The One and Only Ivan to Premiere Exclusively on Disney+

By Zach Johnson

The Walt Disney Studios announced today that the heartwarming adventure The One and Only Ivan, an adaptation of the bestselling, award-winning book about one very special gorilla, directed by Thea Sharrock, will premiere exclusively on Disney+ on August 21, 2020.

The film, which was previously scheduled to be released theatrically by The Walt Disney Studios, is an unforgettable tale about the beauty of friendship, the power of visualization, and the significance of the place one calls home. The One and Only Ivan, which comes to the screen in an impressive hybrid of live-action and CGI, is based on Katherine Applegate’s book, which won numerous awards upon its publication in 2013, including the Newbery Medal. Ivan is a 400-pound silverback gorilla who shares a communal habitat in a suburban shopping mall with Stella the elephant and Bob the dog. He has few memories of the jungle where he was captured, but when a baby elephant named Ruby arrives, it touches something deep within him. Ruby is recently separated from her family in the wild, which causes him to question his life, where he comes from, and where he ultimately wants to be.

“The world has changed in a heartbeat. People all over the globe have shared important, life- changing experiences in ways we have not seen for a century,” said Sharrock. “In response to this, I am so happy that we can share Katherine Applegate’s delightful and original story, The One and Only Ivan, with the world this August on Disney+, bringing some joy through this unique movie of true friendship, inspired by a true story.”

The film features the voices of Sam Rockwell as Ivan the gorilla; Angelina Jolie as Stella the elephant; Danny DeVito as Bob the dog; Helen Mirren as Snickers the poodle; Chaka Khan as Henrietta the chicken; Mike White as Frankie the seal; Brooklynn Prince as Ruby the baby elephant; Ron Funches as Murphy the rabbit; Phillipa Soo as Thelma the parrot; and stars Ramón Rodríguez, Ariana Greenblatt, and Bryan Cranston. Mike White wrote the screenplay based on Applegate’s novel. The late Allison Shearmur, Jolie, and Brigham Taylor are producers, with Sue Baden-Powell and Sharrock serving as executive producers.

Matt James to Star in the 25th Season of ABC’s The Bachelor

By Zach Johnson

After meeting Matt James as a prospective suitor for Clare Crawley’s upcoming season of ABC’s The Bachelorette, thousands of fans swooned over the would-be cast member. He is the total package, with strong family values and a great career—and, over the past few months, he has used his growing platform for good. Today, James announced on Good Morning America that he will take on the role as the lead of his own love story when he stars in the momentous 25th season of ABC’s hit romance reality series The Bachelor.

While much of Bachelor Nation has fallen in love with him already, many will meet the 28-year-old real estate broker, entrepreneur, and community organization founder on his journey to find love for the first time. The North Carolina native went to Wake Forest University, where he majored in economics and played wide receiver for the football team. He went on to play professional football, before moving to New York City, where he now resides. His love of food and passion for giving back led to his creation of an organization that is designed to find creative ways to engage kids from underserved communities in New York City, encouraging physical and mental wellness, while also giving them opportunities for new experiences throughout the city.

“Matt has been on our radar since February, when producers first approached him to join Bachelor Nation, as part of Clare’s season,” said Karey Burke, president, ABC Entertainment. “When filming couldn’t move forward as planned, we were given the benefit of time to get to know Matt and all agreed he would make a perfect Bachelor. We know we have a responsibility to make sure the love stories we’re seeing onscreen are representative of the world we live in, and we are proudly in service to our audience. This is just the beginning, and we will continue to take action with regard to diversity issues on this franchise. We feel so privileged to have Matt as our first Black Bachelor and we cannot wait to embark on this journey with him.”

Season 25 of The Bachelor is scheduled to premiere in 2021. Hosted by Chris Harrison, The Bachelor is a production of Next Entertainment in association with Warner Horizon Unscripted Television. Mike Fleiss, Martin Hilton, Nicole Woods, Bennett Graebner, Peter Gust, Tim Warner, Louis Caric, and Peter Geist are the executive producers.

Meet the Characters of Artemis Fowl

By the D23 Team

We’re only days away from Artemis Fowl’s debut on Disney+, but before we dive into a world of magic, mysteries, and technological wonders, let’s meet the characters setting out on this adventure inspired by Eoin Colfer’s beloved novel:

artemis fowl

Artemis Fowl II
Artemis Fowl II is something of a devil-may-care genius descended from a long line of criminal masterminds—he’s also 12 years old! Director Kenneth Branagh explains, “Artemis has to have so many qualities. He needs to be funny. He needs to be smart. He needs to be physically adroit. He’s very adventurous. There’s going to be a lot of action and stunt work in the picture, and he needed to have an emotional quality as well.”

He adds, “Artemis Fowl is a character who loves life and is fascinated by it, so we’re driven through the movie by Artemis’ intelligence, by his curiosity, by his sense of humor, and by his fearlessness.”

artemis fowl

Holly Short
Before crossing paths with Artemis, Holly short was simply a member of the fairy special forces—that is to say, she’s part of LEPrecon—protectors of the secretive, reclusive Lower Elements, where otherworldly creatures live.

To portray the 84-year-old fairy, the filmmakers found the perfect fit in Lara McDonnell. Says Branagh, “Lara has a warmth and innate emotional intelligence, which means that, with all of the wonderful passion that she brings to Holly Short, she also has humor and she has kindness. Lara felt like she had very complementary qualities to Ferdia. Their relationship is absolutely the center of the film.”

Author Eoin Colfer says, “Artemis and Holly’s meeting could not be any more acrimonious. I think he very quickly realizes, though he holds it inside for quite a while, that although a fairy, she is much more human than he expected. Whereas Artemis is cold and precise, she is very emotional. He needs Holly, because at a certain point in the story, Holly has to step in and become his protector.”

artemis fowl

Mulch Diggums
On playing Mulch Diggums, a criminal with a penchant for breaking and entering (who also happens to be an oversized Dwarf), Josh Gad (Frozen, Frozen II, Beauty and the Beast) remembers, “I got a call from Ken saying that he would love to offer me the role of Mulch Diggums. The truth is I hadn’t read the books, and so I immediately dived in and realized what an incredible world this was, and more specifically, what an amazing character Mulch was.”

“He is a loner, out for himself in many ways,” says Gad. “He is a thief, a kleptomaniac. He’s also an unbelievable miner by virtue of his background.”

Adds Branagh, “Mulch is a rogue, but he’s a lovable rogue, and in Josh Gad’s hands he’s about as lovable as you can get. Josh brings a very touching vulnerability and insecurity to the role. He wants to be smaller, what he considers a normal dwarf size. Because he’s a giant dwarf, people think that he’s rather separate, so there’s a certain loneliness there,” says Branagh.

artemis fowl

Dom Bulter
To play Artemis’ trusted ally and confidant, Domovoi “Dom” Butler, Branagh turned to someone he’d worked with numerous times in the theatre, and most recently in his film adaptation of Cinderella, British actor Nonso Anozie.

Anozie describes his character’s relationship with Artemis as “many-faceted. He’s a father figure, he’s his protector, he’s a teacher. He’ll never replace his father, but I feel like he definitely plays that role at times.”

artemis fowl

Juliet Bulter
“Juliet has that spark,” describes Branagh of Juliet Butler, Dom’s niece and eager security guard in training. “That kind of provocative feisty quality that stands up to this great big uncle of hers, and certainly to Artemis Fowl.”

Portraying Dom’s niece is Tamara Smart, who Branagh views as a perfect fit for the role: “Tamara is such an infectiously enthusiastic performer. She had read the books and was particularly keen to tackle Juliet’s physicality,” says Branagh.

artemis fowl

Artemis Fowl I
Colin Farrell took on the the role of Artemis’ kidnapped father due to his interest in exploring the relationship between father and son.

Farrell says, “I thought the script was beautiful and moving. I play this patriarch, who is introducing his son to this world of magic and wonder under the guise of it being artifice, when in fact every story that he’s sharing has really taken place. My job is to try and guide Artemis, direct him, expose him through stories that I’ve shared with him all our lives of fairies and leprechauns and trolls and goblins and the history of Ireland and worlds that exist beyond what the human eye can see. He thinks that these are all just fantastical stories based in mythology, but it’s mythology that we find out actually exists.”

Until his character is kidnapped, he has been protective of his son. “He doesn’t want to share with him the full depth and the full responsibility and the danger and the weight of what it is to be a Fowl. He wants to keep his son a boy. He wants him to have a life. He wants him to have friends. Nobody in the lineage of Fowls has ever had any kind of normalcy in their lives at all, and he wishes that for his boy,” adds Farrell.

artemis fowl

Commander Root
Even in the fairy world of the Lower Elements, you have to deal with tough bosses. Playing Holly Short’s boss, Commander Root, is longtime Branagh collaborator and Academy Award® winner Dame Judi Dench. While Commander Root, the chief of the fairy reconnaissance forces, was a male fairy in Colfer’s book, Branagh felt more than comfortable with someone as revered as Dench taking on the role. “If you’re surprised, you can’t imagine how surprised I am,” says Dench.

Branagh says, “Judi brings her energy to bear upon this Napoleonesque, Irish curmudgeon. She looks like she’ll take no prisoners, and she found this swaggering walk and this Churchillian brogue in her voice that really gives you the sense of an absolute commander. It goes hand-in-hand with a very compassionate, intelligent, all-seeing character that is full of secrets as well. She brings such subtlety and fun and energy to the piece.”

14 Disney Movies Based on Our Favorite Books

By Jocelyn Buhlman

Reading a good book is a thrilling adventure that can sometimes go by too quickly. Have you ever finished a really good book and wished you could live in the world of the story for longer? Well, some of our favorite Disney films give you the chance to do just that! Film adaptations of beloved books let us explore the worlds of our favorite stories in new and exciting ways. We’ve rounded up some of our favorite live action films based on some beloved books.

treasure island

1. Treasure Island (1950)
Arr, if ye be seekin’ adaptations of Robert Louis Stevenson’s classic adventure novel, there be films aplenty. Perhaps you like your Treasure Island to be the Muppet variety [LINK: https://d23.com/muppet-treasure-island-did-you-know/]—or perhaps you’d rather see a sci-fi twist on the story like Treasure Planet [LINK: https://d23.com/d23-celebrates-15-years-treasure-planet-directors-ron-clements-john-musker/]. However, the original 1950 adaptation of Treasure Island made waves as the first-ever live action Disney film!

freaky friday

2. Freaky Friday (1976)
This classic tale of mother-daughter switcharoo has been adapted many times [link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UBIf5ishtcY], but the original 1976 version was the first time Disney adapted Mary Rogers’ novel of the same name. Its premise is one any kid or parent can relate to—sometimes when we just can’t understand each other, it’s best to walk a mile in the others’ shoes. Of course, this film takes that literally when high schooler Annabell Andrews (Jodie Foster) and housewife Ellen Andrews (Barbara Harris) switch lives one fateful Friday and wacky hijinks ensue—along with heartfelt understanding… and waterskiing.

the princess bride

3. The Princess Bride (1987)
An article about film adaptations of books that doesn’t mention The Princess Bride? Inconceivable! The beloved adaption of William Goldman’s equally endearing novel of the same name has won the hearts of film lovers and fans of the book alike with its cheeky twist on the classic fairy tale, iconic and instantly-quotable dialogue, and beloved characters.

princess diaries

4. The Princess Diaries (2001)
Every day is dramatic enough as it is when you’re a high schooler, but what do you do when you have to add “discovering you’re the princess Genovia” into the already stressful mix? You don’t have to wonder—lucky for you, Mia Thermopolis kept a diary! Her life as a new princess was explored in Meg Cabot’s The Princess Diaries book series—and immortalized as a go-to sleepover movie starring Anne Hathaway and Julie Andrews. Mia’s story of going from awkward high schooler to… still awkward princess will inspire anyone who feels like they don’t quite fit in.

tuck everlasting

5. Tuck Everlasting (2002)
Natalie Babbit’s book about a family that discovers the secret to immortality got the big-screen treatment in 2002. We follow the journey of Winnie Foster (Alexis Bledel) as she tries to break free from her domineering mother and protect the secret of the Tuck family—especially her beloved Jesse Tuck. But she has a serious choice ahead of her: return to her normal life, or stay with the everlasting Tuck family.

holes

6. Holes (2003)
If you dug Louis Sanchar’s award-winning novel about a boy sent to a strange camp where he must dig holes every day, you will equally love the film adaptation of Holes. Starring Shia LaBeouf as Stanley Yelnats, the film chronicles his time digging holes at Camp Greenlake—but the camp’s secret could finally help Stanley break his family’s curse of bad luck.

chronicles of narnia

7. The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, The Witch, and the Wardrobe (2005)
Based on the first-written book in C.S. Lewis’ popular The Chronicles of Narnia series, the film follows the adventures of the Pensivie siblings as they discover a mysterious land inside their wardrobe after a game of hide-and-seek. What starts as the sibling’s fun adventure filled with talking animals and strange environments soon becomes an epic battle to save the land of Narnia from the evil White Witch—and fulfill their destinies.

bridge to terabithia

8. Bridge to Terabithia (2007)
Ok, ok, grab your tissues, we’ll wait. Both the original book by Katherine Paterson and the film adaptation are well-known for the story’s heartbreakingly sad ending—but it also has an inspiring message in the friendship of Jess Aarons (Josh Hutcherson) and Leslie Burke (AnnaSophia Robb) as they explore their imaginations and find the magic in everyday life.

percy jackson

9. Percy Jackson and the Olympians: The Lightning Thief (2010)
While fans of Rick Riordian’s stories inspired by Greek mythology recently rejoiced over the news that the books are getting a brand-new series on Disney+, you can watch the 2010 film adaptation of his first Percy Jackson book, The Lightning Thief, right now on Disney+. See the adventures of Percy, Annabeth, Grover, and more of our favorite residents of Camp Halfblood come to life. Camp Halfblood is, of course, the summer camp for children of the Greek gods—including Percy Jackson, the son of Poseidon. With this newfound knowledge comes newfound powers—which he learns to use on his quest to save his mother from Hades, the god of the underworld.

alexander

10. Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day (2014)
We could fill up a whole other article about Disney film’s based on children’s stories (in fact, we have!), but the film adaption of Judith Viorst’s classic picture book stands out for its charming expansion upon the original story’s simple premise of a single day that just keeps getting worse—not just for poor Alexander, but for his whole, usually upbeat, family.

a wrinkle in time

11. A Wrinkle in Time (2018)
What would you do if you were the only normal person in a family of brilliant scientists—but also the only one who could save them all?  Meg Murry finds herself “tessering” through space and time to save her father, with a little help from mysterious celestial beings—Mrs. Which, Mrs. Whatsit, and Mrs. Who. Based on the Newberry award-winning book by Mageline L’Engle, A Wrinkle in Time teaches us how to be warriors—even if not all of us are on cosmic quests like Meg.

artemis fowl

12. Artemis Fowl (2020)
Fans have been eagerly waiting for an adaptation of the book that follows boy genius Artemis Fowl as he delves into the world of magic and fairies—and their wait will soon be over! The film adaptation of Eoin Colfer’s first book in his fantastical Artemis Fowl series is now on Disney+. Tune in and discover Artemis’ journey to rescue his father—along the way, he’ll make some unusual allies and discover a secret magic world like you’ve never seen before.

upside-down magic

13. Upside-Down Magic (2020)
This enchanting Disney Channel Original Movie (DCOM) conjures up a story of two magically inclined friends, Elinor “Nory” Boxwood Horace and Reina Carvajal, who enroll in the esteemed Sage Academy for Magical Studies to train their skills. Sage Academy is split into five types of magic: Flyers, Fuzzies, Fluxers, Flares, and Flickers. Reina’s flashy powers sort her as a Flicker—but Nory’s mixed-up shapeshifter abilities place her in a sixth category: Upside-Down Magic. Based on the book series by Sarah Mlynowski, the DCOM follows Nory’s adventures as she learns to master her magic and prove she won’t give in to the mysterious ways of “shadow magic.”

the one and only ivan

14. The One and Only Ivan (2020)
Based on the children’s novel by Katherine Applegate, The One and Only Ivan tells the beloved story of Ivan, a gorilla, who lives at a shopping mall along with Stella the elephant, Bob the dog, and various other animals. Ivan has no recollection of his life before the mall—but when a baby elephant named Ruby arrives, he empathizes with her journey and begins to question the life he knows. Applegate’s Newbery Medal-winning story will be brought to life with an impressive hybrid of CGI and live-action when it debuts on Disney+ on August 21.

Disney Parks, Experiences and Products Proposes Plans for the Disneyland Resort to Begin a Phased Reopening July 9, with Proposed Reopening of the Theme Parks July 17

By Disney Parks, Experiences and Products

Disney Parks, Experiences and Products today announced proposed plans for a phased reopening of the Disneyland Resort. Pending state and local government approvals, Disney’s Grand Californian Hotel & Spa and Disney’s Paradise Pier Hotel plans to reopen on July 23, and Disneyland park and Disney California Adventure park will plan to reopen on July 17. Additionally, Downtown Disney District will begin reopening on July 9.

Because theme park capacity will be significantly limited to comply with governmental requirements and promote physical distancing, the Disneyland Resort will manage attendance through a new theme park reservation system that will require all guests, including Annual Passholders, to obtain a reservation for park entry in advance. Theme park reservations will be subject to availability. More details about this new reservation system will be available soon. At this time, there will also be a temporary pause on new ticket sales and Annual Passport sales and renewals. Additional details will be available soon. Please check Disneyland.com for the most current information.

Once approved, the Disneyland Resort will reopen with enhanced health and safety measures. In addition, a Guest Experience Team will be available throughout the parks and Downtown Disney District to assist guests with questions regarding these new policies.

“As one of the first major theme parks to close our operations and the last to reopen, we have been deliberate about keeping the health and safety of our Cast, Guests and local communities top of mind,” said Disney Parks, Experiences and Products chairman Josh D’Amaro. “And as we look forward to bringing our cast members back to work, and welcoming you back as cherished guests—we know it will take all of us working together responsibly to recapture the magic.”

Certain experiences that draw large group gatherings—such as parades and nighttime spectaculars—will return at a later date. While character meet and greets will be temporarily unavailable, characters will be in the parks in new ways to entertain and delight guests.

Pending governmental approval, Disney’s Grand Californian Hotel & Spa, Disney’s Paradise Pier Hotel and Disney Vacation Club Villas at Disney’s Grand Californian Hotel & Spa are planned to reopen to guests and members starting on July 23. Plans to support physical distancing as well as increased cleaning measures, along with a number of other health and safety protocols, will be implemented as part of the phased reopening of the hotels and the Vacation Club.

“We’re fortunate to be guided by a talented team of professionals who’ve helped us implement a variety of new health and safety measures reflecting the guidance of local health and government authorities,” said D’Amaro. “These are designed with both the Cast and Guests in mind for the unique environments of each of our parks, resorts and stores.”

Downtown Disney District will begin reopening on July 9 in line with the state’s reopening guidelines, with its unique variety of shopping and dining experiences, including the flagship World of Disney store. With the health of guests and Disney cast members at the forefront of planning, several operational changes will be implemented based on guidance from health authorities to promote physical distancing and cleanliness throughout the Downtown Disney District.

Additional information on enhanced health and safety measures and operational changes for reopening locations will be shared soon. These policies are under continuous review and are subject to change as the Disneyland Resort monitors conditions and receives guidance from health and government authorities.
