Lauren Ridloff and Alaqua Cox on Deaf Representation in the MCU

By Zach Johnson

In the past year, two Deaf characters have debuted in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), furthering The Walt Disney Company’s and Marvel Studios’ commitment to inclusive storytelling. First came Makkari, the speedster played by Lauren Ridloff in Eternals, then came Maya Lopez, the gang leader played by Alaqua Cox, in Hawkeye. Disney is “Celebrating the Accessible” this Disability Pride Month by honoring the diversity and intersectionality of the disability and neurodivergent communities via increased representation, celebration, education, and accessibility. In excerpts from recent issues of Disney twenty-three (offered exclusively to D23 Gold Members as a benefit of their membership), the two stars open up about what that means to them.

“I’m amazed with Marvel because they are doing such a great job with diversity and representation,” says Alaqua, who will reprise her role in Echo, coming to Disney+ in 2023. “It means so much to me because I feel like kids with all types of cultures and disabilities deserve to have more role models that look like them… I’m so grateful to have this opportunity because I am one of the examples of how we are going to shape the minds of the next generation, and I hope they are happy to watch their culture represented accurately and authentically. Representation matters more than we know.”

Inside The Domo, the starship used by the Eternals, Makkari, played by Lauren Ridloff, leans against Druig, played by Barry Keoghan, as they both look up. Makkari is holding an ancient artifact and wearing a graphic tee, a knit hoodie, and delicate jewelry. Druig is wearing a black leather jacket and a black shirt.

Lauren admits she “didn’t think too much about the fact” that [she] was going to be the first Deaf Super Hero in the MCU until Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige introduced the cast during San Diego Comic-Con in 2019. “When I walked onstage, I noticed a group of people going positively crazy, hands waving in the air,” she recalls. “That’s the deaf way of applauding, so when I realized there was a group of Deaf fans in the audience, the profundity of it hit me right there and made it hard to stay standing up.

“Being cast as a powerful entity who happens to be deaf is groundbreaking,” Lauren continues. “It shouldn’t be like that in this day and age, but it’s finally happening—and on such an enormous platform. Finally, the world sees how I exist as a deaf individual. My strengths are different than most and have a place here in this universe. One just has to learn how to perceive nonconformity as an opportunity for untapped power.”

Marvel Studios hired consultants and interpreters to ensure that both actresses felt supported while filming their respective projects. In addition, several actors and filmmakers learned how to sign basic expressions in American Sign Language (ASL). “I remember meeting Jeremy Renner on my first day of work,” Alaqua says. “I was a nervous wreck, as it was my very first acting job. He complimented me in ASL, which comforted me. Hailee Steinfeld also spelled out her name to me in ASL at the studio where we were doing our stunt training. I thought it was sweet of them to put in the effort to learn basic ASL just to communicate with me. It means a lot as a deaf person.”

Maya Lopez, played by Alaqua Cox, uses American Sign Language (ASL) to communicate with Kingpin (Vincent D’Onofrio), in a scene from Marvel Studios’ Hawkeye. Maya is wearing a black leather jacket and skintight jeans, and her hair is pulled back. She has cuts and bruises on her face. Kingpin, whose back is turned to the camera, is holding a cane and wearing a white blazer. They are standing inside a colorful restaurant that is decorated for Christmas with garland, ornaments, and more.

As for Lauren, she says Angelina Jolie, who plays the warrior Thena, “was the first to disclose that she had some familiarity with ASL” and used it to introduce her children. Lauren’s husband, Douglas Ridloff, helped her other co-stars—Gemma Chan, Salma Hayek, Brian Tyree Henry, Barry Keoghan, Don Lee, Richard Madden, Lia McHugh, and Kumail Nanjiani—learn the language. “The cast was very open and receptive to opportunities to sign their dialogue, so we had Douglas work as an ASL consultant,” she says. “He taught them how to sign as if they’d been signing for thousands of years.”

Alaqua and Lauren are both proud of the strides Marvel Studios has made for Deaf representation, and they are excited to see its stories become even more accessible. “There is now a lot of discussion about creating new [ASL] signs for the MCU—name signs for characters,” Lauren says. “Sign language now possesses space within that incredible fantasy world of superhuman skills and abilities. The community is responding to that, so new signs are coming out as a result. We’re now part of the Super Hero vernacular.”

Everything You Need to Know About ZOMBIES 3

By Zach Johnson

Not even a Z-band can temper our excitement for ZOMBIES 3!

It’s Addison and Zed’s final year at Seabrook High School and relations between humans and monsters have never been better. Zed is determined to win a football scholarship, but he’s feeling the pressure—not only because he would be the first zombie to ever attend college, opening the door for all monsters, but because he wants to enroll in Mountain College alongside Addison, who’s already been accepted.

“If he doesn’t go to college and Addison does, who knows what that means for their relationship?” Manheim asks D23. “We have a very cute little song that explores how they’re feeling about their relationship. It’s my favorite song in the movie and it was also my favorite number to shoot.” Elaborating on the school sweethearts’ dynamic, Donnelly says, “It’s really cool to see how mature Addison and Zed have become, because they have so much history and chemistry. They really love each other, but they’re worried about what might happen—even though nothing is actually wrong.”

“They’ve grown a lot together,” Manheim adds. “Now they’re at a fork in the road.”

(Left to Right): Aliens A-li (Kyra Tantao), A-lan (Matt Cornett), and A-Spen (Terry Hu) stand in the town square of Seabrook at night. They have icy blue hair and are wearing futuristic outfits in shades of blue, silver, and white.

It isn’t long before Addison and Zed realize there are multiple forks in the road. For one thing, Addison is still struggling with wanting to know who she is and where she comes from. For the time being, she’s keeping busy getting ready for the international cheer-off, which brings new group of outsiders—aliens—to Seabrook. “Zed has the same reaction to the aliens that he did with the werewolves [in ZOMBIES 2],” Manheim says. “He doesn’t know if they’re safe or why they’re here. He just wants to make sure that Addison is OK.” Terry Hu, Matt Cornett, and Kyra Tantao join the cast as A-Spen, A-lan, and A-li, respectively—a trio of super-smart, telepathic aliens who harbor a big secret. “Having the new cast members as a part of our team was amazing,” Manheim says. “They’re all amazing people and their characters add a completely new dynamic to the movie. It allows for some crazy songs and dances, I’ll tell you that.”

Seabrook begrudgingly allows the aliens to stay for the competition, but the humans and monsters grow suspicious when they discover that the aliens may be looking for more than a friendly competition. “The aliens are here on a secret mission,” Hu tells D23. “The aliens’ planet is not well anymore, so now they need to find a new home.”

(Left to Right): Werewolves Wynter (Ariel Martin), Willa (Chandler Kinney), and Wyatt (Pearce Joza) stand in a line. Their brown hair has white streaks in it, and they are all wearing earth tones.

To do that, they must find “the most precious thing in Seabrook.” The instructions are vague, Hu admits, and things only get more confusing “once the aliens turn off their emotional suppressors and get distracted by their own specific things in Seabrook.” Without spoiling what distracts them, Trevor Tordjman, who plays student body president Bucky, says he can’t wait for fans to see how the aliens interact with the humans and monsters. “They really mix it up in Seabrook,” he says. “It’s very exciting.”

As for the werewolves? “The wolves are fully integrated into Seabrook life,” says Chandler Kinney, who plays pack leader Willa. “They are loving it.” Since ZOMBIES 2, Wynter (Ariel Martin) joined the football team, and Wyatt (Pearce Joza) developed a crush on hacktivist zombie Eliza (Kylee Russell), who secured an internship with Z-Corp. One thing that hasn’t changed, though, is that humans and monsters alike are apt to break into song at any moment. “The new dance numbers are bigger and better,” Kinney tells D23. “Draico Johnson, our choreographer, took them to the next level.”

Don’t forget to stream ZOMBIES 3, debuting Friday, July 15, on Disney+. A special “Lost Song” version of the movie will premiere Friday, August 12, on Disney Channel.

By Zach Johnson

The world premiere of ZOMBIES 3 had everything from aliens and cheerleaders to werewolves and zombies! Disney+ rolled out the blue carpet Saturday at the Barker Hanger in Santa Monica, Calif., to celebrate the upcoming movie’s streaming debut. “This is overwhelming!” Milo Manheim, who plays Zed, told reporters. “There are people in every direction. I’m surrounded by people I love, and that’s all I can ask for!”

Also in attendance were cast members Meg Donnelly (Addison), Chandler Kinney (Willa), Ariel Martin (Wynter), Pearce Joza (Wyatt), Carla Jeffery (Bree), Trevor Tordjman (Bucky), Kylee Russell (Eliza), Terry Hu (A-spen), Matt Cornett (A-lan), Kyra Tantao (A-li), James Godfrey (Bonzo), Kingston Foster (Zoey), Jasmine Renée Thomas (Stacey), Emilia McCarthy (Lacey), Noah Zulkfikar  (Jacey), and Naomi Snieckus (Principal Lee), in addition to director Paul Hoen, screenwriters and executive producers David Light and Joseph Raso, executive producer Suzanne Farwell, and choreographer Draico Johnson.

“There’s a lot of people that I’m seeing for the first time since we finished filming,” Cornett, a newcomer to the ZOMBIES franchise, told reporters. “It’s like a reunion.”

At the world premiere of ZOMBIES 3, co-stars Kyra Tantao (left), Terry Hu (center), and Matt Cornett (right) wrap their arms around each other for a photo against the movie’s branded backdrop, which features the logos for ZOMBIES 3 and Disney+. Kyra is wearing a futuristic jacket with a white collar, and she has dozens of pins in her hair; Terry is wearing a floral embroidered blazer and a black bandeau top, along with delicate gold jewelry; and Matt is wearing a white blazer and over an icy blue tank top.

Celebrity guests who attended the premiere with their families included Jensen Ackles, Rachel Bilson, Hayden Christensen, Donald Faison, and Tiffani Thiessen. And because this was the biggest ZOMBIES premiere in the franchise’s history, the event was of course packed with familiar Disney faces, such as Zelia Luz Ankrum, Malachi Barton, Saylor Bell, Will Buie Jr., Kylie Cantrall, Lucy Davis, Scarlett Estevez, Reed Horstmann, Israel Johnson, Peyton Elizabeth Lee, Adrian Lyles, Mallory James Mahoney, Kayden Muller, Isabella Pappas, Dara Reneé, Christian J. Simon, and Shiloh Verrico. See photos of the aforementioned guests and many others in the ZOMBIES 3 premiere gallery (below), and stream ZOMBIES 3 starting Friday, July 15, on Disney+. It will be followed by a special “Lost Song” version of the movie, airing Friday, August 12, on Disney Channel.

A Watchlist of Chris Hemsworth’s Awe-worthy Appearances in the MCU

By Victoria Hunt

In 2011, Chris Hemsworth took on the titular role in Marvel Studios’ Thor. And he certainly proved worthy! Since then, he’s taken on the mantle of the God of Thunder in several subsequent films, including the highly anticipated Thor: Love and Thunder, premiering in U.S. theaters on July 8. The film reunites Hemsworth with director Taika Waititi, who helmed the raucous Thor: Ragnarok.

To celebrate Hemsworth’s latest foray as Thor in the 29th film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, we’ve compiled a list of his prior appearances, in order of release, that are perfect to watch or re-watch on Disney+ before seeing Thor: Love and Thunder in theaters!

Chris Hemsworth, as Thor, stands in armor and a red cape looking to his left as he holds his hammer in his right hand in front of a dimly lit background.

Thor (2011)
It’s hard to believe that it’s been more than 11 years since Hemsworth made his debut in Marvel Studios Thor. With a hammer in one hand and vengeance in his heart, this oh-so-mighty origin tale brought Thor’s earthly banishment to compelling life. Directed by Kenneth Branagh, and chock-full of legendary actors, including Anthony Hopkins and Stellan Skarsgård, the film and Hemsworth made their mark, leading to his inclusion in several Marvel Studios titles that followed.

Thor crouches on one knee in his armor extending his right arm holding onto his hammer, Mjolnir.

The Avengers (2012)
When Thor’s devious brother Loki (Tom Hiddleston) attempts to invade Earth, the Avengers gather to form an alliance to thwart his evil schemes. Hemsworth’s role as Thor in this MCU film proved to be a major success at the box office and won 30 awards including setting a Guinness World Record for the highest-grossing domestic opening weekend of all time to date.

Thor stands looking off in his long-sleeved armor and red cape, with hammer in hand.

Thor: The Dark World (2013)
In the aftermath of Marvel’s Thor and The Avengers, Thor fights to restore order across the cosmos…but an ancient race led by the vengeful Malekith (Christopher Eccleston) returns to plunge the universe back into darkness. Faced with an enemy that even Odin and Asgard cannot withstand, Thor embarks on his most perilous and personal journey yet, but one that reunites him with Jane Foster (Natalie Portman). The film also showcased the chemistry between Hemsworth and Hiddleston, as they played two brothers battling on the opposite sides of good and evil.

Thor stands in front of the Hulk and Captain America on his right and Iron Man, Black Widow, and Hawkeye on his left- each suited up in full armor.

Avengers: Age of Ultron (2015)
Chris Hemsworth returned as Thor to save humanity from Ultron’s evil plans, along with Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.), Captain America (Chris Evans), Hulk (Mark Ruffalo), Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson), The Scarlet Witch (Elizabeth Olsen), and Hawkeye (Jeremy Renner). The Super Heroes are put to the ultimate test as the fate of the planet hangs in the balance. As the villainous Ultron emerges, it is up to the Avengers to stop him from enacting his terrible plans, and soon uneasy alliances and unexpected action pave the way for an epic and unique global adventure!

In a medium close-up, Thor stands in a metal helmet and large metal amor over his shoulders.

Thor: Ragnarok (2017)
A Super Hero’s job is never done. When Thor and the Hulk are imprisoned and pitted against each other, they must figure out a way to unite to stop the evil Hela (Cate Blanchett) from destroying Thor’s beloved Asgard. Hemsworth wanted to do something different with Thor this time around, which he achieved with director Taika Waititi, putting an entirely new spin on the character in this rollicking adventure that played off Hemsworth’s comedic abilities.

A bright blue light lights up the right side of Hemsworth’s face in a close-up headshot.

Avengers: Infinity War (2018)
This Oscar® nominated Avengers film was an ultra-success at movie theaters across the globe. A star-studded cinematic journey, a decade in the making and spanning the entire MCU, Thor is among fellow Avengers and allies such as Black Panther’s T’Challa (Chadwick Boseman), Spider-Man’s Peter Parker (Tom Holland), and Guardians of the Galaxy’s Gamora (Zoe Saldana) to battle against Thanos (Josh Brolin).

Thor stands in dark, steel armor as blue lighting shoots through his body.

Avengers: Endgame (2019)
After Avengers: Infinity War, Thanos’ devastation of life left the Avengers displaced and feeling defeated. The film introduced yet another incarnation of Hemsworth’s Thor. Depressed and often drunk, Thor suffers from self-doubt, blaming himself for Thanos’ galactic genocide. The film also featured a major changing of the Asgardian guard. After getting his mojo back and defeating Thanos, Thor abdicates his throne and names Valkyrie the king of New Asgard, before hitching a ride with the Guardians of the Galaxy for whatever comes next.

The animated version of Thor reaches down in a blue t-shirt with his left hand to reunite with his hammer.

What If….? (2021)
In this animated twist on the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Chris Hemsworth returns as the voice of Thor in season one’s “What if… Thor was an only child?” episode. The storyline follows what may have happened if Thor’s family had never adopted Loki. Would Thor have ever learned to be selfless? Would he be the hero is he is today?
