By Courtney Potter

Disney Channel Orders Second Season of The Ghost and Molly McGee

Ahead of its series premiere this October, our pals at Disney Channel have already ordered a sure-to-be-delightful second season of animated buddy-comedy The Ghost and Molly McGee!

Created and executive produced by Bill Motz and Bob Roth (LEGO Star Wars: The Freemaker Adventures), along with executive producer Steve Loter (Kim Possible), the series follows tween optimist Molly, who lives to make the world a better place, and grumpy ghost Scratch… whose job is, well, to spread misery. The first season will welcome guest stars Kelsey Grammer (Frasier), Natasha Rothwell (Insecure), Greta Gerwig (Lady Bird), Yvette Nicole Brown (Big Shot), Jenifer Lewis (black-ish), Danny Trejo (Machete), Patton Oswalt (Marvel’s M.O.D.O.K.), D’Arcy Carden (The Good Place), Jane Lynch (Glee), and more.

Joining the previously announced lead voice cast—Ashly Burch (Molly) and Dana Snyder (Scratch)—the additional main series voice cast includes Jordan Klepper (Klepper) as the voice of Pete, Molly’s anxiously idealistic father; Sumalee Montano (The Lost Symbol) as the voice of Sharon and Grandma Nin, Molly’s creatively pragmatic mother and adoring grandmother, respectively; and Michaela Dietz (Steven Universe) as the voice of Darryl, Molly’s mischievously entrepreneurial brother.

Look for the series premiere of The Ghost and Molly McGee on Friday, October 1, at 9:35 p.m. EDT on Disney Channel, following the debut of the new Disney Channel Original Movie Under Wraps. New episodes roll out Saturdays (9 a.m. ET) through November 27 on Disney Channel, with episodes available in October on Disney+.

5 Fantastic Things to Watch This Weekend

Well y’all, we’ve made it to Labor Day—can you believe it? Here’s hoping you’re able to get in some fun this three-day weekend… including taking in some choice viewing from around the worlds of Disney. What’s in store? For one, it’s the big Disney+ debut of Billie Eilish’s Happier than Ever: A Love Letter to Los Angeles on Friday. Plus, there’s the Hulu debut of The D’Amelio Show; a fun The Simpsons Back-to-School Marathon on FXX; and lots more.

Disney Cruise Line Reveals a New Look at AquaMouse

Snow? On a cruise ship?! Yep, it’s true: As recently revealed by the good folks at Disney Cruise Line, fun in the sun will go totally “next level” on the Disney Wish with the debut of AquaMouse—a brand-new family water attraction that will bring to life the adventures of The Wonderful World of Mickey Mouse animated shorts like never before!

The first-ever Disney attraction at sea, AquaMouse includes show scenes, lighting and special effects, and a host of splashtacular surprises. This first-of-its-kind water ride will send guests on a fun family adventure through 760 feet of winding tubes suspended high above the upper decks. As the story goes, Mickey and Minnie are starting their very own seaside excursion company—appropriately named “Port Misadventures”—on board the Disney Wish, and adventuresome cruisers will join them on an undersea excursion to Mermaid Lagoon… where things go inevitably, and hilariously, awry. The journey will begin when guests board their two-seater ride vehicles and ascend into a magical tunnel that will teleport them into the cartoon world of “Scuba Scramble,” a new animated short that plays out through oversized virtual portholes. Along the way, they’ll encounter curious sea creatures, familiar Disney friends, and more than 60 water effects that bring the subaquatic shenanigans to life—all synched to an original musical score by composer Christopher Willis.

There’s also a second show, called “Swiss Meltdown,” seen in the artist-rendered clip above—where Mickey and Minnie invite guests on a mountain sledding excursion. When the sun comes out and the snow melts, guests will be off on a frantic dash to the mountaintop while trying to avoid obstacles like avalanches, rock walls, and waterfalls. The story is inspired by one of the Emmy® Award-winning Mickey Mouse shorts Yodelberg.

Look for more Disney Wish news in the coming months, as it readies to set sail in 2022!

diary of a wimpy kid

Diary of a Wimpy Kid Coming to Disney+ This December

This holiday season, Disney+ gets a little… Wimpy! As just announced by the streaming service, the all-new animated adventure Diary of a Wimpy Kid will premiere exclusively this December 3.

The first book in Jeff Kinney’s worldwide bestselling series, Diary of a Wimpy Kid tells the tale of Greg Heffley—a scrawny but ambitious kid with a huge imagination and big plans to be rich and famous… he just has to survive middle school first. To make matters worse, Greg’s lovable best friend Rowley seems to coast through life and succeed at everything without even trying. While details of his hilarious, and often disastrous, attempts to fit in fill the pages of his journal, Greg learns to appreciate true friends and the satisfaction that comes from standing up for what is right. Directed by Swinton Scott (Futurama) and written and produced by Kinney, Diary of a Wimpy Kid will feature the voices of Brady Noon (The Mighty Ducks: Game Changers), Ethan William Childress (mixed-ish), and Chris Diamantopoulos (Mickey Mouse).

Kinney’s Diary of a Wimpy Kid books have sold a whopping 250+ million copies around the globe in just 14 years. “This film feels like the book come to life, and it’s exciting to see Greg Heffley and his family and friends in their fully-animated glory,” the author recently said. “It is the Wimpy world in a way no one has seen before. Working on this movie, I feel like we have been sitting on a wonderful secret. I can’t wait to finally share it with the world!”

Set in modern-day Hawai‘i, the series is shot on location in O’ahu. Series creator and executive producer Kourtney Kang, who was born in Hawai‘i and raised in a Philadelphia suburb by her Irish mom and Korean dad, has infused her own experiences into this story, centered on a mixed-race Asian-American girl.

The series also stars Kathleen Rose Perkins as Dr. Clara Hannon, Jason Scott Lee as Benny Kamealoha, Matthew Sato as Kai Kamealoha, Wes Tian as Brian Patrick Kamealoha, Emma Meisel as Steph, Mapuana Makia as Noelani, and Jeffrey Bowyer-Chapman as Charles. Feast Your Eyes on These Delicious Details from Remy’s Ratatouille Adventure and the France Pavilion Expansion at EPCOT

By Jocelyn Buhlman

We’re less than a month away from the opening of Remy’s Ratatouille Adventure at EPCOT, as part of the kickoff to the Walt Disney World Resort 50th anniversary celebration. While we still have to wait until October 1 before we can shrink down to the size of Chef Remy and go on a thrilling chase through Gusteau’s restaurant, there are plenty of details to discover in the expansion that nearly doubles the size of the existing France pavilion. Our friends at Disney Parks blog revealed some delicious details and Easter eggs today that Pixar fans will definitely want to spot on their next visit to EPCOT, and we’ve rounded up some of our favorites here.

Discovery of hidden details is just a step away—literally! Take a look on the ground in the France pavilion to spot these manhole covers featuring Remy himself. This design pays homage to the scene in Ratatouille where Remy makes his fateful arrival in Paris via the sewers.

Remy’s Ratatouille Adventure

If you need more clues to finding hidden details, you don’t need to “wine” about it—we’ll help you spot this tasty nod to food critic Anton Ego hidden in a storefront nearby—another fun shoutout to the film…

Remy’s Ratatouille Adventure

Travel in Pixar style—or, at least pose for a very Pixar picture! Chef Skinner’s motorbike and Colette’s scooter are parked nearby, providing a perfect photo opportunity for Ratatouille fans.

Remy’s Ratatouille Adventure

Here’s a “squeak peek” at one more hidden detail—you might have noticed that the railing and cast-iron benches in the new mini-land seem to swirl into rat-like shapes. Your eyes aren’t playing tricks on you! The designs are inspired by Remy and his pals and hint at the world of Chef Remy that awaits you in the expanded pavilion.

Remy’s Ratatouille Adventure opens at EPCOT on October 1. Stay tuned to D23.com for more details as they are announced.

Read an Exclusive Excerpt from What Once Was Mine, a Twist on the Tale of Tangled

By the D23 Team

The Twisted Tales anthology series of books has been putting unique spins on classic Disney tales since the first book debuted in 2015. The series has asked questions like, “What if Aladdin never found the lamp?” or “What if Anna and Elsa never knew each other?” Now, the Twisted Tales series is getting tangled up in a new story, this time asking, “What if Rapunzel’s mother drank a potion from the wrong flower?” In the film Tangled, Rapunzel’s mom uses the Sundrop flower to heal herself and deliver Rapunzel as a healthy child—albeit, a healthy child with magical healing powers! In this twist on the story, Rapunzel’s mother mistakenly uses the Moondrop flower instead. She and her child are both still healthy, but Rapunzel is born with silver hair and harmful powers—powers that lead to her being locked away for the safety of the kingdom!

Rapunzel does not leave her tower for eighteen years—until, one day, she decides to flee so she can finally see the beautiful, floating lights that appear every year on her birthday. Her escape is aided by faces both familiar and new: Flynn Rider and a would-be outlaw named Gina join her on the unexpected adventure.

The book hits shelves September 7, but you can read an exclusive excerpt of What Once Was Mine by Liz Braswell now:

“We’ll hang out here for a while,” Gina said. But her eyes glanced quickly to Flynn, to see what the more experienced adventurer would do.

He shrugged “I don’t have any pressing appointments anywhere. Though I do need to visit the local branch of my bank and make a quick withdrawal at some point.”

Ha-ha, Rapunzel thought, unconsciously grasping her bag more tightly, feeling the edges of the crown. If he only knew!

“ …And maybe you can tell me what this is all about. Why you need me, what exactly is going on.”

He sat down on a lichen-covered stone that tilted at an uneasy angle. Then he smiled and raised an eyebrow at Rapunzel… which made her feel uneasy.

His eyes were light, light brown like the dark honey that came at the end of the summer when the sumac and serious bushes bloomed. His eyebrows were heavy and expressive but didn’t overwhelm his face. His mouth kept pulling to one side in that smile… there was something a little fake about it, but also something a little endearing. Like he was trying very hard to be suave and mysterious. And didn’t realize how obvious it was.

“Hey,” Gina said loudly, interrupting Rapunzel’s train of not-really-thought. “Man wants a story.”

“Right. So.” Rapunzel cleared her head and took a deep breath. “Once upon a time, in a lonely tower in the middle of the woods, a girl…”

“Who’s this?” Flynn asked.

“Me,” Rapunzel said, exasperated.

“Wait, you lived in that freakish plague tower?”

“Yes! Are you even listening? I and my mom lived there… well, she lived there more when I was younger. Now it’s mostly me. Also, there was no plague,” she added. “Those signs were put there to keep people away, I think.”

“You lived by yourself in a tower your whole life?” It could have come out sounding sarcastic, or disbelieving… but there was a note of genuine horror in Flynn’s tone. “Like a prisoner?”

She started to say no, but stopped: she had been literally sent to the tower for her crimes. “Kind of. This is the first time I’ve ever been down. I mean—outside.”

“Whoa,” Gina said.

Rapunzel didn’t like the looks of pity on their faces. She had been happy there, mostly, and it was all for everyone’s good. There was nothing to pity her for.

Anyway, it was all pretty much the same, same things every day, same things out the window every season, except that every year around now, beautiful golden lights float up into the sky from somewhere northwest of here.”

“You mean the lantern thing they do for the dead princess?” Gina and Flynn asked at the same time.

“Jinx!” they both immediately said.

“Buymeapint,” they shouted at the same time, pointing at each other. Then they began laughing.

“Wait,” Rapunzel said, completely mystified. She didn’t not like the way her two new friends were becoming friends. But she didn’t love it either. “Lanterns? That float?”

“Yeah, the little candles in the paper lantern make them rise up into the air,” Flynn said with a shrug. “They do it every year to commemorate the death of the queen’s only child.”

“Oh. That’s… sad.”

All those years, all the things Rapunzel imagined the floating lights to be. She knew they weren’t stars, because they didn’t stay; she knew they weren’t meteors or comets, because they went up, not down. Never did she guess it was a man-made phenomenon—well known, at that. And for such a sad reason! Not a very joyous marker of her birthday week after all.

“Well,” she said aloud. “I want to see them. And I want you to guide me there,” she added, to Flynn.

“I could totally take you to see the lanterns!” Gina protested. “You don’t need this guy.”

“Absolutely true,” Flynn agreed. “You don’t. This girl can take you. Afraid I’m not on good terms with the kingdom at this moment.”

“What’d you steal this time?” Gina asked interestedly.

“A crown. Nice one, too. Anyway, I’m not going anywhere near that place. And also, there’s a lot of other things on my plate right now. The Stabbingtons are after me… I have to line up a buyer…  Really, it’s not a good time.”

“You haven’t even asked what I’ll pay you,” Rapunzel said innocently.

“You don’t have enough,” Flynn promised. Then he turned to Gina and said in a theatrical whisper, “This is where she offers her necklace, or a bracelet, or some other rich girl trinket I couldn’t pawn even if I wanted…”

“How about a crown?” Rapunzel suggested.

Flynn grew very, very still.

“Uh-oh,” Gina said with a wicked grin.

“What, um—what crown?” Flynn asked casually.

“The one that you stole. The one that the Stabbingtons want back. The one that you hid, rather obviously, in a tree hollow,” Rapunzel said smugly, crossing her arms. “Diamonds, pearls, about my size… You know, that crown?”

“That’s my crown! Give it back! I stole it fair and square!” Flynn cried, leaping up.

“You mean you stole it from the castle, or you stole it from the Stabbingtons?” Gina asked interestedly.

“Doesn’t matter,” Flynn said, crossing his arms and setting his jaw childishly. “It’s mine now.”

“Well, no, it’s mine,” Rapunzel said. “At least until you take me to see the lanterns, and home again. Then it’s yours.”

“You must have seen me hide it! In the tree!”

“Déduction très brillante,” Rapunzel said archly.

“Really??” Gina asked, throwing her hands in the air—a lot like Mother Gothel when she was playacting exasperated anger. “You’re paying him a whole crown to take you to see

the stupid lights?”

“Well, you knew I didn’t have anything to pay you with,” Rapunzel protested.

“You have a crown,” Gina shouted.

“But it’s not yours,” Rapunzel said.

“See?” Flynn nodded his head. “You do get it.”

“I mean,” Rapunzel added, “I figured this crown would be worth a lot more to the guy who originally stole it and is being chased, than, you know, just anyone.”

Gina gave her a look.

“It’s a crown,” she pointed out. “Apparently one with diamonds and pearls. You could hire everyone at the Snuggly Duckling ten times over for that.”

“But the wanted posters implied that he’s dangerous, and a fugitive, and wily, and just the sort of antihero I need to protect people from my h—I mean, me.” Rapunzel dug into her satchel—being very careful not to make any clinking noises around the crown—and pulled out the now very folded poster. “Sorry, Gina. I just didn’t know about you.”

“No one does,” Gina mumbled, kicking a stone.

“No way,” Flynn swore, tearing the poster from Rapunzel’s hand. “They got my nose wrong again. This is like the fifth time. What do I have to do, pose for the royal guard?”

He held it up to his face and tried to copy the expression.

“Stop complaining,” Gina snapped. “‘Aw, I’m soooo famous that they print up soooo many different pictures of my face, getting them wrong.’ Geez, tough life.”

“All right, all right, I’ll do it,” Flynn said with a forced, world-weary sigh, ignoring Gina completely. “But only because my life is in danger and I really need that crown.”

“And I get a share,” Gina said.

“Why do you get anything?” Flynn demanded. “You’re not taking the lady to see the lanterns.”

“I led her to you. And I saved your life.”

Gina and Flynn glared at each other.

Rapunzel now found herself wishing that her new friends were where they’d been five minutes ago, when they had been full of nothing but compliments and congratulations for each other.

“All right,” Flynn said, rolling his eyes. “A share. I’m such a softie.”

“Yes!” Gina whispered a little too loudly, pumping her fist in victory.

Rapunzel wanted to ask exactly what a share of a solid crown meant exactly (a single diamond? A broken-off flourish?) but decided that since the two were now working together to get her to where she wanted to go, she wasn’t going to complicate things by bringing it up.

She was finally going to get to see the lanterns, and nothing could possibly go wrong.

Exploring Shang-Chi’s Ties to the Larger MCU

By Zach Johnson

Marvel Studios’ Shang-Chi and The Legend of The Ten Rings is an origin story that blazes across the big screen with never-before-seen, mind-blowing action, stunning visuals, and the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s signature blend of heart and humor. And although this marks the first time Shang-Chi has appeared onscreen since his Marvel Comics debut in 1973, it’s not the first time the shadowy Ten Rings organization has popped up in the MCU.

In fact, the Ten Rings organization was behind the plot to kidnap Tony Stark (Disney Legend Robert Downey Jr.) in 2008’s Iron Man—the very film that turned the genius, billionaire, playboy, philanthropist into a bonafide Super Hero and, in turn, launched the MCU. The person behind the Ten Rings organization was deceptively introduced in 2013’s Iron Man 3 in the form of Iron Man’s archenemy, The Mandarin, who debuted in Marvel Comics in 1964, a decade before Shang-Chi. In the film it was revealed that the person masquerading as the Mandarin was actually an actor named Trevor Slattery (Ben Kingsley), hired by the secret leader of the Ten Rings to impersonate him and broadcast his agenda.

shang-chi

“We talked about when to bring the person behind the Ten Rings organization to the screen, and we wanted to do it when we felt we could do the character justice and really showcase the complexity of the character—and that’s what fun about the MCU at this stage,” says Kevin Feige, producer and president of Marvel Studios. “We can make a film like Shang-Chi and The Legend of The Ten Rings and introduce a brand-new hero to the world, but the subtitle actually connects it back to the very beginning of the MCU, which opens the door to exploring the Ten Rings organization and who is really behind it.”

Kingsley reprises his role in Shang-Chi and The Legend of The Ten Rings, coming into contact with Shang-Chi (Simu Liu), Katy (Awkwafina), and Xialing (Meng’er Zhang). We won’t spoil the circumstances of how that happens—you’ll have to see the film when it opens in theaters on Friday, September 3—but he plays an integral role in their mission.

In Shang-Chi and The Legend of The Ten Rings, audiences will learn the history of the real person who leads the Ten Rings: Xu Wenwu (Tony Leung), Shang-Chi’s father. The power of the actual Ten Rings has allowed Wenwu to build the Ten Rings criminal organization.

Trevor isn’t the only familiar face who pops up in Shang-Chi and The Legend of The Ten Rings. After Shang-Chi is attacked in San Francisco, he and Katy travel to Macau to warn his sister, Xialing, that danger is heading her way. Once there, they learn Xialing has made a name for herself as owner of the Golden Daggers Club, an underground fighting ring.

The first cage match they see is between Abomination, last seen onscreen in 2008’s The Incredible Hulk, and Wong (Benedict Wong), last seen onscreen in 2019’s Avengers: Endgame. Abomination may have immense strength, but Wong is a master of the mystic arts who deftly uses portals to redirect Abomination’s own punch back at him. We won’t spoil who wins the match… but you can bet this won’t be the last time Shang-Chi sees the victor!

shang-chi

Shang-Chi and The Legend of The Ten Rings is an origin story that sets up the titular character for a promising future in Phase Four of the MCU. Phase Four features both known characters, such as Doctor Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch), Spider-Man (Tom Holland), Captain Marvel (Brie Larson), and unknown ones, such as the Eternals.

Liu, for one, can’t wait to tell more stories as Shang-Chi. “I never thought in my wildest dreams that I would be here,” he says. “It’s been the most grueling thing I’ve ever done, but easily the most fulfilling. Whether it’s doing action sequences that have been choreographed by some of the most incredible action designers and martial artists in the world or acting opposite some of the most incredibly talented people that have ever graced the screen, every day felt like it was full of blessings. Many days I would go home and my entire body would be aching. But even then, I never lost sight of the fact that this is a historic, significant moment. To be a part of that is so incredible, and I can’t say enough how grateful I am for it.”
