Quiz: How Well Do You Remember These Phineas and Ferb Songs?

By Jessica Benda

There’s 104 days of summer vacation—and 5,475 days since Phineas and Ferb officially premiered on Disney Channel. Whether you watched from Day One or caught up years later, Phineas, Ferb, and their eccentric pals and rivals brought summer adventures to any season, often set to an upbeat soundtrack that still plays in our heads. Though the show’s initial run concluded in 2015, a recently announced revival will bring 40 brand-new episodes. And, hopefully, another batch of catchy songs.

We know what we’re going to do today. In honor of the series’ 15th anniversary and newly announced seasons, let’s test your lyrical knowledge of these nostalgic songs. In the words of one Phineas and Ferb bop, “Let’s Take a Quiz.”

How Well Do You Remember These Phineas and Ferb Songs?
This could have gone better, but don’t worry, we won’t tell Candace. (As long as you rewatch Phineas and Ferb.)
You’re getting there! But it’s time to follow in Dr. Doofenshmirtz’s footsteps and start scheming (of ways to memorize all these songs).
Today is gonna be a great day, because you know almost all the Phineas and Ferb song lyrics!
Is there a platypus controlling you? You aced this Phineas and Ferb trivia. Perry is proud.

Everything to Watch During Black History Month 2023

By Andie Hagemann

All month long—and beyond—we’re celebrating Black culture across The Walt Disney Company. As part of that celebration, an amazing lineup of content is available through all Disney’s streaming services and airing on Disney’s linear networks. From all new episodes of hit series (including Abbott Elementary, The Proud Family: Louder and Prouder, Eureka!, and grown-ish) to can’t-miss movies, specials, and more, we’ve compiled the ultimate viewing guide.

In a scene from Abbott Elementary, actor Janelle James as Ava Coleman sits at a wooden desk in front of a dry erase white board. She wears a navy sweater with a tan collar, a silver choker, and a lanyard with an ID card. Elementary school students sit at desks facing James and wear light blue polo shirts.

ABC

Class is in session! Abbott Elementary is back with all-new, hilarious episodes this month, starting with a Valentine’s Day-themed episode airing Wednesday, February 8, at 9 p.m. ET/PT on ABC. The Abbott teachers are feeling the love and discussing their relationships and romantic plans for the holiday. Janine (Quinta Brunson) finds out one of her students has a crush on her and when turning to a colleague for advice, she inadvertently learns a secret about another teacher. Elsewhere, Ava (Janelle James) sits in on a Black History class taught by Jacob (Chris Perfetti) after receiving a complaint. New episodes of Abbott Elementary air on Wednesdays. Tyler James Williams, Lisa Ann Walter, William Stanford Davis, and Sheryl Lee Ralph also star in the series. Watch episodes on Hulu and on demand the day following their premieres.

The entire first season of The Wonder Years is available to stream on Hulu and Disney+. Inspired by the beloved award-winning 1980s and ’90s series of the same name, the reimagined original coming-of-age comedy narrated by Don Cheadle tells the story of the Williams family during the late 1960s, all through the point of view of imaginative 12-year-old Dean (Elisha “EJ” Williams). With the wisdom of his adult years, Dean’s hopeful and humorous recollections of his past spotlight the ups and downs of growing up in a Black middle-class family in Montgomery, Alabama, and the friendship, laughter and lessons along the way. The Wonder Years also stars Dulé Hill, Saycon Sengbloh, Laura Kariuki, Amari O’Neil, Julian Lerner, and Milan Ray.

Starring Niecy Nash-Betts, The Rookie: Feds debuts an all-new episode on Tuesday, February 14, at 9 p.m. ET/PT on ABC. Meanwhile, relationships are put to the test as Fortune considers her future with Carter, and Brendon pushes his limits with Antoinette. The series also stars James Lesure, Britt Robertson, Felix Solis, Kevin Zegers, Frankie Faison, Michelle Nuñez, and Devika Bhise. As the doctors plan a goodbye surprise, Nick (Scott Speedman) confronts her about their relationship status. ABC News

On Wednesday, February 1, at 10 p.m. ET/PT, ABC News’ Soul of a Nation returns with a one-hour special, Black in Vegas, exploring the history of Black entertainers in Las Vegas and celebrating those who are now ruling the historic strip. The primetime special details the countless household names who have made Las Vegas their home, including Usher, Mariah Carey, Janet Jackson, Boyz II Men, Lionel Richie, Smokey Robinson, Marsha Warfield, George Wallace, Eddie Griffin, and other top artists.

Black in Vegas looks at the timeline of historical events that paved the way for today’s generation, such as the 1971 federal consent decree that forced hotels and casinos to give Black workers the opportunity to be in front-of-the-house positions. Near the same time, entertainers like Frank Sinatra helped kick down barriers for Black performers in Sin City by demanding that his collaborators, such as band leader Quincy Jones and fellow performer Sammy Davis Jr., should stay at the same hotel as him. Today, Black entertainers are now headlining or performing in a variety of shows on the strip, including Cirque du Soleil’s Mad Apple, Magic Mike Live, RuPaul’s Drag Race, Chippendales, and their own residencies.

The special features exclusive interviews with acclaimed performers as well as never-before-seen video and an interview with Sammy Davis Jr. about performing in Las Vegas. The special also gives inside perspective from cultural commentators and workers in leadership positions at hotels and theaters on what it’s like to make a living on the strip and highlights some of the artists who will perform there this year. Soul of a Nation Presents: Black in Vegas will be available to stream the next day on Hulu.

Throughout February, Good Morning America will celebrate Black History Month with dedicated profiles, segments, and series. World News Tonight with David Muir will dedicate the month of February to Black History Month, celebrating those across the country who are making a difference in their communities within its America Strong and Made in America segments. This Week with George Stephanopoulos will celebrate Black History Month with interviews featuring prominent political Black leaders and dedicated segments focused on issues that directly impact the Black community. Every Way to Celebrate Disney100 at Disneyland Resort

By Jocelyn Buhlman

The dazzling 100th anniversary celebration of The Walt Disney Company kicked off at the Disneyland Resort this past Friday, January 27. A host of new experiences and entertainment debuted at The Happiest Place on Earth in honor of the milestone anniversary, letting guests take part in the celebration of Disney storytellers, creators, and fans around the world who, together, spark the magic and wonder of Disney.

“We are excited to bring this milestone celebration to life right here at The Happiest Place on Earth,” said Disneyland Resort President Ken Potrock. “For generations of families and fans around the world who have made Disney a part of their lives, this will be a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to enjoy all-new experiences with beloved Disney characters, our caring cast, and our amazing storytelling throughout the year.”

While other Disney Parks around the world will be joining in the celebration later this year, the party is starting at Walt Disney’s very first park—Disneyland! If you can’t wait to join the jamboree yourself, start planning your next trip down to Anaheim, because we’ve rounded up everything to eat, see, and do to celebrate 100 years of Disney!

Attractions

The front of the “El CapiTOON” Theatre, a yellow, red, and teal movie theater with a marquee featuring “Mickey & Minnie’s Runaway Railway” in red text.

Mickey &  Minnie’s Runaway Railway

The first-ever attraction exclusively dedicated to Mickey and Minnie Mouse made its east coast debut in 2019 at Disney’s Hollywood Studios—but now for Mickey’s Toontown at Disneyland Resort welcomes the wacky and wonderful attraction just in time for the 100th anniversary of The Walt Disney Company. Potrock told D23, “The Disneyland Resort is 68 years young, and yet, in all that time Mickey and Minnie have not had their own attraction. It sure seems like it’s about time, don’t you think?”

The attraction, which is now open for guests to enjoy, is a family friendly romp through a cartoon world featuring your favorite characters. Inside the El CapiTOON Theater in Mickey’s Toontown, guests board a train engineered by Goofy and embark on a zany, out-of-control adventure with surprising twists and turns. Besides cartoon goofs and gags, there’s details aplenty for fans to look for—both in the queue and the attraction itself! “Runaway Railway in Florida had the most ‘hidden Mickeys’ of any attraction, ever,” explains Jeff Shaver-Moscowitz, executive producer at Walt Disney Imagineering, “We may have topped that a little bit here.”

Disneyland’s version of Mickey & Minnie’s Runaway Railway boasts an incredible new queue celebrating decades of Mickey magic. Inside, you’ll be able to explore the Toontown Hysterical Society’s Mickey Through the Ears exhibit, featuring costumes, props, and hidden details from Mickey history. Some of our favorite pieces include the gigantic vine from Mickey and the Beanstalk (currently still growing through the roof of the El CapiTOON), Scrooge McDuck’s record keeping book from Mickey’s Christmas Carol (featuring the names of many cast and crew members from the film), and a collection of Disney Afternoon-inspired candies in the concession stand. Read more on the countless details and hidden gems in the queue and attraction itself here.

To experience Mickey & Minnie’s Runaway Railway, guests will be required to join the complimentary virtual queue, which is accessible only via the Disneyland app. Upon its grand opening, there will not be a standby line for this attraction. The virtual queue enrollment times will be twice daily, at 7 a.m. and 1 p.m. PT. More information on the virtual queue system is available at Disneyland.com. Guests may also get quicker entry to this attraction with the purchase of an individual Lightning Lane arrival window, subject to availability.

World of Color – ONE

Disney California Adventure lights up after dark with this beloved spectacular, which has showcased half a dozen different versions of the show since its debut. This year, guests will enjoy a new show celebrating the storytelling legacy started by Walt Disney a century ago. World of Color – ONE features an original song, “Start a Wave,” and features characters and moments from Walt Disney Animation Studios, Pixar Animation Studios, the Avengers and Star Wars. This is the first time that characters from across these worlds of Disney are all in the same production!

Wendy Ruth, show director at Disney Live Entertainment is wowed by the chance to bring so many different characters into one production, saying, “It is a beautiful show with an inspiring message that every single one of us can make a difference. We see it in characters like Remy, Moana, Mirabel, and Luke Skywalker, and in the end, we leave our guests with a call to action: You can be the one.”

Guests will be able to access viewing areas for World of Color – ONE through the virtual queue system available only via the Disneyland app. Distribution for the complimentary virtual queue will begin at noon, daily, subject to availability. Sleeping Beauty Castle at Disneyland Resort, featuring projections of several Disney films, including Beauty and the Beast, The Hunchback of Notre Dame, and Hercules. Behind the castle, fireworks shoot up into the sky and burst into a brocade shape

Wondrous Journeys at Disneyland Park

Lighting up the night doesn’t stop at Disney California Adventure! Over at Disneyland Park, an all-new spectacular, Wondrous Journey, features nods to every Walt Disney Animation Studios film over the last century, including the upcoming animated feature, Wish. Creative director for Walt Disney Animation Studios Roger Gould explains, “To curate the moments brought to life in Wondrous Journeys, we gathered a trust of Disney Animation artists and directors to discuss their favorite memories and which stories made them fall in love with animation.” Keep an eye out for your favorites as you watch the show!

The dazzling display is set to an all-new song, “It’s Wondrous,” along with 18 Disney songs. Each primary viewing area in the park is customized for a unique experience, using the park’s state-of-the-art projection effects to turn Main Street, U.S.A., Sleeping Beauty Castle, the façade of “it’s a small world” and the Rivers of America into an artist’s canvas. On select nights, Wondrous Journeys goes even bigger with the addition of sparkling fireworks.

Keep your eyes to the skies—not just for fireworks. For the first time ever, the lovable Baymax from Big Hero 6 soars across the skies of Disneyland Park during the spectacular.

The Disney Gallery Presents: Disney 100 Years of Wonder

This all-new exhibit inside the Main Street Opera House is inspired by Walt’s dream for Disneyland to be a place where his films come to life! The gallery pays tribute to Disney films that became Disneyland Resort attractions and park experiences that later inspired Disney films. Guests can check out art by original Disney animators alongside the concept art of the attractions that bring those stories to life in the parks. Displays include an original animator’s desk (courtesy of the Walt Disney Archives), a model of a multi-plane camera, and maquettes from classic Disneyland attractions like The Jungle Cruise, Haunted Mansion, and Pirates of the Caribbean.

Part of the Disney 100 Years of Wonder Gallery features Sleeping Beauty Castle’s transformation through the years, including its latest Disney100 decor which was partially inspired by Disney Legend John Hench. Hench first joined The Walt Disney Company as an animator in 1939 and later moved to Walt Disney Imagineering to design the original Tomorrowland attractions at Disneyland. Hench continued to develop and design Disney Parks all the way up to his death in 2004, contributing to the creation of EPCOT Center, Disney California Adventure, and, as Imagineer Kim Irvine explained, Sleeping Beauty Castle!

“He [Hench] would always talk about fountains. “Wouldn’t it be cool to have fountains in there?” So, for the anniversary, I sneakily said, “What if we put fountains in that moat?” So, we did. And they’re really, really fun! I hope you get a chance to see them at night because they go from pink to blue, back and forth every now and then, as though the fairies are changing them.”

Irvine counts Sleeping Beauty Castle’s Disney100 look as her 6th(!) castle repaint, each one stunning and uniquely tailored to Disneyland and The Walt Disney Company’s magical milestones. Be sure to stop by the Main Street Opera House to enjoy all the beautiful historical items on display.

The Watchful Eye Cast Shares Behind-the-Scenes Secrets

By Zach Johnson

Freeform’s The Watchful Eye is proof that looks can be deceiving.

The new psychological thriller from Ryan Seacrest Productions follows Elena (Mariel Molino), a young woman with a complicated past. Matthew (Warren Christie) hires Elena as live-in nanny for his son (Henry Joseph Samiri), drawing her into a new social stratosphere. At The Greybourne, a landmark Manhattan apartment building, Elena discovers everyone in the enigmatic building has deadly secrets and ulterior motives. What they don’t know, however, is that Elena has some shocking secrets of her own...

“There is a very empowered female at the center of this story who’s got an axe to grind,” Molino teases, praising the series’ “suspense, eeriness, and cinematic aspect.” Indeed, The Watchful Eye is designed as an intricate puzzle—one audiences will get closer to solving each week. “It’s not just a whodunit,” executive producer Emily Fox explains. “All the different pieces need to be assembled over the course of the series.”

In a scene from The Watchful Eye, Mariel Molino is in a dark room. She is holding a piece of paper and reading a message. She has long brown hair and is wearing a striped tank top, layered necklaces, multiple rings, and natural makeup.

The Greybourne is full of intrigue, from the complex politics among its wealthy inhabitants to its history which is riddled with mystery and tragedy. “There’s just something really sort of compelling about the idea of an apartment building and the fact that it contains so many stories and all these people are so close to one another,” Fox says. “There’s privacy, and yet, there’s this community inside of the walls of the building.”

“Of course, the building is gorgeous,” Fox continues. “It’s familiar, but it’s our version of a castle. And the palace intrigue is what’s so fun to play with... Every apartment building has its own personality and its own literal and figurative secret passageways. I think it’ll be fun for everybody to get to see how The Greybourne lives and breathes.”

Rounding out the cast of The Watchful Eye are Kelly Bishop as Mrs. Ivey, a lifelong resident of The Greybourne who is accustomed to getting her way; Amy Acker as Tory, a woman who instantly dislikes her brother-in-law’s new nanny; Jon Ecker as Scott, Elena’s cunning boyfriend who helped arrange for her to get a job at The Greybourne; Lex Lumpkin as Elliott, a precocious teenager who lives in The Greybourne and strikes up an instant friendship with Elena; and Aliyah Royale as Ginny, who works alongside Elena as a nanny and is one of the few people who can get past her tough outer shell.

In a scene from The Watchful Eye, actor Mariel Molino sits on a green sofa. She is wearing a white shirt, layered necklaces, a red cardigan, black capri pants, and black shoes. Her hands are clasped in her lap, and her brown leather bag is by her side. Amy Acker is seated on the opposite side of the couch. The blond actress is wearing a long-sleeved white shirt with ruffle details and coral pants. Her hands are clasped and placed on a red clipboard on her lap, and she is looking at Molina. Actor Warren Christie sits opposite the two women on a green chair. His back is to the camera, and he is wearing blue jeans and a black shirt. The luxury apartment is decorated with a geometric coffee table, a painting on the walls, two lamps, and more.

So... who knows Elena best? That depends on who’s asking. “I think Tory sees her as a threat,” Acker says. “She wants to have a stronghold on the family, on the apartment building, on everything. Elena doesn’t always play by Tory’s rules and isn’t afraid to stand up to her, and so it causes a little bit of stress and anxiety in Tory’s realm. She’s probably taking a few more meds because Elena is in the building!” And while Elena and Ginny have an instant “connection” and begin to develop “a beautiful friendship,” Royale cautions: “We all have friendships that we have to reevaluate at some point.”

According to Christie, The Watchful Eye wouldn’t work without Molino’s performance. “She’s the eyes of the audience, right? She’s bringing everyone into this world of the uber-rich, and then she has to toe the line between the haves and have nots,” he says. “She’s the one who is bringing the audience along, and she does this incredibly beautiful job with it to make sure they see the divide between these different people.”

The Watchful Eye premieres Monday, January 30, with two episodes at 9 p.m. ET/PT before moving to its regular timeslot on Mondays at 10 p.m. ET/PT, only on Freeform.

Nikole Hannah-Jones Talks Turning The 1619 Project into a Hulu Docuseries

By Zach Johnson

In 2019, to commemorate the 400th anniversary of the beginning of slavery in the United States, Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Nikole Hannah-Jones launched The 1619 Project in the pages of The New York Times Magazine. The ongoing initiative aims to reframe the country’s history by placing the consequences of slavery and the contributions of Black Americans at the center of the national narrative. The 1619 Project since expanded into a limited docuseries, now streaming on Hulu.

“This is the story of America,” Hannah-Jones says. “That’s our argument: You can’t understand the story of America without understanding the story of slavery and Black Americans. It’s really important, when we set the tone for what this documentary series is, that it’s not a documentary series about Black people. It’s a documentary series about America. All of us Americans should come away with a better understanding of the country we live in.”

Hosted by Hannah-Jones, the docuseries has been in the works for several years. “We went with Disney, Onyx Collective, and Hulu for a number of reasons,” Hannah-Jones says, noting that CEO Bob Iger “had a strong belief in the project, so we were going to get the resources that we needed to produce the work that we wanted to produce.”

Each week through Thursday, February 9, a pair of episodes—”Democracy” and “Race,” “Music” and “Capitalism,” and “Fear” and “Justice”—will debut exclusively on Hulu. Adapted from essays in the recently published book, The 1619 Project: A New Origin Story, each episode will examine how the legacy of slavery shapes different aspects of contemporary American life. “One of the first things Nikole said to me was that this project is going to be ‘unflinching,’” executive producer and director Rogers Ross Williams says. “We really held to that [notion]. That was always in our head—that we were going to be ‘unflinching.’ We were not going to water down this project in any way. It was going to tell the complete truth, whether it’s uncomfortable or not.”

According to Williams, who directed the first and last episodes, unpacking The 1619 Project was revelatory. “Growing up, I didn’t really know the story of America. I was taught something totally different,” he admits. “When I first read The 1619 Project, it was like my brain exploded. It was an incredible, eye-opening experience, and I hope that everyone [who watches this] has the experience I did when I first experienced it.”

Similar to Williams, executive producer and showrunner Shoshana Guy says that she felt “so seen” listening to Hannah-Jones’ The 1619 Project podcast and reading her work in The New York Times Magazine. In fact, when Guy was approached about showrunning the docuseries, she recalls, “I was like, ‘This is mine. I’m meant to do this.’”

As it turns out, Guy and Hannah-Jones share a surprising connection. “Nikole and I are connected through Waterloo, Iowa, which is kind of strange, in a way, because it’s a small community,” Guy shares. “My great-grandparents are buried there. My father was born there. My grandmother was born there. It just felt ancestral in nature that I was connected to her and to the place that she was from.” Hannah-Jones adds, “It may not need to be said, but it’s not often that you meet other Black people who have roots in Waterloo, Iowa! We definitely felt like it was an inspired moment.”

Turning The 1619 Project into a Hulu Original with Guy and Williams “has been the most amazing experience,” Hannah-Jones continues. “It’s a frightening thing to take your work and put it in the hands of people who know a medium that you don’t know and that you haven’t worked in before. But the trust and the respect we had on this team is something I will never forget.” Ultimately, Hannah-Jones says, “It was a powerful experience to try to tell these stories in a different way—and a challenging one.”
