Disney+ Expands the Descendants Universe with Movie Musical The Pocketwatch

Descendants fans, rejoice! Disney+ is bringing an all-new fantasy musical to your homes very soon with The Pocketwatch (working title). In the film, director Jennifer Phang (Advantageous, Half-Life, The Flight Attendant), executive producer Gary Marsh, and writers Dan Frey and Russell Sommer (Magic: The Gathering) are taking viewers back to Auradon and down the rabbit hole to the hostile territory of Wonderland. There we will meet Red—the unruly daughter of the Queen of Hearts, who will reluctantly join forces with Chloe (daughter of Cinderella and Prince Charming) and travel back in time using the White Rabbit’s pocket watch to prevent an impending coup in Auradon.

The world of Descendants has opened the door for endless opportunities to revisit favorite Disney stories in new ways. Jennifer Rogers Doyle (Senior Vice President, Franchise and Integrated Planning, Networks, Disney Media Entertainment and Distribution) is thrilled for fans to meet Red and Chloe in this chapter of the Descendants story, which has “tapped into what parents and kids love—a contemporary story with familiarity.”

The Pocketwatch will feature seven new songs, along with a few Disney classics. “With a captivating script and Jennifer Phang’s directorial vision, we’re setting a new high bar of creativity and imagination, with a movie that ups the ante on story, song, and dance to entertain young viewers, their families, and the global fan base that grew up with the aspirational story of Descendants,” said Ayo Davis, president, Disney Branded Television.

Phang said, “The Pocketwatch presents a delightful canvas with fantastical world building. Musicals sparked my imagination when I was a kid and are a huge part of what drew me to filmmaking. I think that’s because they have a way of conveying these lovely, nuanced ideas through song and expressive movement. I’m also always inspired by the diversity of families that exist all around the world. So I really jumped at the chance to craft a supercharged musical experience and explore some new, invigorating themes inside an expansive Disney universe.”

The Pocketwatch is scheduled to begin production this fall. Catch up on the entire Descendants franchise now on Disney+ and stay tuned to D23.com for more updates on this upcoming film.

Disneyland Paris Lights Up the Eiffel Tower for 30th Anniversary Celebration

By Andie Hagemann

Disneyland Paris and the City of Paris now shine a little brighter: to make the resort’s 30th Anniversary celebration even more special, Mickey Mouse performed a magic trick by lighting up the Eiffel Tower.

For the very first time, the French monument was lit up last month in the iridescent colors of the 30th Anniversary of Disneyland Paris. Thanks to a unique sound and light show, custom designed for the occasion, the iconic monument was illuminated during a dazzling moment created to surprise 30 guests who have a strong bond with the resort. Disneyland Paris employees who have worked at the resort since opening day, Disney VoluntEARS who give their time to philanthropic activities, fans, and loyal guests had the opportunity to watch the show in real-time from an exclusive viewing area.

These 30 guests experienced an unforgettable night, starting their evening off in Disneyland Paris. Guests enjoyed dining at Walt’s – An American Restaurant and viewing “Disney D-Light,” an emotional sequence that takes place before the nighttime spectacular, Disney Illuminations. Then, they boarded a bus that took them to an unknown destination.

Minnie Mouse welcomed these honored guests in front of the Eiffel Tower to bring them to their exclusive viewing area and Mickey became the Master of Ceremonies of an incredible show that lit up the Trocadéro gardens located in front of the monument. This spectacular display combined more than 370 lights and ended with a finale in which Mickey lit up the Eiffel Tower in the magical colors of the 30th Anniversary of Disneyland Paris.

Amazed by this unique moment, Cast Member Christiane said she had seen “an extraordinary show with the Eiffel Tower lit up in the colors of Disneyland Paris’ 30th Anniversary.” Fellow Cast Member and Disney VoluntEAR Binta added, “In 33 years of business, I have never seen such an extraordinary show!” Stéphane, another Cast Member and Disney VoluntEAR, said he was “overwhelmed with emotion when Mickey lit up the Eiffel Tower.”

For 30 years, Disneyland Paris has consistently exceeded its guests’ expectations by creating magical shows year after year. By illuminating the Eiffel Tower in the colors of its 30th Anniversary, Europe’s top tourist destination has gone one step further. This event celebrates 30 years of strong relationships between France, the City of Paris and Disneyland Paris.

Wanda Maximoff’s Top 10 MCU Moments (So Far)

Wanda Maximoff

By Zach Johnson

It’s been eight years since Wanda Maximoff first cast a spell on the Marvel Cinematic Universe [MCU].

Debuting in a mid-credits scene for Marvel Studios’ Captain America: The Winter Soldier, the character—played by Elizabeth Olsen—went on to appear in four feature films and star in one limited series. Olsen reprises her role again in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, now playing exclusively in movie theaters. In celebration of her return, we’ve rounded up and ranked her top 10 MCU moments before her latest adventure! We don’t want to spoil the events of Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, but there are plenty of moments in the film that will definitely crack the top 10. After all, you never know what kind of magic Wanda will conjure up down the line...

Wanda Maximoff destroys a building in Lagos in Captain America: Civil War.

10. Wanda brings down the block. (Captain America: Civil War)
Did Wanda mean to destroy a building in Lagos? Of course not. She merely tried to divert an explosion and wound up causing more destruction in the process. But it also marked the first time fans witnessed how powerful—and how dangerous—she really is.

Wanda Maximoff uses her powers to send Monica Rambeau out of Westview in WandaVision.

9. Wanda refuses to accept reality. (WandaVision)
After Monica Rambeau infiltrated Westview, she befriended Wanda. Letting her guard down, Wanda opened up about her late brother, Pietro, prompting Monica to ask if he died because of Ultron—something she wasn’t supposed to know about. It soon became apparent that Wanda, in fact, knew more than she had let on. “You’re not my neighbor, and you’re definitely not my friend,” she told Monica. “You are a stranger and an outsider, and right now you are trespassing here—and I want you to leave.” She then sent Monica hurtling through town, outside of the barrier, effectively banishing her for knowing too much. The lesson here? Stay out of Wanda’s business!

Wanda Maximoff destroys Ultron sentries in Avengers: Age of Ultron.

8. Wanda becomes an Avenger. (Avengers: Age of Ultron)
It all comes down to choices. With the battle against Ultron underway in Sokovia, Wanda briefly felt overwhelmed, only to receive words of wisdom from Hawkeye. “It doesn’t matter what you did or what you were,” he told Wanda, who’d harbored resentment towards Tony Stark—and, by association, the Avengers—since childhood. “If you go out there, you fight, and you fight to kill. Stay in here, you’re good; I’ll send your brother to come find out. But if you step out that door, you are an Avenger. All right?” Not only did Wanda come out of hiding, but she went on to help the Avengers stop Ultron once and for all. As far as first impressions go, Wanda pretty much nailed it.

Wanda Maximoff studies the Darkhold in WandaVision.

7. Wanda embraces the dark side. (WandaVision)
The Darkhold, aka the Book of the Damned, says The Scarlet Witch is not born, she’s forged... and she’s more powerful than the Sorcerer Supreme. Can you blame Wanda for wanting to read it?! And if the book also happens to contain a spell that might reunite Wanda with her twin sons, again we ask: Can you really blame Wanda?!

Wanda Maximoff kills Proxima Midnight in Avengers: Infinity War.

6. Wanda shows up for her sisters. (Avengers: Infinity War)
With the Chitauri army about to breach the barrier in Wakanda, Wanda left Vision’s side to aid the Avengers on the battlefield. Proxima Midnight thought she had Wanda all alone, but Black Widow and Okoye teamed up to take her down. Then, using her powers of telekinesis, Wanda literally removed Thanos’ child from the fight... for good!

Wanda Maximoff messes with the Avengers’ minds in Avengers: Age of Ultron.

5. Wanda goes mental. (Avengers: Age of Ultron)
Not everyone has time for mind games... but Wanda? She has all the time! Much like the audience, the Avengers immediately fell under Wanda’s spell. First, she gave Iron Man a waking nightmare in Sokovia. Then, she used the same trick to torment Captain America, Black Widow, and Thor in South Africa. Using her powers of mental manipulation, she finally turned Bruce Banner into the Hulk, sending him on a tear. As Loki can attest, it’s not easy to keep up with the Avengers—but Wanda did it with ease.

Wanda Maximoff becomes The Scarlet Witch in WandaVision.

4. Which witch wins? (WandaVision)
After lying in wait, Agatha Harkness emerged as Wanda’s biggest threat yet: a witch who wanted to steal her chaos magic. But after accepting her destiny as The Scarlet Witch, Wanda managed to overpower Agatha and defiantly told her, “I don’t need you to tell me who I am.” So... who is she? Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness just may answer that question.

Wanda Maximoff destroys the Mind Stone and fends off Thanos in Avengers: Infinity War.

3. Wanda makes an unthinkable sacrifice. (Avengers: Infinity War)
What does a Super Hero do when faced with an impossible decision? Only Wanda possessed the power to destroy the Mind Stone—and, with it, Vision. Captain America argued, “We don’t trade lives,” but as Thanos advanced on the Avengers, it became clear that Wanda had no other choice but to sacrifice the love of her life in order to save the lives of countless others. “If he gets this Stone, half the universe dies,” Vision reminded her. “It’s not fair. It shouldn’t be you, but it is. It’s all right. You could never hurt me. I just feel you." Fighting back tears, Wanda looked lovingly into Vision’s eyes as she blasted the Mind Stone to bits... only for Thanos to use the Time Stone to undo her heroic act, pluck the Mind Stone from Vision’s forehead, and turn Wanda into dust!

Wanda Maximoff uses chaos magic to recreate and control the town of Westview in WandaVision.

2. Wanda remodels Westview. (WandaVision)
Talk about the power of manifestation! Subsumed by grief, Wanda created the very home Vision had wanted them “to grow old in” together... that is, before Thanos destroyed him during the battle of Wakanda. Using chaos magic, Wanda erected a barrier around Westview, New Jersey—one that would give her and Vision a chance at happiness and protect them from the outside world. The only problem? Wanda’s Hex removed free will, so it wasn’t exactly happily ever after for anyone else.

Wanda Maximoff faces Thanos on the battlefield in Avengers: Endgame.

1. Wanda gets her revenge. (Avengers: Endgame)
Wanda tried her best to protect Vision from Thanos during the battle of Wakanda, but she was no match for the Mad Titan. (In fairness, Thanos had just acquired the sixth and final Infinity Stone.) Five years later, after Wanda had been blipped out existence with half the universe, the Avengers brought her back to life. Wanda came back seeing red—literally—as she came face-to-face with Thanos and said, “You took everything from me!” What followed was a master class in productive anger. As Wanda walloped Thanos with finesse and furor, he all but admitted defeat as he directed his entire army to attack her. Thanos may not have remembered her, but Wanda made a lasting impression on him—and on fans, who got a glimpse at just how powerful she really is.

Doctor Strange’s Maddening Journey Through the MCU

By Zach Johnson

It’s a mad, mad world.

In 2016, Benedict Cumberbatch originated the role of Stephen Strange in Marvel Studios’ Doctor Strange, introducing audiences to a more mystical side of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). It’s been a strange journey since then—one that saw Stephen study the Mystic Arts, get blipped out of existence, and crack open the Multiverse. Speaking of the Multiverse, with Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness opening in theaters Friday, we’re taking a spell-binding trip down memory lane.

To start, let’s revisit when Stephen literally crashed into the MCU with Doctor Strange. An arrogant and renowned surgeon, a distracted Stephen lost control of his car one rainy night—and with it, his hands. He resented those who helped him survive the crash, including his former girlfriend, Dr. Christine Palmer (Rachel McAdams). “No one could have done better,” she assured him, to which he curtly replied, “I could have done better.” Ignoring everyone’s advice, Stephen sought out expensive, experimental procedures in the hopes of healing his hands. Alas, it was no use. One day, he heard about a man named Jonathan Pangborn (Benjamin Bratt), a former paraplegic who—for reasons medicine could never explain—had regained total use of his body. After Stephen located him, Jonathan shared cryptic instructions: “The place you’re looking for is Kamar-Taj. But the cost there is high… I’m not talking about money. Good luck.”

So, to Kathmandu, Nepal, Stephen went. Just before he got tangled up in a street fight, Karl Mordo (Chiwetel Ejiofor) appeared. “Forget everything you think you know,” Mordo told him, before introducing him to the Ancient One (Tilda Swinton)—who confirmed she had healed Jonathan “in a way,” as she knows “how to reorient the spirit to better heal the body.” Given his medical background, Stephen scoffed. “You’re a man looking at the world through a keyhole,” the Ancient One said. “You’ve spent your whole life trying to widen that keyhole to see more, to know more. Now, on hearing that it can be widened—in ways you can’t imagine—you reject the possibility?”

The Ancient One teaches Stephen Strange the ways of the Mystic Arts in Doctor Strange (2016).

Feeling superior, Stephen replied, “There is no such thing as spirit. We are made of matter and nothing more. You’re just another tiny, momentary speck within an indifferent universe.” The Ancient One then pushed his astral form outside of his physical form. “You think you know how the world works? You think that this material universe is all there is? What is real? What mysteries lie beyond the reach of your senses?” she asked. “At the root of existence, mind and matter meet. Thoughts shape reality. This universe is only one of an infinite number: worlds without end, some benevolent and life-giving, others filled with malice and hunger—dark places where powers older than time lie ravenous and waiting. Who are you in this vast Multiverse, Mr. Strange?” (Something tells us that question will finally be answered in the sequel…)

Mystified, Stephen begged to become a student of the Mystic Arts, and the Ancient One eventually acquiesced. She then explained some very basic principles: “We harness energy drawn from other dimensions of the Multiverse—to cast spells, to conjure shields and weapons, to make magic.” Stephen immersed himself in his studies and befriended Wong (Benedict Wong), a sorcerer and librarian. Wong told him about the Ancient One’s private collection, which Stephen would later borrow in secret. With it, he learned how to use the Eye of Agamotto, a relic that can manipulate time. (He didn’t know then that it contained one of six Infinity Stones, but more on that later.) Mordo and Wong discouraged Stephen’s curiosity, as the relic could create spatial paradoxes and time loops. As Wong said, “We do not tamper with natural law.”

Wong then explained that the sorcerers protect Earth from mystical threats, and there are sanctums in Hong Kong, London, and New York. “The Sanctums protect the world,” Mordo added, “and the sorcerers protect the Sanctums.” After learning about Dormammu, a powerful entity from the Dark Dimension, Stephen had enough. “I’m out. I came here to heal my hands,” he protested, “not to fight in some mystical war.”

Doctor Strange uses the Eye of Agamotto to turn back time in Doctor Strange (2016).

Timing, ironically, was not on his side. Within moments, the zealot Kaecilius (Mads Mikkelsen) appeared and attempted to steal the Eye of Agamotto from him. Stephen escaped to the New York sanctum, with Kaecilius and his followers in hot pursuit. Although Stephen was saved by the Cloak of Levitation, he was badly wounded and turned to Christine for help. After filling Christine in on his adventures, then fighting off one of Kaecilius’ followers, Stephen returned to the Sanctum. There, the Ancient One promoted him to Master Strange of New York—but he tried to turn her down. “When I became a doctor, I swore an oath to do no harm, and I have just killed a man,” he reasoned. “I am not doing that again. I became a doctor to save lives, not take them.”

Stephen then accused the Ancient One of drawing power from the Dark Dimension, as Kaecilius had claimed. “She is not who you think she is,” he told Mordo, who refused to accept it. After Kaecilius returned, Stephen moved the fight to the Mirror Dimension. There, the Ancient One saved them—and, in doing so, confirmed the accusations. She was badly wounded, so Stephen brought her to Christine. While on the operating table, her astral form left her body and Stephen followed. “You wonder what I see in your future?” she asked him. “I never saw your future—only its possibilities. You have such a capacity for goodness. You always exceled—but not because you crave success, but because of your fear of failure… Arrogance and fear still keep you from learning the simplest and most significant lesson of all: It’s not about you.” After revealing that Jonathan, too, drew power from the Dark Dimension walk, she said, “As you well know, sometimes one must break the rules in order to serve the greater good.” Finally, she told Stephen, “We don’t get to choose our time. Death is what gives life meaning.” (It’s a lesson the Stephen fans would meet years later in What If…? should’ve known.)

Stephen, Mordo, and Wong then traveled to Hong Kong, where Stephen took the fight directly to Dormammu. Confronting the powerful entity in the Dark Dimension, Stephen used the Eye of Agamotto to trap Dormammu—and himself—in a time loop. Finally, Dormammu accepted Stephen’s bargain and agreed to leave Earth alone. Stephen won the fight, but he lost Mordo’s respect. “You still think there will be no consequences, Strange? No price to pay?” he asked. “We broke our rules, just like [the Ancient One]. The bill comes due. Always!” Disillusioned, he left to walk his own path.

Stephen next appeared in Thor: Ragnarok (2017), after Thor (Chris Hemsworth) and Loki (Tom Hiddleston) mysteriously appeared. “I keep a watch list of individuals and beings from other realms that may be a thread to this world,” he told Thor. “Your adopted brother, Loki, is one of those beings… So, why bring him here to New York?” Thor explained that if they found their father, Odin (Anthony Hopkins), they would promptly leave Earth. Stephen obliged, creating a portal and sending them to Norway.

Doctor Strange and Wong learn of Thanos’ master plan in Avengers: Infinity War (2018).

Stephen encountered even more Avengers in Avengers: Infinity War (2018). After Thanos (Josh Brolin) acquired the Space Stone, Heimdall (Idris Elba) summoned the Bifrost to send Bruce Banner aka the Hulk (Mark Ruffalo) to Earth, where he crash-landed in the Sanctum Santorum and warned Stephen and Wong of the danger ahead. With no time to waste, Stephen used a portal to contact Tony Stark aka Iron Man (Disney Legend Robert Downey Jr.). “We need your help,” he explained. “Look, it’s not overselling it to say the fate of the universe is at stake.” Back at the Santorum, Wong explained how the Infinity Stones each control an essential aspect of existence—including the one Stephen wore around his neck. “Our oath to protect the Time Stone cannot change,” Stephen told them. “And this Stone may be the best chance we have against Thanos.”

It wasn’t long before two members of the Black Order descended upon New York City to retrieve the Time Stone. An enchantment prevented Ebony Maw (Tom Vaughan-Lawlor) from stealing the Eye of Agamotto, however, so he took Stephen prisoner aboard his ship. Tony followed them, while another young hero, Peter Parker aka Spider-Man (Tom Holland), snuck onboard to help. Once onboard, Ebony Maw used dozens of microsurgical blades to torture Stephen in the hopes of convincing him to give up the Time Stone—but his plan was thwarted, thanks to Peter’s pop culture prowess. With Ebony Maw no longer a threat, the trio debated what their next move should be. Tony’s plan to fight Thanos on Titan won, with one condition. “You have to understand, if it comes to saving you or the kid or the Time Stone, I will not hesitate to let either of you die,” Stephen told him. “I can’t—because the universe depends on it.”

Stephen Strange sustains an injury in battle.

After teaming up with the Guardians of the Galaxy, they landed on Titan to prepare for battle. As they worked out a plan, Stephen went forward in time to view alternate futures—and out of 14,000,605 possibilities, he only saw them defeat Thanos in one. Despite the odds, they put up a good fight—but when Tony was in danger, Stephen bargained to save him: “Spare his life,” he told Thanos, “and I will give you the stone.” Successful, Thanos headed to Earth to retrieve the sixth and final Infinity Stone. “Why would you do that?” Tony wondered. Stephen replied, “We’re in the endgame now.” After Thanos acquired the last Infinity Stone and killed half the universe with the snap of his fingers, Stephen turned to his new ally and said, “Tony, there was no other way.”

With that, Stephen turned to dust.

In Avengers: Endgame (2019), five years had passed after Thanos’ galactic genocide—but Super Heroes like Steve Rogers aka Captain America (Chris Evans) and Natasha Romanoff aka Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson) never gave up on trying to find a way to bring back their fallen friends. After Scott Lang aka Ant-Man (Paul Rudd) fortuitously returned from the Quantum Realm, Tony unlocked the secret to time travel. Together, the surviving Avengers devised a plan to go back in time, steal the Infinity Stones, and bring everyone back to life. Their plan worked—although not exactly as expected, as Thanos caught wind of their efforts and reigned fire on the Avengers compound. They fought valiantly, and just when it seemed all hope was lost, Stephen and his fellow sorcerers opened portals that welcomed the avenged heroes back onto the battlefield.

During the fight, Tony called over to Stephen and said, “Hey, you said one out of 14 million we win, yeah? Tell me this is it.” Stephen replied, “If I tell you what happens, it won’t happen.” Later, Tony saw the opportunity to seize the six Infinity Stones. He looked at Stephen, who pointed his finger, confirming it was his 1/14,000,605 chance.

Stephen Strange conjures powerful shields in What If...? (2021)

Marvel Studios’ first-ever animated series What If…? (2021) flipped the script on the live-action stories of the MCU. Stephen’s debut appearance featured Christine dying in car accident, prompting him to travel across the world and study the Mystic Arts. After he became the Sorcerer Supreme, he manipulated time, again and again, to save Christine—and each time, she died. “Why does this keep happening?” he asked. “Aren’t we allowed to be happy?” He learned that Christine’s death is an Absolute Point in time—i.e., it’s unchangeable. Stephen disagreed and set off to find the Lost Library of Cagliostro. There, he discovered a book that claimed he could “gain the power through the absorption of other beings” in order to change an Absolute Point.

Another sorcerer, O’Bengh (voiced by Ike Amadi), advised against going down this dark path. “There is a fine line between devotion and delusion,” he told Stephen aka Strange Supreme. “Love can break more than your heart. It can shatter your mind.” Strange Supreme was undeterred, and gradually absorbed more beings. In the same universe, an echo of the Ancient One appeared warned another Stephen that two possible timelines were occurring in the same universe. “If the other Strange succeeds,” she explained, “the resulting temporal paradox will destroy this universe.”

Strange Supreme shows Captain Carter a magic trick in What If...? (2021).

Stephen was then summoned by Strange Supreme, who ultimately absorbed him, too. Strange Supreme managed to save Christine, but she only saw him as a monster. And as reality began to crumble, she began to fade away. Desperate to make things right, Strange Supreme addressed The Watcher (voiced by Jeffrey Wright), who is not allowed to intervene. “I didn’t mean for this to happen!” Strange Supreme shouted. He later got a chance at redemption after Ultron (voiced by Ross Marquand) threatened the Multiverse. The Watcher assembled a team of variants—including Strange Supreme—to separate Ultron’s body from the Infinity Stones. Strange Supreme used a protection spell to help his new friends—dubbed the Guardians of the Multiverse—fulfill their mission. They ultimately succeeded, but Killmonger (voiced by Michael B. Jordan) betrayed them and stole the Infinity Stones. After trying to stop him, Strange Supreme had an epiphany: “We were never meant to win,” he said. “We were here to separate the stones from the body.” Together, Strange Supreme and the Watcher sealed Killmonger in a time-looped pocket dimension, which the former promised to watch over. “I have nothing but time,” he said. “And besides… what are friends for?”

Doctor Strange tries to make everyone forget Peter Parker’s alter ego in Spider-Man: No Way Home (2021).

The live-action Stephen next appeared in Spider-Man: No Way Home (2021), in which he half-joked to Peter that Wong had become Sorcerer Supreme “on a technicality” because he had “blipped five years.” Peter wanted him to turn back time, to protect his civilian identity, but Stephen reminded him that he no longer had the Time Stone. Using the Runes of Kof-Kol (“a standard spell of forgetting”), he might be able to help. Wong argued the spell was “too dangerous,” but Stephen pitied Peter and reminded Wong they’d used it for far less: “Come on, Wong. Hasn’t he been through enough?”

As Stephen began his incantation, he said, “The entire world is about to forget that Peter Parker is Spider-Man, including me.” That caused Peter to panic and ask to exclude certain people. Stephen called it off, explaining, “That spell was completely out of control. If I hadn’t shut it down, something catastrophic could have happened.”

As it turned out, something catastrophic did happen. “That little spell you botched where you wanted everyone to forget that Peter Parker’s Spider-Man? It started pulling in everyone who knows Peter Parker’s Spider-Man from every universe into this one,” Stephen said after Peter encountered Otto Octavius aka Doctor Octopus (Alfred Molina) and Norman Osborne aka Green Goblin (Willem Dafoe). Ominously, Stephen warned Peter, “The Multiverse is a concept about which we know frightenedly little.”

After sending Peter to round up other Super Villains, Stephen produced an ancient relic: The Macchina di Kadavus. “I’ve trapped your corrupted spell inside,” he explained, “and once I finish the proper ritual, it’ll reverse the spell and send these guys back to their universes.” Peter wanted to rehabilitate them, but Stephen dismissed that idea. “In the grand calculus of the Multiverse,” he argued, “their sacrifice means infinitely more than their lives. I’m sorry kid: If they die, they die.” Standing up for himself, Peter stole the Macchina di Kadavus—and to everyone’s surprise, he managed to trap Stephen in the Mirror Dimension for the next 12 hours!

Stephen Strange sends Peter Parker on a mission in Spider-Man: No Way Home (2021)..

By the time Stephen reappeared, he came face-to-face with three Peter Parkers. “Look, I am really impressed that you’ve managed to give them all a second chance, kid,” he told Peter (Holland), “but this has to end. Now.” The Green Goblin detonated the Macchina di Kadavus, cracking the Multiverse wide open. “They’re starting to come through and I can’t stop them,” Stephen said. “They’re here because of you.” And so, Peter asked Stephen to cast a new spell to make everyone forget him. “It would work,” Stephen said. “But you gotta understand, that would mean that everyone who knows and loves you, we’d have no memory of you. It would be as though you never existed.” Peter said he understood, and Stephen conjured a spell that erased him from memory.

So, where does that leave Stephen now? In Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, he will traverse the mind-bending and dangerous alternate realities of the Multiverse—with the help of mystical allies—to confront a mysterious new adversary.

Matt Braly on the Ribbiting End of Disney Channel’s Amphibia

By Zach Johnson

Will Anne Boonchuy get her “hoppy” ending?

After three seasons, the Disney Channel animated series Amphibia will conclude this month, first with the one-hour episode “All In” on Saturday, May 7, at 8 p.m. ET/PT, followed by the half-hour episode “The Hardest Thing” on Saturday, May 14, at 8 p.m. ET/PT. (All three seasons of Amphibia are available to stream on Disney+.) We recently sat down with series creator and executive producer Matt Braly for an extensive conversation about the series, ranging from his long-planned three-season story arc to his pride in seeing how Anne (voiced by Brenda Song) evolved since her debut in 2019.

The conversation below has been edited and condensed for clarity.

D23: How does it feel for you to say goodbye to Amphibia after three seasons?
Matt Braly (MB): I’m sort of feeling all the emotions at once. I’m so grateful and relieved, but I’m also sad. It’s very bittersweet. But in the end, it feels right. This story has always been written with this arc and this conclusion. Some of my favorite books and movies are my favorite because of their endings. I think about all these great stories, and many of them, it’s the ending that really defines them. And for me, when you see the final scenes of this show, I think you will understand the show even more than you do now.

Amphibia, a “frog out of water” story, follows Anne Boonchuy, a fearless teen who is transported to strange and mysterious marshland inhabited by frog people.

D23: You’d always planned a three-season arc. Did everything go as planned, or did your plan deviate based on story needs? Does the finale align with your original vision?
MB: I had a broad outline and goals, but sometimes you’d come to these narrative choke points and realize, “Oh, the character would never do that.” So, we had an outline, but we had some flexibility to bob and weave. These characters speak to you, and they tell you what feels right. When I say that it’s been planned, I mean the big, broad beats. For example, at the end of season two, I always knew they were going to fight with this king and they were all going to get stuck on Earth somehow at the end of it. I had these big tentpoles figured out, but I had an amazing writing team who would take those goals and tentpoles and turn them into great episodes.

D23: Let’s talk about Anne’s journey throughout the series. How has she grown with each passing season? Where does she still have to go as we’re heading into the finale?
MB: Anne’s character arc is the most important to me, and it is both obvious and nuanced. The obvious character arc is Anne becoming more of a selfless person—not being this irresponsible, bratty kid, which she was in season one. You can see her growing and changing across all three seasons, becoming a much more responsible person. Look no further than the beginning of season three, when the Plantars—these interdimensional frogs—are basically her charges, and she’s taking care of them. She’s like a parent to them, which is a delightful role reversal for this character who basically wouldn’t follow the rules before. So, that’s the broad, obvious character arc.

The second character arc for Anne is about self-love and self-esteem. That one is a little bit more nuanced, because you have to look at season one and the dynamics she had with her friends. You might have thought to yourself, “Why is this girl getting pushed around so much? Why doesn’t she put her foot down and stand up for herself?” She’d been under Sasha’s thumb for their whole life—their whole friendship! Finally, at the end of season one, there was this great moment where Anne put her foot down and said, “I’m not going to do that. I’m going to do what I think is right.” The truth is, she was only able to do that because somebody else showed her love: Sprig and the Plantars. That built her self-esteem up and taught her that maybe she shouldn’t be stepped all over; maybe she is someone who is deserving of love, who is growing this kind of self-love. That is the No. 1 thing to look forward to as we approach our season three finale—the combination of that arc, that self-love and that self-respect.

Amphibia was inspired by creator Matt Braly’s happiest childhood memories.

D23: It’s been interesting to watch the ebbs and flows in Anne’s relationships with Sasha and Marcy. How were you able to depict their dynamics in a way that felt real?
MB: It’s a tricky needle to thread, but you’re absolutely right: This is a show about ebbs and flows. It’s about complicated relationships. One of the very first images I ever did for the show was all three girls sitting on the couch, kind of sleeping, and Sasha had her arms around the other two. And at the top, it just said, “It’s complicated.” You know what it means. That was really my mission statement for these three girls. None of them is a cartoon villain; they all have very nuanced motivations for what they do. It was really important for me to show that everyone was a little bit at fault for what went wrong in their relationship. Sometimes we need to grow apart to grow back together. Sometimes you’ve been locked into a group and its dynamics for so long that the second you exit that bubble and make relationships with new people, you almost become a different person. All three girls have done that; they’ve separated from each other, they’ve made connections with new people, and they’ve grown independent of one another. And I think that really changes things when they do come back together. My own experience with friendships was deeply influential on this. I have the advantage of being close to 35 years old now and looking back at these relationships. It really allowed me to think about how we grew apart, we grew back together, we grew apart again, and we found each other again. There’s this beauty in life of these relationships that ebb and flow. That’s what I wanted to bottle up. It’s tricky, though!

D23: In season three, Anne reunited with her parents on Earth. It’s been fun to see how their dynamic has evolved since she’s been gone. Anne’s not the same girl anymore.
MB: It’s great because her parents immediately are like, “Oh, she seems different.” Even in the very first episode, “The New Normal,” it’s like, “There’s something different about our little girl.” It really crescendos in “Escape to Amphibia,” where they give her a pep talk and Mom is like, “You’re not my little girl anymore. You can do this. You can do anything. We believe in you.” The only reason that’s possible is because Anne went outside of their bubble and made this new connection on her own—and found this independence and learned all this stuff about herself. I think it’s really true to the idea that your parents are wise and they love you; they’re always giving you great advice, and you just don’t listen, for whatever reason. My headcanon is that her parents have absolutely been trying to steer her in this direction forever, but kids—especially me as a teen—just don’t listen. I had to go out. I had to make those mistakes and learn those lessons, independent of them, to really come back home and be like, “You were right.” That’s basically what happened with Anne. She comes back home, and her parents are ready to lecture her, and then they see she has already learned those lessons—that she’s become a more independent, responsible person. To me, that’s really gratifying.

Creator and executive producer Matt Braly had always planned a three-season arc for Disney Channel’s Amphibia.

D23: It’s hard to pick favorites, but what would you consider to be some of the standout episodes that encapsulate exactly what you wanted Amphibia to be and do?
MB: I love the episode “Toad Tax,” which is the very first episode in season one where Anne really makes a stand. She stands up to these toads who are abusing these frogs, and it’s so gratifying to see. She used to not really being part of this community and didn’t really care that much. And here she is throwing her safety on the line in order to stand up for them. That stuff is very emotional for me; watching the very start of her change is quite a big moment. I also really love the episode “Reunion,” which is our season one finale, because when she finally stands up to Sasha, it just gives me chills. Her whole life, this girl has been saying, “End of discussion!” And that really was at the end of it. And finally, Anne is putting her foot down. And then “True Colors”… we barely were able to produce that episode, if I’m being honest, in the sense that this is an 11-minute, episodic comedy with a budget to match. We have a very specific production, and we have a very specific pipeline. The idea that we were making this Star Wars-like epic finale, I’m just so proud of the team for coming together and problem-solving. And then in season three, there’s a couple episodes that get me. I love at the end of “Adventures in Catsitting” when Mr. Boonchuy tells the Plantars, “You’ll never owe us anything because you took in our daughter. That means the world to us, so don’t worry about being freeloaders or guests.” The performance from Brian Sounalath and [Disney Legend] Bill Farmer really gets to me. And I love anything with Mom, because it’s my mom. [Editor’s note: Matt’s mother, On Braly, voices Mrs. Boonchuy.] I’m obviously geared to feel a certain way, but when Mrs. Boonchuy is wiping Anne’s tears in “Escape to Amphibia” and is really [recognizing how much she’s grown]—man, I just I love that so much. Lastly, I really do love these final episodes—especially “The Hardest Thing,” which is like the final final one. It’s a crazy, ambitious episode emotionally. I can’t spoil anything, but I’m so proud of the team for what they were able to pull off in that one.

The voice cast of Amphibia includes Brenda Song as Anne Boonchuy, Justin Felbinger as Sprig Plantar, Amanda Leighton as Polly Plantar, and Disney Legend Bill Farmer as Hop Pop.

D23: What can we expect from the final two episodes?
MB: I really want people to think about that hidden arc of self-love when they’re watching these episodes and to think about how, when you get pressured into things, a lot of that comes from this place of not having confidence, not having self-esteem. I feel like that, ultimately, is a big part of Anne’s story. There’s so much action and stuff in these final two episodes; the animation team just went crazy! It’s so good. The storyboarding is top notch, the writing is great, the music is phenomenal. It’s very epic. But at the end of the day, I don’t want to lose that small, intimate story as well. I hope people can still focus on that—even though there’s giant robots and explosions and stuff!

D23: Is there anything you want to say to the fans directly?
MB: The biggest and most heartfelt thank you! Truly, without your engagement, there is no show. And we really looked to that stuff—the fan art, the engagement—as our motivation for working. It can be hard sometimes in television to write, write, write, and work your butt off. Sometimes it feels like it gets out there and you’re like, “Oh, I hope people saw it and enjoyed it.” But the feedback has been so helpful and so great for us. It really brought us a lot of joy. During COVID-19, it was really difficult sometimes to pick yourself up and try to get back into your work. We always remember that we have these great fans who we just want to do right by, and so I really appreciate that. It’s hard to say goodbye to the show, but the show itself is about that process. Your life changes, and changes are often scary, but they’re an essential and beautiful part of life.

Everything to Watch During Asian American, Native Hawaiians, and Pacific Islanders Heritage Month 2022

By Victoria Hunt

The Walt Disney Company uplifts stories of Asian Americans, Native Hawaiians, and Pacific Islanders (AANHPIs) around the world. Through transformative storytelling and a focused approach, Disney is uniquely positioned to honor the diversity of AANHPI communities by amplifying the voices of AANHPI leaders, employees, talent, and creators. To help celebrate these diverse cultures during AANHPI Heritage Month, we’ve compiled a list of some of our favorite Disney movies and shows. From Disney and Pixar’s new film Turning Red on Disney+ to the classic Lilo & Stitch, we’ve got you covered.

Turning Red (2022)
Disney and Pixar’s latest film has quickly become an instant classic. It probably comes as no surprise that Mulan made the list. Mulan is the epitome of dignity, bravery, and selflessness as she attempts to save her ailing father from being drafted in Imperial China. Despite the life set out before her, she decides to take matters into her own hands and disguise herself as a male warrior, taking her father’s place.

Raya and the Last Dragon (2021)
There is nothing we love more than seeing young heroines on screen. In Walt Disney Animation Studios’ Raya and the Last Dragon, Raya (voiced by Kelly Marie Tran) is a lone warrior who must save her home of Kumandra by finding the last dragon to fight against evil sea monsters that threaten to destroy reality as she knows it. The movie, available on Disney+, also features other well-known Asian actresses including Awkwafina and Sandra Oh.

HOLEY-MOLEY FORE-EVER (2019- )

The premiere episode features special guest stars the Muppets, with TV personality and actress Jeannie Mai returning as sideline correspondent for another season. A first-generation Vietnamese Chinese American, Mai has spent her career not only supporting women in various industries but also advocating to end human trafficking. Previous seasons of the hilarious mini-golf series, hosted executive produced by basketball star and the show’s resident golf pro, Stephen Curry, are currently available on Hulu.

Lilo & Stitch (2002)
What would this list be without our favorite dysfunctional duo? Lilo (voiced by Daveigh Chase) is a young girl being raised in Hawaii by her older sister. No matter how hard she tries, no one seems to understand her... until she meets a blue, slobbery alien on-the-run, Stitch. The two set off on a series of adventures to dispel their loneliness and find the true meaning of ‘ohana along the way. Available to stream on Disney+.

Big Sky (2020- )
For those of you who have been tuning into Big Sky on ABC, the season two finale is fast approaching. Mark your calendars for Thursday, May 19, at 10 p.m. ET/PT when Ren (Janina Gavankar) and Jag Bhullar (Vinny Chhibber) find a new familial bond and decide how to handle their father Veer (Bernard White) after he crosses a serious line—which is really saying something for a family that runs a drug cartel. The show’s newest series regular,  Gavankar, is an Indian/Dutch actress, writer, director, musician, and producer who transitions effortlessly between film, television shows, and video games. She shares the screen with renowned actors while simultaneously forging her path in tech and music with tremendous success. Season two episodes are available the day after air to stream on Hulu, where you can also stream all of season one.

Mira, Royal Detective (2020- )
From May 2 to June 20, this Disney Junior series will feature four Bollywood-inspired specials. For over 100 stories, the show has highlighted the rich, diverse cultures of India with an inspiring leading young girl named Mira, voiced by Leela Ladnier. The series is also available to stream on Disney+.

Amphibia (2019-)
Before production began in 2017, Thai-American series creator and executive producer Matt Braly had a distinct vision that spanned three seasons for Amphibia, a frog-out-of-water series inspired by summers Braly spent in Thailand as a child. Now in its third season, the final journey for 13-year-old Anne Boonchuy (voiced by Brenda Song) and her Amphibian friends will conclude in the series’ finale, spanning two special length episodes on May 7 and May 14.

Between these feel-good classics and current favorites, we are sure that there is something for everyone to help celebrate AANHPI Heritage Month!
