D23 Fab Five: Bruno Tonioli’s Favorite Disney Movies

By Ingrid Meilan

Dancing with the Stars judge Bruno Tonioli’s introduction to Disney was from the man himself. “When I was growing up in Italy,” he says, “We didn’t get a TV until the mid-1960s, and there was only one channel.” But that one channel, he says, played the most magical program of all. “We used to look forward to watching The Wonderful World of Disney with Mr. Walt Disney himself introducing the programs!” Tonioli tells D23.

Looking back, the choreographer says he credits Mr. Disney for introducing him to the art of filmmaking. “I have love and affection for [Walt Disney] opening the wonderful world of fantasy and beauty and art to us. Walt was a genius. He was such a great influence to people around the world as a pioneer in this industry.”

Even today as an adult, Tonioli says he’ll always gravitate toward a Disney film. “Disney films have universal appeal,” he tells D23. “The stories they tell have no boundaries. The legacy has been kept alive all these years because Disney does such a great job upholding the standard. The films stay with you forever—because they’re such quality, you never forget them.”

Bruno Tonioli shared his favorite Disney movies with D23.

Bambi

1. Bambi
“Purely from a sentimental perspective, there is one film I’ll never forget and that’s Bambi. It is one of the most moving films ever made. I went with my mother and afterward it was almost embarrassing—people were staring because I was crying so hard! My poor mother didn’t know what to do. Even as a child I was very emotional and I didn’t hold back.”

Fantasia

2. Fantasia
“Only Disney could put out a film like Fantasia. Imagine, people sitting in the cinema, watching a film with no dialogue, just classical music. Fantasia opened people’s minds to classical music—it’s often considered elitist and this film made the music accessible because of the imagery that went along with it. Creatively and artistically, I just think it’s an unbelievable film. You see something new every time you watch it. I would love if a new installment of Fantasia came out in 3-D with all of today’s technology!”

Mary Poppins

3. Mary Poppins
“I’m a film lover, and when Mary Poppins came out, nothing like that had ever been seen before. The interplay between live-action and animation was never done so well. What a dazzling achievement. I remember seeing in Italy, dubbed in Italian! When she jumped in the sidewalk painting in the park, it blew my mind.”

WALL-E

4. WALL•E
“I loved WALL•E. Disney isn’t afraid to take risks. The first half of the film has no dialogue. I love that the animators had such conviction in their idea that they knew that the film would work without characters speaking. You get to see the heart and soul of WALL•E just by the way he’s animated. It’s mesmerizing! The emotions stirred by this tiny little robot are just huge.”

The Lion King

 5. The Lion King
“I know it must be on everyone’s list, but I have to mention The Lion King! As a film and as a theater show, it really is the very best of the best. The combination of drama and music and characterization, plus the realization of the story—it really is a masterpiece.”

Become a Science Hero with Marvel Comics’ Unstoppable Wasp and the Agents of G.I.R.L.

By Jocelyn Buhlman

When little girls are, well, little, they engage in pretend play and act out aspirations based on their heroes—fighting bad guys as Mulan, controlling the snow as Elsa, or making a splash as Ariel. With the release of Marvel Comics’ new series, The Unstoppable Wasp, don’t be surprised to see a make-believe princess pour some tea to her royal friends and also share a cup with some new faces: aspiring scientists, Super Heroes, and engineers.

The Unstoppable Wasp creator Jeremy Whitely explains, “I have a 5-year-old daughter who loves science. She has an undaunted curiosity and a love of puzzles. I don’t want to see my daughter lose that curiosity. She has worlds to discover out there, and if seeing girls like herself doing that helps to drive her, then I’ll be thrilled to have devoted my time and energy to making that a possibility for them.”

Unstoppable Wasp and the Agents of G.I.R.L.

Jeremy’s new series, The Unstoppable Wasp, is a comic about Nadia, the daughter of the original Ant-Man, Hank Pym. The series follows her as she assembles a lab of girl geniuses—named G.I.R.L.: Genius In action Research Labs—to change the world. The book’s cast is a diverse group of young women from different backgrounds. Through this new series, Jeremy is hoping to encourage girls in their love of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) fields.

Nadia and the Agents of G.I.R.L. are creating role models for our future scientists, and Jeremy couldn’t be happier. “If you’ve never seen a woman in a heroic context, you’re bound to have a slanted view of the world,” he tells D23. “I think girls need to see characters like themselves doing science and saving the day, and I think boys need to know that girls can be heroes and scientists as well.”

Unstoppable Wasp and the Agents of G.I.R.L.

The Unstoppable Wasp addresses this issue directly, Jeremy notes, in the first issue, in which Nadia meets Mockingbird, one of the first major female scientists in Marvel history, who informs Nadia about “the list” of the smartest people in the world. “Lunella Lafayette (Moon Girl) was recently revealed to be the smartest person in the Marvel Universe. But after that, the list is overwhelmingly male,” Jeremy explains. “Nadia decides that there must be dozens of girl geniuses out there who have been overlooked, and she sets off to find them and start her own lab of girl geniuses with the goal of changing the world.”

This quest for girl geniuses happens on the page and in real life. As part of the “Agents of G.I.R.L.” initiative, readers are encouraged to send in profiles of themselves or other women they know in the STEM fields. Jeremy stresses, “I wanted to tie these brilliant women doing super science in the Marvel Universe to real women doing real science and really changing our world.” Jeremy, along with artist Elsa Charretier and editors Alanna Smith and Tom Brevoort, decided to make a change to the comic book format. Instead of having a section for letters to the editor at the end of each book, the comics would instead feature an “Agents of G.I.R.L.” section that features profiles of some of the true-life women in STEM, to provide real-world heroes for the readers. “This program has allowed us to interview everyone from astrophysicists, to aeronautical engineers, to plasma scientists, to paleontologists,” he says. “They get to talk a bit about what they study, share their love of comics and pop culture, and, maybe most important, provide their Twitter handles so that readers who are interested in what these scientists are doing can follow them, talk to them and maybe even find out how to be the next generation.”

Unstoppable Wasp and the Agents of G.I.R.L.

The Unstoppable Wasp harks back to the golden age of comics, when fans could read the adventures of scientist Super Heroes like The Fantastic Four and Hank Pym. Jeremy wants to bring back these science-focused role models. “As comics have gotten older, we’ve tilted more toward a combination of vigilantes, soldiers and mutants of one type or another,” he explains. “This change just happens to correspond with the increase of representation for female heroes in comics, with the result that there aren’t very many female super scientists.”

Unstoppable Wasp and the Agents of G.I.R.L.

Readers can find a wide variety of heroes to inspire them, whether they’re following Nadia’s adventures on the page or looking up the women featured in the Agents of G.I.R.L. profiles, such as Jin, a professor of chemical and biomolecular engineering; Raychelle, a chemistry professor focusing on forensics; Marina, a PhD student studying analytical chemistry; Rachel, a paleontologist specializing in elephant fossils; Sadie, a fiber-optics engineer; and Nia, an aerospace engineer working on spacecraft autonomy.

Fans’ response to these profiles was overwhelming, Jeremy says. “People were ecstatic to see themselves, and their role models, profiled in the comics. We actually have a backlog of tons of female scientists to profile right now.”

Unstoppable Wasp and the Agents of G.I.R.L.

To Jeremy, The Unstoppable Wasp and “Agents of G.I.R.L.” represent an essential element of Marvel Comics: seeing ourselves in our heroes. “Spider-Man is an average nerdy kid from Queens. Ms. Marvel is a hyperactive Pakistani-American fangirl from Jersey City. Luke Cage is an average guy from Harlem who was unfairly convicted of a crime he didn’t commit. Part of the reason they mean so much to us, is that they are us. If they can do it, so can we, right?”

So the next time you’re watching your little Mulans, Elsas, and Ariels playing together (along with all of the little Princess Leias, Reys, Gamoras and Black Widows…), don’t be surprised if they’re getting some help from a new set of heroes: the future scientists of America. And they might be wearing Wasp wings, thanks to Nadia and the Agents of G.I.R.L.

Of Nadia, Jeremy says, “She represents a feeling of hope that I think people are longing to see in modern heroes.” And we can’t wait to see what those heroes will do next.

Why Magic Kingdom’s New Fireworks Show is Truly Spectacular

By Nicole Nalty

In our opinion, watching a fireworks spectacular is the best way to top off a perfect Disney day. According to Disney Legend Richard Sherman, Walt thought a sparkling fireworks show was the perfect “kiss goodnight” for guests enjoying a day at Disneyland (Richard even penned a song about it!). Guests visiting Disney’s Florida-based fantasy land are in for a treat with the debut of Happily Ever After, a brand-new fireworks spectacular––created just for guests of Magic Kingdom park––full of unbelievable projection-mapping technology, an emotional score, and, of course, fantastic fireworks.

The nighttime spectacular, debuting this Friday, May 12, at Magic Kingdom, celebrates some of Disney’s greatest adventures, with moments from Moana, Brave, Big Hero 6, Zootopia, The Princess and the Frog, and Aladdin among the many Disney favorites showcased throughout the show. While the stories told in Happily Ever After will be familiar to Disney fans, you’ll find amazing new animation from the folks (read: creative geniuses) at Walt Disney Animation Studios for sequences exclusive to the new show. “It’s just fun to play with these characters in a completely different context than the original film,” Eric Goldberg, original animator of Aladdin’s Genie and many more beloved characters, told the Disney Parks Blog.

Cinderella Castle enchants during the Once Upon a Time projection show, thanks to projection-mapping technology.

Melding together classic storytelling and the latest and greatest technologies is what Disney does best––in Happily Ever After, hand-drawn animation joins forces with the latest projection-mapping technology, a tool that the park has utilized since the debut of The Magic, The Memories & You in 2010. Cinderella Castle becomes a blank canvas for these magic makers––as art director Ryan Kravetz noted, “It’s not paper, it’s not a cel. The physical structure of this castle as our starting point is a really powerful medium to be using.”

The soundtracks that accompany Disney fireworks are memorable and moving, and the new music created for Magic Kingdom’s new show is no exception. Contemporary versions of popular Disney songs and an all-new score, recorded across the pond at London’s Air Studios, will weave together the many Disney adventures you’ll experience during the show, and a new song created just for the show—appropriately titled “Happily Ever After”—will inspire guests to dream big and never give up. The song comes to life through the voices of country music artist Angie Keilhauer and singer Jordan Fisher, who most recently took on Maui’s “You’re Welcome,” alongside Lin-Manuel Miranda, on the Moana soundtrack. (Get a sneak peek of the song here).

Most importantly, Happily Ever After has heart. As Disney Legend Mark Henn put it, “I think that these characters, the stories, and the journeys that they’ve all gone through that we see in the show will remind people that happily ever after still can exist, we can still have our hopes and dreams and still hope for that ‘happily ever after.’”

Zombies Take Over Disney Channel

By D23 Team

Production has begun on the next Disney Channel Original Movie, Zombies. Set to premiere in 2018, the story centers on a groundbreaking semester at Seabrook High School, the pride and joy of the town of Seabrook, which is rooted in traditional suburban life, thrives on uniformity, and loves a good pep rally! When transfer students from Zombietown transfer to Seabrook High, chaos ensues, particularly when a cheerleader, Addison, and a zombie football star, Zed, fall in love. Expect awesome music, amazing dancing, and a story about the undead that’s filled with life and heart.

Zombies is directed by Jeffrey Hornaday, choreographed by both Christopher Scott and Jeffrey Hornaday (whose moves you know from Teen Beach Movie), and executive produced by Effie Brown and Jeffrey Hornaday. Adam Bonnett, executive vice president, Original Programming, Disney Channels Worldwide, said, “We’re thrilled to be working with Jeffrey Hornaday again to bring this new world of zombies and cheerleading to life. Jeffrey and Chris Scott have delivered some of our most memorable musical sequences on Disney Channel; and now with Effie Brown on board as an executive producer, we are excited to deliver this inspirational story about tolerance, inclusion, individuality, and conviction—each relatable themes for our viewers.”

The film stars American Housewife’s Meg Donnelly (above left) as Addison and Milo Manheim (above right) as Zed, Trevor Tordjman (below left) as Addison’s cousin, Jump In’s Kylee Russell (below center) returns to the DCOM family as Zed’s zombie best friend, and Carla Jeffery (below right) joins as Addison’s friend Bree.
