  • Acquisition complements and enhances The Walt Disney Company’s ability to provide consumers around the world with more appealing content and entertainment options
  • Transaction to include 21st Century Fox’s film and television studios, cable entertainment networks and international TV businesses
  • Popular entertainment properties including X-Men, Avatar, The Simpsons, FX Networks and National Geographic to join Disney’s portfolio
  • Expands Disney’s direct-to-consumer offerings with addition of 21st Century Fox’s entertainment content, capabilities in the Americas, Europe and Asia; Hulu stake becomes a controlling interest
  • Addition of extensive international properties, including Star in India and Fox’s 39% ownership of Sky across Europe, enhances Disney’s position as a truly global entertainment company with world-class offerings in key regions
  • Robert A. Iger to remain Chairman and CEO of The Walt Disney Company through 2021

The Walt Disney Company and Twenty-First Century Fox, Inc. (21st Century Fox) today announced that they have entered into a definitive agreement for Disney to acquire 21st Century Fox, including the Twentieth Century Fox Film and Television studios, along with cable and international TV businesses, for approximately $52.4 billion in stock (subject to adjustment). Building on Disney’s commitment to deliver the highest quality branded entertainment, the acquisition of these complementary assets would allow Disney to create more appealing content, build more direct relationships with consumers around the world and deliver a more compelling entertainment experience to consumers wherever and however they choose. Immediately prior to the acquisition, 21st Century Fox will separate the Fox Broadcasting network and stations, Fox News Channel, Fox Business Network, FS1, FS2 and Big Ten Network into a newly listed company that will be spun off to its shareholders.

Under the terms of the agreement, shareholders of 21st Century Fox will receive 0.2745 Disney shares for each 21st Century Fox share they hold (subject to adjustment for certain tax liabilities as described below). The exchange ratio was set based on a 30-day volume weighted average price of Disney stock. Disney will also assume approximately $13.7 billion of net debt of 21st Century Fox. The acquisition price implies a total equity value of approximately $52.4 billion and a total transaction value of approximately $66.1 billion (in each case based on the stated exchange ratio assuming no adjustment) for the business to be acquired by Disney, which includes consolidated assets along with a number of equity investments.

Popular Entertainment Properties to Join Disney Family

Combining with Disney are 21st Century Fox’s critically acclaimed film production businesses, including Twentieth Century Fox, Fox Searchlight Pictures and Fox 2000, which together offer diverse and compelling storytelling businesses and are the homes of Avatar, X-Men, Fantastic Four and Deadpool, as well as The Grand Budapest Hotel, Hidden Figures, Gone Girl, The Shape of Water and The Martian—and its storied television creative units, Twentieth Century Fox Television, FX Productions and Fox21, which have brought The Americans, This Is Us, Modern Family, The Simpsons and so many more hit TV series to viewers across the globe. Disney will also acquire FX Networks, National Geographic Partners, Fox Sports Regional Networks, Fox Networks Group International, Star India and Fox’s interests in Hulu, Sky plc, Tata Sky and Endemol Shine Group.

“The acquisition of this stellar collection of businesses from 21st Century Fox reflects the increasing consumer demand for a rich diversity of entertainment experiences that are more compelling, accessible and convenient than ever before,” said Robert A. Iger, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, The Walt Disney Company. “We’re honored and grateful that Rupert Murdoch has entrusted us with the future of businesses he spent a lifetime building, and we’re excited about this extraordinary opportunity to significantly increase our portfolio of well-loved franchises and branded content to greatly enhance our growing direct-to-consumer offerings. The deal will also substantially expand our international reach, allowing us to offer world-class storytelling and innovative distribution platforms to more consumers in key markets around the world.”

“We are extremely proud of all that we have built at 21st Century Fox, and I firmly believe that this combination with Disney will unlock even more value for shareholders as the new Disney continues to set the pace in what is an exciting and dynamic industry,” said Rupert Murdoch, Executive Chairman of 21st Century Fox. “Furthermore, I’m convinced that this combination, under Bob Iger’s leadership, will be one of the greatest companies in the world. I’m grateful and encouraged that Bob has agreed to stay on, and is committed to succeeding with a combined team that is second to none.”

At the request of both 21st Century Fox and the Disney Board of Directors, Mr. Iger has agreed to continue as Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of The Walt Disney Company through the end of calendar year 2021.

“When considering this strategic acquisition, it was important to the Board that Bob remain as Chairman and CEO through 2021 to provide the vision and proven leadership required to successfully complete and integrate such a massive, complex undertaking,” said Orin C. Smith, Lead Independent Director of the Disney Board. “We share the belief of our counterparts at 21st Century Fox that extending his tenure is in the best interests of our company and our shareholders, and will be critical to Disney’s ability to effectively drive long-term value from this extraordinary acquisition.”

Benefits to Consumers

The acquisition will enable Disney to accelerate its use of innovative technologies, including its BAMTECH platform, to create more ways for its storytellers to entertain and connect directly with audiences while providing more choices for how they consume content. The complementary offerings of each company enhance Disney’s development of films, television programming and related products to provide consumers with a more enjoyable and immersive entertainment experience.

Bringing on board 21st Century Fox’s entertainment content and capabilities, along with its broad international footprint and a world-class team of managers and storytellers, will allow Disney to further its efforts to provide a more compelling entertainment experience through its direct-to-consumer (DTC) offerings. This transaction will enable Disney’s recently announced Disney and ESPN-branded DTC offerings, as well as Hulu, to create more appealing and engaging experiences, delivering content, entertainment and sports to consumers around the world wherever and however they want to enjoy it.

The agreement also provides Disney with the opportunity to reunite the X-Men, Fantastic Four and Deadpool with the Marvel family under one roof and create richer, more complex worlds of inter-related characters and stories that audiences have shown they love. The addition of Avatar to its family of films also promises expanded opportunities for consumers to watch and experience storytelling within these extraordinary fantasy worlds. Already, guests at Disney’s Animal Kingdom Park at Walt Disney World Resort can experience the magic of Pandora—The World of Avatar, a new land inspired by the Fox film franchise that opened earlier this year. And through the incredible storytelling of National Geographic—whose mission is to explore and protect our planet and inspire new generations through education initiatives and resources—Disney will be able to offer more ways than ever before to bring kids and families the world and all that is in it.

Flight of Passage

Enhancing Disney’s Worldwide Offerings

Adding 21st Century Fox’s premier international properties enhances Disney’s position as a truly global entertainment company with authentic local production and consumer services across high-growth regions, including a richer array of local, national and global sporting events that ESPN can make available to fans around the world. The transaction boosts Disney’s international revenue mix and exposure.

Disney’s international reach would greatly expand through the addition of Sky, which serves nearly 23 million households in the UK, Ireland, Germany, Austria and Italy; Fox Networks International, with more than 350 channels in 170 countries; and Star India, which operates 69 channels reaching 720 million viewers a month across India and more than 100 other countries.

Prior to the close of the transaction, it is anticipated that 21st Century Fox will seek to complete its planned acquisition of the 61% of Sky it doesn’t already own. Sky is one of Europe’s most successful pay television and creative enterprises with innovative and high-quality direct-to-consumer platforms, resonant brands and a strong and respected leadership team. 21st Century Fox remains fully committed to completing the current Sky offer and anticipates that, subject to the necessary regulatory consents, the transaction will close by June 30, 2018. Assuming 21st Century Fox completes its acquisition of Sky prior to closing of the transaction, The Walt Disney Company would assume full ownership of Sky, including the assumption of its outstanding debt, upon closing.

Transaction Highlights

The acquisition is expected to yield at least $2 billion in cost savings from efficiencies realized through the combination of businesses, and to be accretive to earnings before the impact of purchase accounting for the second fiscal year after the close of the transaction.

Terms of the transaction call for Disney to issue approximately 515 million new shares to 21st Century Fox shareholders, representing approximately a 25% stake in Disney on a pro forma basis. The per share consideration is subject to adjustment for certain tax liabilities arising from the spinoff and other transactions related to the acquisition. The initial exchange ratio of 0.2745 Disney shares for each 21st Century Fox share was set based on an estimate of such tax liabilities to be covered by an $8.5 billion cash dividend to 21st Century Fox from the company to be spun off. The exchange ratio will be adjusted immediately prior to closing of the acquisition based on an updated estimate of such tax liabilities. Such adjustment could increase or decrease the exchange ratio, depending upon whether the final estimate is lower or higher, respectively, than the initial estimate. However, if the final estimate of the tax liabilities is lower than the initial estimate, the first $2 billion of that adjustment will instead be made by net reduction in the amount of the cash dividend to 21st Century Fox from the company to be spun off. The amount of such tax liabilities will depend upon several factors, including tax rates in effect at the time of closing as well as the value of the company to be spun off.

The Boards of Directors of Disney and 21st Century Fox have approved the transaction, which is subject to shareholder approval by 21st Century Fox and Disney shareholders, clearance under the Hart-Scott-Rodino Antitrust Improvements Act, a number of other non-United States merger and other regulatory reviews, and other customary closing conditions.

Everything You Need to Know Before You See Star Wars: The Last Jedi

By Jim Frye

As the world prepares to climb back into the cockpit of the Millennium Falcon and hyperdrive across the galaxy in Star Wars: The Last Jedi, which opens this Friday, December 15, D23 catches you up on everything you need to know before you see the film.

The Journey So Far
A long time ago (in 1977’s Star Wars: A New Hope, to be exact) in a galaxy far, far away, a ragtag team of rebels, led by Luke Skywalker, Princess Leia, and Han Solo, overthrew the evil galactic Empire and restored peace to the galaxy. Thirty years later (in 2015’s Star Wars: The Force Awakens), Supreme Leader Snoke and his oppressive First Order rise up from the ashes of the Empire and use their Starkiller Base to destroy much of the New Republic. Standing against this new menace is the Resistance, led by General Leia Organa, aided by our new heroes—Rey, Finn, and Poe—along with a familiar face: Han Solo. Together, they face off against the dark warrior Kylo Ren on their quest to find Luke Skywalker, the last of the Jedi—their only hope.

New Heroes

Star Wars: The Last Jedi

Rey
Rey, the central character of The Force Awakens, is a scavenger, a survivor toughened by life on the harsh desert planet of Jakku. When the droid BB-8 shows up and needs help, Rey finds herself drawn into a galaxy-spanning conflict and learns that her life is being shaped by the mysterious power of the Force. She soon faces off against the dreaded Kylo Ren before flying off in the Millennium Falcon to find the elusive and legendary Luke Skywalker.

Star Wars: The Last Jedi

Poe
Poe Dameron is a commander in the Resistance’s Starfighter Corps and one of Leia Organa’s most-trusted operatives. While on a mission to deliver important intel to the Resistance, he is captured by Kylo Ren, but later escapes and leads the attack on the First Order’s Starkiller Base.

Star Wars: The Last Jedi

Finn
The stormtrooper FN-2187 was trained to serve the First Order, but his conscience drove him to help Resistance pilot Poe Dameron escape, after which Poe gave him the nickname “Finn.” He teamed up with Rey, the droid BB-8, and Han Solo on their quest to help the Resistance by finding Luke Skywalker.

Old Friends

Star Wars: The Last Jedi

Leia
Ranked among the galaxy’s greatest heroes because of her leadership in ending the tyranny of the Empire, Leia Organa has grown from princess to general of the Resistance, leading the fight against the First Order. Having suffered incredible personal loss, she is still determined to find her brother, Luke Skywalker, in the hope that he can help to finally bring peace to the galaxy.

Star Wars: The Last Jedi

Luke
Tatooine farmboy Luke Skywalker rose from humble beginnings to become one of the greatest Jedi the galaxy has ever known. Along with his friends Han and Leia, he helped end the Empire and the terror of the Sith. A generation later, he is being called upon to again defend the galaxy from a new evil.

New Threats

Star Wars: The Last Jedi

Kylo Ren
A dark warrior strong with the Force, Kylo Ren reveres the history of Darth Vader and resists the influence of his parents, Han and Leia. As a leader of the First Order and a student of Supreme Leader Snoke, Kylo seeks to destroy the New Republic, the Resistance, and the legacy of the Jedi.

Supreme Leader Snoke
The mysterious dark figure Supreme Leader Snoke looms large and menacing, commanding the forces of the First Order, while also training Kylo Ren in the ways of the Force.

Inside the Walt Disney Archives’ Holiday Exhibit

By Rick Lorentz, Archivist, Walt Disney Archives

On December 8, 2017, the Walt Disney Archives presented Holiday Memories from The Walt Disney Archives—their first winter holiday exhibit on The Walt Disney Studios lot in more than 10 years. Cast members had the opportunity to view 150-plus holiday-themed historical objects from the Archives collection that were displayed inside the historic Hyperion Bungalow. Two days later, on December 10, D23 members were treated to festive food and craft offerings around the lot, holiday entertainment (including a screening of Have Yourself a Goofy Little Christmas), and the chance to visit the exhibit.

Through a careful selection of holiday objects, the Archives shared memories that included original art, props and costumes from The Walt Disney Studios, Walt Disney Parks and Resorts, and well-known Disney films.

Holiday cards

Beginning in the late 1930’s, artists at The Walt Disney Studios created one-of-a-kind artwork for the annual studio holiday card that would be sent to employees, business partners, and friends of Walt Disney. Several pieces of original art were restored and framed for presentation in the Holiday Memories exhibit. The art often reflected the latest film release from the Studio, or looked forward to banner releases for the coming year. Included in the exhibit were works representing Bambi (1942) and Mary Poppins (1964). Mickey Mouse even had the honor of representing 1948! The holiday art from that year depicts Mickey in his pajamas and nightcap carrying a lighted candle. The glow of the candle projects a bright snowflake image and is accompanied by the holiday sentiment, “Seasons Greetings.” Each year, the interior of the card contained more original art plus a monthly calendar for the upcoming year.

Fred MacMurray

The month of December was always a special time for Walt Disney. Along with the holidays, there were several Disney family member birthdays to celebrate during the last month of the year.  Walt’s staff kept meticulous records of the many gifts that Walt and Lillian would send, not only to immediate family but also to an extended family of performers, directors, and studio cast members. The Walt Disney Archives was pleased to present a couple of the card and gift lists that were once kept in Walt’s private business office. In the exhibit, an index card labeled “Fred MacMurray” lists the gifts that were sent to Katherine and Laurie, Fred’s daughters, over the course of several years.

Walt Disney World

It is during the holiday seasons when Walt Disney Parks and Resorts really sparkle, and helping to make special holiday memories are the festive parades and classic seasonal merchandise. The reindeer character costume from Magic Kingdom Park at Walt Disney World stands at a towering height of 8-feet, 6-inches. Parade dancers also marched while carefully maneuvering a 5-foot-wide snowflake as part of their holiday costume.

Country Bear Christmas

Country Bear Christmas Special was a seasonal treat at Disneyland Park from 1984–2000. In the show, Liver Lips McGrowl played a custom electric guitar designed to resemble a Christmas tree and a penguin, shivering inside a ice cube, was enlisted to assist Terrance in his frosty rendition of “Blue Christmas.” Imagine the excitement of Archives staff when it was discovered that the attraction’s penguins were still in working order and ready for the show to go on!

Christmas Carol

Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol has been interpreted by Disney in three major films—Mickey’s Christmas Carol (1983), The Muppet Christmas Carol (1992), and Disney’s A Christmas Carol (2009). We selected a variety of development art, models, and miniatures from the Archives collection that were used in the production of the three films.

A special holiday treat was the chance to see the hat, scarf and shoes worn by the Great Gonzo in The Muppet Christmas Carol.  Thank you to our friends at The Muppet Studios for loaning the priceless costume pieces!

Babes in Toyland

Another favorite holiday film, Babes in Toyland (1961), featured beautifully detailed costumes designed by Bill Thomas. The red cape with white fur trim was worn by Annette Funicello as Mary Contrary while a white suit with red silk underlining was worn by Tommy Sands as Tom Piper.

The Santa Clause

Tim Allen portrayed Santa Claus in three movies, The Santa Clause (1994), The Santa Clause 2 (2002), and The Santa Clause 3: The Escape Clause (2006). On display in the exhibit was a large variety of props used in the film, as well as several costumes, including one of the smallest costumes in the Archives collection, Judy the Elf.

At the close of the exhibit, more than 2,000 Disney cast members and D23 members had visited the Hyperion Bungalow—and hopefully created a few holiday memories of their own to cherish for years to come!

Disney On Broadway Brings Star Power to Epcot Festival of the Arts

Epcot at Walt Disney World Resort is already an incredible place to visit (don’t get us started on the amazing fish and chips at the Rose & Crown Pub in the United Kingdom pavilion)—but they somehow go about making it even cooler by offering several fabulous festivals throughout the year. Example: the Epcot International Festival of the Arts, running from January 12 to February 18! After last year’s inaugural—not to mention successful—outing, the Fest returns to celebrate all things art… performing, visual, and even culinary.

And this just in: As part of their “12 Days of Disney Parks Christmas,” our pals at the Disney Parks Blog recently made a big Fest-related announcement… Disney On Broadway performances will once again thrill visitors each weekend (Friday through Monday) during the 2018 event!

Broadway stars Ashley Brown (Mary Poppins), Josh Strickland (Tarzan), Kissy Simmons (The Lion King), Kevin Massey (Tarzan), and Alton Fitzgerald White (The Lion King) are all returning—and they’ll be joined for the first time this year by Kara Lindsay, known for her role as Katherine Plumber in Newsies. To find out more about the Disney On Broadway performance schedule during the Festival of the Arts, or about the Fest itself, visit disneyworld.com/ArtfulEpcot.

The Lion King Releases First Dual-Language Music Video

Speaking of Disney On Broadway, Disney’s The Lion King has been stunning audiences on the Great White Way for 20 years… and now, the show has released its very first dual-language music video, for the show’s epic ballad, “Can You Feel the Love Tonight”… or, in Spanish, “Puedes Sentir El Amor.” Delight your senses by taking a gander at the charming clip, above.

Performed in Spanish and English, the video features Agustín Argüello, who plays Simba in the Mexico City production (now playing at the Telcel Theater), and Adrienne Walker, who currently stars as Nala on Broadway. It’s all in celebration of the show’s 20th anniversary on Broadway at the Minskoff Theatre—as well as the show’s whopping 24 productions around the globe. Find out more about The Lion King’s incredible history on the musical theater stage right here.

A Wrinkle in Time is an epic adventure based the timeless classic, in which audiences will travel across dimensions of time and space, examining the nature of darkness versus light and, ultimately, the triumph of love. Through one girl’s journey—led by three mysterious celestial guides—moviegoers will discover that strength comes from embracing one’s individuality… and that the best way to triumph over fear is to travel by one’s own light. Also starring Chris Pine, Gugu Mbatha-Raw, and Zach Galifianakis, the film debuts March 9.

Celebrate the Force of Friendship with These 13 Disney Duos

By Megan Deppe

The Star Wars franchise has gifted us with so many iconic friendships, from R2-D2 and C-3PO and Luke and Han, to Rey and BB-8. We’re inspired when we see two friends stand by each other, support each other… and maybe even tease a little bit. Friendships as strong as these can be found throughout the many worlds of Disney, so we decided to look back at some of the dynamic duos that we aspire to find in our own lives.

Finn and Poe

1. Finn and Poe (Star Wars: The Force Awakens)
We’re excited for everything that The Last Jedi has to offer, and we’re hoping we’ll get to see the continued bromance of Finn and Poe. Ever since Poe gave Finn his jacket—and, of course, a real name—these two characters have had a relationship like no other. Even BB-8 loves the two of them! All fingers are crossed that they get sent on more missions together as they fight to free the galaxy from the First Order.

Stitch and Lilo

2. Lilo and Stitch (Lilo & Stitch)
This human-alien duo danced their way into our hearts while they danced along to Elvis, learning how to create an ‘ohana’ when their worlds were falling apart. When Lilo wished upon a star for “the nicest angel you have” to be her friend, she didn’t get quite what she asked for, but exactly what they both needed.

Judy and Nick

3. Judy Hopps and Nick Wilde (Zootopia)
Who could have imagined that such a great pair could come from a couple of clever hustles? Nick hustled Judy into a free jumbo pop, and she paid him back by blackmailing him into helping her track down Mr. Otterton. Judy’s optimism and determination are a good match for Nick’s street smarts, and the city of Zootopia is safer with the two of them on patrol. It doesn’t matter who is predator and who is prey—the two of them make the world a better place!

Timon and Pumba

4. Timon and Pumbaa (The Lion King)
Have you ever used one of these names in a sentence without automatically including the other? These two misfits took in a lost little lion cub and taught him the meaning of “Hakuna Matata,” becoming one of the best duos Disney has ever brought to the screen. Whether they’re chowing down on grubs or distracting the hyenas, they belong together, with no worries for the rest of their days!

Chip and Dale

5. Chip and Dale (Chip ’n’ Dale Rescue Rangers)
Chip and Dale have been amusing us since 1943, but the inseparable chipmunks’ friendship has stood the test of time. Whether they are just annoying Donald or working as Rescue Rangers, these chipmunks can navigate any obstacle, as long as they’re together.

Copper and Todd

6. Tod and Copper (The Fox and the Hound)
“You’re not even aware you’re such a funny pair.” That is the ultimate friendship goal, to enjoy each other’s company so much that you don’t care what anyone else thinks. On paper, this duo should never have come to be—a hound dog and the fox he is born to hunt—but that makes their friendship all the sweeter. They prove that you should never let anyone else tell with whom you can and cannot be friends.

Rocket and Groot

7. Rocket and Groot (Marvel Studios’ Guardians of the Galaxy)
Sometimes the best duos are the ones that only make sense to the duo itself. Rocket and Groot are a complete set, and they bring out the best in each other. Rocket, the only one who can understand the many subtleties of “I am Groot,” makes sure that no one pushes his big tree around, and Groot doesn’t hesitate to remind Rocket to be a little nicer to people. Even before the Guardians formed, Rocket and Groot were a package deal and we’d never want to see them any other way.

Mike and Sulley

8. Mike and Sulley (Monsters, Inc.)
From college rivals to scare floor bros, Mike and Sulley have been one of the greatest Disney pairs, no matter how much they may bicker. These two have worked their way up to become the best Scare team in the company, but they also learn together how effective they can be when they turn their energies toward something more positive. There’s nothing like having a friend to push you to do your best, especially when you can repay him by calling him “Googly-Bear” whenever you get the chance.

Lumiere and Cogsworth

9. Cogsworth and Lumiere (Beauty and the Beast)
We all need a little balance in our lives, and balance is what makes Lumiere and Cogsworth “a cut above the rest.” Though the two have different ideas about how to accomplish their goals, they can respect each other and work together to accomplish them. Their teamwork keeps Beast’s castle functioning—and also hopeful!—and they make it possible for the relationship between Belle and Beast to grow. You can’t get much better as a duo than that!

Kim Possible and Ron Stoppable

10. Kim Possible and Ron Stoppable (Kim Possible)
Their names may be polar opposites, but these two teenage crime fighters come together as an unbeatable pair. Even before these two crime-stoppers started dating (FINALLY), they complemented each other perfectly from the moment they met at nap time. Kim is a perfectionist who holds herself to high standards, while Ron is more laid back and calm, which helps Kim take herself less seriously. Kim’s bravery helps to inspire Ron to be the best he can be.

Buzz and Woody from Toy Story

11. Buzz and Woody (Toy Story)
If any duo could go to infinity and beyond, it is definitely our favorite cowboy and Space Ranger. Whether they’re trapped together in a claw machine or escaping daycare, Buzz and Woody have stuck by each other. Sure, it may have started off a little rocky at first when someone may have pushed someone else out the window, but these two definitely have a friend in each other now!

Koda and Kenai from Brother Bear

12. Kenai and Koda (Brother Bear)
What friendship doesn’t start off with a little annoyance? Kenai may not have connected with Koda from the very beginning, but these two eventually realized that they’re actually quite a bit alike. They share a love for fun and can’t help but engage in some harmless brotherly teasing to make a road trip less boring. Koda helps Kenai come to terms with the tragic loss of his brother, and as the two become a new “family,” Kenai also gives Koda something he’d never had before—a sibling of his own.

Chewbacca and Han Solo from The Force Awakens

13. Han and Chewbacca (Star Wars)
Leia may have initially dismissed them as a scruffy-looking nerf-herder and walking carpet, but Han and Chewbacca’s friendship is iconic! This is the type of friendship we all want, one with unconditional support (even if you have to make fun of your buddy a little…) and someone who will stay true to the end. Their “Chewy, we’re home” moment in The Force Awakens filled us with tears of joy, and we’re looking forward to seeing the earlier days of their relationship in the upcoming Solo: A Star Wars Story.

5 Things to Watch for in The Muppet Christmas Carol

By William Keck

The Muppet Christmas Carol has everything Muppet fans expect to see in a Kermit/Piggy movie. Big name guest star? Check! A wise-cracking bear? Check! Feel-good musical numbers? Plenty! But if you plan on re-watching the timeless holiday classic on the occasion of its 25th anniversary (and we highly recommend you do), you’ll want to keep an eye out for a few special gems (characters, costumes, cool effects) unique to this film. And be sure follow Sir Michael Caine’s lead (see item No. 4 below) by resisting the urge to blink, because if you do, you’ll surely miss something sensational, inspirational or even Muppetational.

The Muppet Christmas Carol

1. In each of his Muppet movies, Jim Henson challenged himself to create an effect that had never before been attempted on screen. So it’s no surprise that when Brian Henson was developing The Muppet Christmas Carol, the young director looked to emulate his late father’s tradition. The result is a brief moment in the film that at the time was truly head-scratching for audiences: seeing Kermit from head to toe dancing down a cobblestone street with nephew Robin perched on his shoulder. Accomplished without digital effects so commonplace today, Henson pulled off the trick by positioning Kermit atop a rolling barrel texturized with snow-covered cobblestone so as to blend seamlessly with the street beneath his little webbed feet. “We never had a Muppet walking full-figured before,” says Henson, still proud of his innovation. “It was tricky, but it worked!”

2. In addition to Jim Henson, The Muppet Christmas Carol is dedicated to the memory of puppeteer Richard Hunt, who voiced such Muppet favorites as Scooter, Janice, Sweetums, and Statler before his death in January 1992. As a nod to their late friend, Brian Henson, along with puppeteers Dave Goelz (Gonzo) and David Rudman, who inherited some of Hunt’s characters, included an Easter Egg tribute during the “It Feels Like Christmas” musical number when Scrooge’s cold heart begins to noticeably melt. “David Rudman and I choreographed two horses dancing, and I thought I’d make one a tribute to Richard, who for a long while had a gap between his two front teeth that was part of his identity,” Goelz says. “So I cut the two front teeth apart on one of the horses and named him ‘Richmond.’ As a continuing joke between Brian and me, the horse sent Brian emails wanting to get in more scenes.”

The Muppet Christmas Carol

3. In The Muppet Christmas Carol, the Ghosts of Christmas Past, Present, and Christmas Yet to Come are all played by original puppet creations never seen again—a childlike sprite, a playful ginger giant, and a silent cloaked Grim Reaper-like figure. But in early drafts of the script, familiar Muppet characters were to have filled these roles. “I think we had Scooter or Robin as the Ghost of Christmas Past, Piggy in the Present, and a hooded Gonzo as Christmas Yet to Come,” shares Brian Henson. “But then we started thinking, ‘Where can we sincerely put the Muppet characters?’—and it started to cast itself. We decided it would be more fun if Kermit and Piggy were married and half their kids are frogs and half are pigs.” (One thought was to make the pigs green and the frogs pink, but ultimately Henson vetoed that as “a little too weird.”)

The Muppet Christmas Carol

4. Sir Michael Caine is known for never blinking opposite his co-stars, who have included such Hollywood heavy hitters as Christian Bale, Steve Martin, and Mike Myers, to name just a few. Caine applied the same technique in his role as Ebenezer Scrooge while sharing the screen with such favorites as Kermit, Miss Piggy, and Beaker. “In real life, people don’t blink when they’re talking to you,” explains the two-time Oscar® “It’s only actors who blink in the movies.” And to Caine, his Muppet co-stars were not puppets attached to human puppeteers, but respected thespians just like himself. “All you can see are the puppets, and you just act along with them.” But there was one notable difference Caine came to appreciate about the Muppets in comparison to traditional movie stars. “Human actors can be a little difficult at times. But the puppets and puppeteers were lovely, gentle people. It was extraordinary.”

The Muppet Christmas Carol

5. For the film, costume designer Polly Smith and her team were tasked with creating Victorian-era clothing for not only Caine’s Scrooge, but for Fozzie Bear’s Fozziwig, Kermit’s Bob Cratchit, and all the other human and Muppet characters great and small. Such was the attention to detail that real buttons, lining, and even practical pockets were sewn into the character’s coats. “You could unbutton the coats and put something in the pockets,” Goelz says. “They were works of art. We always said the Muppets dressed better than we did.”

More Details on Walt Disney World Resort’s Disney Skyliner System

The Disney Skyliner system, transporting guests in the sky from select Disney resorts to Epcot and Disney’s Hollywood Studios, was first announced this summer at D23 Expo, and now we have a closer look at the new transportation option coming to Walt Disney World.

Disney Skyliner

Select Disney Skyliner cabins will feature Disney characters on their exterior design, including favorites from films, Disney attractions, and of course, the “Fab Five.” Each Disney Skyliner station will be themed to the surrounding area and feature unique views as guests travel above Walt Disney World Resort.

Disney Skyliner

International Gateway at Epcot––Inspired by the European pavilions near the entrance, this station will feature canopies, hand-painted murals, and ornamental steel structures inspired by the early 18th-century Art Nouveau style. Guests traveling to Epcot aboard the Disney Skyliner can take in a stunning aerial view of World Showcase.

Disney Skyliner

Disney’s Caribbean Beach Resort––The station, which will be the hub of activity for Disney Skyliner, will be inspired by the open-air village marketplaces of the Caribbean. Here, guests can transfer gondola routes or enjoy the waterfront.

Disney Skyliner

Disney’s Hollywood Studios––When traveling to Disney’s Hollywood Studios from Disney’s Caribbean Beach Resort, passengers will get a bird’s-eye view of some of the park’s attractions, including The Twilight Zone Tower of Terror. When guests arrive at the station, they’ll recognize the familiar theming and coloring of the park’s main entrance and bus stations at the Disney Skyliner station.

Disney’s Pop Century Resort and Disney’s Art of Animation Resort––The resorts’ shared Disney Skyliner station will be themed in a complementary style to both resorts and will travel above Hourglass Lake and feature a panoramic view of both resorts.

Stay tuned for more information about this exciting addition to Walt Disney World Resort.
