Q: I am a graduate student researching the early days of the Disney theme parks alongside other simultaneously emerging technologies of illusion and entertainment. I am especially curious about Disney’s interest, if any, in virtual reality devices and ideas. I have seen it written in several places around the Internet that Morton Heilig (considered one of the founding thinkers of modern virtual reality ideas) functioned as some sort of technical adviser for The Walt Disney Company, but have been unable to verify this connection. Can you shed some light on Heilig’s past with Disney?

A: Mr. Heilig’s resume on his website notes that he worked for a time for Walt Disney Imagineering in special effects, theater design, and 3-D.
