On this day in 1901, Carl Barks born, not in Duckburg, U.S.A., but in Merrill, Oregon. In 1935, after applying for a job at Disney, Carl fit the “bill” and was hired as an artist. Things were just ducky for Carl and in just a few months he moved to the story department, collaborating on stories for the cartoons including the Donald Duck shorts. He worked on dozens of the cartoons and helped create Donald’s nephews, Huey, Dewey, and Louie, for the 1938 short, Donald’s Nephews. In 1942, Carl began developing Donald Duck comic books, and continued to do so for the next quarter century, creating Donald Duck’s Duckburg neighbors such as Gyro Gearloose, Flintheart Glomgold, Gladstone Gander, Magica De Spell, the criminal Beagle Boys, and the richest duck in the world, Scrooge McDuck. In 1991, Carl got a feather in his cap when he was named a Disney Legend.
