Justin Simien: From Disney Parks Cast Member to Haunted Mansion Director

Frightful delights await in Walt Disney Pictures’ Haunted Mansion, now in theaters.

Inspired by the classic theme park attraction of the same name, Haunted Mansion follows a mother and son who enlist a motley crew of so-called spiritual experts to help rid their home of supernatural squatters. The film is directed by Justin Simien, who developed a deep appreciation for the attraction as a student at Chapman University in the early 2000s. “In college, I was a ride host for the Grizzly River Run attraction,” Simien recalls. “It was amazing to do that in film school, because it was like I got another education in cinema.”

That’s because Simien would spend his downtime mingling with the 999 happy haunts of New Orleans Square, marveling at the physical reactions certain beats in the story would elicit. Even then, he knew there was an “inherently cinematic” quality to the attraction: “I remember experiencing Haunted Mansion back in the day and thinking, ‘What is this? How do I do this in a movie? How do I make a person feel this way?’ Anything is possible in a movie, and I would think about it a lot. But I didn’t have an answer to that until this movie.”

(In fact, Simien had been mystified by the Haunted Mansion attraction ever since a family vacation to Walt Disney World Resort, when “a hitchhiking ghost in a mirror appeared to be riding with me out the exit,” he recalls. “At 8, I figured it was a trick, but I couldn’t work out how. For years I wondered if that ghost was still hitchhiking with me in the real world.”)

To preserve the attraction’s charm onscreen, filmmakers used practical effects whenever possible. “People use the term ‘smoke and mirrors,’ and the attraction literally uses smoke and mirrors—the Pepper’s Ghost effect—to make you believe in ghosts,” Simien says. “It is classic Disney in that way: ‘This is not possible, and yet, it’s right in front of my own eyes and it has a physicality to it that I can’t explain.’ When you see the ghosts waltzing in the dining room, you know they’re not really there, but they’re somewhere; they’re physical. That kind of ‘how did they do that?’ quality was essential for me to take into this movie.”

While Haunted Mansion features state-of-the-art digital effects, Simien notes, “It was important to me that the film never felt like it took place in a digital void. There should always be a sense of wonder as to how the effect was achieved. To this end, we built practical sets, including giant Mansion interiors in both normal and ‘ghost realm’ colors, which allowed us to explore these different spaces in real time with our cast rather than relying upon VFX. There were tracks under the set to move chairs being ‘dragged by ghosts’ as well as people holding filaments and puppeteering the many mysteriously floating objects around the house. Most of the ghosts were filmed practically with people in costumes and prosthetics, often hanging from wires, before being enhanced digitally to ensure the cast could truly interact with each other whether playing the living or dead.”

As the film opens in theaters, Simien is thinking a lot about his evolution from cast member to director. “It’s surreal. It’s an honor. It’s a responsibility,” he says. “Sometimes as an artist, you encounter work and you just know in your bones how to do it. The point of view was already in me. My family is from Louisiana, and I’ve always been obsessed with the attraction. It feels really kismet and weird to direct this, and I probably won’t be able to fully articulate what it’s been like for some time until this is over. I am still very much in it.”

The Wonderful World of Mickey Mouse Concludes by Returning to Mickey’s Roots with “Steamboat Silly”

Mickey Mouse has lived many lives over his nearly 100 years. He’s been a sorcerer, composer of silly symphonies, and cultural icon. However, in “Steamboat Silly—the final short of The Wonderful World of Mickey Mouse—the most famous mouse in the world returns to his roots.

The short—now streaming on Disney+—starts harmlessly enough. Mickey and his friends Donald, Daisy, Goofy, and Minnie sit down to enjoy some of Mickey’s home movies. That includes the one that started it all: 1928’s Steamboat Willie. However, soon Mickey finds himself overrun by hundreds of his monochrome character from the original short, resulting in a madcap adventure.

Paul Rudish—the executive producer and supervising director of The Wonderful World of Mickey Mouse—pointed out that a madcap Mickey is vital to this final short, and to the history of the character himself.

“Our goal was to bring him back to the new audiences,” Rudish said. He added that the short’s silly nature harkens back to the original Mickey Mouse cartoons of the ’20s and ’30s thanks to their surrealism, physical comedy, and pantomime acting.

The Wonderful World of Mickey Mouse—which started in 2013 as simply Mickey Mouse shorts—updated Mickey for a new generation using some of the character’s initial rough edges. He’s still the lovable company mascot that he’s been for decades, but now with a little extra spice as the zany scamp he was from the start.

“I wanted to return to that flavor of Mickey and that vibe, but not replicate them,” Rudish said. “We didn’t want to go, ‘Look, here’s a 1930s cartoon.’ We wanted to take the sensibilities of those things but then put that through the lens of a team of modern artists.”

Mickey Mouse, wearing red shorts and yellow shoes, dances next to a black and white Mickey Mouse (inspired by Steamboat Willy) and three skeletons (inspired by The Skeleton Dance) in a scene from The Wonderful World of Mickey Mouse: "Steamboat Silly."

“Steamboat Silly” balances the past and present of Mickey while also maintaining the comedy—and sometimes even avant-garde essence—of Rudish’s shorts. For example, The Wonderful World of Mickey Mouse crew not only drew inspiration from the early days of Mickey in terms of look and feel for “Steamboat Silly,” but also in terms of its sound. This included a technique from the 1920s in which the tempo of the short’s music and action syncs up—a term that is still known as “Mickey Mousing” in Hollywood.

“There’s a portion in the middle, a very action-packed set piece that takes up maybe the middle third of the cartoon, which in particular is at a very, very high tempo, which was used a lot in cartoons in the ’20s and ’30s,” said Christopher Willis, the shorts’ composer. Willis mentioned that a lot of the cartoons from the early days of animation took popular songs and sped them up. He tried to replicate that for this final short.

“I wanted a tempo so high that I wasn’t sure at first if the band would be able to play that quickly,” he said.

“Steamboat Silly” is not just a celebration of Mickey, however. It’s a celebration of Disney as the company commemorates its 100th anniversary. The short is chock full of Disney easter eggs from 1929’s The Skeleton Dance, 1941’s Dumbo, and 1955’s The Mickey Mouse Club.

Mickey Mouse parades down the street wearing a red and gold bandleader uniform in a scene from TheWonderful World of Mickey Mouse short "Steamboat Silly."After more than 120 episodes, the Mickey Mouse shorts are coming to an end, but its impact is undeniable. The shorts have won multiple Emmy® and Annie Awards, been screened at the Venice Film Festival, and led to Mickey & Minnie’s Runaway Railway at Disney’s Hollywood Studios in Florida and Disneyland Park in California—Mickey’s first Disney Parks ride-through attraction.

But Mickey has been beloved ever since he stepped foot on that steamboat in 1928. What made this latest version so popular?

“Our Mickey is a bit flawed,” Rudish said. “I think people responded to that. They root for the cheerful optimist, but it’s not always an easy road.”

Also, Mickey still represents “the ongoing message of if you’ve got big dreams and you really try hard, you can make them come true,” according to Rudish.

“Mickey has always been an icon of that idea,” he said. “It’s inspirational.”

Go Behind the Scenes of The Slumber Party

By Emily Hewitt

The new Disney Original Movie The Slumber Party takes a classic scenario and adds a comic twist. The film, which premieres later this week, depicts the hilarious aftermath of a hypnotism at a sleepover birthday party gone wrong. The film stars Darby Camp as Megan, Emmy Liu-Wang as Paige, Valentina Herrera as Anna Maria, and Alex Cooper Cohen as Veronica.

Before the movie premieres on Disney Channel on Thursday, July 27, at 8 p.m. ET and Disney+ the following day, D23 sat down with the leading cast to hear funny behind-the-scenes stories and what they hope viewers take away from the new film.

The Characters’ Stories
In the movie, Megan, Paige, and Veronica, wake up with no memory of the night before and must retrace their steps to find the missing birthday girl, Anna Maria. The four characters each bring something different to the film. Paige is the sassy, bold friend who radiates confidence. Liu-Wang said she is very similar to her character from the one-liners to her dry sarcasm. Throughout the film, Paige becomes more mature and responsible while learning to handle new situations.

Lui-Wang’s character is juxtaposed by Camp’s character, Megan, who struggles to try new things. Camp said that seeing Megan grow and face her fear of being embarrassed might inspire kids to do the same.

Her character awakens to find one of her eyebrows has been shaved off. While Camp says she adjusted to the one eyebrow look, even thinking it looked cool, luckily, she didn’t have to sacrifice her own brow for the role. The look was achieved through a combination of silicone prosthetic and makeup.

“For them to get the shape for the little prosthetic they had to do a molding of my face shape, which was such a cool experience,” Camp said.

Herrera’s character, Anna Maria, and Cohen’s character Veronica, bring an interesting dynamic to the story, as soon-to-be-stepsisters.

Anna Maria is against her father marrying Veronica’s mother and Herrera got into her character’s emotional state of mind by writing a diary as Anna Maria.

“When you’re writing in your diary, that’s when you’re most vulnerable and that’s when you don’t expect anyone to read it,” Herrera said.

On the flip side, Cohen provides comedic relief.  Cohen prepared by reviewing her funny moments with the director, Veronica Rodriguez, and putting the finishing funny touches on each of her humorous lines.

Given the diversity of characters, Liu-Wang hopes audiences can relate to at least one character’s traits or struggles. Camp said she believes the film will help people of all ages learn to be their most authentic selves.

“I think especially young kids, I hope what they can take away is how it’s okay to be different and it’s good to celebrate your differences with your friends and family,” Camp said.

Behind the Scenes Stories
Although this film isn’t a musical, audiences can expect a brief High School Musical inspired number from Veronica and Paige’s brother, Mikey who is played by Dallas James Liu, in the film.

“When we were shooting it, we had a lot of fun with it. There was one instance where he started singing in falsetto, so I was singing down here (in a low voice) and after we finished, after we cut, everybody burst out laughing,” Cohen said.

In addition to collaborating with one another, the cast also had the opportunity to work with ducklings. Cohen’s character held a duck named Bill in her fanny pack almost the whole film and by the end, she was called the “duck whisperer.”

A duck audition was held specifically for the part of Bill to ensure the most well-trained ducks were selected to play the part. Yes, that’s ducks, plural. Alex wasn’t able to work with the same duckling throughout the film process because ducks grow at a fast pace, so Bill had to repeatedly be replaced by younger ducklings, Cohen said.

Working with ducks isn’t all fun and games though. When one of the baby ducks pooped in Cohen’s hand, she put her hand out. Fearing the duck was going to fall, Liu-Wang went to catch the duck and the poop fell into her hand which paused shooting for 15 minutes.

Slumber Party Stories
In real life, Liu-Wang had a slumber party similar to the one in the film. Her two best friends slept over at her house where they were meant to all sleep on her couch. However, in the middle of the night Liu-Wang felt homesick and spent the night upstairs with her parents. Her friends woke up the next morning to find her gone, much like Anna Maria seems to be missing in the film.

Unfortunately, the cast didn’t throw a slumber party of their own off set, but when asked by D23 which Disney character they’d invite to their own slumber party, they didn’t hesitate. Cohen’s favorite film is Toy Story so she would love to have Buzz Lightyear at a slumber party. Meanwhile, Herrera said she’d invite Veronica, the character played by Cohen, to add humor to any sleepover shenanigan.

“I think she would have a lot of stuff up her sleeve, and she would be able to get us into anywhere with her parkour,” Herrera said.

Camp’s favorite movie since she was little has been The Little Mermaid and for her 10th birthday, she even had a mermaid-themed slumber party. Thus, it would be a dream come true to have a slumber party with Halle Bailey, who plays Ariel in the live-action The Little Mermaid.

Liu-Wang feels like her funny personality would mesh well with Mushu, from Mulan.

“I feel like we would just stay up all night telling jokes or hang out. He would make me laugh uncontrollably in any situation,” Liu-Wang said.

Where Spirits Dwell with Disney’s Haunted Mansion

By Courtney Potter

Note: Interviews for this article were held before the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes.

Your lively glow betrays an aura of anticipation, almost as though you sense an exhilarating development... That’s right: It’s nearly time for Disney’s Haunted Mansion to creep its way into theaters!

In the new film, inspired by the classic theme park attraction, widowed New York doctor Gabbie (Rosario Dawson) and her son Travis (Chase W. Dillon) move to New Orleans and into a whopper of a “fixer upper,” hoping to transform it into a bed and breakfast... but wind up enlisting a motley crew of so-called spiritual experts—including Father Kent (Owen Wilson), a hipster priest; Ben (LaKeith Stanfield), a down-on-his-luck scientist who specializes in paranormal activity; Harriet (Tiffany Haddish), a French Quarter psychic who may be more powerful than she realizes; and cantankerous Professor Bruce Davis (Danny DeVito) of Tulane University—to help rid it of supernatural squatters.

Directed by Justin Simien (a former Disneyland Park cast member), Haunted Mansion also stars Daniel Levy as a quirky fellow bed and breakfast owner named Vic, Jared Leto as the Hatbox Ghost, and Jamie Lee Curtis as the iconic Madame Leota.

D23: The Official Disney Fan Club was lucky enough to hear exclusively from Dawson, Stanfield, and Haddish—as well as Simien—about what it was like to join the mansion’s 999 happy haunts; their memorable shoot; and what they hope audiences take away from this ghoulishly delightful film! To read more about Haunted Mansion, make sure to drag your bodies to the latest edition of Disney twenty-three, D23’s quarterly publication.

In an image from Disney’s Haunted Mansion, from left to right, Gabbie (Rosario Dawson), Harriet (Tiffany Haddish), Ben (LaKeith Stanfield), and Father Kent (Owen Wilson) are standing in one of the mansion’s large rooms and are looking up toward the right at the ceiling. They have concerned looks on their faces. Harriet is wearing an elaborate headwrap, and Father Kent is wearing a black fedora and other ecumenical garb.

Considering the initial prospect of taking part in Haunted Mansion, “There’s a lot that excited me about it, obviously,” says Dawson. “I think it’s an amazing attraction, one of the most beloved ones; you just have such fond memories of it. And I love Disneyland and Walt Disney World; I think [those kind of memories are] what makes those resorts so special.” Plus, the actress needed a break from the more dramatic projects she’d previously been working on. “This showed up and I thought, ‘Are you kidding? Yes!,’” she adds, chuckling. “So I just laughed for a few months! I knew I was gearing up for Ahsoka as well, and that was going to be so intensive, and I just wanted to go in a different direction. And wow, did I?! It was like a roller coaster of a different direction, and it was amazing.”

Stanfield was similarly excited to be involved in the project, especially something so different from his previous films. “Some of my favorite movies of all time are Disney movies,” he explains. “The things that Disney’s created for youth have been consistently enriching parts of their lives. So when they approached me for this opportunity, I was really surprised; I wasn’t expecting that at that point in my career... and I thought, ‘Well, this might be an opportunity for me to provide a kid with the experience I had when I was younger.’” And speaking of childhood, director Simien grew up on the Disney renaissance of the 1980s and ’90s—and then found himself working for the very company that enthralled him as a child. “To be in film school and working at Disneyland Park, I was in awe of the sheer detail that goes into that immersive kind of storytelling.”

In an image from Disney’s Haunted Mansion, Harriet (Tiffany Haddish) is coming through a beaded curtain, looking at Father Kent (Owen Wilson), who’s facing her—with his back towards the camera—at the left of the image. She is wearing an elaborate headwrap, several pieces of jewelry, and a patterned dress with a cinched vest over it. The room is dimly lit.

As for Haddish, the actress admits, “Let me tell you, I’m a big Disneyland fan! But when I was a kid, I used to be scared of the Haunted Mansion!” An elementary school field trip changed all that: “I thought, ‘This time I have to be brave,’ right? So I’m in there and I’m just thinking, ‘Wow, this is actually really beautiful. This is like real art!’ And every time after that, Haunted Mansion would be the first thing I had to get on.” So when the chance to be in the new film presented itself, she continues, “Before they could even finish their sentence, I said, ‘Yes! Let me read the script! May I please contribute? Yes, yes, yes, yes!’”

Filming both on location in New Orleans and at Trilith Studios in Atlanta was particularly unforgettable—chiefly due to incredible, attraction-informed sets devised by production designer Darren Gilford (another Disney Parks-related alum; he once interned for Walt Disney Imagineering) and team. “It was so wild, because everyone was ‘ooh-ing’ and ‘aah-ing’ about it even before we got there,” admits Dawson. “The amount of detail, just the scale of it—everyone was flipping out. They couldn’t have prepared you... It was really mind-blowing, honestly. There were a lot of TikToks that were done.”

“It felt like I was a little girl again,” adds Haddish. “It’s super-sized, right? I’m just walking through it like, ‘What are these spider webs made of? What is that made of? What is this made of? Who did that? Who designed this right here?’ I’m asking them a thousand questions and I’m just like—I never wanted to leave the set! I always wanted to hang out on set because it felt like I was hanging out at the Haunted Mansion at Disneyland!” That attention to design was of utmost importance to Simien: “The set was a constant source of inspiration,” the director says. “It was really important to us, with a movie like this, to shoot as much as we could practically—to ground the audience in the film’s reality. The sheer level of painstaking detail that went into such a large practical set was simply awe-inspiring. Darren and his team completely outdid themselves, and yet paid such careful homage to the original attraction.”

In an image from Disney’s Haunted Mansion, Travis (Chase W. Dillon) and Gabbie (Rosario Dawson) are huddled together, looking at something off-screen to the left. They have concerned looks on their faces. Travis is wearing a bike helmet and a robe; Gabbie is wearing an orange and yellow striped top and a flowered skirt. They appear to be in the mansion’s dining room, which is dimly lit; a long table is behind them, with some candelabras placed on top. Long thin windows can be seen in the background.

But it wasn’t just the sets that made the shoot so noteworthy. “The conversations that Justin and I had were probably some of my favorites in developing this character,” Dawson says. “Reminiscing about my grandmother and what she was like—and feeling that from the images that they were showing me of how they envisioned Gabbie; adding my touch to that. My grandmother was always super put-together, and she had such an incredible style... Even though she always looked so glamorous, she was always ready to dig in. So a lot of that went into building Gabbie: her look, her behavior, and even why she would get a house like this—a massive undertaking. It was really fun to see how Gabbie relates to this house.”

As for Stanfield’s Ben, “It’s a fun journey to go on with him,” the actor explains. “Some of these perennial questions are ones that we’ve been asking ever since the beginning of mankind, and now we’re here to ask Ben on this public stage. But what comes with that is a character that’s witty, funny, charming, sometimes sad, sometimes very excited and happy—running the gamut of most human emotions. He’s a really good person to go on this journey with because then it’s just fun and imaginative.”

And Haddish was especially charmed by her work with Simien: “He never made me feel insecure or uncomfortable,” she admits. “It was always, ‘Let’s level up. Let’s try something different. Let’s try something new.’ That’s fun, when you get to play; when you have a director that challenges you. I just loved working with him. I felt like I grew a lot as a performer.”

In an image from Disney’s Haunted Mansion, from left to right, Father Kent (Owen Wilson), Gabbie (Rosario Dawson), Ben (LaKeith Stanfield), Harriet (Tiffany Haddish), and Professor Davis (Danny DeVito) are standing behind a table, on which is displayed a large crystal ball. Inside the ball, we can see the back of someone’s ghostly head; while we can’t see her face, we know it is Madame Leota. Father Kent, Gabbie, Ben, and Harriet are wearing pajamas; Prof. Davis is wearing a button-up shirt with pens in the front pocket. Harriet is smiling. To the left of the group is some sort of fire pit or fireplace.

All told, the excitement the cast feels about audiences finally seeing the finished product is palpable. “I think it’s just really smart and very clever,” says Dawson. “And it’s definitely going to have some scary bits... There’s so much attention and care put into it because this is such a beloved property. You just feel it. There’s just something about it that feels really warm and fun and creepy at the same time—in a good way! It gives you those good spooky goosebumps.” But it’s not just the spirits that make this film special: “These characters, by the end of the movie we’re a family,” explains Haddish. “We’ve had this experience together—and it’s pretty awesome that we were able to accomplish what we accomplished. I hope that people take home that yes, you may have your family, but there’ll be scenarios where things happen and it’s okay to bond and work with others.”

Director Simien echoes Haddish’s sentiment. “The movie is incredibly funny and heartfelt,” he explains. “Of course the fun and scares are there, as is the lore of the mansion. But [screenwriter] Katie Dippold’s way into the story was this set of eccentric characters who desperately need a found family—and we worked hard to bring that aspect of the screenplay to life.”

What Guests Can Expect From San Fransokyo Square at Disney California Adventure Park

By Emily Hewitt

Multicultural food, landmarks inspired by San Franciscan and Japanese icons, and merchandise can be expected from Disneyland Resort’s most recent addition, San Fransokyo Square.

Beginning August 31, visitors will be able to step into the iconic city from Walt Disney Animation Studios’ Academy Award-winning film Big Hero 6 in Disney California Adventure Park. With story points from the film and two series—Big Hero 6 The Series and Baymax!—to pull from, Walt Disney Imagineering Art Director Michael Dobrzycki said there are several show and film references throughout the land.

In this artist’s rendering of part of the new San Fransokyo Square area of Disney California Adventure at Disneyland Resort, a red building, called Rita’s Turbine Blenders, features a koi fish turbine on top of it. A walkway beside the building leads to more buildings in the distance, with signs in Japanese and English.

Landmarks
As the Pacific Wharf area transforms into San Fransokyo Square, several familiar landmarks will remain such as Ghirardelli Soda Fountain and Chocolate Shop, a San Francisco-founded company. A koi fish turbine, which powers San Fransokyo in the film, will be added and new lanterns will be hung outside. On the inside will be an animated mural showing the daily life of San Fransokyo, just as it previously showed scenes from the daily life of San Francisco.

We are, of course, in the footprint of what would be San Francisco, but San Fransokyo is this alternate and parallel reality,” Dobrzycki said. “So, it makes sense that if there’s a Ghirardelli in our San Francisco, there’s a Ghirardelli in our San Fransokyo as well.”

In this artist’s rendering of part of the new San Fransokyo Square area of Disney California Adventure at Disneyland Resort, the red San Fransokyo Gate Bridge hovers over a body of water and a sign on it reads “San Fransokyo Square.”

There will also be several landmarks from the film added to the land, including the 54-foot San Fransokyo Gate Bridge which will be the “gateway” to San Fransokyo, Dobrzycki said.

Once the bridge is crossed, specific San Fransokyo music will be heard. To build the land’s soundtrack, Dobrzycki and his team started with 2014-era J-pop songs—the year the film was released—and a loop of music from the Japan Pavilion in EPCOT. Four songs from The Happy Ride with Baymax at Tokyo Disneyland were also added to the soundtrack, along with contemporary J-pop songs. If you are in the land for 90 minutes, you will hear the whole soundtrack loop.

At night, the “Port of San Fransokyo” sign will be lit up in neon letters, just as it appears at the beginning of the film.

In this artist’s rendering of part of the new San Fransokyo Square area of Disney California Adventure at Disneyland Resort, green, red, and yellow chairs and wooden tables sit under an overhang of a building with a sign reading “ Port of San Fransokyo Cervecería.”

The Port of San Fransokyo Cerveceria will be the new, go-to place for draft beverages and seltzers, so guests can choose from a selection of beers and pair it with the new Garlic Pinwheel Chips Mix.

Hamada Bot Shop is where Hiro Hamada and the Big Hero 6 team improve their hi-tech gear. This is where you will be able to meet Hiro and Baymax!

In this artist’s rendering of part of the new San Fransokyo Square area of Disney California Adventure at Disneyland Resort, a brick building and a wooden building meet to form a corner and Baymax pops out of a doorway in the wooden building. Stanchions form an empty queue area around a tree, leading to Baymax.

“We’re actually creating a portico area for Baymax to come out to meet the guests in,” Dobrzycki said.

Near the Hamada Bot Shop, guests will see signage for Good Luck Alley—which in the film is a gambling den where robot makers challenge one another as their robots compete in the evenings. On the other side of the alley, guests will come to the San Fransokyo Maker’s Market.

In this artist’s rendering of part of the new San Fransokyo Square area of Disney California Adventure at Disneyland Resort, a storefront shows a variety of merchandise such as Baymax plushies. There are posters above the store that show robots with red X’s over them. A sign reads “San Fransokyo Maker’s Market” and is also written on another sign in Japanese.

At the San Fransokyo Maker’s Market, defeated bots are picked apart so makers can build new creations. The San Fransokyo Maker’s Market will be filled with merchandise for guests to choose from.

In this photo of a merchandise display, a small red shirt features Baymax with red bandages all over him, a larger white shirt sports a black outline of Baymax, and a black ball cap shows Baymax lying down with Mochi the cat lying on his stomach.

Merchandise
Three pieces of merchandise will debut in the San Fransokyo Maker’s Market the day the land opens, Kimberly Wilson, Integration Manager, Retail Product Optimization for Disneyland Resort, said. These will be a white adult T-shirt featuring a black outline of Baymax, a red children’s T-shirt featuring Baymax covered in red bandages, and a black ball cap featuring Baymax lying down with Mochi the cat lying on his stomach.

Additional merchandise options will include phone cases, AirPod cases, Apple Watch straps, a plush Baymax toy, magnets, and even a shirt featuring Baymax that says “Hugs All Day, Everyday” for the furry friends of guests.

A vending machine will offer four different collectible medallion designs. The images on the medallions include Baymax, wind turbines, the San Fransokyo Gate Bridge, and one that has a combination of Baymax, San Fransokyo’s logo, and two kanjis representing knowledge and courage.

In this artist’s rendering of part of the new San Fransokyo Square area of Disney California Adventure at Disneyland Resort, a building with a pink sign reading “Aunt Cass Cafe” sits on a wooden deck with black chairs and brown tables outside. Images of two white cats are on either side of the sign, smiling, and colorful lanterns line the roof with Baymax’s face on them.

Food

Aunt Cass Café
At Aunt Cass Café, the signature Bay Area dish, clam chowder in a bread bowl, will have miso added to it, giving it a subtle umami flavor, Chef Jeremiah Balogh, Culinary Director of Disney California Adventure, Candy Production, Park Banquets, and Festivals, said. Bread bowls will also serve up curry with rice, green onion, and pickled ginger.

A bread bowl sits on a wooden table with a blue wall behind it. Inside is a curry with a rice ball on top, pickled ginger, and chopped green onion.

“Boudin Bakery is still part of our San Fransokyo story, and so you’re going to continue to see some of those amazing flavors of that sourdough bread that we all enjoy,” Balogh said.

Soba noodles, squares of tofu, edamame, corn, slaw, carrots, crispy shallots, and cilantro all sit in a black bowl on a wooden table in front of a blue wall.

For a refreshing meal, the Soba Noodle Salad is a great light dish with tofu, cabbage, edamame, carrots, roasted corn, scallions, and cilantro topped with crispy shallots and sesame ginger dressing. It can be paired with a refreshing Honey Lemon-Ade with yuzu purée and popping passion fruit and strawberry boba.

Lemonade is in a tall clear glass topped with ice and pink and orange popping boba on a wooden table in front of a blue wall.

In the series, Baymax enjoys a cold beverage with caramel syrup, and guests will be able to experience this movie moment with their own Caramel Cream Cold Brew—perhaps the perfect pick-me-up.

Aunt Cass has thought of everything, even dessert. Guests can enjoy a fluffy Japanese-style cheesecake with a cherry compote. Made with a meringue, it is much less dense than a typical New York cheesecake, Balogh said.

Lucky Fortune Cookery
Next door to Aunt Cass Café is Lucky Fortune Cookery, which has a multicultural menu of Vietnamese, Korean, Chinese, and Japanese flavors, Balogh said. A Yaki Udon will be available, which is similar to Yakitori but served with thick udon noodles.

Sitting on a black plate is a fried chicken sandwich with a slaw and mayonnaise, a side of chips, and a grilled pepper. The black plate sits on a wooden table.

A Karaage-inspired Crispy Chicken Sandwich with slaw and Togarashi mayonnaise will also be available on a potato bun, along with garlic chips.

Inspired by Cocina Cucamonga Mexican Grill’s braised beef, there will also be a twist on ramen that includes birria beef, mozzarella cheese, a soft-boiled egg, and roasted corn.

Balogh sees a narrative in the mixing of cultures together in the food he and his team have created for San Fransokyo Square. “I think about these cultures kind of coming together, sharing ideas and thoughts and ingredients, maybe techniques,” he said. “And then as they go back to their restaurants, they’re practicing some of those things that they’re learning into their own menus.”

Wash all these flavorful foods down with an unsweetened black iced tea infused with flavor from lychee syrup and lychee coconut jelly.

A large white macaron with a design representative of Baymax’s eyes sits on a black plate on a wooden table.

And, of course, there’s a Baymax-themed dessert! A white macaron filled with a buttercream and a hazelnut filling is topped with an outline of Baymax’s eyes.

Cocina Cucamonga Mexican Grill
While Lucky Fortune Cookery borrows influences from Cocina Cucamonga, Cocina Cucamonga borrows from Lucky Fortune Cookery by adding a Japanese flair to its Mexican street corn. The corn will be topped with Togarashi mayonnaise, queso fresco, furikake, and bonito flakes, which will be served with wheat chicharrons.

“What we’ve recognized is [the restaurants] want to welcome their new neighbors into the neighborhood,” Balogh said. “On the taste side of things, your taste buds are wondering, ‘Where am I right now?’ And I think that’s really exciting.”

Rita’s Turbine Blenders
Jelly rings will be put on top of non-alcoholic drinks at Rita’s Turbine Blenders as a nod to GoGo Tomago.

Food for Children
As Chef Balogh has observed during his several years at Disney, children enjoy eating what the adults around them are eating. Some restaurants do have a kids menu but the items in the kids menu will typically be smaller portions.
