Get the Inside Scoop on The Bold Type’s Powerful Return

By Beth Deitchman

The mid-season finale of Freeform’s The Bold Type found Sutton, Kat, and Jane all facing new and daunting challenges. Sutton (Meghann Fahy) finally earned a coveted promotion to become the new stylist at Scarlet magazine, though she had to accept that chasing her own dreams at the New York publication means living apart for now from her brand-new husband, Richard. Kat (Aisha Dee) was fired from her role as social media manager after publishing the (illegally obtained) tax returns of Scarlet’s publisher, RJ Safford; she followed her conscience, but where will she go from here? And Jane (Katie Stevens) made the difficult decision to end her relationship with Ryan on the eve of her elective double mastectomy, rather than allow the fear of being alone keep her tied to a relationship with someone who has been unfaithful. These are difficult, life-altering changes for all three friends but, as Sutton noted in the cliffhanger episode, “Nothing is bigger than us.”

Last weekend, Stevens, Dee, and Fahy joined The Bold Type’s executive producer and showrunner Wendy Straker Hauser for a panel taking place during ATX TV… from the Couch!, a three-day festival in celebration of all things television, held virtually for the first time this year. The stars previewed what’s to come when The Bold Type’s fourth season picks back up on Freeform this Thursday, June 11 (10 p.m. ET/PT, 9 p.m. CT), and offered a glimpse into the friendship—both on screen and off—that extends far beyond the Scarlet fashion closet.

the bold type

According to Straker Hauser, The Bold Type’s success stems from a dynamic mix of personalities that begins with the writing staff. “If I cast the [writers’] room right and we have amazing people from all different walks of life, then in a really beautiful way, it just organically comes out,” she shares. The writers find inspiration for the series’ relevant and relatable stories from the characters themselves, and Straker Hauser is grateful the show boasts three lead actresses who will speak their minds should something not feel true to their character. “We have conversations, and every single time we have them, the result is 20 times better than had we not,” the executive producer said. “I think we’re all extremely collaborative.”

Katie Stevens found that partnership to be invaluable while she was filming Jane’s recovery from her surgery. The producers arranged for doctors to be on set, to offer specific guidance for Stevens about what Jane would and would not be able to do in the days and weeks after her operation. Stevens also drew from personal experience, having lost her mother-in-law to breast cancer. “I care so much about this story and I want to tell it with as much reality and authenticity as we can have,” she emphasized.

the bold type

That commitment to authenticity means that Jane’s recovery process will be complicated and she won’t get through it in a single episode. In the coming months, Straker Hauser noted, “We’ll explore what happens when your physical scars have healed but your emotional scars have not.”

the bold type

As her journey continues, Jane will have Sutton and Kat by her side but they’re navigating new emotional challenges, as well. Sutton, who married Richard and landed her dream job in the mid-season finale, will be struggling with work-life balance like never before. Meghann Fahy shared, “I think it’s pretty intense for her. It’s really cool to see her succeeding finally and becoming a stylist; that’s the point that we’ve been trying to get her to for the first four seasons of the show, so I think it really pays off. But something that Sutton learns is that it never really gets easy to have it all.”

the bold type

And as Sutton and Jane’s careers are both on the rise, Kat finds herself struggling. “For Kat, she’s lived with this financial safety net her entire life and, for the first time, that’s all stripped away,” Aisha Dee detailed. “And also, the kind of built-in confidence of being social media manager of Scarlet magazine is also taken away so she has to go and re-find herself.”

With The Bold Type’s return coming at a time when people across the U.S. are grappling with great uncertainty and unrest, the series’ stars hope the show will bring some comfort and peace to viewers and be the “safe haven” it’s been for them. The show has never been afraid to address uncomfortable topics, Straker Hauser points out, and she hopes its fearless storytelling and characters will continue to reflect the world of its audience. “I think there’s something beautiful about our platform and about Freeform for giving us our platform,” she shared. “I promise we will not shy away from the things that are happening today—both heartbreaking and inspiring. I think great change is coming from it and these three women embody what happens when you have three powerful, bold women who are going to call each other out and make each other better.”

Donald Duck, Model Citizen

By Becky Cline, Director, Walt Disney Archives

Universally acclaimed and internationally adored for his often-explosive qualities, Donald Duck is one of the world’s most famous and beloved personalities. He is also a model United States citizen!

A star was hatched with the June 9, 1934, release of Walt Disney’s Silly Symphony The Wise Little Hen, in which the self-centered duck danced a clever hornpipe and faked a bellyache. Supposedly a minor supporting character, Donald waddled away with the show.

Donald quickly became Mickey’s co-star, and was also often teamed with both Mickey and Goofy as one of the screen’s greatest comedy teams. But Donald’s popularity eclipsed even that of Mickey’s, and the cocky Duck was showcased in his own star vehicles, starting with Don Donald (1937). His short-fused temper, explosive tantrums, and flustered incompetence in the face of obstacles and irritants had audiences delirious with laughter at his antics—and empathizing with his enraged response to life’s frustrations.

“The Duck was very versatile,” Duck director and story artist Jack Hannah once said. “He had every emotion a human being had.  He could be cute, mischievous, go from warm to cold at any moment.”

Reflecting his fame and worldwide fan base, Donald starred in more than 150 short subjects, features and featurettes—more than any other Disney star. But many of his legion of fans are unaware of his deep patriotic streak and myriad contributions to his country.

In The New Spirit (1942) Donald portrays a reluctant taxpayer who is reminded via radio broadcast to promptly pay his income tax. After begrudgingly hearing about everything that his tax dollars do to support national World War II efforts, Donald has a patriotic change of heart and quickly fills out his tax forms—and in a burst of enthusiasm races from California to Washington, D.C. to submit his tax return in person.

The short was made “without profit” for the United States Treasury Department and distributed by the War Activities Committee of the Motion Picture Industry. The United States Secretary of the Treasury at the time, Henry Morgenthau Jr., originally objected to using Donald Duck in the film, but Walt assured him that offering Donald was the equivalent of MGM offering him Clark Gable—the Secretary relented and Donald jumped in with both webbed feet.

Morgenthau was wise to listen to Walt, as The New Spirit was hugely successful. The U.S. Treasury Department estimated that more than 60 million Americans saw the short, and according to a Gallup Poll, 37 percent of the people who viewed the cartoon said that it had directly affected their willingness to pay their taxes—generating billions in income for Uncle Sam.

The following year, in a second Treasury short, The Spirit of ’43, Donald encouraged Americans to be conservative with their money and save in preparation for increased income taxes due to the war. That same year, Donald appeared with Horace Horsecollar in a poster distributed by the National Wartime Nutrition Program encouraging workers to eat a good breakfast everyday—with the tagline “you can’t eat like a bird and work like a horse!” During these war years, Donald and his friends also encouraged the public to support efforts like the USO and the Victory War Bonds drive. Due to these efforts and more, in 1943 The New York Times singled out Donald Duck as an “ambassador-at-large, a salesman of the American Way” for his representation of the United States both at home and abroad.

Of course, it wasn’t just on the home front that Donald shone in the 1940s. Following in the footsteps of fellow Hollywood superstars like Jimmy Stewart and Clark Gable, Donald Duck served in the military when duty called. A very patriotic Donald boosted morale in Der Fuehrer’s Face (1943), one of the most famous Donald Duck cartoons ever made and the winner of the Academy Award® for Best Cartoon Short Subject of 1942-43. His personal Army experiences were also documented in a number of wartime shorts throughout the war years, beginning with Donald Gets Drafted in 1942.

Following the war, in the 1950s Donald continued his tradition of public service by headlining a number of “awareness” productions including How to Have an Accident in the Home (1956) and How to Have an Accident at Work (1959). In 1959, the celebrated Duck starred in one of the most popular educational films ever produced, Donald in Mathmagic Land, followed by Donald and the Wheel (1961), The Litterbug (1961), and his widely screened safety film, Donald’s Fire Survival Plan (1966).

Walt Disney himself may have said it best when it came to summing up his ducky star: “Donald is a very outrageous fellow, with bad manners and a worse temper, and everyone is fond of him, including myself.” So, like Walt, we should look fondly on our favorite duck, because as bad mannered as Donald can sometimes be, he is always a good citizen… and always washes his hands…

Walt’s Woking Way

By Mike Buckhoff, Walt Disney Archives

In perhaps the most iconic photo of Walt Disney, Walt stands with a serious gaze out of a doorway as the shadow of his most famous creation reflects off the wall. For many years, the most puzzling aspect of this photo was… where was this taken? Of course, those who were involved knew the truth but that information faded away with time and, amazingly, this question would remain unanswered for years to come. However, with some detailed research between a Disney historian and the Walt Disney Archives, the location was uncovered.

For years, many thought the location to be the Disney studio along Hyperion Avenue, however, none of the then-known areas at the studio matched this photo. Additionally, the Persian rug below Walt’s feet did not match anything that was believed to have appeared at the Hyperion studio until Walt later upgraded to a larger office. So, one of the few alternative locations would be Walt’s home in Los Angeles on Woking Way. The problem: In an alternate shot from the same photo shoot one can see down the hallway to a wall which curves to the left. Well, today the main hallway leads straight into a restroom. This was baffling information to the Archives upon visiting the home in 2014.  But, after further research, plans of a remodel in that location of the home were located, proving the fact that the area in question was changed some time later. Original plans for the home were also obtained, which corroborated the modifications. Furthermore, in the alternate shot, one can make out a telephone just inside the doorway. Walt’s Woking Way home was originally outfitted with five telephone outlets, a large number for those days, including one in that exact location. This information, coupled with the homes’ additional matching features, finally revealed the spot where Walt (and Mickey Mouse) took this famous photo.

Occasionally, there are mysteries to be solved and information to be discovered. The Walt Disney Archives relishes these tasks and proudly preserves the lasting legacy and enduring creativity started by Walt Disney.

The Walt Disney Company Pledges $5 Million to Support Nonprofit Organizations That Advance Social Justice

By the D23 Team

The Walt Disney Company has pledged $5 million to support nonprofit organizations that advance social justice, beginning with a $2 million donation to the NAACP to further their longstanding work promoting social justice by eliminating disparities and racial discrimination through their advocacy and education programs.

“The killing of George Floyd has forced our nation to once again confront the long history of injustice that black people in America have suffered, and it is critical that we stand together, speak out, and do everything in our power to ensure that acts of racism and violence are never tolerated,” said Bob Chapek, Chief Executive Officer, The Walt Disney Company. “This $5 million pledge will continue to support the efforts of nonprofit organizations such as the NAACP that have worked tirelessly to ensure equality and justice.”

Today’s pledge is part of Disney’s ongoing commitment to support organizations that advance social justice. For many years, Disney has worked closely with groups that advocate for and empower communities of color, including the NAACP, whose mission is to ensure a society in which all individuals have equal rights without discrimination based on race. Disney has also previously provided millions of dollars in grants to help students from underrepresented groups make the dream of higher education a reality, including $2.5 million to the United Negro College Fund.

In addition, through the Disney Employee Matching Gifts program, employees are able to increase their impact in their communities by donating to eligible organizations, with Disney matching those gifts.

Disney has used its creative resources and platforms to address issues of race and inequality. On Tuesday night, Disney aired a slate of special programming on a number of its TV networks to encourage a discussion of racism and oppression in America. The programming included an ABC News primetime special, America in Pain: What Comes Next?, that examined the protests and outrage across the country in response to the killing of Mr. Floyd. The special was preceded by the re-airing of two monumental and timely episodes of black-ish: “Hope,” which explores the issue of police brutality and flaws in the judicial system, and “Juneteenth,” which examines the lack of accurate representation of African Americans in our nation’s history.

7 Disney Characters to Inspire At-Home Fun!

By Courtney Potter

There’s no time like the present to start a new hobby—or even recommit to one. (Don’t worry, we’ve all been there.) Thankfully, there is plenty of inspiration to be found around the worlds of Disney. From the joys of reading, cooking, and knitting, to learning how to play an instrument, and everything in between… there’s a ton of Disney-related fun to be had right inside your very own home. And the best part? All these films are available to watch on Disney+ for further motivation!

Read on for some of our favorite inspirations for at-home Disney fun:

beauty and the beast

Belle in Beauty and the Beast
If there’s a Disney “poster child” for all the incredible things that can come from reading—empathy, a keen imagination, a sense of right and wrong—it’s Belle in Disney’s Beauty and the Beast. The opening song even finds Belle at her favorite place in town: the book shop! There’s nothing like a good book to sweep you off into thrilling worlds of adventure. (Don’t forget: You can often read excerpts of brand-new Disney Publishing books right here at D23.com!)

ratatouille

Remy in Ratatouille
You’ve seen it all over your social media—folks making their way to the kitchen for some good, ol’ fashioned foodie fun. So if you haven’t already given that recipe for pesto or that sourdough starter a go, why not be like Remy in Disney and Pixar’s Ratatouille and don an apron, bring out some pots and pans, and make something amazing? We expect to see some gorgeous food photos on your social media shortly…

wreck-it ralph

Ralph and Vanellope in Wreck-It Ralph
What if you could hop into a candy-colored car and race off into the sweetest world you ever saw? Unfortunately, you can’t do that in real life… but you can certainly experience it—and all kinds of crazy worlds like it—through video games. Make like Ralph and Vanellope in Disney’s Wreck-It Ralph and take some time out to enjoy a new video game or two; they’re available for all ages, and some can be played by the whole family.

coco

Miguel in Coco
While it’s some at-home fun that certainly needs a bit more practice, we’d be remiss in not including “learning a musical instrument” on our list—the most recent Disney example of this being Miguel in Disney and Pixar’s Coco. There are all sorts of online tutorials available, for all manner of instruments. But don’t worry… we’re pretty sure learning the guitar won’t eventually result in your interacting with previously deceased relatives and visiting the Land of the Dead.

the little mermaid

Ariel in The Little Mermaid
Do you like searching through online auctions for all kinds of trinkets? Is there a beloved item from childhood you keep forgetting to launch a search for? Treasure hunting from the comfort of your couch is possible nowadays, and it’d mean you have a lot in common with Ariel from Disney’s The Little Mermaid. She couldn’t get enough of her incredible collection of “whozits and whatzits,” and—in her case—they actually helped her completely change her life. Ya never know!

tangled

Rapunzel in Tangled
Last on our list but certainly not least is the veritable champion of at-home fun: Rapunzel in Disney’s Tangled! What hobby hasn’t she tried? Reading, cleaning, baking, knitting, painting, darts (that one could be a little dangerous), candle-making, a bit of ballet and chess, even ventriloquism… There’s something for every taste in Rapunzel’s usual morning lineup, and we’re suitably inspired.

Dive into the Magical World of Artemis Fowl with an Exclusive Interview with Eoin Colfer

By the D23 Team

Artemis Fowl, the film adaption of the fantasy adventure novel by Eoin Colfer, will be casting its spell on us next week s on Disney+. While we count down the days to its June 12 debut, we’re using a little magic to pass the time by chatting with Colfer about the Artemis Fowl series, what it’s been like seeing his story come to life as a film, and creating fairies who are more than a little different from Tinker Bell:

D23: The Official Disney Fan Club: For Disney fans who haven’t yet read Artemis Fowl but plan to watch it on Disney+, give us a quick overview of what they can expect from the movie.
Eion Colfer (EC): Artemis Fowl is a fast paced and fun adventure which tells the story of a young criminal mastermind’s first adventure as he uncovers an advanced  fairy  world  beneath our own, and uses his intellect to outwit the fairy police force who may or may not be holding his father captive. On the way he learns the lesson that maybe it is  not so good to be bad. There is also a flatulent  dwarf,  an excitable  troll and  an elf  who  gets too  close to both for her own good.

D23: Tell us a little more about Josh Gad’s character, Mulch Diggums.
EC: Mulch Diggums is a dwarf who he uses his tunneling talents to become a burglar. When the fairy police need  someone to break into Fowl Manor they offer Mulch a century off his prison sentence to do the job.  In the book Mulch is a wise-cracking ne’er do well  who enjoys life to the fullest while relieving people of their valuables.  Josh has taken  the character to new heights by incorporating his own  famous improvisational skills so that e very line he says is a comedic  delight. His performance is without doubt one of this movie’s highlights.

D23:  In Artemis Fowl, there’s a whole secret world of fairies, and we’re not talking about fairies like Tinkerbell. Where did your inspiration come from when exploring these characters?
EC: I wanted to  bring something new to the fairy arena, or perhaps  I should say something old. When I  looked   back to 19th and 20th century Irish fairy stories I realized that fairies were not portrayed as tiny  waif like  creatures-  they were magical warriors and these  were the  fairies I wanted to portray. The idea to make t hem  technologically advanced seemed like common sense to me. After all how could the  fairy folk have stayed hidden for  so long unless they had superior tech?

D23: What was it like getting to watch the movie for the first time?
EC: It was a surreal experience to watch the  movie  for the first time.  Not many people  get  their books turned into movies, and even fewer  people have their books made into movies by Disney. It is still difficult for me to believe that a studio spent tens of millions of dollars hiring the best talent in the world to turn a book that was written in the spare  bedroom into a blockbuster movie. I was so stunned that  it was happening at all, that it wasn’t until the second viewing that I realized how great it was.

D23:  It’s been a long time coming for fans of the series to finally see a live-action adaptation of Artemis Fowl. What are some of your favorite changes that were made in the transition from page to screen?
EC: My favorite change has to be the casting of Judi Dench as Commander Root. She took the character in a fabulous new direction and totally nails her Irish accent. I also liked how Artemis’s backstory was front loaded so people who haven’t read the book will get a handle on why he is how he is.

From now until June 6, you can download the Artemis Fowl Movie Tie-In Edition eBook for only 99 cents!
