“Avast there! It be too late to alter course, mateys!” International Talk Like a Pirate Day is upon us once again—which feels like the perfect time to reflect on one of Disney’s legendary movie franchises, Pirates of the Caribbean! The fifth installment, Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales, is already in production; helmed by Kon-Tiki’s Espen Sandberg and Joachim Ronning, the film will set sail into theaters in 2017. At the recent D23 EXPO 2015, Johnny Depp himself—resplendent in full Captain Jack Sparrow regalia—surprised the audience during the “Worlds, Galaxies, and Universes: Live Action at the Walt Disney Studios” panel. Johnny helped Walt Disney Pictures president of production Sean Bailey announce more casting for the film, including Orlando Bloom (returning as Will Turner), Geoffrey Rush (back as Captain Barbossa), and new-to-the-franchise Oscar® winner Javier Bardem.
As for the film’s plot: Thrust into an all-new adventure, a down-on-his-luck Captain Jack finds the winds of ill-fortune blowing even more strongly when deadly ghost pirates led by his old nemesis, the terrifying Captain Salazar (Bardem), escape from the Devil’s Triangle, determined to kill every pirate at sea… including him. Captain Jack’s only hope of survival lies in seeking out the legendary Trident of Poseidon, a powerful artifact that bestows upon its possessor total control over the seas. The film also stars Kaya Scodelario (The Maze Runner), Brenton Thwaites (Maleficent), and Golshifteh Farahani (The Patience Stone).
