Bay Lake The 450-acre body of water east of the Contemporary Resort at Walt Disney World. During construction of Walt Disney World, one of the first tasks was to clear the muck out of Bay Lake. On doing so, Walt Disney World executives were delighted to discover that beautiful white sand was covering the bottom. This sand was utilized to create attractive beaches. Discovery Island, a nature preserve which could be visited by guests from 1974 to 1999, is located in Bay Lake. The lake is connected to the Seven Seas Lagoon in front of Magic Kingdom Park by a unique water bridge over the main road to the Contemporary Hotel. Hotel guests can rent various types of watercraft for cruising on the lake. The Fort Wilderness campground and Wilderness Lodge are located beside Bay Lake, as was the former River Country.
