Into the Unknown: Making Frozen 2 Brings the Ultimate Inside Look at Disney Animation to Disney+

By Beth Deitchman

Malerie Walters found a way to glide to the top of an icy glacier like Elsa and to sing like a reindeer—a chorus of them, actually—in real life. And Frozen 2’s “Into the Unknown” and “Lost in the Woods” sequences just wouldn’t be the same without the animator’s imagination, dedication, and artistry. Beginning this Friday, June 26, Disney+’s new docuseries Into the Unknown: Making Frozen 2 takes fans on a fascinating behind-the-scenes journey through the production of Walt Disney Animation Studios’ 2019 blockbuster. Over six episodes, Into the Unknown: Making Frozen 2 spotlights an incredible team effort while also shining a light on many of the talented artists and technologists, such as Walters, whose individual contributions combined to create the No. 1 animated feature of all time.

Chronicling the year leading up to the film’s November 2019 release, Into the Unknown: Making Frozen 2 features the cast and filmmakers we’ve come to associate with the Frozen franchise—among them actors Kristen Bell, Idina Menzel, Josh Gad, and Jonathan Groff; directors Jennifer Lee and Chris Buck; producer Peter Del Vecho; and songwriters Kristen Anderson-Lopez and Robert Lopez—and allows fans to be flies on the wall for recording sessions, story meetings, screenings, and more. Walters’ Frozen 2 experience helps illuminate the staggering number of moving parts that are involved in creating a single animated sequence—let alone a feature-length film.

Walters laughs as she talks about her siblings, who often remark, “My sister animated this movie!” in reference to the projects she’s been involved with, which include Ralph Breaks the Internet for Disney Animation and Spies in Disguise and Ferdinand for Blue Sky. “I’m like, ‘No, I didn’t!’ I did such a tiny part,” she responds. Walters may see her role in Frozen 2 as “a tiny part,” but as audiences watch her sequences for “Into the Unknown” and “Lost in the Woods” come together, it’s clear that at Disney Animation, all parts are of the utmost importance—and none could ever be deemed “tiny.“

into the unknown

In the first episode of Into the Unknown: Making Frozen 2, viewers will see the painstaking effort Walters undertook to animate Elsa running during a climactic moment of the anthem “Into the Unknown.” “Each shot is a new problem that you have to solve,” Walters tells D23. “You’re going to approach every shot completely differently, and that part is really, really fun.” Though animators may have a vision in their heads for how a specific motion or action may look on screen, they’ll frequently create reference footage to inspire their animation. Walters’ shot in “Into the Unknown” was made more difficult by the fact that the camera is moving along with Elsa. “It’s a very tricky moment,” Walters notes, but with a little help from her boyfriend, she found a creative—and fun—solution to the problem. “It was actually my boyfriend’s idea. He was like, ‘I can jump on my skateboard,’” recalls Walters, and with her boyfriend serving as a smartphone cinematographer, she channeled her inner Elsa, running through Arendelle by way of a Southern California street.

“I think the reason I love animation so much is because I can get inside the skin and inside the head of the character and really try to feel what it is like to be that character,” Walters shares.

into the unknown

While Walters’ “Lost in the Woods” reference video may not feature skateboarding or leaps atop “glaciers,” it’s just as much of a delight to discover in the docuseries. “The process might change slightly from shot to shot, depending on the moment and what it needs,” Walters explains—and what “Lost in the Woods” needed was singing reindeer. To help her animate Kristoff and his reindeer backup singers, Walters created what might be the most magical music video ever, with the animator lip-syncing for each of the many parts. “The song is my favorite in the whole movie,” she shares. “It makes me laugh so much, but it’s also really heartwarming. I love that it’s OK to let out your feelings. I love that message.”

Walters also loves the message of Frozen itself. “For me, the story [of Frozen] was really powerful and something I hadn’t seen in animation yet—the relationship between two sisters. I see a lot of my relationship with my sisters in their relationship,” she says, and when she first joined the production of Frozen 2, Walters knew that she wanted to animate Elsa and Anna. “They’re so unique and they’re so true to themselves.”

Beyond the inside details and specific challenges that went into creating the film, Into the Unknown: Making Frozen 2 provides an incredible overview of the animation process that Walters hopes will strike a chord for future artists and technologists—in much the same way that she was affected by “making-of” videos for her own childhood favorites. “You’ll see the tip of the iceberg in the docuseries, but it’s great because it’s going to get people interested,” she says. “I hope that people will want to take a deeper dive and that young artists will be inspired—and that even people who aren’t necessarily artistic but [have] creative minds, will think, ‘I could do that.’ That part gets me really, really excited!”

JUST ANNOUNCED: Disneyland Paris to Begin Phased Reopening on July 15

By the D23 Team

Today just got a little more magical! This morning, Disneyland Paris announced a phased reopening of the resort starting with the Disneyland Park, Walt Disney Studios Park, Disney’s Newport Bay Club Hotel, and Disney Village as of July 15, 2020. The reopening is in line with guidance from French government and health authorities and has been discussed with Union Representatives from the Comité Social et Economique (CSE).

In addition, and subject to the continued evolution of the situation, Disneyland Paris also announced the scheduled phased reopening of several other Disney hotels including Disney’s Hotel Cheyenne on July 20, Disney’s Hotel Santa Fe on August 3, and the Disneyland Hotel on September 7. Disney’s Sequoia Lodge Hotel and Disney’s Davy Crocket Ranch will remain closed during the summer with reopening dates announced at a later time.

“All of us at Disneyland Paris are excited to be on the path to reopening over the next few weeks,” said Natacha Rafalski, President of Disneyland Paris. “Making magic means even more, as we reflect on the resilience of our cast members and community, the enthusiasm of our guests and fans, and the positive momentum of many reopenings in the tourism industry across Europe. We are looking forward to the return of our cast members and reopening our gates for guests to once again enjoy.”

“We are thrilled to see one of the main tourism destinations in Europe and largest single site employer in France reopen to guests and its employees,” said Sophie Huberson, Executive Director of Le Syndicat National des Espaces de Loisirs, d’Attractions et Culturels (SNELAC). “This is an important milestone for the tourism and leisure industry in France and will be a critical step in our industry’s recovery.” SNELAC is the organization representing theme parks, leisure, and cultural areas in France.

Safety Measures and Experience
The phased reopening will incorporate a deliberate approach, with enhanced health and safety measures implemented for both cast members and guests. This will include:

  • Limits on attendance, requiring advanced ticketing and reservations to accommodate controlled guest density that supports government guidance on physical distancing.
  • Some experiences, shows, or events will not be available or may be modified upon reopening depending on the evolution of the safety and sanitary measures and recommendations from public authorities. This includes offerings such as Disney Stars on Paradeand Disney Illuminations night-time spectacular, which will return at a later date.
  • The Lion King: Rhythms of the Pride Lands and Jungle Book Jive—two top-rated entertainment spectaculars—will return later in the summer.
  • While character meet and greets will be temporarily unavailable, characters will be in the parks in new ways to entertain and delight guests.
  • Other experiences, such as playgrounds and makeover experiences, will remain temporarily unavailable.
  • FastPass services will be suspended in order to allow for the necessary queue management on attractions.
  • Cast members and guests ages 11 and older will also be required to wear face coverings while at the resort.

More information on specific measures are available on www.disneylandparis.com.

Ticketing and Reservation System
As Disneyland Paris welcomes guests back to the magic with a limited number of tickets available each day during the initial reopening, a new online reservation system will be available in early July. To ensure admission, guests in possession of or buying non-dated tickets, and Annual Pass holders, will need to register on this new online reservation system to obtain a reservation for park entry prior to their arrival. Guests who already have a dated ticket do not need to register and reserve a date. Likewise, guests with packages that include park admittance will receive admission for the duration of their stay and do not need to use the new online reservation system.

Tickets and packages are now on sale on the resort’s website, Disneyland Paris call center, and official travel partner channels, with a limited number of tickets available each day during the initial reopening phase. Ticket sales will not be available on site.

To provide guests with maximum flexibility, new booking conditions are now available to include cancellations and modifications without fees (excluding transport) on stays in the Disney Hotels anytime up to seven days before the arrival date. Specific details are available on www.disneylandparis.com.

As Disneyland Paris readies for reopening, guests are invited to check www.disneylandparis.com for the latest information. Fans and guests can continue to experience the magic of Disneyland Paris through athome.DisneylandParis.com, and use #DisneyMagicMoments on social media to share their stories.

Summer Magic: Saving a Cinematic Relic on the Disney Backlot

By Rick Lorentz, Walt Disney Archives

Acquiring objects for the multiple collections of the Walt Disney Archives may take one of many routes. Typically, television and film productions will offer props and costumes to the Archives once a production has wrapped. If an attraction undergoes refurbishment or permanently closes, Disney Parks and Resorts will receive an Archives “Wish List” for select and iconic pieces that we would like to add to our collection.

However, when founder of the Walt Disney Archives, Dave Smith, first began acquiring objects for the cause, he sometimes had to resort to more “direct” options. Case in point: a baluster from the 1963 film Summer Magic. According to Dave, the house used for exterior shots in the film was part of the studio back lot. One day, while walking across the lot, Dave passed by the house as it was being torn down to make way for new construction. Recognizing both the film location and the history that was being destroyed, Dave ran over to the house and grabbed one of the only things he could—an 18-inch piece of carved wood directly from the front porch! The baluster now resides comfortably in an archival box in a secure warehouse. Fortunately, the rest of the Summer Magic collection (two dresses and several original pieces of costume development art) were acquired in a more conventional manner!

Your First Look at Disney Channel’s Upside-Down Magic Is Spellbinding

By Zach Johnson

Which kind of witch are you?

The spellbinding trailer for the highly anticipated Disney Channel Original Movie Upside-Down Magic was released today. Premiering Friday, July 31, at 8 p.m. ET/PT, the film follows 13-year-old Nory Boxwood Horace (newcomer Izabela Rose) and her best friend, Reina Carvajal (Siena Agudong), as they enroll in the Sage Academy for Magical Studies.

While Reina’s expert ability to harness the power of fire lands her at the top of the class of Flares, Nory’s unreliable magic and proclivity for turning into herself into a “Dritten”—a half-kitten, half-dragon—lands her in a class for those with upside-down magic, or UDM, led by the wisecracking groundskeeper and “professor” Budd Skriff (Kyle Howard). Unfortunately, the stern Headmaster Knightslinger (Vicki Lewis) believes the UDM’s unconventional powers make them vulnerable to dangerous and evil “shadow magic,” so Nory and her fellow classmates must prove that upside-down magic beats right-side up.

Based on the New York Times bestselling children’s book of the same name, Upside-Down Magic also stars Max Torina, Elie Samouhi, and Alison Fernandez. The movie will also be available to watch on DisneyNOW beginning Saturday, August 1. Director Joe Nussbaum serves as an executive producer alongside Suzanne Farwell and Susan Cartsonis. Bill Boes is the production designer, Adam Santelli is the director of photography, and Barbara Somerville is the costume designer. Nick Pustay and Josh Cagan wrote the teleplay, based on the Scholastic book from novelists Sarah Mlynowski, Lauren Myracle, and Emily Jenkins.

On Ian’s 16th birthday, he receives a magical gift that gives him and his big brother, Barley (voice of Chris Pratt), the chance to spend one more day with their dad. So, after she makes a deal with the sea witch Ursula (voice of Pat Carroll) without so much as reading the fine print, King Triton strikes a new deal to take his daughter’s place as Ursula’s servant by giving up his all-powerful trident. It’s the ultimate story of love, sacrifice, and understanding… all set against a brilliant musical score.

the incredibles

3. The Incredibles (2004)
Known to the world as Mr. Incredible, Bob Parr (voice of Craig T. Nelson) is known by another name at home: Dad. After adopting a civilian identity and retreating into the suburbs with his wife, Helen/Elastigirl (voice of Holly Hunter), and their three kids, Bob is itching to get back into action. He finally gets his chance when a curious communication summons him to a remote island for a top-secret assignment. But to save the world from being destruction, he needs a team of Supers… and who better to join Bob than his family?

the lion king

4. The Lion King (1994)
Heir to the throne, Simba (voice of Jonathan Taylor Thomas) is a young lion cub who just can’t wait to be king. As part of their plan, Tony and Steve Rogers/Captain America (Chris Evans) travel to 1970 to obtain the Space Stone and some Pym Particles—and in a chance encounter, Tony has a cathartic moment with his late father, Howard Stark (John Slattery). finding nemo

7. Finding Nemo (2003)
All Marlin (voice of Albert Brooks) wants is to keep his son Nemo (voice of Alexander Gould) safe. It’s easier said than done, of course, especially given Nemo’s need to prove himself. Without telling his dad, Max reroutes their map to Los Angeles so he can attend the Powerline concert. After Goofy realizes what his son has done, a major fight ensues—but it ends with a heart-to-heart that has them seeing “I2I” at the big show.

tron legacy
