Icons of Disney Storytelling: Peter Sohn

By Zach Johnson

In this special series of intimate interviews, D23.com speaks with the most talented, prolific, and articulate storytellers from across The Walt Disney Company.

Is there anything Peter Sohn can’t do?

Sohn, who grew up in New York and graduated from California Institute of the Arts (Cal Arts), joined Pixar Animation Studios in September 2000, where he worked in the art and story departments for the Oscar®-winning feature film Finding Nemo (2003). For his next project, The Incredibles (2004), Sohn worked in the art, story, and animation departments—proving that, much like the Parr family, he’s up for any challenge. After that, he worked as a story artist for WALL•E (2008)—another Academy Award® winner.

From there, Sohn made his directorial debut with the short film Partly Cloudy (2009). The following years saw him work on beloved titles such as Toy Story 3 (2010), Brave (2012), and Inside Out (2015), to name a few. Sohn also directed the original feature film The Good Dinosaur (2015), in which he voiced the character Forrest Woodbush. In fact, Sohn has voiced many Pixar characters over the years, from Ratatouille’s Emile and Monsters University’s Scott “Squishy” Squibbles to Luca’s Ciccio and Lightyear’s Sox.

Currently the Vice President, Creative, at Pixar Animation Studios, Sohn is hard at work putting the finishing touches on Elemental, a new original feature film releasing on June 16. Set in Element City, where fire, water, land, and air residents live together, the film introduces Ember (voiced by Leah Lewis), a tough, quick-witted, and fiery young woman whose nascent friendship with Wade (voiced by Mamoudou Athie), a fun, sappy, go-with-the-flow guy, challenges her beliefs about the world they live in.

Now, Sohn joins D23: The Official Disney Fan Club for a wide-ranging Q&A...

Darla, a red-headed girl with big green eyes and freckles, screams as she sits in a dentist’s chair, exposing her silver braces and headgear. She is wearing a purple sweater and a green bib, and she is pointing forward as dentist’s tools fly everywhere.

D23: How did it feel when you first joined Pixar Animation Studios?
Peter Sohn (PS): I remember meeting a tribe of filmmakers who were very passionate and being really inspired by their love of filmmaking and building such universal characters. I didn’t know anything about CG animation; Toy Story was released during my first year at Cal Arts, but I remember seeing that and wanting to understand more.

D23: What makes Pixar the perfect home to tell the kinds of stories you want to tell?
PS: The community here is very supportive. People care about how to have fun and how to tell stories. Whether it’s notes, riffing, or playing with ideas, it all comes from a place of trying to help fulfill a concept. There’s such a sincere want to find the truth of the characters and the story—in every department. When you grow something here, people understand how fragile a seed of an idea can be, because they’ve done it. They’ve all been in those trenches, so they share advice: “That’s a pitfall! Be careful! But if you need to fall into it, we’ll be here.” Pixar is just super supportive, creatively.

D23: How has the legacy of Disney storytelling impacted your own work at Pixar?
PS: Oh, man! Seeing animated Disney films as a kid made a big impression on me, because the stories were so universal and creative and artful. I’ve always wanted to work for Disney. As a kid, when I found out how those films were made and I learned about the people behind them, that became my goal. I would read about them in books, and my role models would tell me to “observe life” and “find fun ways to caricature and translate it in storytelling.” That became the DNA of how I approach drawing or looking at things—all because of all of those early philosophies they had formed while making those early Disney films. Now, when I’m listening to voices or riffing with people, there’s always something that triggers a Disney film or experience.

Spot, a 7-year-old caveboy, crouches on a rock. Behind him are pine trees.

D23: You’ve had many opportunities during your time at Pixar, from directing two feature films to voicing multiple characters. How does it feel to be in an environment where you’re often encouraged to take chances and step outside your comfort zone?
PS: I think it’s all luck. It’s driven by a very sincere love for the work and the people here. It’s the most cliché thing to say, but seeing another person make the most of their talent is like a sporting event to me. I’m very lucky for all the opportunities I had to jump into different departments. I see these artists like athletes, slamming, dunking, and shooting their three-pointers. In the art department, I would watch a production designer do their thing, and in the story department, I loved seeing a story sequence get pitched and everyone connecting to it. Or, when you’re in the voice room and you see someone be very vulnerable, you’re so grateful. Through the years, I consider myself super lucky to have had the chance to have jumped around. I owe a lot to the artists and filmmakers who put forward the idea of wanting to do the best for each film.

D23: How has being at Pixar enabled you to collaborate with other storytellers?
PS: So much of my job at Pixar has been about learning. When you’re done with a film, it’s not nomadic—like a lot of films in Hollywood are. With most films, you’re let go and you have to find another home. Most of the people at Pixar have worked as long as I have or even longer. And so, every film has been a building of experiences. You’re always sharing with each other. With the insights of the new generations here, there’s this amazing mix of people that you’re always learning from. It’s not just about a movie experience. It’s about lifeexperiences from all different folks working side by side. It becomes the reason why you get up. As hard as filmmaking can be, you think about the people you get to work with, and you wake up and think, “This is going to be fun!”

D23: How have Disney and Pixar supported your development as a storyteller?
PS: I was a sketch artist designing scuba gear for the dentist’s office [in Finding Nemo]. The director, Andrew Stanton, saw some of my work and said, “Hey, have you ever thought about doing story?” And I had not. I only wanted to be an animator. I was like, “Frank and Ollie [Disney Legends Frank Thomas and Ollie Johnston] are my gods. That’s the life for me... and hi-diddle-dee-dee!” This idea of going into story was new, but Andrew gave me a shot at it, even though I didn’t know what I was doing. I was literally making flip books of the scenes I was animating, and he threw it all out. He was like, “No, this is the one storyboard that tells everything. What are you giving me 100 proposals for?” I was crushed because I’d spent all night on those drawings, but at the same time, it was a big deal for me to understand and boil it down the essence of a scene. I learned a lot on The Incredibles right after that with Brad Bird, as well as on Up with Pete Docter. There was always a way to get better at X or to do it in a more focused way. Brad brought me to do voices. I had never done anything like that before. I never grew up thinking about that. But again, as I was pitching something, he saw something in me: “You could be a funny East Coast rat. The world of French cooking is effete, but the rats are blue collar.” He smelled my background, and he brought me in in that way. With performing, I didn’t know what I was doing, so he’d give advice in terms of where to be vulnerable, where to push it—and how to do that.

Ember, a glowing orange humanoid with a fiery head, and Wade, a watery blue humanoid wearing a yellow T-shirt, stand side-by-side overlooking Element City.

D23: What are some common things you hear from fans about your work at Pixar?
PS: The thing I always hear is, “You are just as chubby as Russell!” It’s usually funny stuff like that, which I love. But even if I’m just saying the title of some of the movies I’ve worked on, people smile and say, “Oh, you worked on that film?” They light up. It doesn’t matter what you did on it; you were part of it. When I go to Korea and see family members who know what Finding Nemo is and they have the same reaction as someone in Yonkers, New York, I’m just like, “Wow. That is really amazing.”

D23: How has Pixar helped you realize your dreams—and also dream new ones?
PS: There’s a lot that happens in 22 years in your personal life, and all of that gets mixed into your work day. If you have creative problem at Pixar, everyone starts pulling from their lives to solve it. It’s a handshake—a weird form of therapy, maybe. It’s sort of magic. So, when you’re drawing a goofy idea, Pixar gives you the room to come up with it, then dig into it and try to find out why you’re even going there in the first place.

Mickey Mouse and Minnie Mouse’s Most Magical Day at Disney100: The Exhibition

By Jocelyn Buhlman

Disney100: The Exhibition opened this month at The Franklin Institute in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, showcasing a dazzling display of over 250 treasures from across 100 years of Disney history. On February 15, D23 Gold Members got a sneak peek at the exhibition—but they weren’t the only ones who stopped by the museum. Our pals Mickey Mouse and Minnie Mouse joined in for the opening celebration, dressing extra-festive for their short visit in their dazzling platinum attire.

Mickey and Minnie hold hands in the “Where It All Began” gallery of Disney100: The Exhibition. They are both dressed in sparkling, platinum outfits with royal blue accents. To their left is a marquee for The Alice Comedies and a screen playing a clip from the Alice’s Wonderland short.

Our pals checked out the “Where It all Began” gallery, which celebrates the very start of Disney Animation, including the Alice Comedies and Oswald the Lucky Rabbit—along with a certain charming mouse duo!

Mickey and Minnie admire a display in Disney100: The Exhibition that showcases a large-screen depiction of Eyvind Earle’s artwork inside the Sleeping Beauty prop book. Mickey holds his hand out to the image, while Minnie applauds.

Over in the “Where Do the Stories Come From?” gallery, the platinum pair paused to admire the exhibit’s interactive display on the Sleeping Beauty prop book. While guests cannot open the actual, physical prop book, a special display lets them flip through pages of the book to view enlarged and animated versions of the pages—featuring beautiful art by Disney Legend Eyvind Earle.

Mickey and Minnie embrace while admiring the prop carousel horse from Mary Poppins. The horse, viewed in profile, is white with purple accents and white flowers.

The “Where Do the Stories Come From?” gallery highlights the inspiration sources for Disney films—from fairy tales to comic books! One of Disney’s most famous adaptations is Mary Poppins, and guests can admire several props from the film—including the original carousel horse that Mary herself rode in the “Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious” musical number.

In front of a red curtain, Minnie and Mickey lean in to admire Disney artwork showcased on desks lit by small, curved lamps. Minnie holds a hand to her face in the foreground, while behind her Mickey is focused on the art in front of him.

Music is an essential and beloved part of Disney magic, so naturally there’s a whole gallery dedicated to the Disney grooves that make our feet tap and our hearts sing! Mickey and Minnie couldn’t help but dance while visiting “The Magic of Sound and Music” gallery, but they also stopped to admire some of the featured art on display, including promotional art for Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs and concept art for Encanto.

Mickey and Minnie lean over an interactive table in the “Your Disney World” gallery. Behind them is an illuminated print of Peter Ellenshaw’s concept art for Disneyland. The wall behind them is designed to look like the building fronts of Main Street, U.S.A.

Some of our favorite places to experience Disney magic are Disney Parks, and Disney100: The Exhibition celebrates those happy places in the “Your Disney World” gallery. Besides showcasing Disney Parks items from the Walt Disney Archives, such as a Matterhorn Bobsleds attraction vehicle and a Red Demon Figure from Walt Disney World’s Mr. Toad’s Wild Ride, the gallery also features an interactive table full of fun facts about every Disney Park! (Seasoned D23 Gold Members may recognize the art featured on the table, too!)

It’s hard not to be overcome with emotion and nostalgia while exploring Disney100: The Exhibit, and even Mickey and Minnie needed a moment to pause in front of the stunning model of Walt Disney World’s Cinderella Castle.

Mickey and Minnie hug Disney Legend Bob Gurr.

Mickey and Minnie weren’t the only Disney icons to visit the exhibit for a sneak peek—Disney Legend Bob Gurr, the Walt Disney Imagineer behind more than 100 attraction designs (including the Matterhorn Bobsleds vehicle displayed in the gallery), stopped by to visit the exhibit himself. Mickey and Minnie were so excited to see their friend that they just had to give him a big hug!

Our pals only had a quick visit to Philadelphia to visit Disney100: The Exhibit, but you can see it for yourself at The Franklin Institute. If you’re a D23 Gold Member in Philadelphia, you can get discounted admission to the exhibit here

He may have started out as just a kid from Brooklyn, but Steve Rogers’ life turned out to be anything but ordinary. In fact, it’s the more-than-worthy focus of a musical production debuting on the Hyperion Stage at Disney California Adventure Park this summer.

Rogers: The Musical is a fictional Broadway production inspired by the first Captain America’s life, seen in a nearly five-minute segment on Disney+ series Hawkeye from Marvel Studios. Its arrival at Disneyland Resort will mark the first time it has appeared beyond the screen.

The one-act version of the show-stopping musical will be available for a limited time, with more details to be shared in the future. Disney Parks today shared a brief teaser of the upcoming production.

In Hawkeye, the musical premiered in 2024 at the Lunt-Fontanne Theatre in New York City. Two images of Courtney Quinn as a little girl. She appears to be no older than 6 in both photos. The first photo is of Quinn smiling really big at the camera and she is wearing a children’s Minnie Mouse costume dress. The second photo is of young Quinn in a Mad Tea Party attraction teacup vehicle. She is smiling at the camera in a pink shirt and jean overalls.

D23: You have always been a huge Disney fan. What gave you inspiration to combine your love for Disney with your passion for fashion?
Courtney Quinn (CQ): As a lifelong Disney fan, I think many of us dreamed of working with the company that means so much to us in some way. As a kid, I didn’t quite know it would look like it does now, but I am so grateful my online journey lead me here. I actually got my MBA at 21 and moved to New York with the hopes of working in fashion, but when I couldn’t get hired, I put @colormecourtney on my resume, removed my MBA, and eventually found myself working in product development at Coach. This was years ago, and I was living my “Hannah Montana life” (Courtney by day, Color Me Courtney by nights/weekends), while Coach was creating its first Disney collaboration. This caused me to dream (during my Color Me Courtney time) of what a collection I designed with Disney would look like. I was watching The Princess and the Frog around midnight while editing Halloween photos of myself dressed as Disney Princesses when I sketched out a Tiana inspired Minnie ear... and  the one you can shop in Disney Parks worldwide now is a near identical match to the dream that sparked so many years ago.

D23: How did your connection to Disney grow or change when The Princess and the Frog debuted in 2009?
CQ: I grew up loving characters like Jasmine and Gabriella (a Black, Deaf mermaid from The Little Mermaid TV series) and constantly watching Hercules and A Goofy Movie because of the nods to representation. There was a year growing up where I watched Hercules every night while doing my homework just to see The Muses, who meant so much to me. I don’t think I realized why at the time, but it was obviously because of the representation of seeing someone who looked like me and represented Black culture on the screen. Seeing a film centered around a Black Princess changed so much for so many people, including me. To feel represented and seen on the Disney Princess level helped further cement my bond with the brand. I still get chills knowing little girls now who look like me will never live in a world without a Black Disney princess.

A sample mood board created by Courtney Quinn as inspiration for the Princess Tiana Collection. The board features images of Tiana from The Princess and the Frog and images of Courtney in various outfits. In one image you can see Quinn’s fiancée, Paris, also dressed in colors reminiscent of Tiana’s green dress from the movie. There are color bubbles along the left side of the image, highlighting the yellow, green, and blue tones that can be found in The Princess and the Frog. Overall, it is a collage of inspiration for the collection featuring both Quinn’s own style and images directly from the animated film.

D23: What was the process of creating The Princess Tiana Collection for shopDisney? When did you start and what standout moments did you experience along the way?
CQ: The whole process was really a dream come true. We worked on the collection for years before I could even tell anyone or share anything about it, but I was secretly gathering information from my audience. I would ask about what they would love to see, product-wise, in Instagram captions and took note of their responses. I also thought of a lot of individual members of my Color Me community when designing pieces. One of the standout moments was when I got the call being asked to create the collection and some of the pitches I got to present. The original ask was to create a Disney-inspired collection, so we went through all the possibilities of what we would design before landing on the natural fit: Tiana.

D23: What parts of The Princess and the Frog inspired the designs in your collection? Do you have a favorite item in the collection?
CQ: It’s so hard to pick a favorite, but I had the idea of the ears and the varsity jacket for so long! The yellow dress is inspired specifically by the “Dig a Little Deeper” scene. I took a screen shot of the movie and the team was able to design a print around it that I absolutely love! A tulle skirt is something that’s always been signature to Color Me Courtney, just as showcasing the color palette of characters and looks is something I’ve done on my account. So, combining the two of those in one piece while capturing the essence of three of Tiana’s signature dresses was very special!

D23: What do you love about Tiana? In what ways do you relate to her character?
CQ: I love that everyone can relate to Tiana’s big dream and desire to make it come true, all while being inspired by her work ethic! Everyone has a dream, but not everyone is willing to go after it as fiercely as she does, so she serves as great inspiration in that way. I always encourage my community to shout their dreams, because if they can’t voice them out loud, how do they expect them to ever be made real?

Courtney is wearing a yellow dress, Tiana ears, and the Princess Tiana collection letterman jacket draped loosely around her shoulders. One hand is outstretched behind her, holding onto Paris, who is wearing the same letterman jacket and white pants.

D23: What was your experience like at D23 Expo, where you debuted The Princess Tiana Collection? How did it feel to finally have your collection live on shopDisney?
CQ: Wow, D23 Expo was so special to me! What a dream to be able to launch the collection there and meet so many Color Me Cuties and Color Me Minnies! I think one thing that was amazing about this collection is that I wasn’t the only one who got to design something, and I wasn’t the only woman of color. So often when I find myself in these spaces, I’m one of one, but being able to launch my fashion collection side-by-side with Ann Shen’s darling Aristocats line and Ashley Eckstein, who has changed the face of the Star Wars fandom, made it beyond what I could have dreamed. Because the dream isn’t for me to shine, it’s for everyone to feel seen and represented by these things we are creating for the community and sharing with others who want the same. It was truly something I’ll never forget and forever be grateful for.

D23: What does it feel like now to see Disney fans wearing pieces from your collection?
CQ: Oh, it is such a fun moment! I’ve been lucky enough to visit the parks quite a few times to see it all. When the collection first launched, most of the people buying at D23 Expo were members of my Color Me community, so I got to meet them for the first time and learn about why they loved certain pieces. But I’ve also gotten to just wander the parks and watch people who have no idea that I designed it find and fall in love with pieces, which is equally special as it shows the line stands on its own.

The last time I was at Walt Disney World, my friend pointed out someone wearing the ears and the skirt! We gushed about how cute she looked, and she noticed us doing so. It was a fun, full-circle moment, because the girl in the skirt, Mariah—who looked like she could be my model sister—shared why she decided to go after her dream of being a content creator. We’ve done a social media challenge called “Color Me Mermaid” on @colormemagic since the casting announcement of Halle Bailey in The Little Mermaid, and once upon a time I reposted one of Mariah’s looks. This gave her the confidence boost to create on her own! It’s just always further proof how much representation does matter, so seeing her in the look and hearing that story was a really fun moment for me.

D23: What is next for you? What would your ideal next collection center around and what takeaways did you get from the success of your first shopDisney collection?
CQ: Designing this collection has been my biggest dream come true, but I am dreamer—Disney made me that way—so, of course I have other dreams I would like to pursue! For starters, I want to do more on camera hosting at live events, and Disney has already made that dream real for me as I just got to announce and walk in the Disney Fairy Tale Weddings fashion show. But to quote Ariel, “I want more!” I’m hoping to get more into TV work of the unscripted nature! I’ve hosted a show before and starred in a commercial but want to continue working that way! And, of course, I hope I get the honor to design a Disney collection again because some of the other initial ideas we worked through are still so special to me and there are so many more I want to come to life!
