7 Most-Memorable Moments from the Avengers: Infinity War Press Conference

By Jim Frye

As movies go, Marvel Studios’ Avengers: Infinity War is one of the biggest productions—in terms of scope and A-list actors—of all time. Directors Joe and Anthony Russo, together with producer and Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige, have pulled off something truly extraordinary—combining the storylines and character arcs of 18 different films over 10 years into “the cinematic event of a lifetime.”

In anticipation of the April 27 opening, the film’s stars and directors have traveled to fan events around the globe, including Singapore, Tokyo, London, Mexico City, Sao Paulo, Seoul, and Shanghai. It stands to reason, then, that the press conference to kick off the premiere week would be nothing short of spectacular—and it was.

Of course, because of the secrecy surrounding Infinity War (Sssh! No spoilers!), this large assembly of Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) actors yielded few spoilers. But that didn’t matter, because half the fun was just seeing how each actor attempted to answer questions without giving away secrets. Did we learn much about the actual movie? Not really. But it was still one of the funniest, most enjoyable press conferences ever. Here are our seven favorite moments.

Avengers: Infinity War Press Conference

1. Jeff Goldblum as “Grand” Master of Ceremonies
Since Jeff Goldblum nearly stole the show in the recent Thor: Ragnorak as the Grandmaster, ruler of the planet Sakaar, it made sense Marvel would enlist his services at this week’s press conference. Showing his skills as a Master of Ceremonies, Goldblum kept the proceedings moving right along, along the way receiving a huge compliment from Robert Downey Jr. (Iron Man), who called him a “national treasure.”

2. Dropping the Curtain—The Grand Reveal
After Goldblum took the podium, regaling the audience about the sheer size of the cast in Avengers: Infinity War, he presided over the dramatic “unveiling” of the cast. With a rush of music and applause, the giant black drape dropped, revealing 21 cast members, plus Co-Directors Joe and Anthony Russo and Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige.

3. Tom Hiddleston Surprised That He’s Still Around
“I’m astonished that I’m still here, as you may be,” said Hiddleston in response to a question. “Loki has fallen through a wormhole, and faked his own death, and I never expected to be playing this part for so long. The great privilege that I’ve had is working with every single person on this stage—and even with the gentleman moderator (Goldblum). They’re all great. Kevin Feige and the writers have created these characters with such precision, that what happens in the space between them is always unique.”

4. Chris Pratt Talks About Bass Fishing
When it came to avoiding spoilery questions, no one did it better than Chris Pratt. He was asked, “What’s it like for Star-Lord, Peter Quill, to be seeing Earthlings for the first time in 30 years?” Pratt’s answer: “That’s a good question, but it might be best for you to wait and see it, so I’m gonna talk about bass fishing. Everyone knows that April’s a big month for bass.” He went on to give a lesson in the correct lure to use, finishing with, “Fish slow. You have to fish it slow. Thank you.” And he was done.

5. Paul Bettany’s Best Memories As Vision
When Bettany was asked for his best on-set memories, he emphasized the need for secrecy by saying, “Well, snitches end up in ditches.” After the laughs died down, he continued, “And all the best memories are just unassailable. We’ve been making these movies for a really long time, and it’s been a unique experience as actors to keep getting to work with the same people again and again and again. We’ve all gone through real-life stuff together. People have gotten married, had children… real-life stuff has happened. I’ve never been on a set where people choose not to go back to their trailers, but rather they hang out on set and make fun of each other. Thank you, guys!”

6. Anthony Russo Was Asked If Agent Coulson Comes Back In Infinity War
In another attempt to ferret out spoilery nuggets from the filmmakers, a reporter asked Co-Director Anthony Russo if Agent Coulson would return. Russo answered in true Pratt form: “What can I say…other than talk about bass fishing?” To which Paul Bettany interjected: “Snitches end up in ditches.” But Russo was able to give some insight into which characters made sense to include in this film. “When we began developing this movie, we had a picture of every single character who’s been in the MCU and we hung them on the wall. We spent months and months talking about where we could go with each character. Everyone on this stage has had a very specific journey in the MCU to arrive at in this moment. It was a very long, creative process. It was one of the most fun, creative exercises I think I’ve ever been through.”

7. Chris Hemsworth’s Most Challenging Scene To Film
Everyone discovered Chris Hemsworth’s comedic chops in Thor: Ragnarok, and he kept up the comedy during this press event. When asked, “What was your most challenging scene to film?,” he answered, “It was all very difficult because of the directors and the people I had to work with. It was an awful experience.” But after the jokes, he said, “The first day was what you see in the trailers—Thor meeting the Guardians—and it felt kind of like my first day at school because they all knew each other, and I was the new kid. I had some weird butterflies floating around in my body, but they squeezed them out of me with a big group hug—and all the butterflies went floating out of my ears.”

Get ready, Marvel Studios’ Avengers: Infinity War opens this Friday—and we can finally see what all the secrecy is about!

The Avengers: Infinity War Premiere Celebrates 10 Epic Years of the Marvel Cinematic Universe

By Jocelyn Buhlman

On Monday, we assembled along the purple carpet in Hollywood for the star-studded premiere of Marvel Studios’ Avengers: Infinity War. The event was as large-scale as the movie it honors, taking place across three different theaters—the El Capitan Theatre, the Dolby Theatre, and the TCL Chinese Theatre—with almost the entire cast in attendance, dressed in their Hollywood best and excited to see the much-anticipated movie for the very first time! We got a close-up look at some of the amazing costumes and props featured on the purple carpet in celebration of the 10-year history of the Marvel Cinematic Universe—including a certain D23 Easter egg from Captain America: Civil War!

We also caught up with some of the super cast on the purple carpet to talk about Marvel memories, Disney inspiration, and more:

Avengers: Infinity War premiere

Joe Russo’s Favorite Marvel Memory:
One half of the directorial duo reflected on his career with Marvel Studios: “A favorite Marvel Memory? Maybe it’s tonight. Because, honestly, we’ve had to be so secretive for the past two years, and nobody’s seen it—none of the cast has seen it, none of the crew has seen it. And tonight, we get to share it with everybody.”

Avengers: Infinity War premiere

Tom Hiddleston Reveals the Disney Villain that Inspired Loki:
Hiddleston cites a childhood favorite Disney villain that may have had an impact on his role as Loki: “Unconsciously, probably, Shere Khan, the tiger from the Jungle Book. This was not a deliberate thing, but the film had a huge impact on my childhood and on my imagination. George Saunders, who voices that character, seemed to be a villain who always was enjoying himself, and I try to enjoy myself as a villain.”

Avengers: Infinity War premiere

Sean Gunn’s Favorite Marvel Memory:
Sean’s favorite memory has a special family connection—his brother, James Gunn, directed Guardians of the Galaxy and Guardians of the Galaxy, Vol. 2: “I gotta say that working with my brother on the first [Guardians of the Galaxy] movie, and working with my brother all along—nothing can replace that. As amazing as it is to meet all these heroes that I’ve had growing up, nothing is better than working with someone I’ve loved and been with my whole life.”

Avengers: Infinity War premiere

Clark Gregg Reflects on 10 Years of Marvel:
Clark Gregg is one of the few to  been with the Marvel Cinematic Universe for all 10 years. He shared his memories from the very first red carpet: “The first red carpet of Iron Man, I think everyone was very nervous because Iron Man wasn’t a hugely popular character [at the time]— even though fans like me loved Iron Man! And I don’t know how anyone could have could have convinced themselves that we’d be here 10 years later, with 30 characters, at least, that people want to see interacting! It’s just a thrill. As a [one-time] 9-year-old geek, I’m dying to go watch it!”

Avengers: Infinity War premiere

Benedict Wong Reflects on the “Benedicts”:
We all know about Marvel’s famous collection of “Chrises,” but we wanted to know more about the “Benedicts.” When we asked Wong who was the better Benedict—himself or Cumberbatch—he was quick to answer: “I don’t like to really compare, but it’s got to be me, really. “  He laughs, and amends, “No—we both have our merits, I think. But as a duo, wow! That’s quite deadly.”

Besides catching up with the stars, we had a chance to share our latest issue of Disney twenty-three, a Summer Movie Spectacular featuring five movie-themed covers, including Avengers: Infinity War and Ant-Man and the Wasp. Check out some of the exclusive photos we got with the stars while on the purple carpet.

An Incredi-Q&A with Incredibles 2 Filmmakers

By Courtney Potter

Director Brad Bird and producers John Walker and Nicole Grindle offer up some super-exciting tidbits about Disney•Pixar’s highly anticipated sequel.

You’ll want to gather the family and get those super suits out of storage for this summer’s most anticipated animated adventure… Over a decade after bursting onto the scene with the coolest powers and lots of heart in 2004’s The Incredibles, the Parr clan—and their pals, fellow super Frozone and über-stylist Edna Mode—are back in Incredibles 2, leaping into U.S. theaters on June 15. This time ‘round, it’s Helen (voice of Holly Hunter) who’s called on to lead a campaign to bring Supers back to the fore, while Bob (voice of Craig T. Nelson) navigates the day-to-day heroics of “normal” life at home with Violet (voice of Sarah Vowell), Dash (voice of Huck Milner), and baby Jack-Jack—the adorable kidlet whose super powers are just about to be discovered! The mission is derailed, however, when a new villain emerges with a brilliant and dangerous plot that threatens just about everything. Joining our favorite Supers are Samuel L. Jackson as Lucius Best/Frozone; Brad Bird as Edna; Bob Odenkirk as millionaire businessman (and super Super fan) Winston Deavor; Catherine Keener as Winston’s genius sister Evelyn Deavor; Jonathan Banks as Rick Dicker; Sophia Bush as Voyd, a “wannabe” Super; and Isabella Rossellini as an influential ambassador who wants to advocate for Supers around the globe.

incredibles 2

Recently, D23 was lucky enough to visit Pixar Animation Studios in Emeryville, CA, and hear from Incredibles 2 director (and the hilarious voice of Edna) Brad Bird, who helmed the original 2004 hit—as well as producers John Walker and Nicole Grindle—about the film… how it developed; what audiences can expect; some interesting trivia tidbits; and what makes the whole Incredibles world so very super.

D23: Why did you decide to set Incredibles 2 just moments after the finale of the 2004 film?
Brad Bird: “When I was first starting to work on the project, long before Pixar or anything like that—it was even before The Iron Giant [Bird’s 1999 animated film]—I went to a comic book shop and thought, ‘I’ve got to think up new powers.’ After about a half an hour, I realized every power has been done by somebody, somewhere. Even if it’s only 100 self-published issues in Ohio. Right after that, I had a little epiphany: I realized I’m not very interested in the powers. That’s not the part that interests me. What interests me is the idea of having a family, and having there being a reason to hide the powers. And once I had that insight into what I wanted to do, I picked the powers based on who they were in the family. I played with traditional archetypes:  Men are expected to be strong, so I had Bob have super strength. Mothers are pulled in a million different directions, so I had Helen be elastic. Teenagers are insecure and defensive, so I had Violet have force fields and invisibility. Ten-year-olds are energy balls that can’t be stopped. And babies are unknown… So that idea changes if you age the characters up—and the insight into those periods of your life and those particular perspectives disappears once you age them up.”

D23: This film had a slightly condensed production schedule—can you speak about that process?
Bird: “Shifting [premiere dates] has happened a number of times at Pixar. The Incredibles was supposed to be after Cars. [But] our reels came together a little earlier than Cars did, so we moved up. The same situation happened here. That was a challenge for us, but the studio is three times bigger than it was during The Incredibles. So we could actually, theoretically, get the movie made—and that is what came to pass.”
Nicole Grindle: “Having worked here on a number of films, I can tell you when there’s that kind of schedule intensity, people really rise to the occasion, and I sometimes think they do even better work.”

D23: Were there any challenges, story-wise?
Bird: “It’s distracting to think about pleasing an audience that has no real definition; it’s old, it’s young, it’s east, west, north, south… The better way to think about it is, I’m going into a darkened movie theater, the curtains are opening—what do I want to see? If you ask that question of yourself, you’re always connecting with the person that wants to be told a story. I feel comfortable answering that question. You want the characters to feel consistent. You want the world to feel consistent. But you don’t want to be able to know what’s going to happen next. So that’s the challenge—and it’s not an easy challenge to meet. It definitely is your job if you’re making films.”
John Walker: “Yeah—and the fact that we took 14 years to do it suggests that we took the challenge seriously!”

incredibles 2

D23: What was it like reuniting with the voice cast? And what about some of the new additions?
Bird: “There’s no weak link… When I was an animator, I really hoped that I would have a good soundtrack to animate to because what takes an actor five seconds to say may take an animator three weeks to animate. And they have to listen to that dialogue over and over and over… So, I try to collect the kind of soundtracks that I would want if I were an animator, and all of our actors delivered!
“We’re always trying to juice it up. I love our voice cast and I loved returning to working with Holly and Craig and Sarah; and we have a new Dash, Huck Milner, who is amazing—every bit as good as the first Dash… Of the new actors, Bob Odenkirk and Catherine Keener and Sophia Bush just kick it out through the roof.”

incredibles 2

D23: Can you talk a bit about baby Jack-Jack, and his newfound Super-ness?
Bird: “We try to treat this very unrealistic world—try to pepper in realism in terms of what people think, how they react to having powers. Jack-Jack is presented as a baby, so what interests him is what interests a baby. He never understands what’s going on, and can’t anticipate the villain’s move or whatever. It’s more like ‘That’s shiny! I like that! This makes me angry! I want to go there!’ It’s those kinds of emotions—and then you build the super powers around that. So he’s still a baby, even though he has these powers that he only has limited control over.”

incredibles 2

D23: Are there thoughts you hope audiences come away with, after seeing the film?
Bird: “It explores a lot of ideas. The most important mission of the first movie was to entertain the heck out of people, and the second thing was, ‘Oh, we have some other things we’d like to comment on—some of them are the roles of men and women, fathers and mothers; how teenagers view the world; what mid-life crisis [might look like]’… We have things [in Incredibles 2] that again explore the roles of men and women, the importance of fathers participating, the importance of allowing women to also express themselves through work … That parenting is a heroic act… It’s more like, you create something that hopefully is fun and entertaining and then put little ideas here and there that add dimension to it.”

Don’t miss the further adventures of the Parr family and all their super pals when Incredibles 2 premieres at a cineplex near you this summer!

Handling with Care: Meet Disney’s Animal Kingdom’s Animal Care Experts

By Beth Deitchman

From Bambi’s first adoring smile at his mother to newborn Simba’s wondrous gaze at the circle of life he has just joined, we’ve always found Disney’s youngest animals to be simply irresistible. The same might be said for the very real animals that live at Disney’s Animal Kingdom Theme Park. Sumatran tiger cubs Anala and Jeda made their official debut on Maharajah Jungle Trek in December, just a few months after their birth, followed by the arrival of Augustus, a baby Nile hippopotamus, in January. Since the park opened, 20 years ago this Sunday, on April 22, 1998, the dedicated members of the animal care team have kept careful and respectful watch over the more than 1500 animals that call Disney’s Animal Kingdom Theme Park home. We spoke with two of the managers whose teams provide unparalleled care for the tigers and hippos about what goes into nurturing Disney’s Animal Kingdom’s newest bundles of joy.

Disney's Animal Kingdom new babies

Anala and Jeda are the first tigers ever to be born at Disney’s Animal Kingdom, which was home to six female tigers in its earliest days. According to Zoological Manager Jill Piltz (pictured below left), who has been with the park since its beginning, as the park began to look to a next generation of tigers, the decision was made to participate in the tiger Species Survival Plan breeding program through the Association of Zoos and Aquariums.

Disney's Animal Kingdom Hippo and Tiger Zoological Experts

Zoological Manager Kristen Wolfe (pictured above right), a 13-year veteran of the park, emphasizes that Animal Kingdom and the zoos that participate in the Species Survival Plan are committed to caring for animals responsibly. This means they need to have room in their populations for the new additions, and they need to match potential mothers and fathers very carefully so that would-be parents are set up to succeed, taking into account genetics, temperament, and recommendations from Species Survival Plan coordinators. “It’s not as easy as in the wild, where a male and female meet and that’s what happens. There’s a lot of planning,” Wolfe says. Three years worth of planning led the cubs’ parents, mother Sohni and father Malosi, to Disney’s Animal Kingdom, where the rest, as they say, is history.

Disney's Animal Kingdom new babies

Piltz’s team closely monitored Sohni throughout her pregnancy, and when it was time for her to deliver, they followed a practice that she terms “eyes on, hands off.” They gave Sohni the privacy she needed to feel that her cubs were safe, but supervised through a camera system so that they would be ready to intervene in case of an emergency. “That was the scariest moment, just watching from a distance,” Piltz says, “but she (Sohni) had to do it—she did it all on her own—and everything came out OK.” The care team had the enviable task of naming Sohni’s babies, choosing Anala, which means “fiery” or “feisty” for the little girl with the big personality, and the name Jeda—which means “pause”—for the male cub, a reference to a marking he bears, which resembles a pause symbol. Now eight months old, the cubs have grown—Jeda currently weighs 92 pounds, while his slightly smaller sister comes in at 88.5 pounds—and you just might spot them playing in the water in the Sumatran tiger exhibit, where they’re having a blast.

Disney’s Animal Kingdom cares for one of the largest groups of hippos in North America, but it had been 13 years since the bloat—as groups of hippos are called—included a baby. Wolfe and her team worked with the Species Survival Plan to determine that Tuma, a dominant female, was the ideal candidate to deliver a baby hippo and acclimate it to the ways of the herd. “She’s (Tuma) able to tell the other hippos what to do and what not to do,” Wolfe says.

Wolfe’s team kept a close eye on Tuma as she prepared to deliver and for the first eight weeks of Augustus’ life. At first, Tuma may have been a little overprotective, Wolfe recalls, but that tapered off as Augustus learned what is proper social behavior for hippos. “Just like a kid, if he does something that gets him in trouble, he learns not to do that again,” Wolfe explains, noting that Augustus has matured. “What people don’t realize is that hippo behaviors are a lot like human behaviors—there’s that growing and learning period for them that we need to let happen.”

Disney's Animal Kingdom new babies

Letting the animals learn for themselves is key to how Disney’s Animal Kingdom approaches their care. “The animals teach their babies all the natural behaviors they should, and then someday, when those babies become parents on their own, they already know all those behaviors because they learned them from mom growing up,” Piltz says.

The members of the care team want the animals to feel like they’re keeping their distance, but these highly attentive cast members are grateful for the brief encounters that remind them of the unique perspective they have with respect to these wild animals. “Last night I took two seconds to sit down at the computer and write a work order, and I look over—and the office door is open—to see a rhino off in the distance, eating dinner. And there are people on this earth that will never see a live rhino ever,” Wolfe marvels.

Disney's Animal Kingdom new babies

After 20-plus years with Disney’s Animal Kingdom, Piltz agrees that the small moments have the biggest impact. “With the Sumatran tiger cubs, you see new behavior. Seeing them wrestle with a coconut and play with it…,” she says. “Those are the moments that you’ve got to just stop, watch, and take a moment and enjoy it. You’re working with endangered species that are very rare on this planet and they’re awesome animals.”

“I’ve been here 20 years,” she continues. “I’ve seen some animals born here, grow up, have their own kids already, and raise their own offspring. That, to me, is magical.”
