Ming-Na Wen Talks Mulan’s Milestone and Disney Favorites

By Jeffrey Epstein

This month, the beloved animated film Mulan celebrates its 20th anniversary. Recently Ming-Na Wen, who voiced Mulan and plays Agent Melinda May on Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., reflected on this milestone for Disney twenty-three magazine. Here are some exclusive web extras.

Ming-Na Wen

D23: What do you remember personally about making the film?
Ming-Na Wen (MW): That was my first voiceover job ever, and I knew nothing about the process. I came from theater, where it’s such an ensemble work environment, and you go into this world where you are singled out as the sole actor every time you go into the session. I never worked with Eddie Murphy, B.D. Wong, or any of the other actors. It was just me, the reader, and the director, then writers and producers who were all behind a glass screen. It was just so much fun to be able to bring a character to life just using your voice and your imagination.

Ming-Na Wen

D23: Did you have a sense of the film’s future popularity when you were making it?
MW: Not at all. I was excited to be part of a big Disney animation film. I was thrilled that they were taking a piece of very popular and renowned folklore from China and trying to create a beautiful but fun story about this girl discovering her own strength. But I had no perception about what the impact would be. After I saw the final product, I was mesmerized.

Mulan

D23: Why do you feel the love for Mulan is so enduring?
MW: You know, there is just so much love for the character that it bypasses any of the cultural differences of the kids who are watching. And they get a greater sense of feeling—a connection—to Mulan, because it doesn’t matter that she’s Chinese or that she’s from a whole different cultural time period. For them, they’re just watching this girl discovering who she is. And that universal story crosses all boundaries of cultural or racial boundaries. And I think that is its ultimate success.

D23: You have done many projects with us—is there something that attracts you to working with Disney?
MW: Disney creates quality entertainment and really tries to adhere to more family values while still branching off and covering a bigger canvas of audience. I think it’s great to also have a company like Disney where they also are aware of the need for some changes, but still try to maintain their core values of being decent and humane in their storytelling.

The Little Mermaid

D23: What’s your favorite Disney song that’s not from Mulan?
MW: “Part of Your World.” I love that song. It’s the most wonderful song. When I first heard it, I was like huh… I don’t know, it just made so much sense to me.

Beauty and the Beast

D23: What your favorite animated movie that is not Mulan?
MW: I loved Beauty and the Beast when it came out. It had a great impact on me. But that’s like Sophie’s Choice right there. There have been so many amazing Disney movies: Cinderella, Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, Dumbo, Bambi, Mary Poppins. Too many to choose from!

D23 Fab Five: Ming-Na Wen Shares Her Top Disney Heroines

By Jeffrey Epstein

From Mulan to Agent Melinda May, Ming-Na Wen has a rich history of playing fierce warriors. In celebration of Mulan’s 20th anniversary, we asked her to name her top five “kick-butt” Disney characters.

Star Wars

Princess Leia
“Similar to Mulan, she followed her own heart and believed in herself. She’s truly just a soldier, as well. She didn’t take any crap from the men. She was equal. And that’s what’s so amazing about her. And, of course, she was played by Carrie Fisher.”

Agents of SHIELD

Agent Melinda May
“She’s my favorite character. Playing her is such a gift. I get to play a really kick-butt character and get paid for it. So it’s a fantastic win-win situation.

Moana

Moana
“She was fearless. She defied everyone and changed the course of her life and the lives of her people.”

Frozen

Elsa
“I really like Elsa. Elsa kind of went to the dark side and then had to find her way back and discovered that love is ultimately what wins out—it’s stronger and more powerful. And I think that was a very different take for a heroine.”

Mulan

Mulan
“Of course.”

How to Costume a Super in Incredibles 2

By Courtney Potter

One of the most memorable elements of Disney•Pixar’s 2004 animated hit The Incredibles (besides its hilarious characters and action-packed adventure!) was its “mid-century modern” aesthetic; from the cars and the clothing to the architecture of the Parrs’ hometown of Municiberg, it was a look that—combined with distinct nods to the future—was truly unique. And with Incredibles 2, that attention to detail continues with… well, incredible results!

Case in point: the unparalleled styling of the Incredibles 2 characters. Whether it was Helen Parr/Elastigirl (voice of Holly Hunter), genius inventor Evelyn Deavor (voice of Catherine Keener), fashion icon Edna Mode (voice of Brad Bird), or a background “actor” walking the Municiberg streets, the artists at Disney•Pixar paid special attention to every person you see on screen. D23 was lucky enough to hear from several of these amazing artists—character & costume designer Deanna Marsigliese; shading art director & costume designer Bryn Imagire; and character tailoring lead Fran Kalal—during a recent visit to Pixar Animation Studios in Emeryville, California, about what went into making special clothing for a very special project.

Incredibles 2

On creating a fashion line for Edna Mode…
One of Marsigliese’s first assignments was creating an entire line of clothing “designed” by fan-favorite Edna Mode—a line that (as it doesn’t appear in the final film) became a study in her inimitable character. As Marsigliese explains, “I looked back to the original Incredibles artwork, and got a sense of Edna’s personal style—her iconic dress and also the interior [of her house]. And one thing that was very clear, and she states in that first film, is that she likes to be bold and dramatic. But knowing this would only get me so far… What was another known quality that I could pull from? That Edna is a ‘woman of the now,’ she doesn’t look back—and her ‘now’ is a very mid-century world… But I also knew she would have the guts to really reinvent it. So I started to research designers like Schiaparelli, [who] in the 1950s was completely ahead of her time; she used a lot of surrealist elements, a lot of fun surprises, and that was very inspiring for me.”

Incredibles 2

On updating the look for characters created 14 years ago…
“The original Super suits were ‘shaded’ as fabric onto the bodies of the characters,” says Imagire. “With the new suits, Fran [Kalal] and her team actually made these garments from patterns, so they can have a fabric texture and they don’t stretch around as much… With Helen/Elastigirl, for instance, she’s helping to bring back Supers. For this movie, it felt like Mary Tyler Moore, Marilyn Monroe, and Audrey Hepburn were great examples because they feel strong, career-minded, and fabulous at the same time… We looked at vintage wet suits, and because she has to be a running around in the dark—and be a little bit more ‘conspicuous’ in this film—we made the colors darker… For Violet, because she’s rebellious, I felt like the 1950s shape wasn’t really her style—so we went more towards cut-off jeans and sneakers and sweaters that seemed more in her character.”

Incredibles 2

On the notions behind Evelyn Deavor’s looks…
Continues Imagire, “For inspiration for Evelyn, [director] Brad Bird asked me to look at [singers] Patti Smith, Laurie Anderson, Annie Lennox, and [actress] Diane Keaton. He wanted Evelyn to feel bohemian. She’s a designer [herself]—she works a lot, so she couldn’t be hindered by her clothes. I also looked at the 1960s British Vogue fashion spread of [model] Jean Shrimpton, because I felt like it was an iconic time where fashion was changing from the ‘50s to the ‘60s.”

Incredibles 2

On why “practical” isn’t necessarily boring…
“[Being practical] is full of really cool challenges,” admits Marsigliese. “And it’s really centered around being clever and efficient. This is especially true when we talk about background characters. Why? Because there are hundreds of men, women, and children, and they all have to be dressed… The tone is very ‘mid-century modern’-inspired—with departures. We do add modern twists, but this was the platform… I really wanted to look at what made 1950s day-to-day wear iconic. So I studied a lot of ‘home sew’ patterns, and I used them to better understand the aspects of mid-century day wear… Perfectly tailored fit was the most defining quality I found… So what we wanted to do is find a look that’s iconic and stylish but simple—that falls back, and doesn’t detract from the principal action on the screen.”

Incredibles 2

On how character tailoring brings it all together…
“I lead a team of people who take what we know about fashion and art to construct the outfits on the computer,” says Kalal, “and what we know about math and science to make those outfits move correctly. So we take the designs from our amazing character artists and costume designers and then we realize them… For the background males, we made 12 unique garments and refit them to six different body types, [which created] 72 uniquely costumed characters… [And for the] females, they had 20 unique garments with seven body types with colored hair variations, creating another 64 uniquely costumed characters! With the detailed research and feedback from Deanna and Bryn, we were able to achieve that true authenticity in a mid-century look.”

Yeah, Baby! Jack-Jack Gets Super in Incredibles 2

By Courtney Potter

It was one of the most memorable moments in Disney•Pixar’s 2004 hit The Incredibles: Unseen by the rest of his family, adorable baby Jack-Jack exhibits his own amazing powers as he tries to escape from the clutches of villainous Syndrome. And now, with a reintroduction to Municiberg’s special supers in Incredibles 2, fans around the world—much like the Parr family themselves—are also learning much, much more about Jack-Jack’s potential… which includes almost a dozen astonishing abilities. One of the toddler’s flashiest skills? Pyrokinesis—or the capacity to burst into flames!

Jason Johnston and Bill Watral

During a recent trip to Pixar Animation Studios in Emeryville, California, D23 heard from several Incredibles 2 filmmakers—including effects artist Jason Johnston (pictured above left) and effects supervisor Bill Watral (pictured above right)—about conceiving and creating such a unique “talent” for such a tiny super.

Jack-Jack from Incredibles 2

Jack-Jack’s powers (so far at least) run the gamut from laser vision to multiplication, from transforming into a gelatinous pink “goo” to teleportation… but it was his ability to create flame, first seen in the 2004 film, that proved an intriguing challenge to filmmakers. “When we first started, we went back and looked at what was done [for The Incredibles],” explains Johnston, “and after looking at the original, we decided to take the opportunity to redesign it.” “Reading Jack-Jack’s face was really important,” Watral adds. “We created a shading treatment so that his facial expressions were clear: ‘I’m on fire but that’s OK! This is fun!’ We never want anyone to forget that this is a baby with powers.” Plus, Johnston says, “Because the technology has changed so much, we can really do more to [develop] the look.”

Jack-Jack concept art from Incredibles 2

“We met with [production designer] Ralph Eggleston, and he was very specific in that Jack-Jack is the source of the fire,” Johnston continues. “He’s not ‘on fire’—so what this means is that there’ll be no smoke and no embers ever coming off of him, but things that he’s lit on fire can have them.” Watral, Johnston, and their fellow artists looked to many different references, including heat sources that don’t actually burn themselves, like those unique (often color-changing) barbecue “fire-starter” cubes. Test after test was created: ones with different scale; varying color gradients; even different versions of Jack-Jack’s eyes—all of which “allowed everyone to look at the same images,” Johnston explains, “and talk about what they liked and what they didn’t, what worked and what didn’t… but it’s also really important to do tests that pushed a ‘visual space’ that’s completely wrong. You may find something you didn’t expect. It’s really good to explore all options, even if they seem wrong in concept.”

Ultimately, as Watral discloses, “The effect should never outshine the humor.” It’s obvious his team succeeded: Even at D23 Expo 2017, when a special “sneak peek” of Jack-Jack’s hilarious fight with a nefarious backyard raccoon was shown to audiences, the reaction was—and continues to be—positively priceless. “Jack-Jack has many powers, and they’re fun to see how he uses them in this film,” adds Johnston. “They were equally as fun to create, and we had a blast working on them.”

5 Irresistible Moments from the Incredibles 2 Press Conference

By Courtney Potter

Ready to get incredible? In advance of Incredibles 2’s June 15 release, D23 heard some memorable behind-the-scenes tidbits from filmmakers and cast.

incredibles 2

In Disney•Pixar’s Incredibles 2, Helen Parr (voice of Holly Hunter), otherwise known as Elastigirl, is called upon to help bring Supers back, while husband Bob (voice of Craig T. Nelson)—aka Mr. Incredible— navigates the day-to-day heroics of “normal” life at home. But when a brilliant new villain hatches a dangerous plot that only the Incredibles can overcome, they’ve gotta do it… together! Just a few days ago, D23 made our own return trip to Municiberg—actually, it was the film’s press conference in Los Angeles, California—to hear some behind-the-scenes tidbits from the filmmakers and stars themselves!

Director Brad Bird and producers John Walker and Nicole Grindle gathered members of the film’s voice cast—including Nelson, Hunter, Samuel L. Jackson (Lucius Best/Frozone), Sarah Vowell (Violet), Sophia Bush (Voyd), Bob Odenkirk (Winston Deavor), and Catherine Keener (Evelyn Deavor)—to share stories from the making of the film and why it’s so, well, incredible.

Here are five of the most irresistible moments:

incredibles 2

Director Brad Bird on why they set Incredibles 2 immediately after the events of 2004’s The Incredibles…

“I just thought it was kind of bold and weird,” explains Bird. “Because I think people take the time that passes very literally. And they think that linearly, the characters should have aged. But if they age, their superpowers don’t reflect the part of life that they’re in and their role in the family… I realized that what excited me about the idea [of The Incredibles] in the first place was not the Supers. It was that it was about the family dynamic, and people’s roles in different parts of their lives. And Supers—[that] genre is like a twist of lemon that you squeeze on top. It’s not what the movie is about… Families are a continent of fresh opportunities, because they’re so universal.”

incredibles 2

Craig T. Nelson on finding out Bob Parr’s “mission” in the film

“I found out that I’m going to be helping save the family, and Bob is going to learn how to be a better dad and he’s going to learn about these kids,” Nelson says. “And then the process started when we were recording. It was just so much fun. The stuff I did with Violet and Jack-Jack and that whole discovery. And then Dash. And then having to deal with Elastigirl out there doing what I want to do, and being able to give her the encouragement, let her know that everything is OK. It was just a lot of fun. I’m so honored to be a part of it.”

incredibles 2

Holly Hunter on working with Brad Bird, and character discoveries…

“[Brad] is the screenplay,” says Hunter. “He was my walking encyclopedia. He was my instruction manual. It was a while before I truly realized what I was really going to get to do in the movie. And I was really thrilled. But it was like a retroactive thrill, because [it was] over a period of months before I started gleefully singing during our recording sessions about how great my part was. But to me, it was just really fun. And I don’t think that this is a message movie in any way… [the current climate] happens to be serendipitously reflected in this particular movie [with Elastigirl’s journey]. But at the same time, it’s character revelation—period. Everybody is having revelations, including Jack-Jack. All the characters are revelations to the audience and to themselves. So I’m no exception, as Elastigirl.”

Sarah Vowell telling Holly Hunter about her favorite scene in Incredibles 2…

“I like that one scene with [Helen and Bob], early on in the film, where you go outside to talk because you’re both out of a job,” Vowell explains. “And it happens to everyone. Your house just got like blown up by a super villain. And you’re like, ‘Where are we going to live? What are we going to do for money?’ And there is shared love there. But also just that shared worry that is a really grown-up, affecting, beautiful scene between the two of you.”

incredibles 2

Bob Odenkirk on seeing Incredibles 2 for the first time…

“I loved it,” Odenkirk admits. “I’ve been knocked out by the visuals in this film. And I’d only seen little moments from it in the course of recording. So to see it in big beautiful color on the giant screen, I knew it was going to be amazing—and it is beyond all expectations. I feel like somehow there’s new technology that [the filmmakers] aren’t telling us about! Because it’s got such richness and depth that was a great treat… I’m amazed at Brad’s talent as a writer and director and orchestrator of story. There’s like five movies in this movie—and they all work together to throw each other into relief and make each other better.”
