5 Fantastic Things to Watch This Weekend Presented by State Farm®

By Andie Hagemann

Our Spidey senses are tingling, because four Spider-Man films debut on Disney+ this weekend! Beginning Friday, April 21, binge Spider-Man, Spider-Man 2, Spider-Man 3, and The Amazing Spider-Man on the streaming service… then conclude your web-tastic marathon with a viewing of Captain America: Civil War, which introduces Tom Holland as the high-flying Super Hero into the Marvel Cinematic Universe—also available on Disney+.

In a scene from Spider-Man, actor Tobey Maguire plays Peter Parker and hangs upside down on a home staircase.

Spider-Man (2002)—Available to Stream on Disney+
Peter Parker (Tobey Maguire) is a nerdy high school student, bullied by jocks and struggling to fit in, all while harboring a big crush on his neighbor Mary Jane Watson (Kirsten Dunst). But his life changes forever when a genetically altered spider bites him during a class field trip to a laboratory. The bite causes Peter to gain superhuman strength, clear vision, and the spider-like ability to cling to any surface. As Peter adjusts to his newfound powers, Norman Osborn (Willem Dafoe), an eccentric millionaire, transforms into the Green Goblin and threatens New York City; Peter, in turn, becomes Spider-Man to take him down. Spider-Man also stars James Franco, Cliff Robertson, Rosemary Harris, and J.K. Simmons.

In a scene from Spider-Man 2, Spider-Man fights Doc Ock, a cyborg with metal tentacles, on top of a subway car.

Spider-Man 2 (2004)—Available to Stream on Disney+
After two years fighting crime as Spider-Man, life is falling apart for Peter Parker (Maguire). M.J. (Dunst) is engaged to another man; Peter’s powers are fading; and the Super Hero is now super-consumed with self-doubt. Plus, Peter’s best friend Harry (Franco) hates Spider-Man! Things become even more complicated when Dr. Otto Octavius (Alfred Molina) is transformed into Dr. Octopus/Doc Ock, a cyborg with deadly metal tentacles, after a nuclear fusion experiment gone wrong. Doc Ock blames Spider-Man for the accident and seeks revenge. The film also stars Harris, Simmons, and Elizabeth Banks.

In a scene from Spider-Man 3, Spider-Man wears a black superhero suit and dangles upside down, looking at his reflection in a skyscraper window.

Spider-Man 3 (2007)—Available to Stream on Disney+
Peter (Maguire) and M.J. (Dunst) seem to finally be on the right track in their complicated relationship. However, when Peter’s Spider-Man suit turns black and takes control of him, his powers are enhanced—but so is the dark side of his personality. Peter must overcome the suit’s influence as two villains, Sandman (Thomas Haden Church) and Venom (Topher Grace), rise up to destroy him and his loved ones. Bryce Dallas Howard, James Cromwell, and Harris also star.

In a scene from The Amazing Spider-Man, actor Andrew Garfield plays Peter Parker/Spider-Man and holds actor Emma Stone as Gwen Stacy in his arms.

The Amazing Spider-Man (2012)—Available to Stream on Disney+
Peter Parker (Andrew Garfield) is an outcast high schooler, trying to figure out who he is and how he got to be the person he is today. The teen is also navigating his first crush: Gwen Stacy (Emma Stone). So when Peter discovers a mysterious briefcase that once belonged to his father, he begins to delve into his parents’ mysterious disappearance, a search that leads him to Oscorp and the lab of Dr. Curt Connors (Rhys Ifans)—his father’s former partner. However, as Peter clashes with Connors’ alter ego, The Lizard, he is forced to make some life-altering choices. Also starring Martin Sheen, Sally Field, Denis Leary, Campbell Scott, Embeth Davidtz, and Irrfan Khan.

In a scene from Captain America: Civil War, Spider-Man poses on top of building and holds Captain America’s shield.

Captain America: Civil War (2016)—Available to Stream on Disney+
With the public fearing the occasionally overzealous actions of Super Heroes, the government implements an accountability system for the Avengers… But this new system leads to a schism among the team of heroes: While Steve Rogers/Captain America (Chris Evans) believes Super Heroes should remain free without government interference, Tony Stark/Iron Man (Disney Legend Robert Downey Jr.) supports oversight. The debate escalates into an all-out feud, leading Natasha Romanoff/Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson) and Clint Barton/Hawkeye (Jeremy Renner) to choose a side. Tom Holland makes his first appearance in the MCU as teen hero Spider-Man, and quickly mixes it up with the famed Avengers.

The Little Mermaid, Elemental, and Haunted Mansion Grace the Cover of the Summer Issue of Disney Twenty-Three

By the D23 Team

Welcome, foolish mortals, to fun under the sea and elemental connections as Disney brings the heat with a slate of films that are sure to warm hearts—and provide some chills as well. To celebrate the start of the summer season, the new issue of Disney twenty-three will feature three covers highlighting some of the biggest films coming from Disney: The Little Mermaid, Elemental, and Haunted Mansion.

Each cover features never-before-seen artwork showcasing the main characters who will tell these stories on the big screen. For The Little Mermaid, Halle Bailey glistens under the sea as the reimagined live-action Ariel. The fire-and-water friends Ember (Leah Lewis) and Wade (Mamoudou Athie) share their smiles on the cover for Elemental. Meanwhile, down in New Orleans, Rosario Dawson (Gabbie) and co-stars Owen Wilson (Father Kent), Danny DeVito (Bruce), Chase W. Dillon (Travis), Jamie Lee Curtis (Madame Leota), Tiffany Haddish (Harriet), and LaKeith Stanfield (Ben) appear in the “dead center of the room” on the cover featuring Haunted Mansion. D23 Gold Members will receive one of the stunning covers at random and will be able to purchase additional covers at shopDisney.com in May while supplies last.

In 1989, Disney fans around the world were introduced to Ariel in The Little Mermaid as she gave everyone a glimpse into life under the sea. On May 26, fans will have the chance to dive back into the fathoms below with the reimagined live-action film. Bailey—joined by director Rob Marshall, co-star Daveed Diggs (Sebastian), and composer and Disney Legend Alan Menken—gives readers a glimpse into part of her world during an exclusive interview, including the extensive “tank work” she did to bring Ariel to life.

The summer issue also breaks down the elements of Pixar Animation Studios’ new film, Elemental, in theaters June 16. Dig deeper into the flow of the filmmaking process, including the origins of the story, the real-life inspiration for Element City, and the creative process of bringing to “life” these permeable people. Director Peter Sohn and co-stars Lewis and Athie share all these inside details and more to get readers fired up for Pixar’s story about this unlikely connection.

From opposites react to ominous attractions, the summer of hits continues when Disney’s Haunted Mansion creeps into theaters on July 28 and brings to life the happy haunts of the beloved Disneyland Park classic. Stars Dawson, Stanfield, and Haddish share behind-the-screams details that are sure to leave readers in good spirits. Director—and former Haunted Mansion attraction cast member at Disneyland Park—Justin Simien shares that “it’s such a refreshing and funny take on a ‘ride movie’ that also strikes this unexpectedly personal chord.”

The back cover of Disney twenty-three, featuring members of the Electric Mayhem band against different colored squares. Top row: Janice and Animal. Middle row: Lips, the logo for the Disney+ series The Muppets Mayhem, and Zoot. Bottom row: Dr. Teeth and Floyd Pepper.

The back cover of the issue features the Electric Mayhem Band in a cover created exclusively for Disney twenty-three to celebrate the May 10 release of the Disney+ Original series The Muppets Mayhem. Executive producers Bill Barretta (Dr. Teeth), Adam F. Goldberg, and Leigh Slaughter and co-executive producer Jeff Yorkes, as well as Dave Goelz (Zoot) and co-stars Lilly Singh and Tahj Mowry, share stories on how the show—which follows the band on its journey to record their first album—rocks out.

After four decades of crusades and crystal skulls, it might seem time for archeologist-turned-adventurer Indiana Jones (Harrison Ford) to retire his whip and fedora, but he’s got another quest to tackle in Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny, in theaters June 30. Ford is joined by co-star Phoebe Waller-Bridge (Helena) and director James Mangold in exclusive interviews detailing the storyline of the new film, the action-packed stunts, and living up to the legacy of the Indiana Jones franchise. Ford shares with Disney twenty-three that he “wanted to finish the job. I wanted to see the character at the end of his career. I wanted to round out the story, as it were. So much of the character is based on his prowess, and when his academic career finishes, I always wondered what would be left of him.”

The new issue, available exclusively to Gold Members of D23: The Official Disney Fan Club, also sets sail through 25 years of the Disney Cruise Line; looks back at 70 years of Peter Pan, one of Walt Disney’s favorite childhood fairy tales and his first starring role; and gives a sneak peek into what happens when mythical beings enter the hallowed halls of high school in American Born Chinese, a new series coming to Disney+ on May 24.

Also in the Summer 2023 issue of Disney twenty-three:

  • A visual tour of the traveling Walt Disney Archives exhibit Walt Disney and El Grupo: A Trip Through Latin America
  • A tribute to the life and legacy of Disney Legend, animator, director, and story artist Burny Mattinson
  • A special By the Numbers: Disney100 looking back at The Walt Disney Company from 1949–1973—the second in a four-part series
  • Regular features including D Society, Character Analysis, and Ask the Walt Disney Archives

Disney twenty-three is delivered directly to fans’ doorsteps and is offered exclusively to D23 Gold Members as a benefit of their membership. The latest issue will begin arriving before the end of May. For members looking to collect all three covers, they will be available exclusively on shopDisney.com while supplies last.

All-New Display Celebrates the Disney Bros. Story

By Francesca Scrimgeour and Julia Vargas, Walt Disney Archives

When Walt Disney first arrived in California during the summer of 1923, he moved in with his uncle, Robert Disney, at 4406 Kingswell Avenue in Los Angeles. Before he made the move out west, he had sent a pilot film, Alice’s Wonderland—which he had made back in Kansas City—to various distributors hoping to sell the novel film concept as a dedicated series.

In October, Margaret Winkler, an accomplished New York distributor, thrilled with the Alice Comedies concept, agreed to back the proposed series. The contract for the first year of production called for one short film a month—a daunting task, but one that Walt, with his brother Roy by his side, was willing to try and accomplish. Thus, on October 16, 1923, Walt and Roy’s first contract was signed, and the brothers were in business. They named their company the Disney Brothers Cartoon Studio—a testament to the communal faith in their creative endeavor that would drive their business for the ensuing decades, changing the face of entertainment forever. From these humble Hollywood beginnings, Walt and Roy’s organization would grow to reflect not only the ethos of the brothers’ creative and business acumen, but an intensely collaborative spirit.

A Creative Legacy: The Disney Bros. Story, a new exhibit from the Walt Disney Archives, includes a historical timeline of photographs of Walt and Roy O. Disney.

To celebrate this extraordinary partnership and foundation of the company’s 100-year history, the Walt Disney Archives recently unveiled a brand-new display entitled A Creative Legacy: The Disney Bros. Story. Located in the lobby of the Frank G. Wells Building on The Walt Disney Studios lot, this celebratory exhibit showcases the artistry, excellence, ingenuity, and perseverance that have defined the Disney brothers’ story. The display is open to Disney employees and their guests visiting The Walt Disney Studios and D23 Gold and Gold Family Members participating in The Official Walt Disney Studios Tour – Presented by D23, as well as to guests partaking in select Southern California itineraries with Adventures by Disney.

The first of two exhibit cases reflect the Disney brothers’ story through featured historical photographs from their childhood up through the earliest days at the studio. The central showcase, presented just outside the Walt Disney Archives offices, highlights four different disciplines that represent many landmark business endeavors of The Walt Disney Company: Animation, Live-Action, Television, and Parks & Resorts.

This thaumatrope, featured in the “Animation” section of the display, was used by Walt Disney in “The Story of the Animated Drawing” (1955) to illustrate the early history of animation.

Animation
Animation serves as the creative foundation of The Walt Disney Company and, appropriately, begins the story of this display. One of the items featured is the thaumatrope used by Walt Disney in “The Story of the Animated Drawing,” an episode of the Disneyland television series that aired on November 30, 1955. In his lead-in introducing the show, Walt demonstrates how to use the optical toy, explaining how it exhibits the principles of the “persistence of vision.” One side of the disc features the image of a bird, while the other shows a bird cage. When the disc is twirled, it creates the illusion of a combined impression of the bird inside the cage. Popular in the 19th century, the thaumatrope is recognized as an important antecedent of cinematography and the art of animation. Walt also discusses other animation novelties in this episode, such as the zoetrope and praxinoscope, examples of which are preserved in the Walt Disney Archives.

These vibrant stop-motion puppets were the primary cast in the opening title sequence of The Parent Trap (1961).

Live-Action
Well-established in the field of animation, the Disneys forayed into the live-action side of filmmaking, releasing their first fully live-action feature in 1950 with Treasure Island. This section of the display showcases items from the Walt Disney Archives that represent the studio’s range of iconic live-action films through the years, including prop books, merchandise, and concept art.

A number of classic Disney films begin with an opening sequence that helps to establish the premise of the ensuing story. For The Parent Trap (1961), starring Disney Legend Hayley Mills, the imaginative title sequence was produced in stop-motion animation by renowned artists T. Hee, Disney Legend Bill Justice, and Disney Legend X Atencio. The sequence was also set to the tune of the title song, “The Parent Trap,” by songwriters (and Disney Legends) Richard M. and Robert B. Sherman. This charming family of puppets was created using moveable arms and legs, felt hair, and snazzy outfits. Having these assets in the Walt Disney Archives allows the staff to preserve them as historical objects, which includes conservation work that protects their condition, so that they may continue to be shared with fans.

Nestled in the “Television” section of the display is the prop book Walt Disney’s The Art of Animation as featured on the Disneyland television series.

Television
It is no secret that Walt was a leader in television entertainment, and the shows he developed were testament to his storytelling prowess, imagination, and innovative spirit. Making his TV debut on One Hour in Wonderland in 1950, Walt quickly recognized the power of this new medium and used it to his advantage a few years later when building Disneyland.

The Disneys’ TV legacy is represented in the display through the title cels for the Walt Disney’s Wonderful World of Color series; the membership application sign for the Mickey Mouse Club; and the Talent Roundup Day costume worn by Mouseketeer Carl “Cubby” O’Brien on the popular children’s show. With TV being such a groundbreaking enterprise for Walt Disney Productions—bringing Walt himself into the homes of American families on a weekly basis—it was only natural to include a montage of several of his TV lead-ins. In one of the featured clips, Walt showcases the prop book titled Walt Disney’s The Art of Animation, which was used in “The Story of the Animated Drawing” (1955) and “The Plausible Impossible” (1956) episodes of the Disneyland anthology series. In “The Story of the Animated Drawing,” Walt introduces this book as a pet project intended to document the history of the animator’s craft. Walt goes on to explain the book as a resource where “...you can read about the artists who dreamed and experimented, had their failures and successes, but somehow never gave up trying to breathe life and movement into the intimate picture.” While the prop presented on television was merely a mockup, a published book of the same title, by biographer and legendary entertainment reporter Bob Thomas, would be released in 1958.

Among the historic documents and ephemera in the “Parks & Resorts” section is the Disneyland prospectus prepared by WED Enterprises in 1953, along with a Disney Cottage sticker issued to Roy O. Disney for the Walt Disney World project and the “Meet Your New Job” Disneyland Employee Handbook from ca. 1957.

Parks & Resorts
Partially as a result of the Disney brothers’ foray into television entertainment, Walt and Roy would revolutionize the amusement park industry. Famously, the idea of Disneyland was sparked in Walt’s imagination when he would take his two young daughters to carnivals, zoos, and small amusement parks, but often found himself sitting on benches eating peanuts while they experienced rides and had all the fun. Walt’s dream of a place where parents and children could have fun together evolved into the first Disney park, Disneyland.

The “Parks & Resorts” section of the exhibit is especially fitting in this space since Walt first thought of building his park on a strip of land just across Riverside Drive from the Disney Studios in Burbank. However, that acreage proved too small to hold all his ideas, thus leading him to Anaheim for his new venture.

This section of the display features early Disneyland merchandise, opening year brochures, and early Cast Member name tags, along with interoffice memos and commemorative plaques. An especially remarkable artifact is the unassuming blue binder housing an original copy of the Disneyland prospectus, which was prepared by WED Enterprises in 1953. This particular document was used by Roy, widely considered the financial genius of the Company, to present to potential investors and helped Walt achieve his dream of Disneyland.

A Creative Legacy: The Disney Bros. Story is open to Disney employees and their guests visiting The Walt Disney Studios in Burbank. D23 Gold and Gold Family Members can visit through The Official Walt Disney Studios Tour—Presented by D23, and guests traveling with Adventures by Disney can visit via the Disneyland Resort and Southern California trip and Disneyland Resort and Southern California Escape.

In concept art for The Cabins at Disney’s Fort Wilderness Resort – A Disney Vacation Club Resort, one of the resort’s refreshed cabins is seen, surrounded by trees and wilderness. A family is barbecuing and seated at several tables: one on the ground outside the cabin and one on the cabin’s porch. The cabin itself is square with an angular roof.

350+ Cabins Coming to Disney’s Fort Wilderness Resort & Campground

More news from Walt Disney World Resort and the good folks at Disney Vacation Club: Refreshed cabin hideaways are coming to Disney’s Fort Wilderness Resort & Campground! They’ll offer guests a private retreat within nature, all while keeping the comforts of home.

Nestled across 750 acres of scenic woodlands, proposed plans call for more than 350 new cabins to replace the existing cabins at the resort. The cabins would be built with an eye toward the environment, utilizing the footprint of the existing dwellings and taking advantage of more energy-efficient features.

“For more than 50 years, Disney’s Fort Wilderness Resort & Campground has offered guests the opportunity to explore nature with their loved ones while staying in the heart of Walt Disney World Resort,” Bill Diercksen, senior vice president and general manager of Disney Vacation Club, recently said. “We’re excited to continue to build upon the resort’s rich legacy and elevate the cabin experience for our members and all guests to enjoy for years to come.”

The Cabins at Disney’s Fort Wilderness Resort – A Disney Vacation Club Resort is projected to open in 2024 and would be the 17th Disney Vacation Club resort. Design concepts offer a fresh take on the current cabin experience and are inspired by the resort’s idyllic setting, while also paying homage to Fort Wilderness’ unique culture and heritage through the magic of Disney storytelling. Each proposed, stand-alone cabin offers spacious accommodations, sleeping up to six adults, and features a bedroom, bathroom, living room, full kitchen, and private patio. A select number of cabins are also expected to be dog-friendly.

As with all Disney Vacation Club resorts, the proposed cabins will continue to be open for reservations to all guests, including those who are not Disney Vacation Club members, based on availability.

The planned cabins are part of a collection of improvement projects underway at Disney’s Fort Wilderness Resort & Campground—including proposed pool and walking trail enhancements as well as expanded dining experiences at Trail’s End Restaurant and Crockett’s Tavern.

With the cabins just a boat ride away from Magic Kingdom Park, members and guests will have easy access to the theme parks and be able to enjoy the resort’s amenities, including horseback riding at the recently updated Tri-Circle-D Ranch, fishing, walking trails, pools, playgrounds, Chip ’n’ Dale’s Campfire Sing-A-Long, and dining and entertainment at Hoop-Dee-Doo Musical Revue. Campsite accommodations will also continue to be available for guests.

Disney and Pixar’s Elemental to Close Cannes Film Festival

Pixar Animation Studios returns to the renowned Cannes Film Festival for the world premiere of its new animated feature film Elemental on Saturday, May 27, ahead of its U.S. theatrical release in June. Debuting out of competition as the closing film of the 76th edition of the festival, Elemental is the fourth film from the studio to be selected for the event—joining previous favorites Up, Inside Out, and Soul.

Directed by Peter Sohn, Disney and Pixar’s Elemental is an all-new, original feature film set in Element City, where fire-, water-, land-, and air-residents live together. The story introduces Ember (voiced by Leah Lewis), a tough, quick-witted, and fiery young woman, whose friendship with a fun, sappy, go-with-the-flow guy named Wade (voiced by Mamoudou Athie) challenges her beliefs about the world they live in.

The voice cast includes Ronnie del Carmen as Ember’s soon-to-be retired dad, Bernie; Shila Ommi as Ember’s love-seeking mom, Cinder; Wendi McLendon-Covey as Wade’s stormy, Air-Ball-loving boss, Gale; Catherine O’Hara as Wade’s welcoming mom, Brook; Mason Wertheimer as Ember’s admiring neighbor, Clod; and Joe Pera as an overgrown city bureaucrat, Fern.

Pete Docter, Pixar’s chief creative officer, said this year’s return to Cannes is particularly special for the studio. “As we all emerge from our pandemic cocoons and come together in story rooms, animation dailies, and impromptu brainstorming sessions, it’s a joy and honor to have Pixar back on La Croisette,” said Docter, who also serves as the new film’s executive producer. “Directed by the extraordinary storyteller Peter Sohn, Elemental is so funny, full of heart, and, frankly, stunning to see. It was created for audiences to experience on the big screen, and I love that it’ll make its world premiere at Cannes.”

Elemental opens with Pixar’s all-new short, Carl’s Date, in U.S. theaters on June 16!

Sun-Sational Summer Set at Freeform

The good folks at Freeform have big plans this summer… namely, the returns of grown-ish and Cruel Summer and the debut of the new series Praise Petey. New episodes will be available to stream the next day on Hulu.

The second season of the smash-hit anthology series Cruel Summer will debut Monday, June 5, at 9 p.m. ET/PT with a special two-episode premiere before moving to its regular 10 p.m. timeslot. Set in an idyllic waterfront town in the Pacific Northwest, the next chapter of Cruel Summer follows the rise and fall of an intense teenage friendship.

Approaching the story from three different timelines surrounding Y2K, the story twists and turns as it tracks the early friendship between Megan, Isabella, and Megan’s best friend, Luke; the love triangle that blossoms; and the mystery that will impact all of their lives going forward. The series stars Sadie Stanley, Lexi Underwood, Griffin Gluck, KaDee Strickland, Lisa Yamada, and Sean Blakemore. Paul Adelstein and Braeden De La Garza recur.

Then, grown-ish will debut the first half of its sixth and final season on Wednesday, June 28, at 10 p.m. ET/PT. Justine Skye and Tara Raani have been upped to series regulars. Skye plays Annika, a funny, sharp, extremely ambitious future media mogul who chose Cal U because it was best for her brand, and Raani plays Zaara, a first-generation, queer Indian American and type-A overachiever with a lot of swagger.

After following in the footsteps of his big sister, Zoey (executive producer Yara Shahidi), and taking on her alma mater, Andre Johnson Jr., aka Junior (Marcus Scribner), makes moves to step out of his sister’s shadow and become a big man on campus. The series also stars Trevor Jackson, Diggy Simmons, and Daniella Perkins.

The network will then make its much-anticipated animated debut with Praise Petey, premiering on Friday, July 21, at 10 p.m. ET/PT with two back-to-back episodes each week as part of Family Guy Friday. The series follows Petey, a New York City “it” girl who has it all until her life comes crashing down around her. As luck would have it, a mysterious gift from her father gives her a new lease on life: She’s going to “lean into” modernizing his small-town cult!

The voice cast includes Annie Murphy, John Cho, Kiersey Clemons, Stephen Root, Amy Hill, and Christine Baranski. Praise Petey is from creator, writer, and executive producer Anna Drezen.

How the Proud Family Honors Autism Acceptance Month

By Andie Hagemann

The Disney+ Original series The Proud Family: Louder and Prouder continues to tell entertaining and hilarious stories, while highlighting culturally specific experiences of the Black community and addressing universal topics. Now in its second season, the series spotlights the topic of autism through the character BeBe (voiced by Aiden Dodson).

In the recent episode “BeBe,” the character repeatedly goes missing only to wind up in inexplicable places. Baffled by his actions, Trudy (voiced by Paula Jai Parker), Oscar (voiced by Tommy Davidson), and Penny (voiced by Kyla Pratt) seek medical attention, and in the process discover BeBe is autism. Actor and autism activist Holly Robinson Peete lends her voice to the character Dr. Lord, who operates a school for neurodivergent children and evaluates BeBe.

In honor of Autism Acceptance Month, Disney Branded Television hosted a virtual screening and Q&A with series creatives Bruce W. Smith and Ralph Farquhar; guest star Peete; and moderated by RespectAbility consultant Diane J. Wright. Dodson, who like his character is also autistic, later joined the conversation, donning a T-shirt reading “Team BeBe” and emblazoned with the character’s image.

When developing The Proud Family: Louder and Prouder, Smith and Farquhar wanted to continue the progress of the original series with trailblazing storylines and characters. Those conversations led to discussions about the Proud family’s youngest members BeBe and CeCe (voiced by Bresha Webb) and how to shape the now-slightly-older characters. “For some unexplained reason, we put a cape on BeBe and we started to examine him internally,” said Smith.

And while prepping for Season 2, Meredith Roberts, executive vice president, TV Animated, Disney Branded Television, requested an episode center around autism. “We didn’t want to do a special episode [on autism] and then never visit [it] again or explore the character beyond that episode,” recalled Farquhar. “We thought this would be a perfect trait to imbue his character with and then examine it in a holistic way—a total family way, not just the BeBe character.”

Farquhar and Smith enlisted the expertise of Peete, whose son R.J. was diagnosed with autism in 2000, to ensure the autism diagnosis experience—especially the within the Black community—is depicted authentically. Peete relished the opportunity to be a part of her family’s favorite show, both behind the scenes and voicing a character.

“When my son was diagnosed, there was zero representation of autism and neurodivergence on television, let alone from the African American point of view,” Peete said. “The viral clip of Dr. Lord diagnosing BeBe is one of the most gratifying things I have ever been part of. I didn’t write it, but it was a reimagination what I wish that developmental pediatrician had said on that day 23 years ago.” Peete also shared with Bruce that her son was also quite fond of capes, just like BeBe.

In addition to the inclusion of Peete and Dodson, Smith shared that one of the main story artists for The Proud Family: Louder and Prouder is autistic and requested to work on the scene where BeBe is diagnosed. “The artist wanted to take on that specific section and he told me after he had finished it, he never thought his talents would meet that specific subject matter,” Smith said.

The episode also marks the first time that audiences see Oscar bond with BeBe. “It took this journey with them,” said Smith. “This is Oscar’s only son and I think all those emotions were hitting him at that moment.”

Shared Peete, “That representation is so powerful because Black dads can struggle with [denial and acceptance]—and moms, too. Oscar is very stubborn and does not accept a whole lot; this is something that he had to really shift his heart to understand what he has moving forward. It was an amazing scene to see unfold before our eyes.”

Added Wright, “Another benefit that you may or may not have realized in the adult [autistic] community [is that] Black autistic men are the group that has the most to risk by being ‘out,’ and knowing who they are and recognizing themselves. So, showing a boy and a father bonding and discussing that, it paves the way for openness about growing into a Black autistic man.”

Both Farquhar and Smith are still overwhelmed with the positive reception from viewers long after the episode’s debut. “I hope to explore the BeBe character more,” Farquhar continued. “People come up to us all the time and say, ‘I want to tell you how much we love the BeBe episode,’ and how much they appreciate it.”

Season 1 and 2 of The Proud Family: Louder and Prouder are available to stream on Disney+.

Meet the Characters of Peter Pan & Wendy

By Jessica Benda

Peter Pan has whisked audiences through the nursery window before, but they’ll meet his newest incarnation in the upcoming Disney+ event movie, Peter Pan & Wendy.

The reimagined live-action tale follows 13-year-old Wendy, who declares she doesn’t want to leave home nor become an adult. When Peter Pan hears her plea, he ushers her and her brothers off to the magical world of Never Land. Thus begins a swashbuckling new adventure, which debuts on the streaming service on Friday, April 28.

While the story of Wendy and Peter Pan has persisted since J. M. Barrie’s enchanting 1904 stage play, we’ve yet to meet these particular versions of his characters... Find out a bit more about them below!

In the Darling nursery, Peter Pan hovers just above a chair in front of the open window. He points his sword with a smile.

Peter Pan (Alexander Molony)
The boy who doesn’t want to grow up is just as childish as in past renditions, but he’s a bit more carefree. Peter is constantly looking for new friends to join him on his adventures, so he jumps at the opportunity to explore with Wendy. While he may seem lighthearted, he’s incredibly serious about not growing up. His physical body may stay young, but Peter might find that he needs to do some maturing internally.

“Peter has learned that he can’t do everything by himself and that he needs his friends,” says co-screenwriter/executive producer Tony Halbrooks. “He’s gone from ‘I’m the kid who doesn’t need anybody’ to the kid who says, ‘I need people and Tinker Bell is important to me. Wendy and all the Lost Boys are important to me. And if you guys want to go home, you’re my friends, I’ll help you go home and grow.’”

Wendy Darling (Ever Anderson)
Fierce, passionate, and outspoken, growing up is the last thing Wendy Darling wants. While Peter Pan is often the titular character, Wendy is this story’s lead. Her plea to remain a child is the catalyst for their epic adventure. “Wendy, more often than not, is the one who drives the action, she’s the one who solves problems. Peter is a lot of fun, but he’s also someone who gets our heroes into trouble just as much as he gets them out of trouble,” says executive producer Adam Borba.

“In essence, Peter Pan has always been Wendy’s story,” adds producer Jim Whitaker. “It’s just that this version finally brings her story to the forefront. It is more focused on who and what Peter Pan is through Wendy’s eyes.”

On his ship, Captain Hook stands and appears worried as his crew is blurry in the background. In place of his right hand is a rusting hook, and his graying hair is topped with a black pirate hat. He wears a red coat with gold adornments.

Captain Hook (Jude Law)
Terrifying as ever, Captain Hook sails the water of Never Land, dodging a certain crocodile and always up to fight his sworn enemy: Peter Pan. He and Peter are two sides of the same coin, locked into a deep feud since they journeyed to Never Land together as kids. While he’s still the fierce pirate of legend, Hook might just have a hurt child within—and it’s something the film also explores. But like all nuanced villains, Hook sees himself as the hero. More than that, he believes he’s been wronged—and he might be right about that.

“It was very much at the heart of what made this Hook interesting and desirable to play,” says Law of Hook’s backstory. “It explains their rivalry and why Hook and the pirates are sort of stuck in Never Land. It also just gives good background and good insight into his personality. And for me as an actor, it gave me a lot more to play with than just a one-sided bad guy who hates everyone.”

John Darling (Joshua Pickering)
Ten-year-old John Darling begs to join his older sister Wendy on her journey to Never Land. Clad in a white nightshirt with his father’s hat and umbrella in hand, he is the most cautious of the Darling children. “John is very protective of his sister and little brother,” says Pickering. “His instincts are telling him that maybe this isn’t such a good idea, that maybe Peter Pan can’t be trusted.”

Michael Darling (Jacobi Jupe)
At just 8 years old, Michael is enamored by the thought of Never Land. The youngest of the Darling children is eager to embark on his first big adventure—though only while clutching his teddy, Mr. Bear!

A still of the enchanting Tinker Bell, who blows pixie dust out of her palms. She wears a whimsical green dress, and her hair is swept above her head. Her dainty wings flutter.

Tinker Bell (Yara Shahidi)
The famous fairy is much more than Peter Pan’s sidekick—and she proves it in Peter Pan & Wendy. Tinker Bell speaks in a fairy language only Peter can understand, and she’s careful with her magic fairy dust that allows others to fly.

“I appreciated that (director David Lowery) wanted to maintain the classic fairytale elements but update it so that all the characters get the representation they deserve,” says Shahidi. “It was so fun to take on Tinker Bell. I think once I got through the nerves of taking on such an iconic character, we had the best time.”

In the forest, Tiger Lily stands beside a white horse, guiding its reins as she looks off-screen. She wears Indigenous clothing and beading.

Tiger Lily (Alyssa Wapanatâhk)
Amid the chaos of Peter Pan, Hook, and the Lost Boys, Tiger Lily is a warrior who’s calm, collected, and mature. Not only is Tiger Lily a guiding star for Wendy throughout the story, but she also has a cherished familial relationship with Peter Pan. As his honorary older sister, she and Peter have been looking out for each other for years, and she comes to his rescue when he needs it.

“Tiger Lily is a strong and powerful woman who takes matters into her own hands,” explains Wapanatâhk (Bigstone Cree Nation). “She’s a fearless warrior whenever she needs to be. She can overcome anything. And she’s portrayed in a good way. She’s portrayed the way she should be, and that means everything to me.”

Mr. Darling (Alan Tudyk)
Shrewd and single-minded, Mr. Darling believes in a no-nonsense approach when it comes to raising his children, which Wendy often feels the brunt of. Mr. Darling feels Wendy is too old to be playing with her younger brothers and should focus on becoming a proper and poised young woman.

Mrs. Darling (Molly Parker)
Like her husband, Mrs. Darling wants what is best for her children, albeit with a kinder approach. A loving wife and mother, she encourages Wendy to be more responsible and a better role model to her younger brothers. While she empathizes with her daughter’s qualms about leaving home, she believes it’s the right place for her.

Smee (Jim Gaffigan)
Smee, Captain Hook’s trusted first mate, can always be counted on for a cup of tea. Though he’s somewhat of a father figure to Hook, he’s still clueless—prodding the creatives to question why Hook kept him as his second-in-command. “We created a backstory for them, whereby he saved him as a lad, and that’s why they ended up in this partnership,” says Gaffigan. “Hook is this petulant teenager, and Smee is the parent trying to dampen Hook’s enthusiasm for fighting Pan.”

All the Ways to Fly to Never Land on Disney+

By Jessica Benda

The sprawling island of Never Land brims with mischievous mermaids, fearsome pirates, and twinkling fairies. With so much to explore, it’s no wonder we want to keep going back! While the first route to Never Land is thrilling—follow the second star to the right and straight on ’til morning—the second may be more manageable. Disney+ whisks viewers off to Never Land with just the touch of a button.

The newest flight to Never Land is through Peter Pan & Wendy, which lands on the streaming service on Friday, April 28. The forever-young Peter Pan (Alexander Molony) whisks Wendy Darling (Ever Anderson) off on a thrilling journey, and he brings her brothers—and viewers—along for the ride!

In celebration of the upcoming Disney+ Original, we’ve compiled all the ways to get to Never Land on Disney+.

In the animated film Peter Pan, Peter leads the young Wendy, John, and Michael through the night sky over London. Peter wears green clothes with the tiny fairy Tinker Bell at his side. The moon is bright and full in the starry and semi-cloudy sky.

Peter Pan (1953)
Walt Disney Animation Studios first took viewers to Never Land in 1953 through the animated film Peter Pan, based on the characters created by playwright and novelist J. M. Barrie. The mischievous and good-natured Peter flies through the window of a London nursery, where he meets siblings Wendy, John, and Michael. With faith, trust, and pixie dust, Peter sweeps them off to Never Land for an unforgettable adventure.

Return to Never Land (2002)
Unlike her mother, Wendy, young Jane doesn’t fly to Never Land—she’s kidnapped. In the animated film Return to Never Land, Captain Hook and his pirates capture Jane from war-torn London after mistaking her for Wendy. She’s hauled aboard the Jolly Roger in an effort to lure out Peter Pan, who successfully rescues Jane but quickly finds that the real trouble is Jane’s stubborn nature: She refuses to believe in Never Land even as she stands on its soil.

In the animated Tinker Bell movie, Tink sits alone on the sand and fiddles with a small screw. A small rusting bell rests beside her. She wears her traditional short green dress, and her blond hair is pulled into a bun atop her head.

Tinker Bell (2008)
In the first film of the Tinker Bell series, viewers journey to one of the most magical parts of Never Land: Pixie Hollow. The home of the fairies abounds with fantastical features, such as bubbling brooks and sunflower meadows. Tink is often known for her short temper, but her movie shows her determination, kindness, and hard-working spirit as she struggles with her identity as a tinker-talent.

Tinker Bell and the Lost Treasure (2009)
The sequel to Tinker Bell sees our favorite fairy venturing out of Pixie Hollow and deeper into Never Land. A blue harvest moon is set to rise and rejuvenate the Pixie Dust Tree, as long as the light falls through a magical moonstone. When Tink accidentally breaks the stone just before the harvest moon, she realizes her temper has jeopardized all of Pixie Hollow. Climbing into a balloon, she sets off across the sea to find a legendary magic mirror to make things right.

Tinker Bell and the Great Fairy Rescue (2010)
Technically, this is the only Tinker Bell film that won’t take you to Never Land. Instead, Tink and her friends spend their summer on the equally beautiful mainland. When Tink gets trapped in a makeshift fairy house, she realizes it belongs to Lizzy, a young girl with a fierce love of fairies. After seeing Lizzie’s enthusiasm, Tink takes it upon herself to teach her all she needs to know about her species.

In the animated Jake and the Never Land Pirates series, Jake and his friend Cubby play baseball on the shore of a beach. They both wear mitts and toss the ball between them under Never Land’s blue sky.

Jake and the Never Land Pirates (2011–2016)
There’s more than one pirate crew on Never Land! In Jake and the Never Land Pirates, Captain Hook is challenged by his rival captain, Jake, as well as his partners-in-crime. The Disney Junior series follows Jake on his adventures on the shores and seas of Never Land, where he sails aboard his living pirate ship, Bucky.

In the animated film Secret of the Wings, Tinker Bell and her sister Periwinkle face each other as they meet for the first time. They stand in an icy cavern in the Winter Woods and smile at each other. Periwinkle has short white hair that sweeps up toward the sky, and she wears a baby blue shirt and capri pants. Tinker Bell wears her traditional short green dress with matching leggings and warm boots. They have matching wings.

Secret of the Wings (2012)
In Pixie Hollow, it’s forbidden to venture past the border into the Winter Woods. Therefore, it’s no surprise that Tinker Bell does it anyway. It is a surprise when she discovers she has a sister just beyond the border! Periwinkle, a frost-talent fairy, was born of the same laugh as Tinker Bell, but they’re kept apart from each other’s worlds. Still, after spending a day with her sister, Tink realizes she can’t let her go.

The Pirate Fairy (2014)
Journey to Skull Rock in The Pirate Fairy, which even includes a young Captain Hook! Zarina, a dust-keeper fairy, steals Pixie Hollow’s Blue Pixie Dust and joins forces with Never Land’s pirates. Tink and her friends hurry to retrieve the dust, but their talents are switched along the way! As they race against time, only Tink and her friends can stop Zarina and save Pixie Hollow.

Tinker Bell and the Legend of the NeverBeast (2014)
In this 2014 film, the Tinker Bell series shifts the spotlight to her good friend Fawn, an animal-talent with a knack for adventure. She meets the NeverBeast, a massive legendary creature, and quickly builds a close bond. When other fairies launch a hunt for the supposedly dangerous NeverBeast, Fawn recruits her friends to rescue him.
