Summer Magic: Saving a Cinematic Relic on the Disney Backlot

By Rick Lorentz, Walt Disney Archives

Acquiring objects for the multiple collections of the Walt Disney Archives may take one of many routes. Typically, television and film productions will offer props and costumes to the Archives once a production has wrapped. If an attraction undergoes refurbishment or permanently closes, Disney Parks and Resorts will receive an Archives “Wish List” for select and iconic pieces that we would like to add to our collection.

However, when founder of the Walt Disney Archives, Dave Smith, first began acquiring objects for the cause, he sometimes had to resort to more “direct” options. Case in point: a baluster from the 1963 film Summer Magic. According to Dave, the house used for exterior shots in the film was part of the studio back lot. One day, while walking across the lot, Dave passed by the house as it was being torn down to make way for new construction. Recognizing both the film location and the history that was being destroyed, Dave ran over to the house and grabbed one of the only things he could—an 18-inch piece of carved wood directly from the front porch! The baluster now resides comfortably in an archival box in a secure warehouse. Fortunately, the rest of the Summer Magic collection (two dresses and several original pieces of costume development art) were acquired in a more conventional manner!

Your First Look at Disney Channel’s Upside-Down Magic Is Spellbinding

By Zach Johnson

Which kind of witch are you?

The spellbinding trailer for the highly anticipated Disney Channel Original Movie Upside-Down Magic was released today. Premiering Friday, July 31, at 8 p.m. ET/PT, the film follows 13-year-old Nory Boxwood Horace (newcomer Izabela Rose) and her best friend, Reina Carvajal (Siena Agudong), as they enroll in the Sage Academy for Magical Studies.

While Reina’s expert ability to harness the power of fire lands her at the top of the class of Flares, Nory’s unreliable magic and proclivity for turning into herself into a “Dritten”—a half-kitten, half-dragon—lands her in a class for those with upside-down magic, or UDM, led by the wisecracking groundskeeper and “professor” Budd Skriff (Kyle Howard). Unfortunately, the stern Headmaster Knightslinger (Vicki Lewis) believes the UDM’s unconventional powers make them vulnerable to dangerous and evil “shadow magic,” so Nory and her fellow classmates must prove that upside-down magic beats right-side up.

Based on the New York Times bestselling children’s book of the same name, Upside-Down Magic also stars Max Torina, Elie Samouhi, and Alison Fernandez. The movie will also be available to watch on DisneyNOW beginning Saturday, August 1. Director Joe Nussbaum serves as an executive producer alongside Suzanne Farwell and Susan Cartsonis. Bill Boes is the production designer, Adam Santelli is the director of photography, and Barbara Somerville is the costume designer. Nick Pustay and Josh Cagan wrote the teleplay, based on the Scholastic book from novelists Sarah Mlynowski, Lauren Myracle, and Emily Jenkins.

onward

1. Onward (2019)
Ian Lightfoot (voice of Tom Holland) often wonders what his late father was like… and in this magical feature from Pixar Animation Studios (inspired by director Dan Scanlon’s own life), Ian is given the rare opportunity to find out firsthand. On Ian’s 16th birthday, he receives a magical gift that gives him and his big brother, Barley (voice of Chris Pratt), the chance to spend one more day with their dad. The only problem is… the spell goes awry, giving the brothers less than 24 hours to finish it before their window of opportunity closes.

the little mermaid

2. The Little Mermaid (1989)
Sixteen-year-old Princess Ariel (voice of Disney Legend Jodi Benson) is fascinated with humans, much to the chagrin of her father, King Triton (voice of Kenneth Mars). After rescuing Prince Eric (voice of Christopher Daniel Barnes), Ariel is even more determined to become part of their world. So, after she makes a deal with the sea witch Ursula (voice of Pat Carroll) without so much as reading the fine print, King Triton strikes a new deal to take his daughter’s place as Ursula’s servant by giving up his all-powerful trident. It’s the ultimate story of love, sacrifice, and understanding… all set against a brilliant musical score.

the incredibles

3. The Incredibles (2004)
Known to the world as Mr. Incredible, Bob Parr (voice of Craig T. Nelson) is known by another name at home: Dad. After adopting a civilian identity and retreating into the suburbs with his wife, Helen/Elastigirl (voice of Holly Hunter), and their three kids, Bob is itching to get back into action. He finally gets his chance when a curious communication summons him to a remote island for a top-secret assignment. But to save the world from being destruction, he needs a team of Supers… and who better to join Bob than his family?

the lion king

4. The Lion King (1994)
Heir to the throne, Simba (voice of Jonathan Taylor Thomas) is a young lion cub who just can’t wait to be king. But his time to reign comes sooner than expected when his father, Mufasa (voice of Disney Legend James Earl Jones), is murdered by Scar (voice of Jeremy Irons). Terrified and tricked, Simba abdicates his role as ruler of Pride Rock and runs away. But with the help of a meerkat and a warthog, Simba finds his destiny in the “Circle of Life.”

avengers endgame

5. Marvel Studios’ Avengers: Endgame (2019)
Following the events of Marvel Studios’ Avengers: Infinity War, the surviving heroes vow to undo the devastating act perpetrated by Thanos (James Brolin) that wiped out half the world’s population. Leave it to Tony Stark/Iron Man (Disney Legend Robert Downey Jr.) to unlock the key to time travel, allowing the team to rewrite the future. As part of their plan, Tony and Steve Rogers/Captain America (Chris Evans) travel to 1970 to obtain the Space Stone and some Pym Particles—and in a chance encounter, Tony has a cathartic moment with his late father, Howard Stark (John Slattery). It’s the perfect goodbye—especially since Tony never thought he’d get the chance to say it.

beauty and the beast

6. Beauty and the Beast (1991)
When the inventor Maurice (voice of Rex Everhart) stumbles upon an enchanted castle seeking shelter, he’s imprisoned by the mysterious Beast (voice of Robby Benson). Out of love, his daughter Belle (voice of Disney Legend Paige O’Hara) trades her life for his. He returns to their provincial town and asks for help in rescuing her, but no one takes him seriously. Gaston (voice of Richard White) calls Maurice “crazy” and locks him up after discovering that Belle has—against all odds—fallen in love with Beast. With help from Belle’s new friends, Maurice is able to escape and head back to the castle to defend his daughter—not from the Beast, but from the townspeople who have stormed its very gates.

finding nemo

7. Finding Nemo (2003)
All Marlin (voice of Albert Brooks) wants is to keep his son Nemo (voice of Alexander Gould) safe. It’s easier said than done, of course, especially given Nemo’s need to prove himself. When Nemo is unexpectedly captured from Australia’s Great Barrier Reef and placed in a dentist’s office aquarium, it’s up to his worrisome father and the friendly but forgettable Dory (voice of Ellen DeGeneres) to make the epic journey to bring him home.

a goofy movie

8. A Goofy Movie (1995)
Goofy (voice of Disney Legend Bill Farmer) wants to spend the summer with his teenage son Max (voice of Jason Marsden) on a cross-country road trip. Despite Max’s objections, the father-son duo set off en route to the ol’ fishing hole—and along the way, they find a world of misadventure. Without telling his dad, Max reroutes their map to Los Angeles so he can attend the Powerline concert. After Goofy realizes what his son has done, a major fight ensues—but it ends with a heart-to-heart that has them seeing “I2I” at the big show.

tron legacy

9. TRON: Legacy (2010)
Set seven years after the events of TRON (1982), Kevin Flynn (Jeff Bridges), the world’s greatest video game creator, transmits a secret signal from a digital realm. His son, Sam Flynn (Garrett Hedlund), discovers the clue and sets off on a journey to save his long-lost father. With the help of the fearless warrior Quorra (Olivia Wilde), the reunited father and son team venture through a cyber universe in the hopes of being reunited in the real world.

With PRIDE: The Props of Love, Simon

By Jennifer Vanoni, Walt Disney Archives

Love, Simon is a charming adaptation, notable as the first film by a major Hollywood studio to focus on a gay teenage romance. The film features a diverse cast and fun, everyday film props.

Nerdy side-note: Alexandra Shipp plays Abby, one of Simon’s best friends in the film and also stars as Storm in more than one X-Men film.

…But now back to props, some films feature state-of-the-art technological creations or huge VFX sequences, but stories like Love, Simon that are about the everyday lives of teens and families tend to bring in more “ordinary” props. Make no mistakes, the props in this film are just as important as anything you’d find in the latest blockbuster.

Enjoy a few on-set archival images that feature props from Love, Simon. Take note of Simon’s iconic denim jacket—it was borrowed from the Walt Disney Archives for production of the new spin-off series, Love, Victor, now streaming on Hulu.

More Wonderful Wisdom from Disney Dads

By Courtney Potter

Comfort, understanding, unconditional love… As we’ve detailed before, fathers from around the worlds of Disney are often known for these traits—and so much more. Just in time for Father’s Day, we’re looking to a few other favorite Disney Dads for some wonderful words of wisdom. There’s a little something in here for all of us—from those trying to find their place in the world to those striving to attain a near-impossible dream, and everyone in between.

Looking for something to do this weekend with dear ol’ dad? You’re in luck: All the films mentioned are available on Disney+!

the lion king

“Look at the stars. The great kings of the past look down on us from those stars… So whenever you feel alone, just remember that those kings will always be there to guide you. And so will I.”—Mufasa in The Lion King (1994)
As far as Disney Dads go, Mufasa just may be the king of them all. Brave and smart, strong and kind, Mufasa tries to instill all of his life’s lessons into young Simba… and even after he’s gone, his words of wisdom ring loud and true over the Pride Lands, thanks to his son.

ratatouille

“We’re not cooks, but we are family. You tell us what to do, and we’ll get it done.”—Django  in Ratatouille (2007)
Some dads aren’t able to articulate their feelings as well as others, but that doesn’t mean they don’t care… far from it. Case in point: Remy’s dad, Django, in Ratatouille. Gruff and rough around the edges, Django (and the rest of their family) eventually recognizes his son’s gift for fine cuisine, and comes to Remy’s rescue just when he needs his help the most.

the incredibles

You are my greatest adventure… and I almost missed it.”—Bob Parr/Mr. Incredible in The Incredibles (2004)
Occasionally, it takes saving the world (literally) to truly see what’s most important. That’s what happened to father and super hero Bob Parr, aka Mr. Incredible, in The Incredibles. Faced with vanquishing the villainous Syndrome, Bob realizes his family—wife Helen (Elastigirl), daughter Violet, and sons Dash and Jack-Jack—should always come first, and rightly tells them so.

moana

“You are the future of our people, Moana. They are not out there. They are right here. It’s time to be who they need you to be.”—Chief Tui in Moana (2016)
Chief Tui utters these words of wisdom to his daughter early on in Moana—not yet realizing how true they’d be. Moana may have “disobeyed” her father’s orders, but she went on to save her people, bravely facing all manner of peril in the process. She knew who she needed to be—and ultimately, her dad came around to that undeniable fact.

tarzan

“Go on… ”—Professor Porter in Tarzan (1999)
Short, sweet, and to the point: Professor Porter could see that his daughter Jane had fallen for the mysterious Tarzan, and realized it would be wrong to stand in her way. Just as they were about to leave that special island off the Congolese coast, the good professor uttered those two words to Jane, changing her life—and his, in fact—forever.
