Q: In watching the 1950 short Crazy Over Daisy, one can’t help that notice that the tune used in the feature (credited to Oliver Wallace) is the same music that would eventually become “Meet Me Down On Main Street.” Did Oliver Wallace write the lyrics for “Meet Me Down On Main Street” as well? Was it written specifically for the Mellomen to record, or was it written for a special on Disneyland?

A: Oliver Wallace wrote both the words and music for “Daisy Mae” to be used in the Crazy Over Daisy cartoon in 1949. He then adapted his song in 1956 as “Meet Me Down on Main Street,” with lyrics by Tom Adair. The latter may have first been used, without lyrics, in the Main Street, U.S.A. segment of the 1956 People and Places film Disneyland, U.S.A. and on the “Walt Disney Takes You to Disneyland” record album (WDL 4004, released May 1, 1956). The Mellomen’s recording came out in 1957 as WDL 3012.
