Hades Is Up to No Good in the Descendants: The Royal Wedding Trailer

By Zach Johnson

Bibbidi, Bobbidi… Boom!

Disney Channel’s Descendants: The Royal Wedding invites viewers to Auradon’s biggest social soiree: Mal and King Ben’s wedding! Happily-ever-after continues for the power couple as they prepare to say “I do” at a magical celebration with friends and family. But Mal’s father, Hades, threatens to ruin the big day: “You didn’t think this was over, did you?”

Enjoy a first look at the special, courtesy of our friends at Disney Channel:

The animated special will feature a brand-new song, and the original Descendants cast—Dove Cameron (Mal), Sofia Carson (Evie), Booboo Stewart (Jay), Mitchell Hope (King Ben), Sarah Jeffery (Audrey), Melanie Paxson (Fairy Godmother), China Anne McClain (Uma), Jedidiah Goodacre (Chad), Anna Cathcart (Dizzy), Dan Payne (Beast), Bobby Moynihan (Dude the Dog), and Cheyenne Jackson (Hades)—will be reprising their roles. The absence of the character Carlos, played by the late Cameron Boyce, will be acknowledged in the storyline, and Boyce’s memory will be honored during the telecast.

Descendants: The Royal Wedding, written by Sara Parriott & Josann McGibbon and Ricky Roxburgh, is based on the Descendants movies by Parriott & McGibbon. The animated special is directed by Salvador Simó and is produced by Final Frontier Entertainment.

Descendants: The Royal Wedding will premiere Friday, August 13, on Disney Channel, immediately after the 8 p.m. telecast of the all-new Disney Channel Original Movie SPIN.

Magic and Music in Walt Disney Animation Studios’ Encanto—Plus More in News Briefs

By Courtney Potter

First Look at Walt Disney Animation Studios’ Encanto

Here’s something very cool to kick off your weekend: a first look at the latest from our pals at Walt Disney Animation Studios! They’ve just released a teaser trailer for Encanto… it’s the tale of an extraordinary family, the Madrigals, who live hidden in the mountains of Colombia in a magical house, in a vibrant town, in a wondrous, charmed place called an Encanto.

This all-new animated feature follows Mirabel (voice of Stephanie Beatriz), an ordinary 15-year-old girl who’s struggling to find her place in her family. “Mirabel is a really funny, loving character who also deeply yearns for something more,” Beatriz recently said. “She’s also not afraid to stand up for what she knows is right—something I love and relate to very much. I’m Colombian on my father’s side, and playing this role fills me with immense pride.” An avowed “Disney kid,” she added, “I’d burn through my VHS tapes and adored every single magical story that the world of Disney introduced me to. I learned in those stories that anything is possible, especially if you believe in magic and the goodness rooted deep inside us all.”

In the film, the magic of the Encanto has blessed every child in the family with a unique gift, from super strength to the power to heal—every child except one, that is: Mirabel. But when she discovers that the magic surrounding the Encanto is in danger, Mirabel decides that she, the only ordinary Madrigal, might just be her exceptional family’s last hope.

Directed by Byron Howard and Jared Bush; co-directed by Charise Castro Smith; and produced by Clark Spencer and Yvett Merino, with all-new songs by Tony® winner and Oscar® nominee Lin-Manuel Miranda, Encanto is slated to enchant its way into theaters on November 24!

5 Fantastic Things to Watch This Weekend

Here we are, firmly planted within the month of July… and after some weekend fun in the sun, we think there’s nothing better than heading inside for a spell and enjoying some quality content from around the worlds of Disney. So what can you expect? A new episode of High School Musical: The Musical: The Series (featuring the first appearance by Asher Angel); more fun from National Geographic’s SHARKFEST; ABC’s broadcast of The 2021 ESPYS Presented by Capital One; and lots more.

Just Announced: “Avengers: Quantum Encounter” Coming to Disney Wish

Readers of D23 will remember our recent look into all the brand-new merriment available to Disney Cruise Line guests when the Disney Wish sets sail in Summer 2022. Well, just this week, we’ve been privy to further details of what to expect—specifically regarding a very cool new Marvel dining adventure that guests will find on board…

“Avengers: Quantum Encounter”—first announced via a sneak peek introduced by Kevin Feige, President, Marvel Studios and Chief Creative Officer, Marvel (seen above)—is Disney Cruise Line’s most ambitious dining experience ever. This exclusive Avengers adventure will assemble some of Earth’s Mightiest, and tiniest, Super Heroes in a larger-than-life showcase of revolutionary quantum technology and world-class cuisine. It’s more than a meal and more than a show… It’s something that’s never been done before in a restaurant on land or at sea!

The experience will follow Ant-Man and The Wasp as they embark on their first public speaking engagement on behalf of the Avengers. They’re hosting a special presentation of the most powerful Super Hero tech, giving the audience an up-close look at holographic models, field reports, and iconic scenes from the Marvel Cinematic Universe displayed on the screens surrounding the room. The highlight is a hands-on demonstration of the latest and greatest Pym Tech, the Quantum Core, which uses cutting-edge (and highly unstable) technology to shrink and grow targets at the push of a button; a few “misfires” result in hilarious Ant-Man-style hijinks, but the real trouble begins when an unexpected villain shows up with a fearsome army in tow! Ant-Man and The Wasp will need all the help they can get to save the day—calling on Captain America, Captain Marvel, and even the brave diners of the Disney Wish for back-up.

Menus are still in development, so keep your eyes peeled for further details.

Disney+ Reveals Japanese Anime Studios Bringing Star Wars: Visions to Life

Mere days ago, at Anime Expo Lite, Disney+ announced the names of the seven Japanese anime studios bringing their unique talent and perspective to Star Wars: Visions—a collection of animated shorts from Lucasfilm that will stream exclusively on Disney+—and offered fans an exciting sneak peek; check it out, above.

The anime studios revealed are Kamikaze Douga, Geno Studio (Twin Engine), Studio Colorido (Twin Engine), Trigger, Kinema Citrus, Science Saru, and Production IG. Each studio will use their signature animation and storytelling styles to realize their own visions of the galaxy far, far away.

As a first formal foray into anime, each Star Wars: Visions short bears a unique Japanese sensibility—which, in many ways, aligns with the tone and spirit of Star Wars storytelling. From the (lightspeed) jump, stories told in the Star Wars galaxy have counted Japanese mythology and the films of legendary director Akira Kurosawa among their many influences, and these new visions will further explore that cultural heritage through the one-of-a-kind animation style and perspective of each anime studio.

Look for all episodes of Star Wars: Visions premiering on Disney+ this September.

Disney on Broadway’s Live at The New Am: A Benefit Concert for The Actors Fund

The good folks over at Disney on Broadway just announced a sure-to-be-incredible benefit concert, coming up in just a few weeks’ time. We’ve got all the news that’s fit to print about Live at The New Am: A Benefit Concert for The Actors Fund—featuring Disney on Broadway faves Ashley Brown (Mary Poppins), Michael James Scott (Aladdin), Kissy Simmons (The Lion King), and Josh Strickland (Tarzan)—right here at D23.com.

Disney and Pixar’s Coco Joins Mickey’s PhilharMagic on July 17

Fans of all things jubilant, listen up: Mickey’s PhilharMagic will soon have a tuneful new addition! Beginning on July 17, a brand-new animated scene—anchored by the song “Un Poco Loco” from Disney and Pixar’s 2017 hit Coco—will debut inside the attraction at Disney California Adventure Park and Disneyland Paris, before being added to Magic Kingdom Park later this year as part of the Walt Disney World Resort 50th anniversary celebration.

The Academy Award®-winning feature’s fun, upbeat music and characters combined with the humor of Donald Duck marks the first time Disney and Pixar animators have worked on a creative venture where characters from both animation studios will be seen together onscreen. Pretty cool, right? In addition, one of the film’s original composers, Germaine Franco, has produced a brand-new Coco score unique to Mickey’s PhilharMagic.

Should you find yourself at one of the aforementioned Disney Parks soon, do yourself a favor and check it out!

Everything to Know Before You Watch Marvel Studios’ Black Widow

By Zach Johnson

Natasha Romanoff’s past is one tangled web.

Despite her checkered past, she became one of S.H.I.E.L.D.’s most formidable agents before joining the Avengers. Known as the Black Widow, Natasha strives to make up for prior misdeeds by helping the world—even if that means getting her hands dirty in the process.

Created in 1964, the master spy was brought to life in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) by Scarlett Johansson in 2010’s Iron Man 2—although she used an alias, Natalie Rushman, to keep an eye on Tony Stark aka Iron Man (Disney Legend Robert Downey Jr.) while pretending to work in the legal department at Stark Industries under Pepper Potts (Gwyneth Paltrow). Flirty and mysterious, she intrigued Tony from the moment he laid eyes on her. Tony did some quick research and discovered that Natalie was a “very, very impressive individual” who was fluent in several languages and also modeled in Tokyo. In other words, he said, “She’s got everything that I need.” Pepper urged Tony to behave professionally around Natalie, who continued to charm and disarm him while undercover.

While secretly suffering from palladium poisoning, Tony threw himself a wild birthday bash that ended in catastrophe. Defeated and hungover, he met with S.H.I.E.L.D. director Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson)—and it was there, inside Randy’s Donuts, that Natasha revealed her true identity. “I’m a S.H.I.E.L.D. shadow,” she told a stunned Tony. “Once we knew you were ill, I was tasked to you by Director Fury.” She then injected him with lithium dioxide to help take the edge off. “It’s not a cure,” Natasha explained. “It just abates the symptoms.”

black widow

When Tony next saw Natasha, she was back to work as Natalie—with Pepper and Happy Hogan (Disney Legend Jon Favreau) none the wiser. “Are you blending in here well, Natalie? Here at Stark Enterprises?” Tony asked. “Your name is Natalie, isn’t it?” After Pepper and Happy left them alone, Tony continued to test her. “Boy, you’re good. You are mind-blowingly duplicitous. How do you do it? You just tear things… You’re a triple imposter,” he said. “I’ve never seen anything like you. Is there anything real about you?”

Later, after things went haywire at the Stark Expo, Natasha forced Justin Hammer (Sam Rockwell) to reveal where Ivan Vanko aka Whiplash (Mickey Rourke) was controlling the Hammer Drones that had attacked Tony and forced everyone to flee. She then instructed Happy to drive her to Hammer Industries. “When we arrive, I need you to watch the perimeter,” she instructed him while doing a quick change in the backseat. “I’m gonna enter the facility and take down the target.” Upon their arrival, Happy still hadn’t pieced things together and insisted on going in with her. He went to-to-toe with one security guard while Natasha took down nearly a dozen without breaking a sweat. After rebooting the War Machine suit for James Rhodes (Don Cheadle), her work was done. “Reboot complete,” she told Tony over their secure comms. line. “You got your best friend back.”

black widow

The next time we saw Natasha was in Marvel’s The Avengers in 2012. While being interrogated and tortured by Georgi Luchkov (Jerzy Skolimowski), a Russian arms dealer, S.H.I.E.L.D. agent Phil Coulson (Clark Gregg) called with a new priority mission. “I’m in the middle of an interrogation,” said an in-control Natasha, who had played a damsel in distress to perfection. “This moron is giving me everything.” After learning that Clint Barton aka Hawkeye (Jeremy Renner) had been compromised, Natasha took down her captors with ease and left to find Bruce Banner aka the Hulk (Mark Ruffalo) in Kolkata.

After luring him to the outskirts of the city, she explained that while S.H.I.E.L.D. had kept its distance over the years, it now needed his help in locating the stolen Tesseract—a mysterious power source with the potential energy to wipe out the entire planet. “It emits a gamma signature that’s too weak for us to trace,” Natasha explained to Bruce. “There’s no one that knows gamma radiation like you do. If there was, that’s where I’d be.” Later, after Tony, Steve Rogers aka Captain America (Chris Evans), and Thor (Chris Hemsworth) joined their efforts, Natasha interrogated Loki (Tom Hiddleston), who’d stolen the Tesseract and used it to subjugate Clint. Loki assumed she had feelings for Clint, but Natasha replied, “Love is for children. I owe him a debt.” The truth, she said, “is really not that complicated.”

“Before I worked for S.H.I.E.L.D., I… well, I made a name for myself. I have a very specific skillset. I didn’t care who I used it for—or on. I got on S.H.I.E.L.D.’s radar in a bad way,” Natasha told a caged Loki. “Agent Barton was sent to kill me. He made a different call.”

black widow

By helping Clint, Natasha reasoned, she could wipe out the red in her ledger. Loki saw it  differently. “Can you? Can you wipe out that much red? Dreykov’s daughter? São Paolo? The hospital fire? Barton told me everything. Your ledger is dripping. It’s gushing red. And you think saving a man no more virtuous than yourself will change anything? This is the basest sentimentality. This is a child at prayer. Pathetic! You lie and kill in the service of liars and killers. You pretend to be separate, to have your own code, something that makes up for the horrors,” Loki told her. “But they are part of you—and they will never go away!”

Pretending to cry, Natasha called Loki a “monster.” Thinking he had bested her, Loki commented that they already had a monster within their ranks. “So… Banner,” said Natasha, who had deftly managed to outwit Loki, the God of Mischief. “That’s your play.” As the Avengers debated their next move, Clint arrived to set Loki free, unleashing the Hulk in the process. Natasha managed to escape, thanks to Thor, before taking down Clint. As his memories came flooding back, a shaken Clint asked, “Do you know what it’s like to be unmade?” Natasha shot Clint a look that could kill and answered, “You know that I do.”

Loki resurfaced in New York City, where he used the Tesseract to open a portal for the Chitauri to invade Earth. The Avengers worked together to minimize casualties and stop the destruction. (At one point, as Natasha fired shot after shot, she joked, “This is like Budapest all over again.” Clint replied, “You and I remember Budapest very differently.”) Natasha eventually made her way to the top of Stark Tower. Thanks to a fail-safe that Dr. Erik Selvig (Stellan Skarsgård) had installed earlier, Natasha was able to close the portal.

Though the Avengers went their separate ways, Director Fury had a feeling they’d be back…

black widow

Cut to 2014’s Captain America: The Winter Soldier, where Natasha and Steve continued to operate on behalf of S.H.I.E.L.D. While on a mission to reclaim the hijacked Lemurian Star, Steve realized their directives were different when he caught Natasha saving S.H.I.E.L.D. intel. “It’s a good habit to get into,” she said with a smirk, knowing that she’d just broken Steve’s trust. Steve later shared his concerns with Director Fury, who was attacked shortly thereafter. While in the hospital, Director Fury seemingly died on the operating table. Natasha was in disbelief, and after Steve was ambushed at S.H.I.E.L.D. headquarters, she decided to confide in him. “I know who killed Fury,” she said. “Most of the intelligence community doesn’t believe he exists. The ones that do call him The Winter Soldier. He’s credited with over two dozen assassinations in the last 50 years… Five years ago I was escorting a nuclear engineer out of Iran. Somebody shot out my tires near Odessa. We lost control, went straight over a cliff, I pulled us out. But The Winter Soldier was there. I was covering my engineer, so he shot him straight through me. Soviet slug, no rifling. Bye-bye, bikinis… Going after him is a dead end, I know. I’ve tried. Like you said, he’s a ghost story.”

Natasha and Steve then headed to Camp Lehigh in Wheaton, New Jersey—the same United States Army facility where Steve had once trained for World War II. Along the way, the two Avengers got to know each other on a deeper level. “The truth is a matter of circumstance. It’s not all things to all people, all the time,” Natasha said. “Neither am I.”

At Camp Lehigh, they discovered HYDRA had infiltrated S.H.I.EL.D. 70 years prior. Evading a bomb and HYDRA agents, they escaped and showed up on the doorstep of Sam Wilson aka The Falcon (Anthony Mackie). “Everyone we know is trying to kill us,” Natasha told him. After getting cleaned up, Natasha further opened up to Steve: “When I first joined S.H.I.EL.D., I thought I was going straight, but I guess I just traded the KGB for HYDRA. I thought I knew whose lies I was telling, but I guess I can’t tell the difference anymore.”

black widow

Later, while questioning S.H.I.E.L.D. agent Jasper Sitwell (Maximiliano Hernández), Natasha, Steve, and Sam were attacked by The Winter Soldier (Sebastian Stan). They were soon apprehended, but it wasn’t long before S.H.I.EL.D. agent Maria Hill (Cobie Smulders) freed them and brought them to a hidden base where they learned Director Fury was very much alive—and determined to take down HYDRA once and for all. They hatched a plan in which Natasha used a Photostatic Veil to disguise herself as a member of the World Security Council and take down Alexander Pierce (Robert Redford), one of HYDRA’s top operatives who had infiltrated S.H.I.EL.D. After disarming him, Natasha removed her disguise and quipped, “I’m sorry. Did I step on your moment?” She then dumped all of S.H.I.E.L.D. and HYDRA’s secrets onto the internet. “If you do this, none of your past is going to remain hidden,” Pierce warned. “Are you sure you’re ready for the world to see you as you really are?” Natasha looked him straight in the eye and fired back, “Are you?”

In the aftermath, Natasha testified before the Department of Defense on Capitol Hill. “HYDRA was selling you lies, not intelligence,” she said. Threatened with sanctions, Natasha didn’t back down. “You’re not going to put me in a prison. You’re not going to put any of us in a prison. You know why? Because you need us. Yes, the world is a vulnerable place, and yes, we help make it that way. But we’re also the ones best qualified to defend it. So, if you want to arrest me—arrest me,” Natasha said. “You’ll know where to find me.”

Natasha later met up with Steve and Sam and told them she’d be on her own for a bit. “I blew all my covers,” she explained. “I gotta go figure out a new one.” She then revealed she had called in a few favors from Kiev to get a dossier on The Winter Soldier and his whereabouts. “Be careful, Steve,” she warned. “You might not want to pull on that thread.”

black widow

In 2015’s Avengers: Age of Ultron, Natasha and Bruce were closer than ever. But as she flirted over drinks, Bruce remained clueless about the “fella” who’d done her wrong. “He’s not so bad,” Natasha said. “Well, he has a temper. Deep down, he’s all fluff. Fact is, he’s not like anybody I’ve ever known. All my friends are fighters, and here comes this guy who spends his life avoiding the fight because he knows he’ll win.” It didn’t hurt that he was a “huge dork,” she added. “Chicks dig that.” Before Bruce could wise up and make a move, Tony’s Iron Legion attacked them under the orders of a new threat: Ultron (James Spader).

After Ultron escaped, the Avengers tracked him down on the African coast. There, Wanda Maximoff (Elizabeth Olsen) inflicted a nightmarish vision on each of them—one that forced Natasha to relive the horrors of the Red Room where she was trained to be a spy. As the team recovered, Clint took them to his home, knowing they would be safe there. Clint’s secret family life surprised everyone except Natasha, with whom he shared everything. While there, Natasha broached the idea of running away with Bruce, who argued there is “no future with him” because he’s incapable of having children. What he didn’t know until that moment is that Natasha couldn’t conceive a child, either. “In the Red Room, where I was trained, where I was raised, um… they have a graduation ceremony. They sterilize you,” she said, tears streaming down her face. “It’s efficient. One less thing to worry about. The one thing that might matter more than a mission. Makes everything easier—even killing.”

black widow

Realizing Ultron wanted to “evolve,” the Avengers split into two groups, with Natasha, Clint, and Steve sent to stop him from obtaining the Regeneration Cradle in South Korea. Natasha succeeded, but while entering the Quinjet, she was knocked out and taken captive.

Bruce later comes to her rescue, telling her, “Our fight is over.”

But Natasha never backs down from a fight, and they reunited with the rest of the Avengers in Sokovia, where Ultron had built his doomsday project. Steve wanted to evacuate citizens from the levitating country, and Natasha said that may require staying behind. “There’s worse ways to go,” she said. “Where else am I gonna get a view like this?”

With most of the civilians out of harm’s way, Natasha tried to calm the Hulk down. Just then, Ultron fired shots in the direction, so the Hulk carried Natasha to safety. He then boarded a Quinjet to stop Ultron. Hoping to appeal to Bruce, Natasha reached out to him via their internal comms. “Hey, big guy. You did it. The job’s finished,” she said. “Now I need you to turn this bird around, OK? We can’t track you in stealth mode. So, help me out. I need you…” Before she could finish her sentence, the Hulk turned the monitor off and left.

But the Hulk left Natasha with a new purpose: training new Avengers alongside Steve.

black widow

In 2016’s Captain America: Civil War, Natasha was forced to choose sides after an unfortunate incident in Lagos resulted in multiple casualties. Established by the United Nations and ratified by 117 nations, the Sokovia Accords limited the Avengers’ ability to interfere in international incidents. Tony was in favor of signing the accords, while Steve was not—and Natasha found herself somewhere in the middle. “Maybe Tony’s right. If we have one hand on the wheel, we can still steer,” she told Steve. “If we take it off…” If her position confused anyone (namely Sam), Natasha made her point clear: “I’m just reading the terrain. We have made some very public mistakes. We need to win their trust back.”

Steve was then called away after learning Peggy Carter (Hayey Atwell) had died, and Natasha surprised him by supporting him at her funeral in London. They talked shop for a bit, with Natasha saying, “Just because it’s the path of least resistance doesn’t mean it’s the wrong path. Staying together is more important than how we stay together.” Steve remained unconvinced, and Natasha dropped it. After all, the Sokovia Accords weren’t why she had flown across the pond. In truth, Natasha told Steve, “I didn’t want you to be alone.”

Natasha then traveled to Vienna, where the accords were being ratified. A bomb exploded at the United Nations, killing Wakanda’s King T’Chaka (John Kani). The Winter Soldier was framed for the attack, and Natasha tried to reason with Steve. “I know how much Barnes means to you. I really do. Stay home,” she said. “You’ll only make this worse. For all of us. Please.” Steve was eventually apprehended, along with Sam and Bucky aka The Winter Soldier, and Natasha quipped, “For the record, this is what making things worse looks like.”

The Winter Soldier escaped soon after, as did Steve and Sam. Tony was given 36 hours to bring them in, prompting Natasha to recruit T’Challa aka Black Panther (Chadwick Boseman). Lines were drawn and the team was split into two by the time everyone reunited at Leipzig-Halle Airport. “Steve, you know what’s about to happen,” Natasha said. “Do you really want to punch your way out of this one?” When it became clear that no one would win the fight, Natasha changed sides and decided to help Steve and Bucky escape. With a sigh, she stung T’Challa: “I said I’d help you find him, not catch him. There’s a difference.” Natasha later pleaded with Tony to help Steve and Bucky, arguing, “We played this wrong.”

Black Widow—the first film in Phase Four of the MCU—is set after the events of Captain America: Civil War. Now a fugitive, Natasha is looking to start over. That’s easier said than done, of course, especially when a dangerous conspiracy with ties to her past arises. Reuniting with people from her past (David Harbour, Florence Pugh, and Rachel Weisz), Natasha may finally have the chance to wipe the red out of her ledger—if only she can stop General Dreykov (Ray Winstone) and put a stop to his Red Room operations for good.

The action-packed thriller Black Widow will debut simultaneously in theaters and on Disney+ with Premier Access (for a one-time fee of $29.99) in most Disney+ markets on July 9, 2021. Meet the Monsters

By Jim Frye

Some are hairy. Some have sharp teeth. Some have three eyes. And they’ve all been trained to scare you. Trouble is, these monsters are now on the hunt for laughs. The not-quite-scary characters from Disney and Pixar’s beloved Monsters, Inc. and Monsters University return and new characters are introduced in this all-new series now streaming on Disney+.

Monsters at Work takes place the day after the Monsters, Inc. power plant starts harvesting the laughter of children to fuel the city of Monstropolis. Which is a challenge for new monster Tylor Tuskmon, who lands a job at Monsters, Inc. before discovering that his lifelong goal of scaring is out, and laughter is in. Because he has no experience in harvesting laughs, he gets reassigned to the Monsters, Inc. Facilities Team (MIFT), where he meets a misfit bunch of mechanics.

Here’s a roster of the main Monsters you’ll meet.

monsters at work

Mike / Billy Crystal
Comedian, actor, writer, director, producer, host, and Disney Legend Billy Crystal returns as the frantic yet lovable Mike Wazowski, who has been put in charge of the Monsters, Inc. power plant, along with Sulley, after the two of them discovered that laughter generates more power than screams. Crystal is known to audiences around the world as the star of such feature films as When Harry Met Sally…, City Slickers, and Analyze This; as a cast member of NBC’s Saturday Night Live; and as the acclaimed nine-time host of the Academy Awards®.

monsters at work

Sulley / John Goodman
Fellow Disney Legend John Goodman returns as everyone’s favorite big softie, James P. “Sulley” Sullivan, who—together with best buddy, Mike—now co-manages Monsters, Inc. Goodman is currently on production in the second season of Danny McBride’s HBO comedy series Righteous Gemstones and just wrapped the third season of ABC’s The Conners. Among Goodman’s many accolades are a Golden Globe Award for Best Actor and seven Emmy nominations for his role in Roseanne.

monsters at work

Tylor / Ben Feldman
Tylor Tuskmon is an eager young monster who graduated top of his class at Monsters University and always dreamed of becoming a Scarer, until he lands a job at Monsters, Inc. and discovers that the factory now harvests the laughter of children. Yikes. Feldman recently wrapped the sixth and final season of the critically acclaimed workplace comedy Superstore, in which he portrayed Jonah and was also a producer. He is also known for his role on the Emmy Award-winning Mad Men, where he co-starred as Michael Ginsberg, the aspiring new copywriter at Sterling Cooper Draper Pryce.

The MIFT Crew

monsters at work

Val / Mindy Kaling
Mindy Kaling voices Val, an enthusiastic member of MIFT, and becomes close friends with newcomer Tylor. An Emmy-nominated writer, producer, New York Times best-selling author, director, and actor, Kaling joined the eight-person writing staff at NBC’s The Office at age 24. During her eight seasons at the show, she wrote 26 episodes (more than any other writer) and was nominated for an Emmy. She then created and starred in the The Mindy Project which ran for six seasons. “I first just want to say how excited I am to be part of this cast,” she said about Monsters at Work. “I love the actors that I get to act with.”

monsters at work

Fritz / Henry Winkler
Henry Winkler voices the character of Fritz, the scatterbrained boss of the MIFT gang. “It’s unbelievably great. It is so much fun,” says Winkler about working on the series. And what does he think about Fritz? “I love the way he looks. I love being part of this ensemble.” Winkler became a household name in the 1970s in the iconic role of Arthur Fonzarelli, aka “The Fonz,” in the TV series Happy Days on ABC. During his 10 years on the popular sitcom, he won two Golden Globe Awards, was nominated three times for an Emmy Award, and was also honored with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. He currently co-stars as acting teacher Gene Cousineau on the hit HBO dark comedy Barry, and will be seen later this year in Wes Anderson’s new film, The French Dispatch.

monsters at work

Duncan / Lucas Neff
The multi-eyed and winged monster, Duncan, is an opportunistic plumber and is voiced by actor Lucas Neff, perhaps best known for portraying James “Jimmy” Chance in the Fox sitcom Raising Hope. Prior to that, Neff gained his first television credit with a role in the series finale of A&E’s The Beast starring Patrick Swayze. Neff currently stars in Carol’s Second Act on CBS.

monsters at work

Cutter / Alanna Ubach
And rounding out the colorful (literally) cast of characters of the MIFT group is Cutter, the officious rule follower on the MIFT team. She’s voiced by Alanna Ubach, an actress who is currently shooting the CBS all access Guilty Party, playing Tessa, archrival to Kate Beckinsale’s Beth. She is also about to shoot season 2 of critically acclaimed HBO series Euphoria as Suze Howard. She also starred as Mamá Imelda in Pixar’s Academy Award-winning Coco.

Other characters in Monsters at Work include Ms. Flint, voiced by Bonnie Hunt, who was formerly in charge of training new Scarers at Monsters, Inc., but now manages the department responsible for recruiting and training the funniest monsters to become Jokesters. Other cast members from the original movies include John Ratzenberger returning as Yeti and voicing a new role as Tylor’s dad, Bernard; Jennifer Tilly as Celia Mae; and Bob Peterson as Roze, twin sister to his original Monsters, Inc. character, Roz. Stephen Stanton joins the cast as Smitty and Needleman, the bumbling custodial team at Monsters, Inc.; and Aisha Tyler plays Tylor’s mom, Millie Tuskmon.

The National Geographic Image Collection archives began in 1919 as an illustration library, and contains over 64.5 million still images dating back to the 1860s. The ever-growing Image Collection is carefully preserved, curated and digitized, with new amazing photos from the pages of National Geographic magazine constantly added, making it one of the most significant photo collections in the world. D23 is pleased to partner with the expert team at the Image Collection to offer a glimpse into this vast archive and celebrate the Jungle Cruise!

The real-world Mekong river spans 2,700 miles and snakes through six Asian countries. Originating in the highlands of the Himalayas, the river begins in China and winds its way through vastly different landscapes in Myanmar, Laos, Thailand, Cambodia, and Vietnam. The lower basin of  the Mekong is home to a dazzling variety of plant and animal life, and crucial to the livelihoods of over 60 million people. The region, rapidly changing due to the impacts of humans, is also a crucial habitat to many endangered species, including tigers and Asian elephants.

“For 16 months, New Yorkers have been eager to start going to the theatre again,” said Thomas Schumacher, President & Producer Disney Theatrical Productions. “The Lion King and Aladdin return to Broadway in September, but these four concerts allow us to welcome fans back to Broadway even sooner and give us a chance to raise much-needed funds to support the heroic work being done by the remarkable staff at The Actors Fund. Meet the Characters of Marvel Studios’ Black Widow

By Zach Johnson

Marvel Studios’ Black Widow doesn’t just explore the titular hero’s past—it introduces fans to the people who shaped it. Based on the beloved Marvel comic-book series first published in 1964, the film features Scarlett Johansson reprising her role as Natasha Romanoff/Black Widow. Rounding out the cast are Florence Pugh as Yelena Belova, David Harbour as Alexei aka Red Guardian, Rachel Weisz as Melina, and O-T Fagbenle as Mason.

The film is directed by award-winning filmmaker Cate Shortland and produced by Kevin Feige. Louis D’Esposito, Victoria Alonso, Brad Winderbaum, Nigel Gostelow, and Johansson serve as executive producers, and Brian Chapek and Mitch Bell serve as co-producers. The screenplay is written by Eric Pearson, and the story is by Jac Schaeffer and Ned Benson. Shot on location in Atlanta, Budapest, Morocco, Norway, and the U.K., Black Widow—the first film in Phase Four of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU)—debuts concurrently in theaters and on Disney+ with Premier Access (for $29.99) in most markets on July 9, 2021.

Set between the events of Captain America: Civil War and Avengers: Infinity War, Black Widow shines a new light on Natasha’s life in the shadows. “I think what’s exciting about the film is we’re playing with the audience’s expectations. We’re exploring parts of Natasha that the audience has absolutely no idea about,” says Shortland. “We explore her family, love, and passion, and you get to see all these facets of her that we’ve never seen before.”

Before Black Widow launches worldwide, get to know the characters:

Natasha Romanoff aka Black Widow

After her new family, the Avengers, breaks up, Natasha—now a fugitive for breaking the Sokovia Accords—confronts the dark path she took to becoming a covert agent, as well as events that followed. She reluctantly reunites with people from her past who share a critical part of her history, as well as a desire to stop a lethal force from being released.

“I know a lot about this character because she’s in me. But I haven’t really had the opportunity to access all the parts of her,” says Johansson. “Cate loves the idea of going inside this character. I’ve been able to make a lot of discoveries about her—to find different strengths and different flaws. It’s been pretty therapeutic. I can’t imagine that many actors have the opportunity to do that with a character they’ve played for 10 years.”

“When you see Natasha in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, she’s often this kind of impenetrable force,” the Tony® Award winner continues. “She’s reckless and out of control but still has this amazing intellect. What are her secrets? Her vulnerabilities? I am excited to share her fragility and her strength. She is in a male world, and she projects a certain way of being in that world. What we wanted to do is find out who is the real Black Widow.”

Yelena Belova

A product of the Red Room’s unforgiving training program, Yelena is assertive and unapologetic. But when she finds herself caught in more than one widow’s web, Yelena’s only chance at survival may require teaming up with the one person she blames for a lifetime of suffering: Natasha. “Yelena is hurt and complicated and acts out,” says Pugh. “One of the coolest things about playing Yelena is just how complex and broken she is for someone who is so sure of what she does. She knows exactly how to function in the areas in which she’s been trained, but she has no clue how to live as a human being. She’s a lethal weapon, but also a bit of a kid. That’s been one of the nicest qualities about her.”

“She doesn’t exactly fit,” Pugh continues. “That’s one of the charming things about her. She reacts instinctually. There’s nothing mysterious about her. She’s quite simply there to get the job done. I think her relationship with Natasha is interesting because they’re constantly butting heads in the way that siblings do. But she’s equally, deeply in pain. She’s had a very confusing childhood and I think she’s constantly searching for a way to patch herself up.”

What Yelena wants more than anything, Pugh says, is for someone to apologize. “She wants to stop feeling like she’s insane. This isn’t normal, and she really wants to let everybody know that she did not have a choice in this,” the actress explains. “The whole of Yelena’s anger, and I suppose her journey, is just trying to get these people that she thought she knew so well to admit that what they did was wrong, and that she was abandoned.”

black widow

Alexei aka Red Guardian

The Red Room’s answer to Captain America, Alexei is a super soldier and spy who lived a lifetime of triumph during the Cold War. Alexei’s years of espionage are in the rearview, but he still considers himself a top hero… even if no one else does. He loves bragging about his glory days to anyone who will listen—which is easy, as his fellow inmates are a captive audience. Deep down—way deep down— he harbors a lot of guilt about his life as a spy, especially when it involves Natasha, whom he knew long before she became Black Widow. “In the beginning, for Alexei, everyone is sort of a reflection of him. That’s the narcissist’s M.O.; he is not interested in anyone else,” says Harbour. “He’s interested in how he’s reflected in their eyes: ‘So, am I cool? Am I strong? Do you like me? I know you do.’”

After all these years, Alexei has a chip on his shoulder that’s the size of The Hulk. “He grew up in the Soviet Union and was chosen for a program similar to the Americans’ Captain America,” says Harbour. “While the Americans were creating their hero, the Russians were developing the Red Guardian. The problem was that he did not become as famous as Captain America, and it’s the great tragedy of his life. He feels very unappreciated.”

black widow

Melina

A highly trained spy who has been cycled through the Red Room’s Widow program four times, Melina is cunning and methodical. After various undercover missions, one of which involved a young Natasha, the Red Room recognized Melina’s intelligence and made her one of its lead scientists. After decades of service, Melina has been able to distance herself from the Red Room and lives on a pig farm in Russia. But when Natasha shows up on her doorstep with Yelena and Alexei in tow, Melina must decide where her true allegiance lies.

After posing as the matriarch of a seemingly normal family that included Alexei and a young Natasha and Yelena, Melina wonders if she became too attached to her comrades. “She was recruited when she was very young. She became a Russian spy and was planted with Alexei and two very young children in America pretending to be a suburban family with a white picket fence. I think Melina was a lot happier in those years,” Weisz says. “I think her heart really hardened after that. She became hard and maybe a little bitter.”

black widow

Taskmaster

The masked assassin carries out deadly missions on behalf of the Red Room. Armed with the ability to mimic an enemy’s every move, the calculating and formidable villain will stop at nothing until his mission is accomplished. Taskmaster has an ability called photographic reflexes, meaning that “if he fights you once, he knows how to emulate your style,” says Winderbaum. “Natasha’s tricks might work in their first altercation, but by round two and three he knows everything, and she has to come up with something else.” Natasha also has a complicated connection to Taskmaster, even if it’s not immediately apparent. Teases Shortland, “In some ways, the Taskmaster is the living embodiment of Natasha’s backstory.”

black widow

Mason

A man of mystery with a can-do attitude, Mason is actually a former soldier turned international smuggler who’s paying a debt to Natasha after she rescued him from a Cambodian prison. Nonetheless, their bond is unmistakable. His ability to deliver on even the most far-fetched requests is admirable… though he’s often caught sleeping on the job.

“When we meet Natasha and Mason, we realize that they have this rapport—even though they have not seen each other for many years,” says Chapek. “They have this chemistry. It was very important to Cate that we see someone in Natasha’s past life who understands her in a way that the Avengers might not have.” New to the MCU, Mason is a “fixer,” Chapek adds. “We needed someone who could be charming, strong, and intelligent, and be on the same playing field as Natasha. O-T Fagbenle is just that; he is an incredible actor.”
