Simu Liu, Xochitl Gomez, Bret Iwan, and More Share Their Disney Holiday Traditions

By Sarah Sterling

Dust off those cobwebs and throw away your jack-o-lanterns, because Halloween is over and the winter holiday season is about to begin! It’s one of the best times of the year for Disney fans—with seasonal additions to the Disney Parks, new movie releases, and so much festive enchantment to enjoy! We here at D23: The Official Disney Fan Club have lots of Disney holiday traditions and, at Wednesday night’s BoxLunch Gala honoring Feeding America, we had a chance to ask some of your favorite Disney stars what their Disney traditions are!

Isabella Ward of West Side Story stands on the red carpet against an orange step-and-repeat featuring the BoxLunch and Feeding America logos. She has long brown hair that sits straight behind her shoulders and she is wearing an ankle-length, one-shouldered red dress.

With overlays like Haunted Mansion Holiday at Disneyland Resort; special events like “Mickey’s Very Merry Christmas Party” at Walt Disney World; and seemingly endless treats, characters, and entertainment to enjoy, we agree with West Side Story’s Isabella Ward that the Disney Parks are a great place to make holiday memories! “I grew up in Florida, so we would always go to Walt Disney World during Christmastime,” she explained, “and see all the snow and the fireworks and do the whole thing! So, my tradition is definitely Walt Disney World—going to the Parks!”

If you prefer to cozy up at home for the holidays, your traditions might match up with Shang-Chi himself, Simu Liu. “The Santa Clause!” Liu exclaimed when we asked him his favorite Disney holiday movie; “I watch The Santa Clause every year.” Liu will serve as the 2022 BoxLunch Giving Ambassador and, later in the evening, he matched a $100,000 donation for Feeding America—bringing the total up to $200K to provide food to people in need through a nationwide network of local food banks.

Bret Iwan smiles at the camera in front of an orange step-and-repeat. He is wearing a gray suit jacket, gray button up shirt, and forest green tie.

Bret Iwan, the official voice of Mickey Mouse, has a similar tradition. “Every Christmas I have to watch Mickey’s Christmas Carol. I remember waiting for it on ABC every Christmas season and when it would finally come on, we’d sit down as a family and watch it.” Iwan has voiced Mickey Mouse for over a decade, inheriting the role from Disney Legend Wayne Allwine in 2009. On November 28, you can hear Iwan as Mickey in a brand-new holiday special, Mickey Saves Christmas—debuting on Disney+; “I’m hoping [this] becomes a new Christmas tradition for families to watch,” he admitted.

Xochitl Gomez gives the camera a sly over-the-shoulder smile on the red carpet in front of an orange step-and-repeat. She is wearing a mauve colored jumpsuit and her dark brown hair is styled in loose waves.

Christmas is totally paw-some for WandaVision’s Emma Caulfield Ford: “My daughter really loves Santa Buddies. That’s really the tradition for us.” But Caulfield Ford’s own taste in Christmas movies skews a bit more adult, while still staying within the worlds of Disney. “My Christmas films are, you know, like Die Hard,” she revealed. “That’s the all-time Christmas movie—let’s be honest!” Meanwhile, Marvel darling Xochitl Gomez might need some help; when asked if she has any annual Disney holiday traditions, she said, “Not really, but I should probably make one now that I’m in this world!” However, Gomez explained that—in terms of movies she watches on repeat—Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness is “on loop at this point,” no matter the time of year.

Meet the New Characters of Black Panther: Wakanda Forever

By Jocelyn Buhlman

Black Panther: Wakanda Forever returns us to the world fans adored in 2018’s Black Panther, but also brings us to a world shaken by tragedy and threatened by outside forces. The characters we know and love— Queen Ramonda, Shuri, M’Baku, Nakia, Okoye and the Dora Milaje—are mourning the loss of King T’Challa. However, new forces (and new faces) quickly come into play, and our heroes must band together to protect Wakanda again. Who are these new faces, both friend and foe, stirring up change? Get to know the new characters you’ll be meeting in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.

Namor (Tenoch Huerta Mejía) stares at the camera head-on, his face-half lit and half in darkness. He wears a complex, beaded collar, and jewelry on his ears and through his nose.

Namor (Tenoch Huerta Mejía)
Fans of Marvel comics are very familiar with this aquatic ruler—Namor is one of Marvel’s oldest characters, first appearing in Marvel Comics #1 in 1939 under the moniker “the Sub-Mariner.”  Tenoch Huerta Mejía dives into Namor’s big screen debut as the ruler of Talokan, a hidden undersea nation descended from an ancient Mayan community—that is also a reimagining of Atlantis from Marvel comics. Much like the Wakandans, the people of Talokan remain hidden from society to survive, distrusting outsiders in the name of survival.

Director Ryan Coogler explains, “[Namor has] lived a really long time and knows no equal in terms of his capabilities, being able to fly and breathe underwater, and breathe at high altitudes and walk around on land. He’s incredibly strong.” He alerts Queen Ramonda and Princess Shuri to a global threat—but also shares with them his disturbing plan to thwart it.

A portrait of Namora (Mabel Cadena), a blue-skinned woman wearing a breathing mask and a complex, spiky collar. She is looking to her right at something we cannot see.

Namora (Mabel Cadena)
Namor’s cousin (the name might have given it away), Namora is a fierce Talokanil warrior who serves as his right-hand woman. Mabel Cadena explains, “She’s ready to protect Namor and protect his people and fight to the death for all of them.” She looks up to her cousin, viewing him as a father figure. “Namora is a strong woman,” continues Cadena. “She can be a warrior. She can be a princess. She can be different things.”

A portrait of Attuma (Alex Livinalli), a blue-skinned man wearing a headdress, spiky shoulder pads, and a breathing mask. He is emerging from the darkness and staring head-on at the camera.

Attuma (Alex Livinalli)
Unbelievably skilled, Attuma is one of the strongest and fastest warriors in Talokan. Narratively, he serves as a counterpart to the Dora Milaje, acting as a foil to Okoye. Producer Nate Moore explains, “Okoye’s a powerful character in that she’s charismatic without saying a lot. In finding our Attuma, who ends up being a foil to Okoye through most of the film, we needed to find an actor who had a similar skill set—someone who wouldn’t necessarily need a lot of dialogue, who had a physicality that was very obvious, who looked iconic.” Alex Livinalli was perfect for the role.

“Yes, he’s a fighter,” Livinalli explains, “But the way I see him, he’s just a very lovable person. He has love for his people, for Namor, for Namora, for his way of life—he’s kind of like a father protecting his family. That’s who Attuma is: ‘If you compromise our way of life, you’re gonna see how much I love fighting.’”

A close-up portrait of Riri Williams (Dominique Thorne), wearing goggles and a gold necklace. She is half-shadowed, as if she is emerging from the darkness.

Riri Williams (Dominique Thorne)
While Shuri has always been Wakanda’s resident whiz kid, she may have finally met her match in Riri Williams; a 19-year-old MIT student with a genius-level intellect, Riri brings an outsider’s perspective to the high-tech world of Wakanda. “It was great to have this young college student from Chicago running circles around everybody in school but now thrust into this crazy world with the Wakandans and the Talokanil,” says director Ryan Coogler.

“Shuri’s at a turning point,” says Coogler. “Shuri’s at a point where she’s vacillating between optimism and pessimism, and she meets Riri, who is like a version of herself.  She ends up taking on kind of a big sister role with Riri, which is really interesting because Shuri was the youngest character in the first film.”

Coogler recalls being the youngest person on the crew, and how strange it can feel to now be in a leadership position—to be older and wiser. “That’s the idea of time and change, and we wanted to highlight that,” he explains. “With Riri, it was somebody for Shuri to help be responsible for and to look out for and advise.”

Aneka (Michaela Coel) looks over her shoulder at the camera, shrouded in darkness except for her face and the shiny silver of her shoulder and collar.

Aneka (Michaela Coel)
Aneka is a high-ranking leader of the Dora Milaje, a group of warriors expertly trained to protect Wakanda. While she is highly skilled, Aneka also has a rebellious steak and a love for trying new things. In Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, Aneka teams up with Dora Milaje member Ayo to take on a bigger role in the group. “It’s a really interesting dynamic that we haven’t seen before,” explains screenwriter Joe Robert Cole. “Seeing Ayo and Aneka fighting back-to-back is really exciting.”

Black Panther: Wakanda Forever roars into theaters November 11, 2022.

His only chance at salvation is to find a missing document certifying the shares his father left him. However, Michael and his sister, Jane (Emily Mortimer), receive the surprise of a lifetime when their former nanny, Mary Poppins (Emily Blunt), arrives to save the day and take the Banks family on a magical adventure. The film’s star-studded cast includes Lin-Manuel Miranda, Julie Walters, Meryl Streep, Colin Firth, and Disney Legends Dick Van Dyke and Angela Lansbury. The stage is decorated with large cutouts of candy canes, Christmas trees, and snowflakes, and large presents are placed on the floor to the left of Gwen.

Marvel’s Spidey and his Amazing FriendsFriday, November 11, at 8:30 a.m. ET/PT on Disney Channel and 12:30 p.m. ET/PT on Disney Junior
This brand-new holiday-themed episode features not one but two festive stories! In “Halted Holiday,” all roads to the city are block on Thanksgiving Day and Team Spidey—Spider-Man/Peter Parker (voiced by Benjamin Valic), Spider-Man/Spin/Miles Morales (voiced by Jakari Fraser), and Ghost-Spider/Gwen Stacy (voiced by Lily Sanfelippo)—helps clear the traffic. Scott Porter guest stars as Gwen’s dad, George Stacy. Then, in “Merry Spidey Christmas,” Team Spidey uses their Glow Webs to save Christmas after baddies try to ruin all the holiday fun. This story includes the rockin’ new original song “Merry Spidey Christmas,” written and performed by the series’ songwriter and composer, Patrick Stump.

In an episode of the animated series Hamster & Gretel, Gretel, a young girl stands on a bench in a mall cafeteria. She holds a green slushie in her left hand and wears a teal blouse, an orange skirt, a yellow belt, green shoes, and a blue harness holding a hamster. Sitting on a bench opposite Gretel is Bailey, a young girl who wears red-framed glasses, a yellow turtleneck, green shorts, and yellow shoes. The two girls look at another girl who wears an orange T-shirt, a blue skirt, orange shoes, and an orange harness holding a mouse. Behind them are small stalls selling different foods.

Hamster & GretelSaturday, November 12, at 9:30 a.m. ET/PT on Disney Channel
First, in “Grounded,” a meat monster takes over the city, but its pint-sized super hero is grounded. Can Gretel (voiced by Meli Povenmire) elude her punishment to save her town? Then, in “Sleepover with the Enemy,” Gretel becomes suspicious of a new student in her class. Is her gut instinct correct?

In an episode of America’s Funniest Home Videos, host Alfonso Ribeiro stands with his hands placed in front of him. He wears a blue and green plaid suit with a blue button-down shirt and a blue tie. Behind him is a large screen reading “AFV” and a stage adorned with bright blue lights.

America’s Funniest Home Videos—Sunday, November 13, at 7 p.m. ET/PT on ABC
Hosted by Alfonso Ribeiro, this all-new episode is chock-full of hilarity including kids who don’t understand old technology or how to insert a letter into a public mailbox. Meanwhile, it’s a whodunit when twins blame each other for flooding a bathroom.

In an episode of Celebrity Wheel of Fortune, actors and comedians Paul Scheer, Luenell, and Mary Lynn Rajskub stand behind a large desk with digital screens displaying red, yellow, and blue, respectively. Scheer leans forward on the desk and wears a navy suit with a white button-down shirt. Luenell wears an animal print long-sleeve shirt with gold accents and black, thick-framed glasses. Quiz: Which Zootopia Town Do You Belong In?

By Victoria Hunt

Zootopia+ officially launched on Disney+ on November 9 and we can’t contain our excitement! Whether you like to take it slow in the countryside or prefer the excitement of a bustling metropolitan city, everyone will identify with a town or neighborhood in Zootopia. Take our quiz below to find out where you’d fit in best.

What is your ideal transportation?

2. What does your ideal day look like?

Which Disney Park do you want to hit next?

Which Disney sidekick are you taking with you?

Name a Disney attraction that you never get tired of:

Lastly, pick a 2000s Disney movie to watch:

Which Zootopia Town Do You Belong In?
Bunny Burrow

Judy, a bunny, stands in front of her parents. Her mom is wearing a pink dress and her father is wearing a plaid button-down shirt and denim overalls.

You’d be right at home amongst the residents of Bunny Burrow. You prefer the slower moments in life, like relaxing on the porch with a big glass of sweet tea. The hustle and bustle of a big city is not your speed. You’d much rather take a stroll and enjoy nature.
Savanna Central

If relaxing with a good book sounds like an absolute snooze-fest to you, Savanna Central is your type of city. Your extroverted nature will thrive with the endless possibilities that are at the tip of your fingers in this metropolis.
Sahara Square

You are the type of person who works hard and plays harder. Sahara Square is known for its warm weather and bustling nightlife. You’d fit right in with the other desert-dwelling mammals lying poolside, soaking up some rays.
Tundra Town

Snow animals are walking through the snow-covered streets. The buildings in the town have traditional Russian architecture. A snowflake statue is on the right side of the street.

You appreciate the simple things in life that make the everyday magical. The coldest borough, Tundra Town is known for its winterscape and gorgeous architecture. Despite the consistent freezing temperatures, you’ll find residents enjoying strolls through the downtown all year long.
Little Rodentia

Judy towers over the miniature town of Little Rodentia holding a large donut. The buildings reflect classic New York architecture.

Little Rodentia is for those of us who enjoy community. Stop into your favorite corner store to grab a few groceries (or a big block of cheese) and run into a neighbor or two. Little Rodentia is the type of town that makes you want to sip on some coffee, work on a crossword puzzle, and gossip with your friends at the local café.

Celebrate Native American Heritage Month with Films Dubbed in Native American Languages

By the D23 Team

Native American Heritage Month celebrates the incredible contributions of diverse Native American and Alaska Native communities to U.S. history and culture. And speaking of culture, one way The Walt Disney Company has been expanding its own content is to make more of it available to Native American communities by offering films dubbed in several Native American languages.

If you’re looking for a way to celebrate Native American Heritage Month in the comfort of your own home (or anywhere you can take a favorite streaming device!), here are several dubbed films currently available to stream—on either Disney+ or Hulu—and some interesting behind-the-scenes tidbits on how each dubbed version came to be:

A still from the 1942 animated film Bambi; in the forest, Bambi the deer is on the left, and a butterfly is resting on his tail. To his right are three rabbits looking up at him with smiles on their faces.

Bambi in Arapaho on Disney+
Disney’s 1942 animated classic was first dubbed in Arapaho in the early 1990s, when this language had had approximately 1,000 speakers. Unfortunately, there are now fewer than 60 speakers—so the film is a helpful way to preserve the language. The process was initially driven by Dr. Neyooxet Greymorning, currently a professor at the University of Montana.

When the dubbed version of the film was recently added to Disney+, the folks at Walt Disney Studios Mastering made extra sure the physical film was in good working condition, ready to be digitally mastered for streaming use. You can find the Arapaho version as a bonus feature on the streaming service.

In a still from 1977’s Star Wars: A New Hope, Luke Skywalker (Disney Legend Mark Hamill), Princess Leia (Disney Legend Carrie Fisher), and Han Solo (Harrison Ford) are standing together looking off-camera to the right. Han is holding a blaster-type weapon in his hand and pointing it at someone; Luke is also holding a blaster but is pointing it upwards.

Star Wars: A New Hope in Navajo on Disney+
This version of Disney Legend George Lucas’ 1977 blockbuster, the first of its kind, came about in 2013—and it’s all thanks to Star Warsfan Manuelito Wheeler, who emailed and called Lucasfilm consistently over a 16-year period to see if they’d be interested in making a Navajo-language dub of the film. His amazing persistence paid off; as he told our friends at StarWars.com in 2021, “This project, it welcomed Native people to be part of the Star Wars universe… Now, our Navajo young people just have this attitude of like, ‘Oh wow, cool.’ They’re excited about it. ‘Yeah! That’s what we do now. We can do it.’ Star Wars has the ability to do something like that.”

Look for the dubbed version of the film as a bonus feature on Disney+.

In a still from 2003’s Finding Nemo, Marlin the clownfish (on the left) is talking to Dory the blue tang fish (on the right). There are corals surrounding them.

Finding Nemo in Navajo on Disney+
This 2003 Disney and Pixar animated hit was Disney’s second film to be dubbed in Navajo, in 2016—and, like Star Wars: A New Hope, exclusively features members of the Navajo Nation who’d never worked as actors before! Alongside Navajo linguists, the cast worked with Rick Dempsey, senior vice president of Disney Character Voices, to bring their roles to life.

This version of the film also features an original song by Fall Out Boy frontman Patrick Stump—who is not Native American, but who sang the song in phoneticallyNavajo. Find this version as a bonus feature on Disney+.

In a still from 2022’s Prey, Naru (Amber Midthunder) is in a forest and is looking at someone whose legs we see to the right of the image. It appears to be raining. Naru has long dark hair and her arms are outstretched in a way that makes her look ready to do battle.

Prey in Comanche on Hulu in the U.S. / on Disney+ and Star+ internationally
This 2022 release from 20th Century Studios—the newest entry in the Predator film franchise—has the distinction of having its Comanche dub recorded by its original cast… who all learned their lines in multiple languages for just this reason. Jhane Myers, Prey’s executive producer, is Comanche (and Blackfeet) herself, and she spoke frequently of the importance of authenticity in the runup to the film’s release: “I’ve never seen a feature fully in my language,” Myers said at the time. “And one thing we do as Native people when we watch films, we watch to see if they can get one or two things right… For me to have the language in there, that was most important—and we pitched it that way to the studio.”

You can find the dubbed version of Prey on Hulu (on its own tab on the “details” page), and as a bonus feature on Star+ in Latin-American countries and Disney+ (Star) elsewhere internationally.
