifacts, costumes and props, and other memorabilia will be included in the exhibition, celebrating feature filmmaking from Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs to Strange World, Disney Parks and products, Disney music, and more, including the latest members of the Disney family: Pixar, Star Wars, Marvel, and National Geographic.

StudioTK also created “unique interactive experiences” for each gallery. For example, while the actual prop book used at the opening of Sleeping Beauty will be on display, “everybody will get to see every page” inside the book, Doonan revealed, through an original video display—and each page is further brought to life with new animated touches.

Such artifacts are the “crown jewels” of the Walt Disney Archives, said Archives curator Kelsey Williams, who shared images of some other items heading to Philadelphia, including a unique Pinocchio maquette, that Mary Poppins snow globe, and Cinderella’s glass slipper.

The panel also revealed two more stops along the North American tour: Chicago, Illinois, Walt Disney’s birthplace; and Kansas City, Missouri, where Walt spent much of his youth and where he founded his first animation studio, Laugh-O-gram Films, Inc. Meanwhile, a second unit of the exhibition—with the same design as the U.S. unit but with many unique artifacts of its own—will open April 18 in Olympic Park, Munich, Germany. More European stops will be announced in the coming months.

The panelists also shared the creation and final design of the 12 colorful posters designed for the exhibition by David Pacheco and Shane Enoch, who also joined the panel. In addition to the collectible posters, the exhibition will have a colorful catalog, including essays by film historian and critic Leonard Maltin; Imagineer Joe Rohde; Disney producer, director, and author Don Hahn; and others. A coffee-table book inspired by the exhibition, titled The Story of Disney: 100 Years of Wonder will also be available next year, along with a new book of quotations from Walt Disney (Walt Disney’s Words), and a commemorative edition of Bob Thomas’ definitive biography, Walt Disney: An American Original.

As Cline put it, “It didn’t really start with a mouse. It started with a man. Walt Disney.”

It’s been 29 years since someone lit the Black Flame Candle and resurrected the 17th century Sanderson sisters, and they are looking for revenge. Now it is up to three high school students to stop the ravenous witches from wreaking a new kind of havoc on Salem before dawn on All Hallow’s Eve. The Disney+ Original Movie also stars Sam Richardson, Doug Jones, Hannah Waddingham, Whitney Peak, Belissa Escobedo, Lilia Buckingham, Froy Gutierrez, and Tony Hale. The film is produced by Lynn Harris, with Ralph Winter, David Kirschner, and Adam Shankman serving as executive producers. Hocus Pocus 2 premieres Friday, September 30, exclusively on Disney+.

The stars of Disenchanted, including Amy Adams, newly inducted Disney Legends Patrick Dempsey and Idina Menzel, Maya Rudolph, James Marsden, and Gabriella Baldacchino took the stage to share their excitement for the upcoming feature film, which debuts Friday, November 24, exclusively on Disney+.

Adams and Rudolph joined their co-stars onstage donning Disney outfits, complete with churros and bubble wands in hand. After the cast shared their excitement for the next installment of the beloved franchise, the audience was treated to an all-new trailer.

In Disenchanted, it has been 15 years since Giselle (Adams) and Robert (Dempsey) wed, but Giselle has grown disillusioned with life in the city. So, they move their growing family to the sleepy suburban community of Monroeville in search of a more fairy tale life. Unfortunately, it isn’t the quick fix she had hoped for. Suburbia has a whole new set of rules and a local queen bee, Malvina Monroe (Maya Rudolph), who makes Giselle feel more out of place than ever. Frustrated that her happily ever after hasn’t been so easy to find, she turns to the magic of Andalasia for help, accidentally transforming the entire town into a real-life fairy tale and placing her family’s future happiness in jeopardy. Now, Giselle is in a race against time to reverse the spell and determine what happily ever after truly means to her and her family.

Peter Pan & Wendy
Peter Pan & Wendy spotlights iconic characters in a whole new way. Joining Bailey on stage were cast members Alexander Molony (Peter Pan), Ever Anderson (Wendy), Alyssa Wapanâtahk (Tiger Lily), and Captain Hook himself: Jude Law.

The new film dives deeper into Wendy’s story as she joins the boy who refuses to grow up on a magical journey to Neverland and reveals the history behind Peter Pan’s rivalry with one of Disney’s most memorable villains. The cast discussed what fans can expect from the new film and revealed an exclusive first look at the film for the D23 audience. Directed by David Lowery and produced by Jim Whitaker, the live-action reimagining of the 1953 animated classic begins streaming on Disney+ in 2023.

Haunted Mansion
Haunted Mansion director Justin Simien—who used to work at Disneyland—joined Bailey to discuss the ghostly adventure. Inspired by the classic theme park attraction, Haunted Mansion is about a woman and her son who enlist a motley crew of so-called spiritual experts to help rid their home of supernatural squatters. They shared a sneak peek of the film exclusively with the D23 Expo crowd, then welcomed the queen of scary movies, Jamie Lee Curtis, who made an unforgettable entrance aboard a Haunted Mansion doom buggy. Curtis plays Madame Leota in the film, which releases next year.

MUFASA: The Lion King
MUFASA: The Lion King, a prequel to The Lion King, won’t release until 2024, but director Barry Jenkins was on hand to show a never-before-seen sneak peek and share a little about the film, which is currently in production. Told in flashbacks—Rafiki, Timon, and Pumbaa tell the story of Mufasa to a young lion cub—Mufasa reveals the rise of one of the greatest kings of the Pride Lands.

Snow White
Who is the fairest of them all? The live-action reimagining of the classic tale stars Rachel Zegler in the title role and Gal Gadot as Snow White’s Stepmother, The Queen. The film’s two stars joined Bailey to talk about their roles and to share a very early glimpse at the iconic characters in the 2024 film, which is directed by Marc Webb, produced by Marc Platt, and features new songs by Tony®-, Grammy®- and Oscar®-winning songwriters Pasek and Paul.

The Little Mermaid
Swimming onto the big screen in May 2023, Halle Bailey stars as Ariel in the live action adaptation of the beloved animated classic film. Director Rob Marshall took a break from post-production under the sea to share a sneak peek of the film’s “Part of Your World” sequence. Bailey later joined Marshall on stage, adding portraying the iconic mermaid is a lifelong goal.

Featuring fan-favorite songs plus four new songs penned by Alan Menken and Lin-Manuel Miranda, the feature film also stars Melissa McCarthy as Ursula and Javier Bardem as Triton.

PIXAR

Pixar’s Pete Docter took the stage to share the upcoming slate for the animation studio. “These last few years have been a time of great change in the world,” said Docter. “And it’s led us at Pixar to think about the future. Or, if I’m channeling my inner Joe from Soul, I’d ask: ‘Why are we here? What’s our purpose?’ Well, for us, it’s to tell great animated stories. Whether those are theatrical feature films, streaming series, or shorts, we think telling stories is foundational to who we are as people. They really define us. And we believe in the power of animation to capture and reflect the stories of our own lives.”

Elemental
First up, filmmakers Peter Sohn and Denise Ream joined Docter on stage to discuss Elemental, an all-new, original feature film releasing on June 16, 2023. Sohn, who directs the film, shared the personal inspiration behind the film—a story of immigrants pursuing dreams in beautiful neighborhoods where language and cultures come together. Filmmakers introduced the characters in Elemental, which is set in a city where fire-, water-, land- and air-residents live together. Ember is a tough and fiery young woman, and Wade is a fun, sappy, go-with-the-flow guy. Helping bring them to life are Leah Lewis and Mamoudou Athie, who were warmly welcomed to the Hall D23 stage. Audience members got an exclusive look at the film and received a mini-poster featuring Ember and Wade.

Win or Lose
Win or Lose directors Carrie Hobson and Michael Yates provided a closer look at Pixar’s first-ever long-form series and what inspired it. The series follows the Pickles, a co-ed middle school softball team, in the week leading up to their championship game. Each episode takes place that same week, highlighting the perspective of a different main character—players, their parents, the umpire—each reflected in a unique visual style. Hobson and Yates revealed that Will Forte will voice Coach Dan in the series and shared a shout-out Forte recorded for the occasion, followed by a special clip just for fans. Win or Lose streams on Disney+ in Fall 2023.

Elio
Docter welcomed to the stage director Adrian Molina and producer Mary Alice Drumm to showcase for the first time ever plans for the original feature film Elio. In the story, 11-year-old dreamer Elio is artistic, creative and an avid indoorsman who finds it hard to fit in. Meanwhile, Mom Olga, who runs a top-secret military project, is working to decode a strange signal from outer space. But it’s Elio who makes contact, gets beamed into space and is subsequently mistaken for an intergalactic Ambassador for Earth. The voice of smart and super-confident Olga, America Ferrera, was invited on stage alongside Yonas Kibreab, who lends his voice to Elio. Kibreab revealed to the audience that Elio releases Spring 2024.

Inside Out 2
Before Docter could wrap Pixar’s portion of the show, he heard a voice from inside his head. Fortunately, it was actually the voice of Joy, Amy Poehler, who arrived on stage to huge applause—especially when she informed the audience that Inside Out 2 is in the works at Pixar. Director Kelsey Mann, producer Mark Nielsen, and writer Meg LeFauve are hard at work on the all-new adventure inside the head of now-teenager Riley—who may or may not be feeling all kinds of new Emotions. Inside Out 2, the follow-up to 2015’s Oscar- and Golden Globe®-winning feature film, is slated for release Summer 2024.

Walt Disney Animation Studios’ Chief Creative Officer Jennifer Lee took the stage to share the studio’s plans for the yearlong 100-year anniversary celebration. Lee said, “At Walt Disney Animation Studios, the studio that started it all, on the eve of our 100th anniversary, we see today as a moment of privilege and promise—a privilege to be stewards of a studio and a dream that Walt and his brother, Roy, started a century ago and a promise to continue to take risks in our storytelling—and to explore and expand and turn the possible into the actual, just as Walt did.”

Zootopia+
Lee discussed the opportunities Disney+ has created at Disney Animation, reviewing the slate of shows heading to the streamer, including new series like Zootopia+, launching on Disney+ November 9. Fans saw a trailer for the new short-form series, which heads back to the fast-paced mammal metropolis, diving deeper into the lives of some of the Oscar-winning feature film’s most intriguing residents.

Iwájú
Coming to Disney+ in 2023, Iwájú is an all-new original long-form series created in collaboration with Pan-African comic book entertainment company Kugali. Lee invited to the stage Kugali filmmakers Olufikayo Ziki Adeola, Hamid Ibrahim, and Tolu Olowofoyeku, who introduced the setting of the series—a love letter to Lagos, Nigeria. Olowofoyeku and Ibrahim described the world of Iwájú as a futuristic depiction—a world bursting with color, unique visual elements, and technological advancements inspired by the spirit of Lagos, which is physically divided into an island and a mainland separated by both water and socio-economic status. The coming-of-age story introduces Tola, a young heiress from the wealthy island, and her best friend Kole, a self-taught tech expert and loving son from the mainland. Filmmakers shared a first look of the new series.

Strange World
Lee then set the tone for Disney Animation’s next feature film, introducing the filmmakers behind Strange World. Director Don Hall and co-director screenwriter Qui Nguyen revealed their personal connections to the film about an incredible family who must get past their differences to save a strange world full of danger and surprises. The audience was treated to an all-new trailer from Disney Animation’s 61st feature film before voice cast members Jake Gyllenhaal (Searcher Clade), Dennis Quaid (Jaeger Clade), Jaboukie Young-White (Ethan Clade), and Lucy Liu (Callisto Mal) joined the festivities. Fans also got a glimpse at an action-packed sequence from the film and received an exclusive poster. Produced by Roy Conli, Strange World also features the voice of Gabrielle Union (Meridian). The film premieres in theaters November 23, 2022.

Wish
In the finale moment of the presentation, Lee returned to the stage to officially unveil Disney Animation’s next original feature film, Wish, set to release Fall 2023, during the Studio’s 100th year. A film that could only come from Walt Disney Animation Studios, the epic animated musical is inspired by the legacy of films from the studio and asks the question: “How did the wishing star, upon which so many characters wished, come to be?” Directors Chris Buck and Fawn Veerasunthorn outlined the story, which is set in Rosas, the kingdom of wishes where wishes can literally come true. Attendees were introduced to 17-year-old Asha—an optimist with a sharp wit who cares endlessly about her community. In a moment of desperation, Asha makes an impassioned plea to the stars, which is answered by a cosmic force, a little ball of boundless energy called Star. Together, they face the most formidable of foes to save her community and prove that when the will of one courageous human connects with the magic of the stars, wondrous things can happen.

Disney Animation good-luck-charm Alan Tudyk joined filmmakers on stage to share an animation test for his newest character, a goat named Valentino. Buck, Veerasunthorn, and Lee then introduced the voice of Asha, Academy Award® winner Ariana DeBose, who brought down the house singing an all-new original song written by Julia Michaels, who’s writing all of the songs for Wish. DeBose’s captivating performance of “More for Us” closed the showcase in signature Disney style. Lee is a writer on the film, Peter Del Vecho produces and Juan Pablo Reyes co-produces.

D23 Expo 2022 Kicks Off with Enchanting Disney Legends Awards Ceremony

By Courtney Potter

The Ultimate Disney Fan Event launched this morning with all the magic you’d expect, as fans filled the massive Hall D23 at D23 Expo 2022 in Anaheim, California, for the incredible Disney Legends Awards Ceremony—sharing in the excitement as 14 astonishing talents were honored for their significant contributions to the Disney legacy. The event also served as the launch for Disney 100 of Wonder, an extraordinary celebration 100 years in the making.

It was truly a Disney celebration of epic proportions—including incredible live performances; appearances from the Legends themselves; and a special surprise from a certain Family Madrigal…

The party (and it really was a party!) started with Disney on Broadway’s Michael James Scott, reprising his memorable role as Genie in Aladdin, hyping the crowd with his signature “Never Had a Friend Like Me”—which transitioned into an amazing mashup of “A Whole New World,” “Can You Feel the Love Tonight” from The Lion King, and “Let It Go” from Frozen—all featuring cast members from the respective Disney on Broadway productions.

Scott then welcome Bob Chapek, CEO, The Walt Disney Company, to the stage—who was as excited to be back at D23 Expo as the fans were: “I can’t tell you how thrilled I am to be here with this incredible community, the biggest Disney fans in the world,” he admitted. “So whether you traveled across town or across an ocean to be here, I want to thank you for joining us and for being such an important part of the Disney family… This is going to be our biggest, most over-the top D23 Expo ever: more content previews, more special guests, more news from the parks, and maybe even some more surprises.”

One of those surprises included a first look at Disney 100 Years of Wonder. “I can’t tell you what an honor it is to lead this company at such an exciting moment in its history,” said Chapek. “And that moment of course, is our yearlong celebration of Disney’s 100th anniversary. We’re going to be pulling out all the stops to honor a century of groundbreaking Disney storytelling, experiences, and magic—along with all the dreams they’ve inspired and the memories that they’ve created for countless families and fans.”

Throughout Disney 100 Years of Wonder, The Walt Disney Company will celebrate with new 100th anniversary content, experiences, and programming—including a brand-new traveling exhibition visiting locations around the world, Disney 100-themed park experiences, a new feature film from Walt Disney Animation Studios, and much more. “And it all gets started with a bang at the end of this year,” said Chapek, “during ABC’s Dick Clark’s New Year’s Rockin’ Eve with Ryan Seacrest.” And, coming January 1, Disney100.com will highlight the past, the present, and the future of Company—and chronicle the yearlong celebration.

Additionally, Chapek thrilled the crowd by making another big announcement: “For those of you that were here in 2019, you may recall that I shared the promise of what would become Avengers Campus right here at Disney California Adventure Park,” he said. “And I’m proud to say that this dynamic land is already a guest favorite, and it’s no surprise why. You can spin webs with Spider-Man, and see him soaring 85 feet in the air; enjoy the fun of an adventure with the Guardians of the Galaxy; and enjoy food big and small at Pym Test Kitchen. But we’re not done yet!”

He continued, “Today I’m excited to announce that the Avengers Campus at Disney California Adventure is going deeper into the multiverse to do that. We’re going to be expanding Avengers Campus! And the heart of this new area will be a sensational new attraction. Guests will be able to battle alongside Super Heroes and villains from anywhere.”

Following an equal parts totally epic and truly heartwarming video about Disney 100 Years of Wonder, Chapek then acknowledged several past Disney Legends in the audience before welcoming this year’s team of Disney Global Ambassadors to the stage.

Next, host Tamron Hall—wearing an adorable dress she proudly acknowledged featured some hidden Mickeys!—excitedly kicked off the Disney Legends award presentation. “I’m a big Disney fan, and it’s an honor to be here,” she admitted.

First up to accept the award was Ellen Pompeo, star of ABC’s long-running and ground-breaking medical drama Grey’s Anatomy, who talked about the magic of Disney storytelling through an adorable anecdote about her daughter Stella: “Last night, when I went into her room to tell her to shut down her computer and go to sleep, she was laughing the most fantastic, deep belly laugh. I said, ‘What’s so funny?’ And she said, ‘black-ish!’ I said, ‘What is it about black-ish that you love so much?’ And she said, ‘It’s so relatable, Mom.’ And that’s the power of storytelling. To be a storyteller, and to work for the best storytellers in the world is, is quite a magical thing… It’s an honor to tell these stories that bring us all together, and make us feel like we’re all connected—because that’s when we are truly our best selves: when we are thinking of one another.”

“I know what you’re all thinking,” said Rob’t Coltrin. “Who the heck is this guy?” As the crowd laughed, the longtime Walt Disney Imagineering creative director continued, “That’s understandable—because 70 years ago, when Walt assembled his first Imagineers, not only were they creating Disneyland, they were creating a whole new art form. And unlike movies and music and theater, there was no place for credits. For the most part, we’re kind of invisible—and that’s okay; we work behind the scenes, and we let our creations be the stars you come out to see… I’d like to dedicate this to all the Imagineers I had the privilege of working with for 29 years. We all worked around the clock, and around the globe, because we love bringing joy and happiness to millions of guests every year. So, to my great, big family of incredible, invisible, Imagineers, I say thank you. I’m the one standing up here—but in the true spirit of Imagineering, this one’s for all of us.”

Patrick Dempsey, Pompeo’s costar on Grey’s Anatomy and star of Disney’s Enchanted (as well as Disney+’s upcoming Disenchanted), recalled his first encounter with Disney—which, serendipitously, turned into his first job with Disney: “There used to be The Disney Sunday Movie on Sunday nights. I lived in a rural community in Maine, and we didn’t get the chance to get to the cinema too much. So, I was exposed to all the great movies on that evening. And then my first job here was a The Disney Sunday Movie called A Fighting Choice… I have had such success with this company; it’s been remarkable. To be a working actor is fortunate, and to have people see your work is even more fortunate. And to be able to use that for something that’s very positive—especially in the world we’re living in right now—you can see and you can feel, from these [Disney] images, what happens when we come together as a community… it’s the greatest reward.”

Incredibly, Doris Hardoon, a veteran Walt Disney Imagineering creative director who (among other projects) worked on many aspects of Shanghai Disney Resort, realized that “43 years ago, actually this same week in September, I met and had an interview with [Disney Legends] Marty Sklar, John Hench, and Rolly Crump. And I swear, I didn’t know who they were,” she added, chuckling. “I was actually just looking for some freelance work, but they apparently saw something in me, and hired me on the spot… I would’ve never guessed, growing up in Hong Kong, that I would be a part of the Disney family—let alone standing here, receiving this amazing Disney Legend award… [Imagineers] do the impossible, right? We have vision; we take risks; and we make a difference with blood, sweat, tears—and especially with love. We make dreams into reality, and guess who it’s all for? It’s for all of you, the fans. And we do this over and over again—and we’ll continue to do it over and over again.”

Anthony Anderson, star of ABC’s critically acclaimed series black-ish, grew up only 35 miles away from Disneyland and admitted that, thinking back, he realized Disney played a large part in why he decided to become an actor. “Looking at everything that you guys have been showing today,” he said, “[I realized] Disney has always been a part of my life, my upbringing, my rearing, my childhood, and it has informed me and allowed me to be the entertainer and the man that I am today. So, to stand here as a Legend is an honor. Disney has taught all of us to dream—and to dream big. And y’know, it’s been said that if your dreams don’t frighten you, you’re not dreaming big enough. Disney has inspired me, and I hope it continues to inspire us all to dream larger than life.” Anderson then thrilled the crowd by taking a selfie with Chapek and his Disney Legend award statue before leaving the stage.

“For me, a ‘legend’ is someone whose work makes more space for others to be more free, more safe, and hopefully for the world to be more just,” said Tracee Ellis Ross, Anderson’s black-ish costar, in accepting her award. “It feels legendary to have intentionally inhabited the self-hood of Rainbow Johnson—not just her motherhood, or her job-hood, and her wife-hood, but the fullness of a woman thriving with all of those parts. It feels legendary to have built, advocated for, and breathed life into a joyful Black woman for eight years on a great show. Let the space Bow leaves be an invitation for the creation of more Black women-centered stories that reflect the truth and diversity of who we are in the world.”

Before taking her own selfie with Chapek, Ross excitedly added, “I love being a part of Disney—and Space Mountain is still the ride! It’s still the one!”

Debbie Swenson, Robert Price “Bob” Foster’s daughter, accepted the Disney Legend award on his behalf. “It’s funny how, when it’s your own parent who does something extraordinary, you tend to not appreciate their accomplishments,” she said. “But through the process of this honor becoming a reality, I have come to see my father through the eyes of those who—in working with him—grew to admire and respect the person he was, and the invaluable contributions he made to The Walt Disney Company in the early 1960s. My father secretly negotiated the deals that laid the groundwork for what is today the most popular vacation resort in the world: Walt Disney World.”

She continued, “But a much smaller event established him as a hero in my eyes, long before he ever began traveling to Florida. In 1961, on my 6th birthday, my dad was brave enough to take me and five other little girls to Disneyland—all by himself. We were awestruck by how, with the flash of his card, we could skip to the front of the line of favorite attraction. The day was purely magical, and he gave me a birthday I would never forget… My dad is now a Disney Legend, but to that 6-year-old little girl, he always has been.”

“Walt Disney was really the first filmmaker who used songs as an integral part of his storytelling process,” said Chris Montan, the Disney music supervisor responsible for shepherding hits like Céline Dion and Peabo Bryson’s “Beauty and the Beast” from the iconic 1991 animated film. “So, when I got to Disney, I thought, ‘What’s our best possible and highest ambition?’ And for me it was: ‘Could we try to replicate those same great successes that Walt had in our era?’ With the help of the greatest songwriters of our generation—[Disney Legends] Howard Ashman, Alan Menken, Tim Rice, Elton John, and Phil Collins; Bobby and Kristen Anderson-Lopez; Lin-Manuel Miranda—I like to think that we got some of that same achievement that Walt was able to do… [During my Disney career,] I woke up each morning and I wanted to make a song that your uncle would like as much as your niece and your grandmother. We tried very hard to be universal with our melodies—and it was such a great experience.”

“How am I doing? I’m good! I’m a Disney Legend—what could be better?!” said Jonathan Groff, responding to an audience member as he excitedly took the stage to accept his award. “As a young gay boy growing up in the late ’80s/early ’90s in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, Disney VHS tapes were my primary source of escape and self-expression,” said the award-winning actor, known as the voice of Kristoff in Frozen. “I, as I’m sure many people in this room did, memorized scenes, songs, line readings, choreography; I dressed up as Peter Pan, I dressed up as Alice in Wonderland, as Cinderella—and one Halloween, when I was 3 years old, I dressed up as Mary Poppins, complete with lipstick and a carpet bag… I want to thank my mom for letting me dress up as whoever I wanted to dress up as, and for always fanning the flame of my creativity. She is my true, personal legend.”

He added, “I want to thank [Frozen directors] Chris Buck and Jennifer Lee: Thank you so much for changing all of our lives and for changing the world with Frozen. Thank you for inviting me to be a part of the Disney family, and thank you for creating a space where even young boys can put on their Anna and Elsa dresses and sing and express themselves and be the true Disney legends that they are.”

Kristen Bell, voice of Anna in the Frozen films (as well as the executive producer of the Disney+ series Encore!), began her speech by, well… apologizing. “I would like to say thank you to everyone at Disney for this award, and I would also like to say I’m sorry to every parent who has had to listen to Frozen: I feel you. I see you. I am you. I get it,” she added with a wink. “I think that all of the most special projects have some sort of pixie dust on them that you can just feel. And I would absolutely not be standing here without my pixie-dust-fielding collaborators: Jennifer and Peter [Del Vecho, Frozen producer] and Chris, and Bobby and Kristen. And Josh, Idina, and Jonathan—my hearts, my loves; we’re all so grateful when we get to see each other. You are all so inspiring; you are intimidatingly talented; and just a ‘10 outta 10’ to spend time with.”

She continued, “Disney taught me to dream big and follow your heart—and also that it is totally appropriate to burst out into song at any given moment, which I really appreciate.”

“It is such a huge honor and privilege to be here today to receive this incredible recognition,” said Josh Gad, the voice of Frozen’s unforgettable snowman Olaf and costar in 2017’s live-action Beauty and the Beast. “There’s nothing like having a reason to put on a suit when it’s 158 degrees outside. Behind closed doors, I have always referred to myself as the Angela Lansbury of my generation, and I thank you for finally making it official,” he continued, eliciting laughs from the fans in Hall D23.

On a more serious note, Gad admitted, “The reason I am even here is because once upon a time, I saw a movie called Aladdin and there was this little character named the Genie that inspired me to want to, one day, dare to dream of creating a character as memorable, funny, and beloved. I failed,” he added, bringing more laughs. “But to now, 30 years later, share this incredible honor with my idol and late friend [Disney Legend] Robin Williams is a gift my 10-year-old self never could have imagined.”

The last of the “Frozen Four,” Idina Menzel—the voice of Queen Elsa—recalled a special Disney-related memory from her youth: “When I was little, my grandpa Nat took me to those Sunday weekly Disney double features out in Jersey. And we saw everything: We saw Fantasia, we saw the original Cinderella; we saw Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs; we saw Lady and the Tramp, my favorite movie; we saw Pinocchio… I would run home, singing and acting out all the scenes with him; I’d hide behind the sofa, and he’d say, ‘Ladies and germs: Introducing the one and only Miss Idina Kim Menzel!’ And I’d pop up with my little hairbrush microphone, and I’d sing ‘When You Wish Upon a Star.’ It was Disney and Grandpa Nat who really sparked my love for music and storytelling, and my dream of performing and being on the stage and screen. So, to be here in front of all of you, as a Disney princess-turned-queen, I can’t believe it.”

Menzel ended her speech, much to the delight of the crowd, with a short impromptu rendition of that song that meant so much to her: “When You Wish Upon a Star” from Pinocchio.

Unfortunately, Don Hahn—iconic animator and Oscar®-winning producer of such hit films as Beauty and the Beast and The Lion King—couldn’t make today’s ceremony, so Hall accepted the award on his behalf.

In accepting the award on his brother Chadwick Boseman’s behalf, Derrick Boseman explained how much the honor meant to him and the entire Boseman family. “As I think about my brother and this [award] being bestowed upon him, first of all, I wish that he was here to receive it,” he said. “But as I think about him, I think about how he honored our parents, how he honored his family, how he honored even his friends. He honored them with his blood, his sweat, and his tears… Chadwick was an amazing person, and him being honored today is no surprise to me.”

To close out the show, Hall announced a very special surprise—a performance of “We Don’t Talk About Bruno” by the cast of Walt Disney Animation Studios’ Encanto!

Secrets Revealed for ABC’s Beauty and the Beast: A 30th Celebration

It may be a tale as old as time, but ABC’s upcoming two-hour Beauty and the Beast: A 30th Celebration will be presenting a diverse new cast of actors and artists, headlined by recording sensation H.E.R. as Belle. At a Friday panel at D23 Expo, it was announced that the Grammy® winner will be joined by Josh Groban as Beast, Joshua Henry as Gaston, and EGOT winner Rita Moreno as the musical special’s narrator.

“It’s such a great cast,” raved H.E.R. “I think about how much fun we’re going to have.”

Executive producer John Chu introduced the news-breaking panel remotely, followed by introductions of panelists that included H.E.R., executive producer Raj Kapoor, production designer Julio Himede, costume designer Marina Toybina, and choreographer Jamal Sims. Kapoor explained that the project has been three years in the making, with producers being granted unprecedented access to the Disney archives—including animators’ original maquettes and character sketches used to create the 1991 classic.

In explaining the concept for the special, Kapoor said TV audiences will first see the opening of the original animated feature, with unexpected sequences suddenly coming to life in live-action recreations.

A series of slides revealed first-look images of the breathtaking sets, which will feature background projections of character sketches from the animated film’s archives. One slide that inspired gasps from the enthusiastic fans showcased concept art for Belle’s arrival in Beast’s castle.

Additional slides revealed glimpses of the costume sketches for Lumiere and Cogsworth and an embodiment of the enchanted rose petals, which will come alive in a ballet sequence featuring both male and female dancers, Sims revealed.

In creating the costumes, Toybina said her goal was to blend “the world of reality, spellbound enchantment, and pure imagination.” She praised Chu for pushing her creatively—by rejecting all of the initial costume sketches she presented to him. That sent her back to researching actual 18th-century candelabras and clocks. The result for Lumiere was a costume that evokes “a melted character from head to toe,” Toybina said.

When she was a girl, H.E.R. remembered, her cousin had a Belle doll that H.E.R.’s aunt insisted be kept in its original packaging. They would only be able to admire it on display up on a shelf. But what H.E.R. most dreamed of having was Belle’s iconic bright yellow ballgown. “Mom, I want that dress!” she’d plead, never dreaming that one day she’d have a chance actually to play Belle. “I’m proud to be part of this celebration,” she said. “Now I know little girls who look like me know they can do it too! I’m proof that you’re beautiful the way you are. It’s important that the world gets to see a Black and Filipino princess.”

Kapoor added that producers had also just found their child actor to play Chip, and Alan Menken, composer (with the late lyricist Howard Ashman) of the 1991 classic’s beloved songs, “is still involved in this project.”

With rehearsals starting in just three weeks, H.E.R. said, “I can’t wait to sing and sound like a princess.” She even started warbling a tease of “Little town, it’s a quiet village...,” as the audience screamed with delight, wanting to hear more.

But that will have to wait until Thursday, December 15, when Beauty and the Beast: A 30th Celebrationpremieres on ABC before streaming the following day on Disney +.

Disney Legends Share Stories “in Conversation”

“When the hair stands up on my arms, I know I’ve got a hit.”

That was just one of many nuggets shared by newly inducted Disney Legend Chris Montan, who appeared “In Conversation” with fellow Disney Legend Doris Hardoon and moderator Tamron Hall Friday afternoon at D23 Expo 2022 presented by Visa®.

“The first time I heard ‘Let It Go,’ I knew,” Montan said, talking about one of the many memorable tunes he oversaw the creation of during his years as a creative executive as Walt Disney Music, including serving as president from 1999 until his retirement in 2017. Working with iconic songwriters and composers such as Disney Legends Howard Ashman, Alan Menken, Sir Tim Rice, and Phil Collins, as well as Jerry Goldsmith and countless others, “When you get their best stuff, you know it,” he said.

The goal with a pop star like Collins, he added, was to “make him as comfortable with Disney as he was making his own records.”

Montan and Hardoon, an accomplished Imagineer whose work spans almost every Disney Park in the world, agreed on what it takes to reach your dreams. “You can’t give up,” Hardoon said. “Passion is a huge part of it.”

“If you don’t feel the love [for what you do],” Montan added, “you should get out of the way.”

Hardoon was herself passionate about the collaborative spirit at Walt Disney Imagineering. “When you belong to a group of people that go through blood, sweat, and tears,” she said, “by the end of it, they are your family. It’s the trust, right? That’s the whole relationship.”

The creativity at Walt Disney Imagineering, she emphasized, is focused not on individual accomplishment but on listening to the audience for each particular park. “It’s nationwide—it’s global,” she said. “That’s when you start learning to listen to what’s being told to you.” Every audience is different, she noted, so Imagineers’ creativity is grounded in “respect for the culture and for yourself—and it’s a challenge.”

Zeroing in on the intersection between her two guests’ different realms, Hall asked Montan what his favorite Disney Parks theme music was. “Soarin’,” he answered, without hesitation, to spontaneous applause from the 800 people in the audience. The Soarin’ theme was composed by multiple Oscar® winner Goldsmith, and Montan recalled telling Disney executives, “Jerry’s going to be your script” for the attraction, pulling all the visual elements together with just his memorable melody.

Part of the magic of Disney music is its timelessness, Montan noted. “I never wanted the music to sound like 1991”—or any other year. “We had a pact with our audience,” he continued. “I wanted their grandkids to like ‘Let It Go’ as much as their daughter does now.”

For parents who are advising their children about how best to pursue their dreams, Hardoon said to tell them, “Absolutely you can. You have to be good at what you do, and you have to have confidence in yourself.” And, she continued, “Don’t worry about making mistakes—it’s part of your learning process.”

To which Montan added, “And you have to work incredibly hard.”

D23 Expo Teases Future, Reveals Past of Society of Explorers and Adventurers

Created just over two decades ago—but mythologically dating wa-a-ay back to the early 1500s—the weaving of the Society of Explorers and Adventures into the Disney Parks has created a lot of enthusiasm from Disney fans. Friday at D23 Expo, those fans got an inside glimpse at the past and possible future of the SEA from Walt Disney Imagineers—including Mark LaVine, head of Story Development; Charlie Watanabe, senior story editor; Juleen Woods, brand management; and Kiran Jeffery, vice president, Content and Partnership Planning—along with moderator Julie Kagawa, the best-selling author of two books that tie into SEA lore.

The hour-long discussion both celebrated the society’s mysterious origins and offered a few reveals of what may be to come.

The announcement that inspired the most enthusiasm from the packed Backlot Stage came from Jeffrey, who acknowledged that a yet-to-be-revealed SEA-related project is in the works for Disney+. Whether the mystery project relates to Kagawa’s two novels was left for fans to speculate about.

The first book in Kagawa’s fiction series, Shinji Takahashi and the Mark of the Coatl, was released on April 22, introducing the title character and his adventure partner, Lucy, who has ties to SEA nemesis Harrison Hightower III, the main character in the story at Tokyo DisneySea’s Tower of Terror.

The follow-up novel, Shinji Takahashi Into the Heart of the Storm, will be published April 18, 2023. After revealing a first look at the cover art, Kagawa indicated more was to be revealed about Oliver Ocean, a descendant of SEA member Mary Oceaneer, a presence aboard Disney Cruise Line’s Disney Magic and the Miss Adventure Falls raft attraction at Disney’s Typhoon Lagoon.

Watanabe was also keen to reveal a little backstory for SEA member Dr. Kon Chunosuke, a fixture from the Jungle Cruise attractions at Disneyland Park and the Magic Kingdom at Walt Disney World Resort—whom the panel acknowledged bore more than a passing resemblance to Watanabe. It was revealed that Chunosuke is an entomologist who developed his intense interests in insects as a boy—with more details yet to be revealed.

A timeline chronicling in detail all of the major characters and events in the SEA mythology was briefly flashed on screen, as the panel explained that the chart was used internally by Imagineers. To the certain disappointment of fans, there are no plans to release the timeline to the public.

A few fun nuggets came from fans during the Q&A portion of the panel. Turning the Q&A back on the guests, the panel quizzed the audience as to whom they’d like to see revealed among SEA’s ranks. Among the suggestions that inspired the greatest reactions: Indiana Jones, Jack Sparrow, and Flynn Rider.

A question from an audience member about whether the 2021 Jungle Cruise movie tied into SEA prompted the answer that the film’s timeline didn’t quite mesh with that of SEA. At the same time, the panel noted that props from the hit film have been placed on display at the Jungle Cruise attractions in Disney Parks. Also, in case you weren’t aware, Emily Blunt’s character, Lily Houghton, wears the jacket of Albert Falls, the founder of the Jungle Navigation Company, which (according to lore) established the Jungle Cruise in the years after Falls’ death.

The panel did confirm that the Imagineers were looking for ways to expand SEA’s presence in both Disneyland Paris—with Woods noting that Jules Verne would be the most obvious tie-in—and Disney’s Animal Kingdom Theme Park at Walt Disney World Resort. With so many theme park suggestions being tossed out by the audience, LaVine playfully floated the idea of an entire “SEA Land.” As cool as that sounds, for now we’ll have to make do with all the exciting things in store as SEA expands its presence within the established Disney Parks.

Members of the All-New Mickey Mouse Club Cast Reunite at D23 Expo

Disney fans were treated to a nostalgic look back at ’90s favorite The All-New Mickey Mouse Club during a D23 Expo Friday afternoon panel with several season regulars.

Moderated by Ashley Eckstein, an entrepreneur and actress best known for originating the role of Ahsoka Tano, panelists included Albert Jeunepierre Fields, Chase Hampton, David “DK” Kater, Deedee Mango Hall, Lindsey Alley, Marc Worden, Mylin Brooks Stoddard, and Tony Lucca, with a recorded segment provided by Rhona Bennett, who was on the show from Season 4 through Season 7 and is a current member of the R&B group En Vogue.

The panelists shared highlights from their time on the show during a lively conversation, supplemented with some epic throwback photos supplied by the Walt Disney Archives. Among the stories:

  • Marc Worden shared a childhood memory he shared with Disney Legend and OG member of the original Mickey Mouse Club Annette Funicello. “I was very lucky to once go to Annette’s house for her birthday, and my mother was able to come along and she was just in awe. She grew up idolizing Annette. The thing that really stuck with me was she had been given a pool table from Fats Domino. She said, ‘I haven’t played it, but here it is.’ Yup. That was an amazing day.”
  • Tony Lucca recalled seeing Season 6 cast members Britney Spears and Justin Timberlake perform together for the first time on the show. “We did this big, hourlong concert and they did a number together, ‘I Feel for You’ by Chaka Khan. Oh my God, I was just watching these two dynamos performing the song … Their choreography and their moves were just so accurate and good. I remember sitting there and thinking, I can’t wait to see where this goes.”
  • “It was just a lot of fun. And then, of course when Christina [Aguilera] comes along and we were like ‘whoa, who is this?’ Like, are you an alien? Where were you when?,” Lucca recalled with a laugh.

ABC’s Home Economics panel previews episode set in Disneyland Park

Today at D23 Expo 2022 presented by Visa®, the cast of ABC’s hit comedy series Home Economics debuted the Season 3 premiere, which is set at the Happiest Place on Earth.

Topher Grace (Tom), Karla Souza (Marina), Sasheer Zamata (Denise), Lidia Porto (Lupe), and Jimmy Tatro (Connor) dished on filming after hours at Disneyland Resort; jumping on rides in-between scenes; and their favorite memories at Disney Parks.

In “Mickey Ears, $19.99,” Connor opts to tell Tom important news at Disneyland Resort to soften the blow and disguises the plan with a family trip. However, when Tom finds out, the ensuing drama threatens Marina’s perfectly planned first visit to the parks.

“Tom and I went off on a attraction-riding montage, which was definitely the most fun I’ve ever had,” Tatro said. “We filmed some of the rides ourselves with a GoPro.”

Souza jumped in with a cough to alert the audience, remind Tatro that it was her camerawork capturing Grace and Tatro on Grizzly River Run at Disney California Adventure Park. “I’ll hand it to her, she really put the camera first and her life second as we were plummeting down the rapids,” Tatro then explained.

Zamata, who revealed that she’s a former Walt Disney World Resort performer, admitted the fireworks scenes were her favorite part to film. “We had to film the fireworks a couple nights in a row,” she said. “Before the show was the Main Street Electrical Parade, and I love that too. I love the Disney magic.”

No trip to Disney Parks is complete without munching on tasty treats, and as depicted in the episode, the Hayward family left no snack uneaten. “There were a lot of churros floating around that set—I couldn’t believe it,” Porto said.

For Grace, he relished filming in Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge and co-piloting the Millennium Falcon with his on-screen brother—mid-argument! “During the week, the whole cast went on rides together as friends,” he said. “Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance was incredible!”

The season premiere airs Wednesday, September 21, at 9:30 p.m. ET/PT on ABC. New episodes air weekly on Wednesdays, and are available for streaming the next day on Hulu.

Brie Larson and Elijah Allan-Blitz Share the Inspiration and Innovation Behind Remembering

Today at D23 Expo 2022 presented by Visa, Oscar® winner Brie Larson and Emmy®-winning director Elijah Allan-Blitz revealed the inspiration behind Remembering, their original eight-minute film created for Disney+ that harnesses the power of augmented reality (AR) to celebrate the World of Imagination.

The fantastical film, which debuted on Disney+ Day, September 8, centers on a writer, played by Larson, who loses an important idea when her phone rings. Personified by a golden light, the lost idea is found by the writer’s inner child, who takes viewers on an imaginative journey.

Aptly, the inspiration for the film came from the couple’s 6-year-old neighbor, Dusty Peak, who plays the inner child in the film.

“We wanted to be creative during the pandemic,” Allan-Blitz shared. “And we came up with this story with our neighbor, which is about the genesis of ideas. Where do those ideas go when they’re forgotten? What happens to them? And what does that world of imagination look like? And are our ideas from us? Or are they something that is out there, and we’re more like radios that can tune in and catch an idea?”

Partnering with StudioLAB, a program dedicated to storytelling via new technology at The Walt Disney Studios, the film has a first-of-its-kind companion Augmented Reality app that enables viewers to interact with the story by scanning a QR code with their mobile phones or tablet computers.

“It’s still so awe-inspiring to me what we were able to achieve with this—and that this is really just the beginning of what will potentially be the future, the bridge to this next generation of storytelling,” Larson said.

Announcements and More at 2022 Disney Legends Ceremony

Not only were 14 amazing talents celebrated at this morning’s incredible Disney Legends ceremony, which kicked off the D23 Expo proceedings in the massive Hall D23—but Bob Chapek, CEO, The Walt Disney Company, also made some exciting announcements to the enraptured crowd.

“For those of you that were here in 2019, you may recall that I shared the promise of what would become Avengers Campus right here at Disney California Adventure Park,” Chapek said.

Guests will be able to battle alongside Super Heroes and villains from anywhere.” More will be revealed about this new attraction during Sunday’s “A Boundless Future: Disney Parks, Experiences and Products” panel in Hall D23—so don’t miss it if you’re attending in person, or tune into our livestream!

But that’s not all: Chapek also revealed that starting in January 2023, D23 Gold Members who join or renew* will receive an exclusive replica of the amazing statue of Mickey Mouse, designed by Grammy Award®-winning artist James Fauntleroy, seen outside of the Anaheim Convention Center for D23 Expo. And everyone in the Hall D23 audience took home a special limited-edition pin depicting the statue!

Inside Look at Walt Disney Archives presents Step in Time at D23 Expo 2022

By Courtney Potter

It’s time to welcome fans ’n’ friends to D23 Expo 2022 presented by Visa®—and that means we finally get the chance to see the Walt Disney Archives’ brand-new exhibit! As part of the kick-off to Disney100, this chronological exhibition showcases the Archives historical assets like never before with immersive, themed environments from animated shorts, films, and film premieres, as well as TV productions and Disney Parks favorites—including Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, Mary Poppins, Tron, and Walt Disney World Resort’s Haunted Mansion.

“It’s really impossible to think of how we can tell 100 years of history and just a 15,000-square-foot space,” Becky Cline, director, the Walt Disney Archives, tells D23. “What we did is, we took a look at what memorable moments happened through those 100 years—and what we decided to do in this space was create a timeline, and then let you ‘step in time’; step into the most memorable moments from each decade... It’s a lot different than anything we’ve done before, for the Expo particularly; these are immersive vignettes. There’s a kind of a mixture of photo ops and an immersive experience, but there are also museum artifacts in here. There are original props and costumes and special pieces on display. So it’s a little bit of everything.”

On Thursday night, we were lucky enough to get a sneak peek at the fun... Take a gander at the photos below, which only scratch the surface of the amazing artifacts featured—and if you’re attending D23 Expo 2022, don’t miss seeing this incredible exhibit in person!

A Special Sneak Peek Inside D23 Expo Presented by Visa®

By Zach Johnson

The Ultimate Disney Fan Event is almost here!

Before D23 Expo presented by Visa® kicks off Friday, September 9, in Anaheim, California, the media got a sneak peek at not only the show floor, but some of the exciting things The Walt Disney Company has in store this weekend—and beyond!

The media preview began with remarks from Bob Chapek, Chief Executive Officer, The Walt Disney Company, and Michael Vargo, Vice President, D23: The Official Disney Fan Club, followed by a look at Mickey Mouse One: Walt’s Plane presented by Amazon, a specially curated exhibit in the Arena of the Anaheim Convention Center. D23 and the Walt Disney Archives, along with D23 Expo Platinum sponsor Amazon, have restored the plane’s exterior for guests to enjoy through Sunday, September 11. It will then travel west, where, starting Saturday, October 15, Walt Disney’s Grumman Gulfstream I plane will be displayed alongside the Palm Springs Air Museum collection.

“We are so happy to have Walt’s plane make a ‘landing’ at the Palm Springs Air Museum, just a few miles from where Walt and his family had vacation homes at Smoke Tree Ranch,” Rebecca Cline, Director, Walt Disney Archives, said of Walt’s plane, which will be on long-term loan to the museum. “It is the ideal setting for this incredible icon.”

After learning more about the history of the plane—affectionately known as “The Mouse”—the media preview moved to Hall B to experience the Disney General Entertainment “Journey Into Storytelling” pavilion, which includes immersive photo and video activations themed to Abbott Elementary, American Born Chinese, American Horror Story, Cruel Summer, Epic Adventures with Bertie Gregory, Fire of Love, Good Morning America, Grey’s Anatomy, The Kardashians, Legacy: The True Story of the LA Lakers, Limitless withChris Hemsworth, National Treasure: Edge of History, Only Murders in the Building, and ZOMBIES 3. “Our shows are distinguished by their popularity and their high quality,” said Dana Walden, Chairman, Disney General Entertainment Content, The Walt Disney Company. “As a matter of fact, they were just nominated for 117 Emmy® Awards. But really, what’s important is that fans love the shows—and we are going to take them on a ‘Journey into Storytelling’ in this pavilion.”

Next, in The Disney Bundle Pavilion in Hall B, Kareem Daniel, Chairman, Disney Media and Entertainment Distribution, The Walt Disney Company, celebrated the combined strength of the Disney+, ESPN+, and Hulu content libraries. “Over the next three days, this space is going to be filled with thousands of guests who will get to connect with their favorite characters, explore iconic worlds, and experience the exceptional storytelling that frankly has made The Walt Disney Company set the standard for nearly 100 years,” Daniel said. “This event is really a fantastic opportunity to showcase all that is new and upcoming for the Walt Disney Company. But, most importantly, it’s an opportunity to connect with the fans who are incredibly dedicated to the Company. They’re the ones who make all this possible, who are at the heart of everything we do.”

After being treated to a first look at the Disney+ Original series Andor, debuting with three episodes on Wednesday, September 21, members of the media were among the first to explore Walt Disney Archives presents Step in Time, an exhibit celebrating the nearly 100-year history of The Walt Disney Company. ”It’s a wonderful exhibition,” Cline told Vargo before cutting the ribbon. “It’s a little bit different than what we’ve done in the past.”

Finally, media reps were invited to step inside the Disney Parks and Experiences Wonderful World of Dreams pavilion, where D23 Expo attendees are invited to step into new stories, attractions, and adventures Walt Disney Imagineers are bringing to life around the world. Fans will discover behind-the-scenes glimpses of Tiana’s Bayou Adventure, the transformation of EPCOT, new Frozen-themed experiences, and so much more. “If you ask any Imagineer what drives them every day, they’ll start with the end result,” said Barbara Bouza, President, Walt Disney Imagineering. “It’s really about the emotions of our guests and how they feel every time they step into an attraction, into the resorts, a cruise, or in the community—or when they experience a nighttime spectacular, a live show or performance, or even one of our character moments. That drive to create experiences that connect in such meaningful ways? Well, that’s magic.”

Josh D’Amaro, Chairman, Disney Parks, Experiences and Products, promised the best is yet to come. “I can’t wait to tell you what’s next at Disney Parks, Experiences and Products and how we’re taking our stories, characters, and experiences to all new levels, thanks to some of the most creative teams—literally—in the world,” D’Amaro said. “I can promise you all: You are not going to be disappointed this weekend.”

After sharing some highlights from across Disney Parks, Experiences and Products, D’Amaro turned to what’s next. “As I approach my 25th year at Disney, I’ve never been more excited than I am right now about what the future holds for Disney,” he said. “I hope to see you Sunday morning in Hall D23. It’s going to be a lot of fun. I’ll close with this: The depth and breadth of Disney and our consumer touchpoints is truly unrivaled. We know from decades of bringing Disney magic to life in so many ways that the closer we are to our audience, the better their experience and the stronger their connection will be with us. Only Disney can do this. It holds this special part in all of our hearts.”

D23 Expo is sold out. Select presentations will be streamed for guests at D23 Expo [LIVE]. For more information, visit D23Expo.com.
