Sizing Up Into the Woods’ Live Action Actors With Their Animated Disney Cousins

Into the Woods is a modern twist on the beloved Brothers Grimm fairy tales, intertwining the plots of a few choice stories and exploring the consequences of the characters’ wishes and quests. The cast is a who’s who of Hollywood and will bring together a musical mash-up of fairy-tale characters. Walt Disney Studios recently released productions stills from the film with modern actors portraying characters from some of our favorite from classic tales and we couldn’t wait to see how they compared to their animated cousins!

New Collection of Ghoulishly Grand Goods Celebrates the Haunted Mansion

Serpents and spiders… tail of a rat. Call in the spirits, wherever they’re at!

This fall, Disney Parks is hosting an estate sale that you’ll be, shall we say, positively dying to attend when a new line of exclusive items celebrating the beloved Haunted Mansion arrives at Disneyland and Walt Disney World.

Haunted Mansion Merchandise
Disney Design Group creative manager Cody Reynolds spoke with D23 about the collection and some of the concept art behind the new merchandise—which pays homage to familiar characters and also shines a light on some smaller details that even the attraction’s most devoted fans might have missed.

Haunted Mansion Master Gracey Merchandise
“We really wanted to dive into the lore of the mansion,” Cody explains, acknowledging the unofficial legend of Master Gracey—to some, a name on a grave in the Haunted Mansion cemetery, but widely believed by others to be the master of the mansion. “We approached it as if Master Gracey was having an estate sale, so all of the merchandise is almost as if it could be at a giant estate sale the Haunted Mansion would be having.” Of course, the exteriors of the attraction differ from park to park, so Cody and the other artists opted to focus on the inside of the mansion and its eerie inhabitants.

Haunted Mansion Master Gracey Seal of Arms
The artists worked within a group of themes, or “art buckets,” that they used to categorize their designs. Much of the character-focused artwork falls into the “Happy Haunts” bucket.

Haunted Mansion Illustrations
“We really wanted to draw inspiration from what illustrations looked like at the time period of the Haunted Mansion. They were like that letterpress, pen-and-ink-ish shaky line, not a lot of color—as if there were a ghost illustrator in the Haunted Mansion,” Cody suggests. “How would he see the characters around him?” The artists were influenced by the art styling of Tim Burton and Edward Gorey—who in turn influenced Burton’s The Nightmare Before Christmas—and, of course, by Marc Davis’ original illustrations for the Haunted Mansion for Walt Disney Imagineering.

Haunted Mansion Hatbox Ghost and Leota, the Hitchhiking Ghosts Illustrations
The “Forever Haunted” bucket incorporates designs and elements that really speak to the overall Haunted Mansion experience. “The image with all the characters—you see the Hatbox Ghost and Leota, the Hitchhiking Ghosts—it really tells the full story of the mansion, kind of in a different way than we’ve ever done before,” Cody emphasizes.

Disneyland Haunted Mansion Skeleton Illustration
Cody’s favorite design can be found in this grouping. “The one with the skeleton—that’s actually my favorite design. One of the artists here did that and I love that it tricks the eye. When you look at it from a distance it’s a skull, although when you really look at it you see the Hatbox Ghost and how the gates form the eyes, and how the teeth are formed by the gravestones at the bottom.”

Disneyland Haunted Mansion From the Estate of Master Gracey Designs
The mansion itself—and its purported property owner—are the focus of “From the Estate of Master Gracey,” which includes a Gracey family crest and a three-story floor plan. “This isn’t a literal blueprint of the attraction at all,” Cody clarifies, but is intended to represent preliminary plans Master Gracey may have had when he was building the mansion.

Disneyland Haunted Mansion Floorplans
“You’ll see rooms that you see when you enter, like the portrait gallery and the ballroom. But then there are rooms that you don’t see, like the servants’ quarters and the game room. The top floor is the attic and you’ll see there are rooms there like the bridal boudoir and the sewing room, where the Hatbox Ghost would have made the hats.” Cody also reveals, “In the original design, the artists didn’t include a bathroom [in Master Gracey’s bed chamber]. And I said, ‘Well, Master Gracey would have his own bathroom.’ So we put the little details in there. It was a lot of fun.”

"Afterlife Advertisements" poster of Madame Leota
“Afterlife Advertisements” include a poster of Madame Leota, which could have been on the side of her gypsy cart, as well as other images that resemble advertisements during the time period of the Haunted Mansion.

Haunted Mansion "Fortunes and Fashions" Designs
A wide range of images and designs can be found in the “Fortunes and Fashions” art bucket, such as patterns inspired by tarot cards and items you might find in Madame Leota’s séance room. The designers also took traditional fabric designs like damask and toile and brought them to “afterlife” in a nontraditional, Haunted interpretation.

Disneyland Haunted Mansion Lace Pattern
In a lace pattern, Cody points out, “The faces that appear there are faces above the doors in the Endless Hallway, on the grates. The other face is in the Stretch Room—it’s the grating that’s around the air vents—and the bat in the circle comes from the front gates of the Haunted Mansion.”

Haunted Mansion Stripes Pattern resembling snakes
The stripe pattern features snakes that seem to slither upward. “Those are the doorknobs that are on the doors in the Endless Hallway,” Cody reveals, citing this as an example of the details most park visitors miss on their first Haunted Mansion visit, but which add to the attraction’s rich story. The stripe also references the frames around the mirrors found near the end of the attraction—the mirrors that alert visitors to the danger of Hitchhiking Ghosts.

"Haunted Mansion Authentic" logo
All of the new items will be marked with the “Haunted Mansion Authentic” logo, and many will also sport a tarot card hangtag. The hangtag resembles a tarot card that’s been themed to the mansion and Madame Leota on one side, and will feature a story about the collection on the reverse. The collection will feature some of the expected, like T-shirts, but all are realized in an unexpected way. Cody expects the T-shirts that have been designed to resemble to the attraction hosts’ butler and maid costumes to be top sellers. But the collection is filled with surprises, like a pair of smoking slippers, fedora hats, and Cody’s favorite item: a wedding cake topper that features the iconic bride ghost and her headless groom.

Haunted Mansion Merchandise
The designers’ goal was to raise the bar, in terms of detail in the storytelling and the quality.

As a Haunted Mansion fan himself, Cody admits, “My favorite thing about the attraction is that there’s a warmth to the Haunted Mansion that I don’t think you’d expect. It is spooky and scary, but at the same time I think it has a lot of heart to it and a lot of great storytelling.”

Walt Disney Archives Introduces a New Exhibit on the Walt Disney Studios Lot

Since 1970, the Walt Disney Archives has built up an astonishing collection of all things Disney.

Recently, after a small renovation of its Frank G. Wells Building facilities, the Archives staff had the chance to refresh its exhibit spaces to showcase more of its diverse collection, including items that have been tucked away for awhile.

Animators Desk in the Walt Disney Studio Archives

Upon entering the Archives Reading Room, the first thing you’ll notice is a detailed recreation of an animator’s office from 1940—the year The Walt Disney Studios debuted its new Kem Weber-designed facility. Complete with original furniture, the display brings the best of the then-new studio to life. Objects in the Archives’ merchandise display were also refreshed.

While a few key items, like the first version of the Mickey Mouse watch, remain from the pre-renovation display, there is now an assortment of popular Mickey Mouse Club and early Disneyland merchandise prominently showcased, as well. Keep your eyes peeled; you may recognize something from your own collection! Also added to the Reading Room displays are items that Walt featured in his formal and working offices through the years. These include a Praxinoscope (an early animation device from 1879 that Walt favored so much he used it on the Disneyland television series), and the Disney family crest that the master showman had on display in his working office. The original watercolor painting of Walt used for the December 27, 1954 cover of Time magazine, painted by one of the publication’s most prolific artists, Boris Chaliapin, is also on display.

"Disney's Sporting Life," featuring props, costumes and set decorations from some of Disney's most memorable sports-related productions

Inside the Archives isn’t the only place where some recent changes have occurred. New displays in the Frank G. Wells Building lobby include an exhibit dedicated to “Disney’s Sporting Life,” featuring props, costumes and set decorations from some of Disney’s most memorable sports-related productions.

This unique display includes Dean Jones’ racing costume from The Love Bug (1969), a polo shirt worn by Denzel Washington in Remember the Titans (2000) and a costume worn by Suraj Sharma in Million Dollar Arm (2014).

"Disney Music Makers," features musically related props and instruments from several Disney properties

Another exhibit, “Disney Music Makers,” features musically related props and instruments from several Disney properties that will surely pull at the heartstrings of fans of all ages. Jimmie Dodd’s Mickey Mouse

Club “Mousegetar” can be found alongside musical objects from Captain EO, Haunted Mansion and Bedknobs and Broomsticks, to name just a few.

Exhibit celebrating Donald Duck's 80th anniversary

Also on display in the lobby is an exhibit celebrating Donald Duck’s 80th anniversary. Consisting of vintage character merchandise, production artwork, and ephemera, this display showcases everyone’s favorite irascible fowl.

D23 Members will have the rare opportunity to see this new exhibit and enjoy a two-and-a-half-hour tour of The Walt Disney Studios and Walt Disney Archives, hosted by D23 and the Archives staff on November 8. For this particular tour that will celebrate the holidays, you will also see a piece of Disney history from The Santa Clause.

Once Upon a Time Season Four Preview

In the Fall 2014 issue of Disney twenty-three, now shipping to D23 Gold Members, D23 sat down with Once Upon a Time creators Eddy Kitsis and Adam Horowitz to discuss their very cool plan to incorporate Frozen into the new season.

But there’s much more happening in Storybrooke this fall!

Here’s our D23 Member “web extra” previewing what’s to come for Snow, Charming, Hook, Regina, Emma, and the rest of the characters when the ABC hit returns September 28. Plus, get ready for a reveal that will have you reeling!

So, looking back to the end of last season, can you explain what exactly happened when the Wicked Witch disintegrated, turned into dust, got into the box with the emerald pendant, and opened the portal?
Adam: She died. She turned into some kind of dust and disappeared because of her magical nature. What happened was, the pendant—which had her magic in it—was triggered at the moment of her death and opened the portal. That wasn’t Zelena in smoke form coming out—it was the magic that we had seen that was absorbed into the pendant Glinda gave her. The pendant became the source of Zelena’s power. Regina removed it and put it into her vault. And at the moment of her death, that triggered the portal opening.
Eddy: Of course, “death” is a relative term.

Emma has finally opened—to her family and to Hook—how do you see their relationships evolving?
Eddy: One of the big themes that tied Never Land and the Wicked Witch together is that happy endings aren’t what we think they are. They are something you have to fight for every day. Now it seems like Emma has found her home and she’s happy where she is. Rumple is married to Belle and that seems to be his happy ending. Snow and Charming have a child and they now share one heart. The question is, what happens next? For us it’s continuing to evolve the characters—especially with Regina. We left her in a really tough spot. People immediately thought she would go “crazy evil.” For us, that’s what’s interesting—now that we’ve done 66 episodes, how does Regina react? We know how she would have reacted in season one. How does she react in season four? We want to honor that and deepen the characters and create some fun mystery along the way.

Do you think it will be difficult for Hook to see a “little Prince Neal” running around as a constant reminder of Neal and Emma’s relationship?
Adam: I think Hook ultimately recognizes Neal for the hero that he was. And because of that, hearing the name and seeing him carried on in a new generation—he sees that as a good thing.
Eddy: He’s far too confident to be worried about other people.

For a while David and Mary Margaret were arguing about whether to stay in Storybrooke or go back to the Enchanted Forest. Will that arise again?
Eddy: The theme of the second half of the season last year was “there’s no place like home.” And what everyone started to realize is that Storybrooke is their home now. I don’t think anyone is interested in portal jumping right now. They’re interested in laying down some roots.
Adam: And in our world there’s penicillin.
Eddy: And cable television!

Michael Socha, who played the Knave on Once Upon a Time in Wonderland, will be joining the cast next season. How will he fit in?
Eddy: There are two things we know about him from Once Upon a Time in Wonderland. One is that we know he spent a short amount of time with the Merry Men [Will is “Will Scarlet” of the Robin Hood story] and we know Robin Hood is in Storybrooke. The other thing is we know he was in Storybrooke before. He is familiar with the town even though he didn’t have a lot of interaction with our people.
Adam: He was a victim of the first curse so he had a life in Storybrooke. So there’s a connection with him to the town and to some of our characters, including the Merry Men. Those will all be explored. We’ll also discover he has ties to other members of the Storybrooke world. He’s going to meet new people like Emma and Captain Hook, and his relationship with Captain Hook will be… testy.

And what does this mean happened with Anastasia?
Adam: What does that mean about Anastasia?
Eddy: That story will be told this season. We intend to tell it in a way that for people who never saw Wonderland, they will have full context. We’re not assuming viewers watched that show. So questions like “Who and where is Anastasia?” or “Is she with him?” will be answered when the season starts.

Are there characters we may not have seen for a while, for one reason or another, like Red, the Giant, Hopper… who we may see more of?
Eddy: Yes! Giancarlo Esposito is back as Sidney and the Magic Mirror.
Adam: Brad Dourif played Zoso, one of the early Dark Ones in season one, and he’s coming back.
Eddy: We’re going to dive into some…
Adam: …Dark One mythology. We’re going to learn more about Rumple and his past.
Eddy: And we’re going to meet Belle’s mom.

Is Belle’s mom dead or will we see her in flashbacks?
Adam: The truth of that—or not—will be revealed. We’ll learn more about Belle’s past. And we’ll see Belle in the time period before she met Rumplestiltskin.
Eddy: We’ve met Maurice [Belle’s father]. He runs Game of Thorns, the flower shop in town.
Adam: And we saw him in the first Belle flashback in season one. We’ll see more of him this season.
Eddy: We’d love to have Jamie [Chung, Mulan] back. She’s in our hopes. We definitely want to bring her back this year. There are so many characters over the years that we have touched on. We have a wish list and a plan for bringing them all back. It will really come down to how much story we can and will tell this season.

Can you tell me a little bit more about Elizabeth Mitchell’s character?
Eddy: A fan favorite from Lost. We were very excited to get to write for her again. She will have a tie to both somebody on the Frozen side and somebody on the Once Upon a Time side.

Okay, for Disney fans, is there anything that will be of particular interest we should keep an eye out for?
Adam: Yes! There is something coming up in the first few episodes that real Disney fans, I think, will really enjoy. It’s a shout-out and an explanation of some Disney lore. To say any more would ruin the surprise. But in many ways, it’s one of the most pure Disney explorations we have done yet.
Eddy: In the premiere you will see something very iconic that will launch a new story and a new area of Disney that we have yet to explore that we’re excited about.

Emma’s little Volkswagen becomes Herbie?
Eddy: No, but we have talked about that!

When the first curse was enacted, if the characters from the Enchanted Forest left Storybrooke, they would forget who they were. Is it the same with the second curse?
Adam: The rules will be explained very quickly at the start of this season. But we’re in a new place. The characters will be coming to terms with what it means to be in town and what it means if they want to leave town. Not everyone will necessarily want to be there.

Maybe they want to go to Walt Disney World?
Adam: Maybe they want to go to Walt Disney World.
