Set Sail for Fun with New Ways for Adults to Relax, Recharge, and Reconnect on the Disney Wish

By the D23 Team

The newest member of the Disney Cruise Line fleet is about to bring even more magic to the high seas! Just announced today, Disney Wish guests ages 18 and older will have new ways to pamper and play, sip and swim, and escape and indulge starting summer 2022. Our wishes for high-seas fun were already coming true with the previously announced Star Wars-themed lounge and fine dining experiences inspired by Beauty and the Beast, and now our vacation plans are getting even dreamier with the debut a variety of brand-new venues for adults, including the fleet’s first outdoor spa retreat, unique salon and barbershop experiences, and a collection of upscale bars and lounges sure to keep any itinerary jam-packed with relaxation and fun.

“With the Disney Wish, we wanted to design an experience that allows our grown-up guests to relax, recharge, and reconnect in unique ways that only Disney Cruise Line can create,” said Laura Cabo, portfolio creative executive, Walt Disney Imagineering. “Not only did we infuse more storytelling and enchantment into the adult-exclusive venues, but we added more variety and made them more accessible than ever before. This ship has truly been designed with adults’ vacation needs in mind, and I know our guests are going to return home feeling refreshed after their Disney Wish vacation.”

Want more details on all the new fun? Your wish is our command:

The Fleet’s First-Ever Outdoor Spa Retreat
Nothing is more relaxing than a cool ocean breeze—until now! For the first time aboard a Disney ship, guests can relax at Senses Spa, a dedicated outdoor relaxation space featuring whirlpool spas, plush loungers, and yoga sessions. Plus, anyone looking for some private rest and relaxation can enjoy the Senses Spa’s private treatment rooms or lavish spa villas for couples, with full menus of massage, facial, and acupuncture therapies, along with a menu of specialized treatments that are customized to their needs, such as pain management and sleep improvement. Adjacent to the spa, the reimagined Senses Fitness will offer state-of-the-art exercise and wellness facilities, including a main room with exercise equipment, a dedicated cycle studio, and an aerobics room.

This open-air oasis is a brand-new extension to Disney Cruise Line’s signature Rainforest experience, which has been reimagined for the Disney Wish to provide even more ways to relax and rejuvenate. The Rainforest will introduce the fleet’s first ice lounge, allowing guests to combine thermal therapies, which promotes both physical wellness and tranquility. It will also include guest-favorite elements like heated ergonomic loungers; sensory spa showers; and sauna, steam, and dry chambers.

Salon and Barbery
Let your hair down—and have it cut and styled in two brand-new salon experiences new to the Disney Cruise Line fleet. The Untangled Salon, inspired by Rapunzel, is a light and airy environment perfect for pampering. The chic, high-end salon is enchantingly designed to reflect the spirit of Tangled, adorned in shapes of purple and gold and decorated with floating light fixtures. As it takes inspiration from our favorite long-tressed, artistic princess, guests can also enjoy custom cut-metal privacy screens depicting Rapunzel’s own paintings! One side of the space will even gleam and glow with the golden light of a signature chandelier that evokes the iconic flower that gave her hair its magical qualities. In addition to haircuts and styling, the menu of services at Untangled Salon will include manicures, pedicures, teeth whitening, and skin treatments.

In the mood for something less royal and more… villainous? Stop by Hook’s Barbery for a unique twist on a traditional European men’s salon. Offering cuts, shaves, and nail and skin care, the barbery is decked out in dark woods, handsome leather chairs, and ornate golden mirrors, and more narrative details inspired by its namesake, Captain Hook. Keep an eye out for an inlaid wooden map of Never Land, a hidden pocket watch and—of course—a hook, plus so many more details straight from Never Land. One more wonderful thought: A trio of seemingly nondescript lanterns will occasionally come to life with lighting and audio effects to signify Tinker Bell jumping from one fixture to another.

No establishment inspired by the pirate life is complete without some secrets: Hook’s Barbery not only provides salon and barber services, but it will also feature a hidden bar. This trove of pre-Prohibition bourbons, vintage whisky and port, aged rum, and premium spirits will be the ideal location for low-key hangouts, romantic date nights, hosted tastings and special evening events.

Enchanting Nightlife
Every adult deserves the chance to have an enchanting evening or a magical night out, and the Disney Wish will offer a collection of relaxed and refined bars and lounges reserved exclusively for adults each evening. For the first time, these venues will be spread out among the ship’s other core gathering places for a more flexible, free-flow experience that will allow guests—particularly parents—the opportunity to craft their own adventures throughout their cruise. Also new is the prevalence of storytelling in these spaces, providing a variety of ways for adults to experience some of their favorite Disney stories in sophisticated ways designed especially for them. These experiences include:

  • Keg & Compass: Keg & Compass is a pub that celebrates the adventure and romance of the sea, designed in the rustic architectural style of a late 1800s Norwegian sailor’s map room. Drawing inspiration from the rich folklore of Norse seafaring, period-style oil paintings will depict tales of the deep and intricate carvings of tentacles, barnacles, compasses, and more will accentuate porthole frames.
    • Spanning the entire ceiling will be a grand, fantastical map in old maritime style that features, among other references to ocean lore, a homage to Disney characters and stories related to the sea. In addition to such characters as Ursula and Moana (appearing in the geographically accurate locations of their stories), the map will call out important locales related to The Walt Disney Company and, specifically, the design and construction of the Disney Wish. This casual setting is perfect for guests to kick back and watch live sports, news, and major broadcast events while sampling a specialized selection of beers, including three custom craft brews available exclusively aboard the Disney Wish, along with an assortment of liquors, wines, and cocktails.
  • Nightingale’s: Nightingale’s is a refined piano bar inspired by Cinderella’s lyrical rendition of “Sing Sweet Nightingale” in the 1950 film, offering an extensive menu of fine wines, bubblies, and hand-crafted cocktails. Classically modern with a soft metallic palette, the predominant design feature will be a glittering chandelier perched above the piano—a swirl of pearlescent bubbles and music notes displaying the titular song’s melody meticulously crafted out of shimmering rose gold. This vibrant lounge will be a thematic extension of the fairy tale-inspired Grand Hall from which it stems, with large doors that allow the twinkling tunes to spill out across the atrium, inviting passersby to stop and stay for a while.
  • The Bayou: Guests looking for New Orleans-inspired good time can go down to The Bayou, an informal lounge themed to The Princess and the Frog. Flourishing with magnolia blossoms, lily pads, and a canopy of twinkling fireflies overhead, this space will evoke the magical marsh where Tiana and Naveen take refuge in the film. A bronze statue of each character will be prominently displayed, and two gazebos inspired by the city’s iconic wrought iron metalwork structures will provide intimate seating for small groups on either side of the bar.

This centrally located venue will offer creative cocktails, specialty coffees, and signature beignets in a lively, social atmosphere complete with live entertainment and musical performances.

More Fun for Adults
As previously announced, the Disney Wish will also feature a first-of-its-kind lounge in a galaxy far, far away; a trio of premium culinary experiences inspired by a tale as old as time; and a dedicated pool district on the upper decks exclusively for guests ages 18 and older.

  • Star Wars: Hyperspace Lounge: For the first time on a Disney ship, guests will embark on a space-jumping tour of the Star Wars galaxy at Star Wars: Hyperspace Lounge, a high-end bar styled as a luxurious yacht-class spaceship. This richly themed, immersive experience will be reserved for adults every evening, offering interactive tasting experiences and signature beverages inspired by the films.
  • Exquisite Specialty Dining: Adults will savor gourmet meals and exceptional beverages at Palo Steakhouse, Enchanté by Chef Arnaud Lallement, and The Rose, an upscale suite of epicurean excellence inspired by the elegant icons of Walt Disney Animation Studios’ Beauty and the Beast.
  • Quiet Cove Pool District: At Quiet Cove, guests aged 18 and older will find a secluded adults-only district dedicated to lounging, sipping, and soaking. Set away from the bustle of family activities, this peaceful refuge will offer panoramic views of the ocean from a luxurious infinity pool. Other amenities include a whirlpool spa, an open-air bar, and a poolside cafe.

5 Roar-Some Highlights from Disney’s Jungle Cruise Press Conference

By Zach Johnson

Two days after making a splash at the world premiere of Disney’s Jungle Cruise, four of the film’s stars—Dwayne Johnson, Emily Blunt, Édgar Ramírez, and Jack Whitehall—returned to Disneyland on Monday for a virtual press conference with media from all over the world.

Releasing simultaneously in theaters and on Disney+ with Premier Access on July 30, Disney’s Jungle Cruise stars Johnson as Frank Wolff, a charismatic skipper and head of the Jungle Navigation Company; Blunt as Lily Houghton, a strongminded scientist and explorer; Ramírez as Captain Aguirre, fearsome leader of the cutthroat conquistadors; and Whitehall as MacGregor Houghton, a proper English gent who’s simply along for the ride.

Disney’s Jungle Cruise “was made in the spirit of films that we all grew up watching,” explained Blunt, who cited Indiana Jones, Romancing the Stone, and The African Queen among her favorite films. “They’re just joy bombs. They’re nostalgic, and we wanted to pierce people’s hearts directly with the spirit of those films that we all loved as children.”

Here’s what else the cast had to say during the virtual press conference:

jungle cruise

1. Dwayne Johnson went overboard to convince Emily Blunt to be his co-star.
Johnson said he signed on to the project “immediately,” whereas Blunt required a little more convincing. “Our director, Jaume Collet-Serra, was flying to New York to meet Emily to hand deliver the Jungle Cruise script,” Johnson said. “Before he went, I said, ‘Listen, I’m gonna send you a video. Just give it to her, from me.’ I said, ‘Emily, you are the only one who can do this movie.’” Blunt said she was “very touched” by the gesture, adding, “I really loved it!” Once she was on board, the co-stars “became pals for life” instantaneously, and their natural chemistry is apparent onscreen. “I knew when we met,” Blunt said. “We had this rapport that ping-ponged back and forth so quickly. I thought, ‘This is going to be fun.’”

jungle cruise

2. “How many of you are on the Jungle Cruise for the first time? Good! So am I!”
Johnson and Whitehall first experienced the pun-fueled riverboat adventure ride as children. Blunt and Ramírez, however, didn’t board the world-famous Jungle Cruise until the night of the premiere. “I loved it,” said Blunt. “I thought it was very whimsical and sweet, and I could see the elements from the ride that have made it into the film.” Ramírez said he experienced the attraction with his family and friends after the screening, “and I loved it for the same reasons that Emily just described, because it was simple, it was cute, it was tender, and it was silly.” The movie draws inspiration from its namesake attraction and brings it to the “next level,” he added. “It [has] that delicious silliness that is so refreshing.”

jungle cruise

3. Jack Whitehall’s character isn’t as superficial as he first appears.
In one scene, MacGregor reveals to Frank that he previously broke off three engagements to women because his “interests happily lay elsewhere.” He then explains that he would do anything for his sister, Lily—including following her into the Amazon—as she was the only person who stood by him after he came out. “I think it was a scene that we really wanted to get right,” said Whitehall. “What’s so great about this movie is that all of the characters feel so fleshed out. And all of them have interesting backstories, and they’re fully realized.”

jungle cruise

4. Édgar Ramírez’s character adds a supernatural element to the film.
Captain Aguirre causes major problems for Frank, Lily, and McGregor as they cruise through the Amazon… but Ramírez doesn’t see him as a bad guy. “Is he a villain? He’s misunderstood,” Ramírez argued. “It comes from pain. I feel for him.” What he loves about the conquistadors—and Aguirre, specifically—is that they take the audience on a journey into the past. “You have all these fantastical elements, and that’s what I go to the movies for. I want to be disconnected from reality and go on a journey and be able to dream of fantastical places, and fantastical characters, and fantastical creatures. So, I’m very happy.”

jungle cruise

5. Jaume Collet-Serra literally created a fun environment for the cast and crew.
The film had an expert stunt team that designed incredible sequences for the actors, but Collet-Serra insisted that they always be character-driven. Some of the stunts, it turned out, would be easier to execute than others. “The vine swing, for me, was the most challenging because [Johnson] would not let me get one straight take! He pushed it so far—every time—to try and make me laugh on that vine swing,” Blunt recalled. “I was like, ‘Just tell me what you’re going to say this time so I can be prepared!’ And every time he’d throw in some awful improv that would make me laugh. I don’t know how many times we must have shot that.” According to Whitehall, Collet-Serra created a playful environment. “The script was amazing, but we were given the space to improvise. He really encouraged that. There were probably a few jokes that ended up on the cutting room floor… for the right reasons!”

Meet the Characters of Disney’s Jungle Cruise

By the D23 Team

Disney’s Jungle Cruise, inspired by the classic Disney theme park attraction, is a rollicking thrill ride down the mighty and mysterious Amazon, set to make waves when it arrives in theaters and on Disney+ Premier Access on Friday, July 30. Featuring a star-studded cast led by Dwayne Johnson as the wisecracking skipper Frank Wolff and Emily Blunt as determined botanist Dr. Lily Houghton, Jungle Cruise is a pulse-quickening adventure in which Lily enlists Frank’s guide service and his ramshackle boat, La Quila, to convey her through the deepest and most dangerous parts of the Amazon River to try to uncover the mystery of an ancient tree—one with the power to change the fate of humanity. Here is a guide to the dazzling array of colorful characters you will meet beginning this Friday when Jungle Cruise debuts.

jungle cruise

Frank Wolff/Dwayne Johnson
Charismatic skipper Frank Wolff is head of the Jungle Navigation Company. Opportunistic and endlessly charming, Frank leads unwitting tourists on sightseeing cruises along the Amazon that are low on substance but high on humor. As a producer, the potential for a Jungle Cruise–influenced feature film project was tantalizing enough, but to take on the mantle of Frank, the down-on-his-luck skipper of the jungle cruise riverboat, was chock-full of possibilities for Johnson. Describing his character, Johnson says, “Frank is a skipper on the Amazon, and he takes a lot of pride in what he does. There are elements as the movie progresses where you start to realize things about Frank that one would never have guessed. The man is an old soul who has a very unique perspective on life itself. Frank meets Lily, who is ambitious and brave and funny and charming and beautiful, and all these things eventually remind him how great life can be.”

jungle cruise

Dr. Lily Houghton/Emily Blunt
Dr. Lily Houghton is a determined British scientist and explorer who is as brilliant as she is fearless. Driven not only by her ideals but by an unrelenting desire to prove herself, free-spirited Lily is a force to be reckoned with. “I was just so struck by Lily’s determination and tenacity, and the fact that she was so ahead of her time, considering that the film is set in 1917,” says Blunt. “There was so much inequality between men and women and what was expected of her at the time. But she doesn’t subscribe to what was appropriate for her sex. And I found her really funny. She’s very reckless and heedless and adventurous. I admired her spirit.”

jungle cruise

Captain Aguirre/Edgar Ramírez
Captain Aguirre is the fearsome leader of a cutthroat crew of soldiers. These cursed men are powerful fighters who carry a personal vendetta that makes them even more of a threat to Frank and Lily on their quest. “I also love the mystery of my character, Aguirre, and the duality of the character,” Ramirez says. “To play a character like Aguirre, who walks that very thin line between good and evil, is very interesting.”

jungle cruise

MacGregor Houghton/Jack Whitehall
Lily’s brother, MacGregor, joins her and Frank on their expedition down the Amazon. Dapper MacGregor enjoys the finer things in life—stylish fashion, fine dining and elegant living—even in the middle of the rain forest. British comedian/actor Jack Whitehall is perfectly cast as a well-meaning sibling, whose often inept attempts to take care of his sister give the film some of its most hilarious moments. Although he and Blunt had never met, they soon discovered some unexpected overlaps in their backgrounds growing up in the same part of London. The pair easily fell into a familial rapport. “Our backstories are very similar,” notes Whitehall, “so Emily and I playing sister and brother just seems so right. I think we’ve been able to transfer all of those weird connections we have on to the screen in the best possible way.”

jungle cruise

Nilo/Paul Giamatti
Owner of a wildly successful sightseeing cruise company, Nilo is a powerful figure—and a tough competitor—in the Amazonian port town where Frank ekes out a living with his ramshackle boat. Veteran actor Paul Giamatti portrays Nilo, who has a long history with Frank Wolff, Johnson’s character. “Nilo keeps Frank under his thumb,” says Giamatti. “He extorts money out of him, and he wants all the boats in the town. He even wants Frank’s beat-up boat. Nilo just wants to control everything. So he’s bullying Frank to get what he wants.” Frank’s boat, La Quila, is the exact opposite of Nilo’s slick, state-of-the-art tourist boats that are moored in the same harbor. “La Quila is a wonderful sort of character in and of itself,” comments Giamatti. “It’s just a fantastic, beat-up old trooper of a boat, which Frank is like too, in many ways. Frank’s been around a long time, and the boat’s been around a long time.”

jungle cruise

Prince Joachim/Jesse Plemons
Prince Joachim is a wealthy and capable young commander with an arsenal of military-grade weapons at his disposal. In his quest for power and glory, he ruthlessly seeks the secret at the heart of Lily and Frank’s journey. “We tried to create a villain character that feels unique,” Plemons says. “It was just about finding his quirks. He’s someone who is forward-thinking and looking far ahead into the future. So, I tried to keep that in mind when I was working on the character.”

Disneyland Hosts a Splashy Jungle Cruise Premiere

By Zach Johnson

The world premiere of Disney’s Jungle Cruise was held where it all began: Disneyland! On Saturday night, stars Dwayne Johnson, Emily Blunt, Edgar Ramírez, Jack Whitehall, Veronica Falcón and Raphael Alejandro joined director Jaume Collet-Serra and producers John Davis, Beau Flynn, John Fox, Dany Garcia and Hiram Garcia for a walk down the red carpet. “It feels very warm and openhearted. It’s in the spirit of the film,” Blunt said of the splashy soirée. “It’s got this whimsical, old-fashioned feeling. It’s beautiful—I’m so happy.”

Johnson and Blunt arrived via La Quila, the crumbling-but-charming boat seen in the film. And there was no better venue for the event than Disneyland, as the film is inspired by its theme park ride. According to Collet-Serra, “It’s a memory we’ll have for a long, long time.”

Fans have eagerly been awaiting the release of Disney’s Jungle Cruise, and Saturday’s premiere marked the first time the cast and crew watched the film with an audience. “It’s been a long journey for me and for the cast,” said Collet-Serra. “Like Dwayne says, ‘It’s the adventure of a lifetime.’ And it has been for all of us involved.” Ramírez, who plays Aguirre, echoed Collet-Serra’s sentiment, saying, “It’s been such a ride for everyone… It’s been an adventure in itself just getting to this point. We’re very happy and we’re very, very excited.”

Whitehall, who plays MacGregor Houghton, agreed that having the world premiere at Disneyland felt special. “The scale of it is something else. I’ve never been to anything like this,” he said. “It feels like a really perfect place to put this movie out there into the world.”

“The fact that this day has finally come is great,” continued Whitehall. “It’s so nice that fans are able to be here and we’re not doing this virtually over Zoom. It’s actually happening! There are people here, and we’re going to be sharing it and watching it on the big screen.”

Mickey Mouse and Minnie Mouse wore their best safari attire for the event, and other famous guests in attendance included Clark Gregg, Tiffany Haddish, AJ McLean, Simu Liu, Marsai Martin, John Stamos, Lindsey Vonn, Disney Legend Ming-Na Wenn and Nina West.

Releasing simultaneously in theaters and on Disney+ with Premier Access on July 30, Disney’s Jungle Cruise is an adventure-filled, rollicking thrill-ride down the Amazon with wisecracking skipper Frank Wolff (Johnson) and fearless botanist Dr. Lily Houghton (Blunt). Lily is determined to find an ancient tree—one with unparalleled healing abilities that possess the power to change the future of medicine. Thrust on this epic quest together, Frank and Lily encounter countless dangers and supernatural forces, all lurking in the deceptive beauty of the lush rainforest. As the secrets of the ancient tree unfold, the stakes become even higher as Lily and Frank’s fate—and mankind’s—hangs in the balance.
