It’s Family First in Disney’s Rise

By Andie Hagemann

“When one person in the family scores, we all score,” the Antetokounmpos exclaim in Disney’s new feature film Rise.

Giannis Antetokounmpo, nicknamed “The Greek Freak,” defied the odds to become one of the NBA’s top players—and in 2021, guided the Milwaukee Bucks to its first championship in 50 years. His meteoric rise includes all the facets of a Cinderella-like story… but that’s just part of it. Now everyone can discover the incredible true tale of the Antetokounmpo family, who produced the NBA’s first trio of championship-winning brothers, when Rise premieres Friday, June 24, exclusively on Disney+.

“When I first heard the story, it was very clear that we had an incredibly modern tale of triumph over adversity,” said screenwriter Arash Amel during a virtual press junket alongside the cast and the Antetokounmpo clan. “It’s a universal story of family and faith—and at the core of it, a story where immigration and cultural identity are at its roots.”

The Antetokounmpo family as depicted in Disney’s Rise stand huddled together in a brightly decorated gymnasium following Thanasis and Giannis’ basketball game. The brothers are wearing red jerseys with the team name emblazoned across the chest.

Rise begins with Charles (Dayo Okeniyi) and Veronica (also known as Vera) (Yetide Badaki) Antetokounmpo emigrating from Nigeria to Greece in search of a better life for their family’s future. Already faced with the difficult decision to leave their first-born son, Francis, with relatives in Nigeria to embark on the dangerous journey, the couple are threatened with deportation daily and struggle to obtain Greek citizenship. From selling souvenirs to tourists on the streets of Athens to working as a janitor and caregiver to the elderly, Charles and Vera did whatever they could to keep their dream alive and provide for their five sons. Once Giannis and Thanasis Antetokounmpo—portrayed by real-life brothers Uche and Ral Agada, respectively—discover their aptitude for basketball, the family’s luck changes.

Despite discovering the sport later than most, the brothers realize the opportunities the sport can create. Giannis entered the NBA Draft in 2013 as a long-shot prospect, and was selected in the first round by Milwaukee. But the remarkable story doesn’t end there; Giannis and Thanasis were both on the 2021 NBA Championship-winning Milwaukee Bucks squad, and brother Kostas scored his own NBA Championship ring in 2020 with the Los Angeles Lakers. (Another brother, Alex, recently played in the NBA G League.)

Thanasis (Ral Agada) and Giannis Antetokounmpo (Uche Agada) stand side by side while looking on at a group of boys playing basketball in park in Disney’s Rise.

While Rise follows a family of basketball prodigies, Amel clarifies that both sports fans and non-sports fans alike can appreciate this film. “The movie is a story of family first, and a sports movie second,” he said. “Part of the challenge was how to maintain that family story and not allow the sports aspect to be overwhelming. It’s often the easy way to follow the classical structure of a sports movie—but when I write something, it has to be extremely personal, and the story of family was what spoke to me right at the beginning.”

Initially, Rise was titled Greek Freak and focused solely on Giannis; however, he was adamant the story should be about his entire family—not just his personal success. “This journey is not about me, it’s about every single person in here,” said Giannis, as he gestured to his family. “Actually, Kostas came up with the name Rise. We started from nothing and together as a family we keep on rising together, so I think it’s a very fitting name.”

Veronica shared how honored she felt to have her family’s story shared with the masses, but admitted she was emotional reliving a few of the difficult moments depicted in the film; “It’s powerful,” added Thanasis. “You tell your kids, ‘You don’t understand how we grew up,’ but now they can see it on the screen. I hope after seeing the movie everyone feels blessed for what they have and motivated to chase their dreams.”

Giannis admitted to an all-new appreciation for his mom’s unwavering faith after seeing the movie and reliving moments that tested the family’s spirit: “I went to my mom and said, ‘Mom, you’ve never lost hope; that’s insane; I would have lost hope two years into living in Greece,’” he explained. “She put us in school, had us out there selling stuff with her, joining a team and playing basketball—but she never lost hope throughout all of it.”

And when asked about what she hopes audiences will get out of the film, Veronica said, “For people to remain faithful, humble, disciplined, and never lose hope.”

Real-Life Stories from the World Premiere of Disney’s Rise

By Andie Hagemann and Sarah Sterling

Disney’s Rise is not your typical sports movie. This brand-new live-action film, debuting Friday, June 24, exclusively on Disney+, chronicles the unwavering faith and resilience of the Antetokounmpo family despite at times insurmountable odds, starting with young brothers growing up in Greece. The Antetokounmpos are the first family to produce a trio of NBA championship-winning brothers in the history of the league. Giannis and Thanasis helped bring the Milwaukee Bucks the franchise’s first title in 50 years during the 2020-21 season, and Kostas was a member of the Los Angeles Lakers’ 2019-2020 championship team. Another brother, Alex, recently played in the NBA G League.

The Antetokounmpo brothers (Giannis, Alex, Kostas, and Thanasis) pose with the young actors who portray them in “Rise”: McColm Cephas Jr., Aaron Kingsley Adetola, and Chinua Baraka Payne

The Antetokounmpos celebrated the release of their biopic alongside the film’s cast and crew at the world premiere on Wednesday, June 22, on The Walt Disney Studios lot. “I feel excited,” Giannis told D23. “It’s a pleasure to be here tonight, working with Disney to share our journey, our story.”

Producer Bernie Goldmann stands in between Giannis Antetokounmpo (left) and his mother Veronica Antetokounmpo (right). Giannis is wearing an olive green suit and sunglasses. Bernie has black square frame glasses and a blue blazer. Veronica has on a sparkly silver and white dress.

Cast and crew alike remarked that this story could only be told by Disney—a company synonymous with encouraging the young and young at heart to chase their dreams, no matter how crazy they may seem to others. “This is a story that is made for the Disney brand,” said Bernie Goldmann, one of producers of Rise. “It’s everything that Disney stands for, which is people who go through great adversity, work hard to overcome it, and are ultimately rewarded for all of the work and hard times that they went through.”

Giannis admitted he was emotional seeing his family’s incredible journey on the big screen for the first time, adding that reliving tough moments put into perspective how far the family has come from its humble beginnings. “Once I saw all the things we’ve been through, I was like, ‘We need to do more,’” he added. “We need to accomplish more. We need to keep on going. We can’t stop now.”

Ral Agada is wearing a blue and black patterned suit. Next to him is his brother, Uche Agada, wearing an all black paisley patterned suit. The pair stand with their hands clasped in front of them with a “Rise x XBOX” background behind them.

Giannis and Thanasis are portrayed by real-life brothers Uche and Ral Agada, respectively. The pair shared that they felt comfortable embarking on the journey together, much like what the brothers (and family as a whole) experience in the film. “When I’m standing next to my brother, there’s no nerves,” Ral said. “Playing a brother? With my brother? It just takes a whole element out of it. We don’t have to fake that part. We don’t have to act that part.”

Inside the Electric World Premiere of Thor: Love and Thunder

By Zach Johnson

Thursday night was filled with love, thunder, and a sea of stars!

The world premiere of Marvel Studios’ Thor: Love and Thunder was held at the El Capitan Theatre in Hollywood, with cast members Chris Hemsworth, Natalie Portman, Christian Bale, Tessa Thompson, Jaimie Alexander, Chris Pratt, Karen Gillan, and Kieron L. Dyer walking the red carpet alongside director, writer, and star Taika Waititi. Special guests included Kat Dennings, Luke Hemsworth, Xochitl Gomez, and Joe Russo.

“I’ve done eight films now as Thor, and each time it gets more and more exciting,” Hemsworth told reporters on the red carpet. “This was no exception. It was amazing.”

Thor: Love and Thunder finds the God of Thunder (Hemsworth) on a journey of self-discovery. But his progress is stalled by Gorr the God Butcher (Bale), who wants to kill the gods. So, Thor enlists the help of King Valkyrie (Thompson), Korg (Waititi) and ex-girlfriend Jane Foster (Portman), who—to his surprise—inexplicably wields his magical hammer, Mjolnir, as the Mighty Thor. Together, they embark upon a harrowing cosmic adventure to uncover the mystery of Gorr’s revenge and stop him... before it’s too late!

The film marks Portman’s long-awaited return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) following her last appearance in 2011’s Thor: The Dark World. “It's such a joy to be part of this,” she said. “It was such a fun movie to make, and you can really tell that everyone's having a great time on screen; I think audiences will, too. It's amazing to feel everyone's passion for these movies and to understand how much it means [to them].”

Chris Hemsworth, wearing a blue suit and a white shirt, puts his arm around actress Natalie Portman, wearing a one-shoulder beaded gown and diamond earrings. To her left is actor Christian Bale, who wears an all-black look at the world premiere of Marvel Studios’ Thor: Love and Thunder.

Indeed. Bale, who makes his MCU debut in the film, couldn’t help but marvel at the cosplayers who dressed up for the special event. “There's some serious commitment with the costumes that I've seen here today,” the actor said. “It's a lovely thing to see just how devoted [the fans] are to it. I’m very grateful to have been invited to join this.”

For Thompson, premiering Thor: Love and Thunder at the El Captain Theatre was a full circle moment. “My whole family is here tonight, save for like two members,” she said. “I grew up in Los Angeles and my dad would take me to this cinema. It was always a big deal when we got to see movies here, so I can't believe I am now in a movie here.”

Thor: Love and Thunder opens in U.S. theaters July 8, 2022, and advance tickets are now available. Before then, enjoy out-of-this-world moments from the world premiere:

A still from Walt Disney Animation Studios’ Strange World. The Clade family is inside a vehicle of some kind; there are five humans and one dog, and all the humans are wearing muted colors, mostly in greens, browns, and blues. One is wearing goggles on top of their head. All are looking out the windshield of the vehicle, with smiles on their faces.

Voice Cast Announced for Walt Disney Animation Studios’ Strange World

At the recent Annecy International Animated Film Festival, Walt Disney Animation Studios presented an exclusive look at over 10 minutes of footage from Strange World, its next animated feature. Set for release on November 23, the original action-adventure journeys deep into an uncharted and treacherous land where fantastical creatures await the legendary Clades, a family of explorers whose differences threaten to topple their latest—and by far—most crucial mission.

The studio also revealed key members of the voice cast joining previously announced actor Jake Gyllenhaal, who lends his voice to Searcher Clade—a farmer who finds himself thrust into an adventure in a strange world. He’s joined by Dennis Quaid as Jaeger Clade, Searcher’s larger-than-life explorer father; Jaboukie Young-White as Ethan Clade, Searcher’s 16 year-old son who longs for adventure beyond his father’s farm while also navigating a school crush; Gabrielle Union as Meridian Clade, a pilot and natural leader, mom to Ethan, and wife of Searcher; and Lucy Liu as Callisto Mal, the head of the land of Avalonia and the leader of the exploration into the strange world.

Stay tuned for more about Strange World in the coming months…

Inside 1923 restaurant on board the Disney Wish, several families are sitting at tables chatting and smiling. There is bright lighting overhead, and seen around the room are displays depicting Walt Disney’s history in animation. There is the usual restaurant accoutrement on the tables—plates, silverware, glasses.

Celebrating Walt Disney’s Legacy Aboard the Disney Wish

Unless you’ve only very recently come back from a multi-year sojourn in a place with zero internet, you know that the Disney Wish—the newest Disney Cruise Line ship—is just a few weeks’ away from embarking on its maiden voyage. The ship, a celebration of nearly 100 years of Disney magic, will provide guests with a one-of-a-kind vacation including all manner of enchanting experiences inspired by Disney, Marvel, Star Wars, and Pixar stories and characters.

Recently, the good folks over at Disney Parks Blog shared a first look at two dining venues dedicated to the rich history of The Walt Disney Company and Walt Disney himself: 1923 and Marceline Market. Named for the year The Walt Disney Company was founded—of course, the same reason we’re called D23!—1923 is an elegant celebration of the company’s legacy, paying homage to the golden age of animation and offering a tasteful tribute to its Californian heritage. The restaurant, as seen in the image above, combines Hollywood glamour with Disney magic and features two dining rooms named after Walt and Roy Disney. The rooms are adorned with more than 1,000 drawing, props, and other unique artifacts, including a look at the evolution of Disney animation from Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs to Frozen 2. Guests will enjoy sophisticated dishes designed with families in mind and inspired by the fusion of cultural flavors found throughout the Golden State. The diverse menu of dishes is inspired by the flavors of California, and incorporates a blend of Asian, European, and South American cuisines.

Meanwhile, Marceline Market (named for Walt Disney’s early childhood hometown in Missouri) is a stylish food hall inspired by popular marketplaces around the world. The restaurant includes both indoor and outdoor seating with amazing views of the ocean, and offers casual service for breakfast and lunch, followed by table-service dining at dinnertime with entrees cooked to order.

The Antetokounmpo family gathers on a basketball court following Giannis and Thanasis’ game in Disney’s Rise.

Rise—Friday, June 24, on Disney+
This inspiring story of triumph over adversity is not your average sports movie. After emigrating from Nigeria to Greece, Charles and Vera Antetokounmpo (Dayo Okeniyi and Yetide Badaki, respectively) struggled to survive, taking a slew of jobs to provide for their five children while living under the daily threat of deportation. Their sons Giannis (Uche Agada) and Thanasis (Ral Agad) eventually discovered their aptitude for basketball; ultimately, Giannis entered the 2013 NBA Draft as a long shot prospect and was selected by the Milwaukee Bucks—where he (and, incredibly, Thanasis!) later earned the franchise’s first title in 50 years.

The cast of Disney Channel’s BUNK’D stands in front of a doorway to a dwelling; above the door is a wooden sign that reads “Kikiwaka Ranch.” Miranda May, who stars as Lou, stands in the middle of the group and is wearing a turquoise jacket with fringe and jeans.

BUNK’D—Friday, June 24, at 7:30 p.m. ET/PT on Disney Channel
Prepare for an episode full of hysterical hijinks as Destiny (Mallory James Mahoney) learns first aid, and Winnie (Shiloh Verrico) plots a risky stunt. Will they both be successful—or should they keep their day jobs?

In a still from The Art of Racing in the Rain, Denny (Milo Ventimiglia) is driving a convertible red sports car with the number “39” emblazoned on the hood, with his dog in the passenger seat.

The Art of Racing in the Rain—Friday, June 24, at 9:50 p.m. ET/PT on FXM
The film follows Denny Swift (Milo Ventimiglia), a Formula One race car driver who applies skills from the track to his everyday life. Outside of his high-octane career, Denny boasts three loves he cares deeply about: his wife, his young daughter, and his dog… who wants to be reincarnated as a human.

: A still from an episode of Disney Channel’s The Ghost and Molly McGee; four humans are in the foreground, and a blue-hued ghost is in the background. They’re standing in front of a window and shutters of a house.

The Ghost and Molly McGee—Saturday, June 25, at 9:30 a.m. ET/PT on Disney Channel
This all-new episode follows the McGees’ struggle to make ends meet after a costly hospital visit leaves them nearly broke. Then, Molly (voiced by Ashly Burch) hilariously pretends that the house is normal when a realtor visits, despite the mischief Scratch (voiced by Dana Synder) incites to protect the house.

The cast of Disney’s Summer Magic Quest poses with Mickey and Minnie Mouse in front of EPCOT at Walt Disney World Resort

Disney’s Summer Magic Quest—Sunday, June 26, at 7 p.m. ET/PT on Disney Channel
The third installment of Disney’s popular Magic Quest specials returns with ZOMBIES 3 stars Meg Donnelly, Pearce Joza, Kylee Russell, and Matt Cornett competing in all-new challenges at EPCOT at Walt Disney World Resort. A donation to the Special Olympics will be made in honor of the quest’s winners!

10 Great Sports Movies You Can Stream Now

By Alison Stateman

Sports fans—and those seeking a compelling true story—will be treated to the extraordinary tale of NBA superstar Giannis Antetokounmpo and his family when the Disney+ Original movie Rise debuts exclusively on the streamer on June 24. The film is based on the inspiring experiences of the Antetokounmpo family, which produced the first trio of brothers to become NBA champions in the history of the league. (Check out the exclusive trailer here!)

To celebrate the film’s highly anticipated release, we’ve rounded up some of the best sports movies and documentaries available to watch (or watch again!) on Disney+, Hulu, and ESPN+. From current documentaries to classic dramas and even a legendary animated offering, we’ve got you covered.

A still from Double Dribble shows two of the Goofy look-alikes, with one holding a basketball, with the other Goofy requesting it.

Double Dribble (1946) – Available on Disney+
While most sports movies immortalize and celebrate the virtues of sport, the Disney animated short Double Dribble skewers sports’ idiosyncrasies by depicting a college basketball game between U.U. and its thousands of assembled fans, and P.U., who only has one fan in the arena, Goofy. The game, played by Goofy look-alikes, proceeds in ludicrous fashion, spotlighting the cheating players and the semi-blind referee missing all the calls. We won’t reveal who wins this titanic struggle, but players’ names—including Hannah and Lounsbery—were inside jokes and based on the short’s director, Disney Legend Jack Hannah, and animator, Disney Legend and member of the “Nine Old Men,” John Lounsbery.

Emilio Estevez, who stars in The Mighty Ducks, stands in sunglasses and office attire with the cast of relative newcomers try to look tough.

The Mighty Ducks (1992) – Available on Disney+
Quack! Quack! Quack! Sports fans love underdogs (under-ducks?), and on October 1, 1992, Emilio Estevez and a cast of relatively unknown kid-actors hit the ice in the ultimate underdog story. The Mighty Ducks was the surprise hit of 1992, launching a trio of films, an animated TV series, and even a professional hockey team, the Anaheim Ducks. Estevez stars as hard-hitting trial lawyer Gordon Bombay, who gets in trouble with the law and is slapped with a community service assignment of coaching a disastrously bad kids’ hockey team. And although Bombay’s past experience as a win-at-all-cost youth-league hockey player (and lawyer) seem, at first, to be exactly what this losing team needs, he soon learns that some things are more important than winning. The film launched the careers of many of its young actors, including Joshua Jackson, who went on to star in Dawson’s Creek, Fringe, Urban Legend, and Cruel Intentions; Aaron Schwartz, who also starred in the film Heavyweights; and Elden Henson, who became a fan favorite in Marvel’s Daredevil and The Hunger Games: Mockingjay — Part 1 and Part 2. The success of the film led to the release of more Mighty Ducks fun, also available on Disney+.

Beloved comedian John Candy stands with four actors playing members of the Jamaica national bobsled team in a snowy scene. The bobsled members look miserable and cold.

Cool Runnings (1993) – Available on Disney+
The idea of a competitive Jamaica bobsled team has the makings of comedy and movie gold, but the fact that it’s based on a true story makes this film a true family gem. Giving the film extra poignancy is the fact that it also happens to be one of the final onscreen appearances of beloved comedy legend John Candy—and the last movie released during his lifetime. Based on the true story of the Jamaica national bobsleigh team’s debut in competition at the 1988 Winter Olympics in Calgary, Alberta, Canada, the film landed clearly in the hearts of audiences and critics alike. As can be expected, pulling together a team from the warm-weather paradise of Jamaica to compete at the highest level of winter-weather sports is no easy task, but Candy’s character, Irving Blitzer, is up for the challenge, even if the world thinks it can’t be done. We won’t spoil the ending for you, but rest assured that the film never disappoints and is about a whole lot more than coming in first place—and its heart-stealing final scenes will have you hitting rewind again and again.

Denzel Washington, playing coach Herman Boone, in Remember the Titans stands smiling in a red polo and black shorts with a whistle around his neck, as football players dressed in white uniforms practice.

Remember the Titans (2000) – Available on Disney+
When young Black coach Herman Boone (Denzel Washington), new to Alexandria, Virginia, is hired as head coach of the T.C. Williams High Titans over Bill Yost, a white man with several years’ seniority, the pair learns to work with each other and discovers they have a lot more in common than just football. One of the best movies about football ever made, Remember the Titans features realistic gridiron action, an unforgettable performance by Denzel Washington, an impossibly undersized outside linebacker played by Ryan Gosling, and a moving storyline that will have you shouting “Remember the Titans!” as the end credits roll.

Dennis Quaid as Jim Morris, stands in the middle of his high school classroom mid-instruction as several students look on.

The Rookie (2002) – Available on Disney+
Director John Lee Hancock (The Blind Side, Saving Mr. Banks) hits another one out of the park with The Rookie, which tells the story of Jimmy Morris (as an adult played by Dennis Quaid), who is robbed of a professional career in baseball by injury and who is now a high school teacher and baseball coach in Big Lake, Texas. His team makes a deal with Morris; if they win the district championship, he has to try out with a big-league team. When the team goes from worst to first, Morris gets that try out, dazzles the Tampa Bay Devil Rays with his fastball, and earns a minor-league contract. The Rookie remains a powerful story about never giving up on your dreams (and Dennis Quaid looks like he can really pitch!).

A stirring mid-action scene showcases three members of the 1980 Winter Olympics men’s hockey team on the ice with the puck in their possession.

Miracle (2004) – Available on Disney+
Disney Legend Kurt Russell plays hockey coach Herb Brooks, who at the 1980 Winter Olympics in Lake Placid, New York, fielded a ragtag squad of elite wannabes who would eventually go on to win the gold medal in men’s hockey. To do so, they had to vanquish a juggernaut Soviet Union team, gold medal winners in the previous four Winter Olympics—a squad still thought of today as the greatest international hockey team of all time. If you were old enough to watch this event unfold live on television (ahem), the movie always sparks warm nostalgia; if you never saw the game, you have to watch this retelling of one of the most miraculous sports events of all time.

Shia LeBeouf lines up his shot with his young golf caddy in The Greatest Game, a movie that explores the true story of Francis Ouimet, a former caddy, who won the U.S. Open at age 20.

The Greatest Game Ever Played (2005) – Available on Disney+
Golf movies hold a special place in the hearts of any human being who has had the courage—or stupidity—to pick up a mashie, a niblick, or a mashie-niblick (i.e., golf clubs). There’s something so spiritual about the sport, so enigmatic (ask former pro golfer David Duval, who went from No. 1 in the world and winning the Open Championship in 2001 to never winning a tournament again) that fans love to watch golf movies, if only to understand what makes the sport so intriguing, beautiful, and utterly frustrating. The Greatest Game Ever Played is one of those special films that golfers everywhere love to talk about. It tells the true story of Francis Ouimet (Shia LaBeouf), a former caddy, who won the U.S. Open at age 20, assisted by his 10-year-old caddy, Eddie. It’s inspiring enough to make you pick up the old clubs—or forget that dumb idea and sit back and watch the movie again!

Basketball players from the first all-Black team that won the NCAA champ on the court in their game jerseys take the court in this scene from Glory Road.

Glory Road (2006) – Available on Disney+
Just about anyone who loves the sport and didn’t attend the school pretty much dislikes the University of Kentucky basketball team. They have this somewhat obnoxious habit of winning almost every game they play. That gives Glory Road, not that it needs it, an extra bounce of likeability, because it tells the inspiring true story of perennial underdog the Texas Western Miners, coached by passionately dedicated coach Dan Haskins (played with relentless conviction by Josh Lucas), who in 1966, fielded an all-Black team that won the NCAA tournament, vanquishing the all-white University of Kentucky Wildcats. It’s an inspiring story that’s as relevant today as it was in 1966.

Dream On (2022) – Available on ESPN+
Part of the acclaimed Peabody and Emmy®-award winning 30 for 30 series, the documentary examines the 1996 USA Women’s Dream Team and the 14-month odyssey that would forever change the landscape of women’s athletics. At the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta, the USA women’s basketball team dominated the competition. Eight wins. Zero losses. Gold medals around their necks. They made it look easy. But that’s barely the start of the real story of the Women’s Dream Team. Because the truth about how the team came together, and what they endured on their grueling 14-month road leading up to the Olympics, is one of the most unlikely and complicated tales told in sports history. Nothing less than the future of basketball was in their hands. If the ’96 team won and captured the hearts of fans, the NBA was prepared to launch the WNBA. If they failed, the league would scrap their plans. The film, which premiered on June 15, is available on ESPN+ along with the rest of the 30 for 30 library.

Fifty/50 Shorts Presented by Google (2022) – Available on ESPN/YouTube
The first project under ESPN’s W. Studios umbrella focuses on giving women athletes the recognition they deserve. W. Studios Fifty/50 Shorts Presented by Google encompasses five short films centered around the fight for women’s equality across the sports and cultural landscape. All helmed and executive produced by women, the films, which premiered on ESPN2 on June 1, are available to watch on ESPN’s YouTube page.

Be sure to tune into Disney+ on June 24 to catch the debut of Rise!

Disney’s Summer Magic Quest premieres Sunday, June 26, at 7 p.m. ET/PT on Disney Channel, and will be available to stream on Disney+ later this summer. For more on the special, enjoy our Q&A with director and executive producer Artur Spigel.

D23: What sets Disney’s Summer Magic Quest apart from the previous specials?
Artur Spigel (AS): This time, it’s a new park with new challenges, and new format to the show. For the first time ever, teams are going head-to-head as they make their way around EPCOT.

D23: What was it like to film this special at EPCOT for the first time?
AS: It’s a dream come true to be in the park at night and have this ultimate playground. It’s a really magical experience because the park is still alive at night—there’s just no guests there. You can be in awe of all the amazing aspects and energy that goes into this incredible location. EPCOT in general has always been one of my favorite parks. Honestly, the gift shop in Japan is one of my favorite places to shop ever! We were fortunate to shoot in the new Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind—it’s a great honor to work with Imagineering and be able to do that. It’s surreal that I get to do this for a living.

Meg Donnelly and Pearce Joza stand back-to-back in front of Starship Earth at EPCOT.

D23: How was it to work with the cast? Did the new format foster a natural competitive energy amongst them and/or play off each other?
AS: I think the unique aspect of Magic Quest versus ZOMBIES 3 is that they really get to be themselves; there’s no lines or scenes to memorize, and they get to compete against their co-stars. They have such an amazing relationship after working on the movies together, and now they get to play in the park.

D23: How did the idea for the series come about?
AS: It’s something I think a lot of us always dreamed of as a kid—being the only people at Walt Disney World. We’ve had the good fortune of working with Disney Parks and Yellow Shoes for about 17 years and have built trust in terms of how we handle Disney intellectual property and show the parks. We couldn’t do this without the folks at Disney Parks.

D23: This is Meg’s second time competing. How was it to work with her again? Do you think her experience gave her an advantage over her co-stars?
AS: Meg is an incredible actress, but she’s also an equally amazing person. She was so happy, and enthusiastic to be there. I don’t think there’s an advantage because the competition is real. They didn’t really know what they were getting into; there was no script, and they didn’t see any of the challenges ahead of time. I think she knew what it would take to have the endurance to make it all night, but she didn’t know anything specific, so it was up to her to deliver.

D23: You previously mentioned your love for the Japan Pavilion, but do you have a favorite attraction at EPCOT?
AS: For the longest time, I think my favorite attraction was Soarin’, but I will say that Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind is my new favorite. I love that franchise and it’s a whole new experience and different type of attraction—you’re not quite sure what’s happening, but you’re in the middle of this kind of intergalactic chase, and it really takes you somewhere else.

Kylee Russell and Matt Cornett stand back-to-back in front of Spaceship Earth at EPCOT

D23: What are you most excited for audiences to see in this special?
AS: Whenever we make a Magic Quest, I put myself in the shoes of all the kids at home who wish they could be there or wish they could be the talent. The thing I’m most excited about is to fulfill some wishes or allow some kids who imagine them in the shoes of a talent experiencing these games and playing along with them. One of the things that I love about working for Disney is we’re in the wish business. Whenever you can deliver that to an audience and make them imagine—that’s the part I love most, and I hope the audience feels that.

D23: Did your kids inspire any aspects of the series?
AS: [My kids] are a real-time focus group. I share cuts with them and just by seeing their reaction to the material I can see if something will work or not.

D23: Why should D23 fans watch Disney’s Summer Magic Quest?
AS: It’s Disney Parks and some amazing Disney characters presented in a way never seen before. We were able to do things on this show that no one’s ever been able to do.

Two holiday nighttime spectaculars are coming back this year! Believe… in Holiday Magic fireworks is a dazzling nighttime display featuring a medley of heartwarming holiday music, culminating with a magical snowfall in several areas of Disneyland park, including Main Street, U.S.A., near the Rivers of America, and in front of it’s a small world. World of Color – Season of Light will return to Paradise Bay at Disney California Adventure park, blending classic holiday songs with memorable moments from cherished Disney and Pixar movies, illuminating a wall of mist while fountains dance.

The fan-favorite seven-foot gingerbread house in the lobby of Disney’s Grand Californian Hotel & Spa will also return this holiday season. A new annual take on a replica of the hotel, this festive tradition takes months for a 25-member team to create.

During the holiday season, encounter Disney characters wearing their holiday finest; shop for the merriest of merchandise; and enjoy seasonal entertainment and décor in the parks, in the Downtown Disney District, and in the Hotels of the Disneyland Resort.

Wearing festive red and green holiday attire, Mickey Mouse, Peter Pan, Daisy Duck, Minnie Mouse, Pluto, Donald Duck, and Wendy wave at guests on Main Street, U.S.A., at Magic Kingdom at Walt Disney World Resort. Mickey is standing on the parade float in front of a trimmed Christmas tree, featuring twinkling rainbow lights, red bows, and a giant yellow star, while his friends make their way through the street. In the background, Cinderella Castle is illuminated in EARidescent colors as part of the Walt Disney World Resort’s 50th Anniversary Celebration.

In addition, Minnie Mouse will orchestrate a sparkling spectacle over Magic Kingdom park as a part of Minnie’s Wonderful Christmastime Fireworks. Full of holiday magic, the show will feature impressive castle projections, plus fireworks and seasonal music. And with his famous flying reindeer leading the way, Santa Claus will join Mickey and friends in the Mickey’s Once Upon a Christmastime Parade. Want something sweet? Guests can enjoy complimentary cookies and hot cocoa located throughout the park!

During Mickey’s Very Merry Christmas Party, holiday magic will once again transform the Jungle Cruise into the Jingle Cruise—and, as an exclusive treat for partygoers, Magic Kingdom attractions Space Mountain, Tomorrowland Speedway, Monsters Inc. Laugh Floor, and Mad Tea Party will receive holiday makeovers! Plus, denizens of the North Pole will drop by Cosmic Ray’s Starlight Café for an intergalactic dance party!

At Magic Kingdom, partygoers can dance the night away alongside Disney characters during an out-of-this-world holiday show, “A Totally Tomorrowland Christmas,” located on the Rockettower Plaza Stage. The fun will continue for young partygoers and for Disney Junior fans of all ages with the “Disney Junior Jingle Jam” at Storybook Circus.

In honor of the 50th Anniversary celebration, Mickey’s Very Merry Christmas Party attendees will discover three jolly new photo opportunities. Plus, guests will also receive a special 50th Anniversary commemorative keepsake, themed for the holidays.

Tickets for Mickey’s Very Merry Christmas Party are limited and may be purchased online beginning July 7, 2022. Guests of select Walt Disney World Resort hotels can begin purchasing tickets as early as June 30, 2022. Ticket prices will range from $149–$199 per person. During the Walt Disney World 50th Anniversary celebration, select theme park icons will continue to transform into Beacons of Magic, illuminating select nights with an EARidescent glow. And as a yuletide surprise, the magic will continue as each park celebrates the season with a rotation of unique heartwarming holiday-themed displays.

Santa Claus smiles wide and wears his signature red outfit, featuring white fur trim. He is standing a parade float and waving to guests at Walt Disney World Resort.

The holiday season will be an especially busy time for Santa as he makes special appearances throughout Walt Disney World Resort. Catch him cruising down Hollywood Boulevard in his red convertible at Disney’s Hollywood Studios during the Santa Claus Merry Motorcade and voyaging across the Discovery River as part of a festive flotilla at Disney’s Animal Kingdom. Santa will continue to spread the joyous spirit of the season during visits to Magic Kingdom and Disney Springs, where guests may have individual time to take photos and share their Christmas wishes. At EPCOT, Santa will join storytellers from around the world as a part of the EPCOT International Festival of the Holidays presented by AdventHealth, which will begin on November 25.

Speaking of EPCOT, the “Candlelight Processional”—a beloved tradition of heartwarming holiday performances at America Gardens Theatre—starts November 25. This season, the Guardians of the Galaxy will trade in their classic hits playlist for a mash-up of seasonal jams at Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind at EPCOT. Blast off to the sounds of an awesome holiday single, bringing joy to Xandar and Terra, too.

In addition, Disney’s Animal Kingdom will come alive with the return of a Merry Menagerie of winter animals realized in the form of life-size, artisan-sculpted puppets. At Disney’s Hollywood Studios, “For the First Time in Forever: A Frozen Sing-Along Celebration,” will add a festive finale featuring everyone’s favorite snowman, Olaf, and celebratory songs of the season. At Disney Springs, guests visiting Town Center will experience a magical snowfall, bringing the spirit of the North Pole to Central Florida.

Find Christmastime cheer in every corner of Walt Disney World with whimsical décor that creates a nostalgic and joyous atmosphere. The merriment extends to the Disney Springs Christmas Tree Stroll presented by AdventHealth, where elaborately themed Christmas trees will draw inspiration from beloved characters; and to resorts, where guests will encounter artisan-made gingerbread creations displayed in select locations. During this season of giving, guests can peruse new dedicated holiday collections at select shopping locations across Walt Disney World Resort, including Disney Springs.

Donald Duck, wearing a red hat and jacket with green trim and a large green bowtie, stands centerstage during the musical show “Let’s Sing Christmas!” at Videopolis in Discoveryland at Disneyland Paris. Donald is flanked by four carolers, each wearing festive, old-timey red and green attire, as they smile at the audience.

Disneyland Paris
