5 Smackerels of Secrets from the Christopher Robin Press Conference

By Jocelyn Buhlman

It’s time to return to the Hundred Acre Woods, but before we grab our hunny pots and head to theaters on August 3, we found out more about Disney’s Christopher Robin at a press conference in Los Angeles, California. Ewan McGregor (Christopher Robin), Hayley Atwell (Evelyn Robin), Jim Cummings (voice of Winnie the Pooh and Tigger), and Marc Forster (director) joined us to share more about this charming, nostalgia-inducing film that follows the adventures of an adult Christopher Robin after he is reunited with his favorite silly old bear…

Christopher Robin

The cast and crew explain how Pooh and friends “acted” on set…
The ever-so-huggable designs of Pooh and friends may look just look like the plushes of your childhood days, but they were created after filming through movie magic that brings them to life on screen. So how were Ewan McGregor and Hayley Atwell supposed to act without the characters physically on set?

Director Marc Forster had a plan: “I brought these kids from drama school and cast them according to character,” he explains. The students acted in place of the plushes for certain takes, so McGregor and Atwell could act out their scenes with more than their imaginations.

Of course, you can’t film a movie about someone as adorable as Winnie the Pooh without having the real bear there—so, sometimes, the cast would act with the actual plushes!

“There’d be a complete Pooh—just like you see him in the movie,” McGregor explains, “and then David, who was the actor, would just move him a little bit and I would play the scene.”

Christopher Robin

Ewan McGregor has a Winnie the Pooh of his own…
If you act with irresistible plushies all day, one or two might end up coming home with you. McGregor explains, “The teddy bears [used on set] were so beautifully made. I’ve got my Winnie the Pooh at home because I spent four months looking into his little eyes. I really liked having him around.”

Christopher Robin

Hayley Atwell got the role on the back of a jet ski!
Atwell had been eager to take her role from the beginning, as a lifelong Winnie the Pooh fan. However, her first meeting about the film happened at a very unusual locale. She explains, “My first meeting with Marc was on the back of a jet ski. I was on holiday, and I got a call from my agent going, ‘Marc Forster would like to call you and discuss this film.’

Of course, she wanted to call him up right away, but she ran into a bit of a problem. She told her agent, “I’m in a bit of a dead spot in terms of Wi-Fi on this Greek island.”

But she found a solution—and it involved her strapping on a life vest and heading out to sea: “The captain of the boat said, ‘You see that rock? Go 10 minutes past that rock and, basically, when you’ve lost all visuals of civilization, you might get enough of a signal to speak to him.’”

Luckily for Atwell, the trick worked, and, thanks to her jet ski, she became part of the legacy she adored as a little girl.

Director Marc Forster only asked Richard Sherman to write one song…
For more than 50 years, Disney Legends Richard M. and Robert B. Sherman wrote music for Disney movies, penning many of the classics you know and love—including the songs from the original Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh. While Robert Sherman passed in 2012, his brother Richard Sherman carries on their musical legacy with The Walt Disney Company and represented the songwriting duo at a special soundstage dedication ceremony in the brothers’ honor. Forster hoped he could convince Richard Sherman to return to the world of Winnie the Pooh to lend his talents to the new film. “I only wanted one song,” Forster explains, “because I didn’t know if he still wanted to write songs for movies.”  To Forster’s delight, Sherman agreed to write something—or maybe a couple of somethings: “Suddenly, there were three songs!”

There was more magic to come for Forster. What would you do if a Disney Legend called your phone? Forster recalls, “My phone rang and Richard said, ‘Marc, I wrote these songs for you.’”

And then, to the director’s surprise, Sherman started performing the songs on speaker phone. “On his piano at home, he started playing them live for me!” Forster recalls with delight.

Christopher Robin

Jim Cummings knows why Pooh and friends are irresistible…
Cummings, the prolific voice actor behind a menagerie of animated Disney characters, has been voicing Pooh and Tigger since the 1980s. He’s had plenty of time to think, think, think about these classic characters, and he knows just why we keep wanting to return to the enchanted neighborhood of Christopher Robin’s childhood days.

“These guys,” Cummings explained, referring to Pooh and friends, “I think that they’re evergreen. They’re not tied to a fad, they’re not tied to a skateboard, or posters, or baseball cards, or pogs—or whatever. They come from literature—they’re literally bedtime stories, and those will always be around.”

It’s true—what could be more timeless than sharing classic stories with your children? The stories of Christopher Robin and his friends have brightened children’s imaginations for decades, and with the debut of Christopher Robin, the stories will continue to put smiles on the faces of the young and young-at-heart for years to come.

Disney and THE BLONDS to Bring Villains to New York Fashion Week

Full disclosure: We’re obsessed with Disney Villains and their deliciously wicked ways. Plus, they’re known to sport some of the most iconic fashion looks in the entire Disney canon! And now, they’ll be taking center stage at September’s New York Fashion Week, when the luxury brand THE BLONDS presents “Disney Villains”—a runway show featuring their Spring ’19 collection.

Co-founded by designer Phillipe Blond and creative director David Blond, THE BLONDS are known for creating over-the-top pieces with glamorous, rebellious flare. Their Spring ’19 line will feature looks inspired by villains such as Cruella de Vil from 101 Dalmatians; Maleficent from Sleeping Beauty; the Evil Queen from Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs; the Queen of Hearts from Alice in Wonderland; Dr. Facilier from The Princess and the Frog; and Ursula and her dark eel minions Flotsam and Jetsam from The Little Mermaid.

As part of the creative process, Phillipe and David toured the legendary Disney Animation Research Library—where they learned about each Villain’s mythology and viewed original artwork and sculpts. As David recently explained, “What drew us to working with Disney Villains are the complex attributes of the characters themselves… we loved the idea of taking these characteristics and translating them in a glamorous way, making them the heroes of our story.”

Lucky for us Villains fans, THE BLONDS’ fashion show will be livestreamed on Disney.com, theblondsny.com, and NYFW.com on Friday, September 7. We can’t wait to see the looks in action!

Go Behind the Incredi-Scenes with New Paint the Night Float

Pixar Fest at the Disneyland Resort is still going strong, now through September 3—and as part of the fun, the sparkling Paint the Night parade not only moved locations (from Disneyland to Disney California Adventure park), but also added a brand-new float themed after The Incredibles!

Our super friends over at the Disney Parks Blog recently debuted a video chronicling the behind-the-scenes magic that went into creating such an innovative float. (Case in point: There are a whopping 200 programmable lights embedded into the float’s buildings, Frozone’s “ice” trail, and the Underminer’s drill.) Check out the clip, above—and make sure to see the float in action during the Paint the Night parade, only at the Disneyland Resort.

Rendez-Vous Gourmand is Back at Disneyland Paris

Disney Parks and Resorts are known for celebrating delicious food and drink—from the fan-favorite Food & Wine Festivals now held yearly at both Epcot and Disney California Adventure park, to the incredible restaurants located at Disney parks, hotels, and shopping districts around the world.

Considering France is known for exceptional cuisine, it stands to reason that Disneyland Paris would “cook up” something equally as memorable: Last year, the resort debuted Rendez-Vous Gourmand—and the festival just returned to offer up tasty treats once more!

From now through September 30, guests can stroll down Rue de Paris to Place de Rémy in Walt Disney Studios Park for a chance to try mouthwatering options from six “chalets,” representing French regions from Alsace to Provence. And in addition to rich French flavor, this year’s “feast”-ivities will also celebrate the West Indies, Italy, Spain, and Belgium. Vegan options are available, as are fantastic pairings of champagne, wine, beer, and cider.

Visting Disneyland Paris this summer? Don’t miss the foodie fun!

Every Magical Moment from the Dedication of the Sherman Brothers Stage and Christopher Robin World Premiere

By Jocelyn Buhlman

On Monday, July 30, we bounced over to The Walt Disney Studios for a magical evening in celebration of Disney’s new film Christopher Robin. We had the honor of attending a special ceremony honoring Disney Legends Richard M. and Robert B. Sherman with a soundstage dedication, before we stepped out onto the red carpet for more fun with voice acting legend Jim Cummings and our very own D23 Members.

A Practically Perfect Ceremony
You might know the Sherman brothers from, well—have you ever had a Disney song stuck in your head? There’s a good chance they wrote it. From “it’s a small world” and “The Tiki, Tiki, Tiki Room” to the classic soundtracks to The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh, Mary Poppins, and more, this legendary duo’s music has been part of The Walt Disney Company for more than 50 years. It’s only natural that Disney would dedicate Soundstage A in their honor—in fact, many of their most famous songs were recorded on this very soundstage!

The ceremony, which we streamed live on Facebook, opened with the Side Street Strutters performing a delightful medley of the brothers’ best tunes, before a swingin’ number from the Disneyland Band and the arrival of Mickey and Minnie kicked off the special event.

Christopher Robin Premiere

The Walt Disney Studios Chairman Alan Horn presided over the ceremony and Richard Sherman also spoke on behalf of his brother, Robert, who passed away in 2012, and himself. In addition to Richard’s wife, daughter, and grandchildren, three of Robert’s children and four of his grandchildren attended the ceremony in his honor. You can watch our live stream of the ceremony below:

Before the brand-new marquee was revealed to the crowd, Richard Sherman shared some heartfelt words: “It’s been a joy, it’s been an honor, and it’s been a privilege to work here at The Walt Disney Studios, working for Walt Disney and for all the brilliant, brilliant people with whom Bob and I associated through the years.”

Rolling Out the Red Carpet
The wonderful thing about red carpets, is that red carpets are wonderful things—and we would know, because after the dedication ceremony, we had the delight of attending the Christopher Robin world premiere with a smackerel of important guests, including D23 Gold Members and the voice of Winnie the Pooh (and Tigger, too!), Jim Cummings.

Christopher Robin Premiere

Cummings, a legendary voice actor who has lent his vocal talents to iconic characters you definitely know from your childhood—from classics like Pete and Kaa to television favorites like Darkwing Duck and Don Karnage—joined us on the red carpet for a special social media takeover that was sweeter than hunny.

Christopher Robin Premiere

Our members, dressed in their Hundred Acre Wood best, had a special spot on the red carpet to watch the excitement of the premiere. Cummings made sure to stop by and say hi to our members and make their experience even more star-studded!

We had a chance to talk with Cummings before he headed into the screening, and he had a very special message for D23 Members:

Of course, Cummings wasn’t the only star on the red carpet (although he voices enough characters to fill a whole premiere!). Hayley Atwell, Ewan McGregor, Bronte Carmichael, and the film’s director, Marc Forster, were all on site for the premiere.

We also stopped to chat with Brad Garrett, who lends his voice to our favorite downcast donkey, Eeyore. He had this message for D23 Members:

We had to say “TTFN (ta-ta for now!)” to Cummings so he could head in to watch Christopher Robin with his family, but first, he posed with the cast of the film for a wonderful group photo!

Christopher Robin Premiere

We couldn’t have asked for a sweeter premiere, and we were so happy that we could share the experience with our D23 Members on the red carpet! If you want to join in the Hundred Acre Woods fun, make sure to bounce into theaters, starting August 3, to watch Winnie the Pooh, Tigger, Piglet, Eeyore, and more of your favorite childhood pals on screen in Christopher Robin!
