Hong Kong Disneyland The eleventh Disney park, which opened in Hong Kong on September 12, 2005. Phase I of the development, located on 310 acres of land on Lantau Island, is on land reclaimed from Penny’s Bay. The resort includes the park and two hotels—the Hong Kong Disneyland Hotel and Disney’s Hollywood Hotel—totaling 1,000 rooms. There is a Main Street, U.S.A.; Fantasyland; Adventureland; and Tomorrowland. Tomorrowland is entirely themed as an intergalactic spaceport, with restaurants, shops, and attractions all carrying through the theme. Fantasyland is entered through Sleeping Beauty Castle, based on the one at Disneyland. In 1999 Disney and the government of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region signed a master project agreement for the development and operation of Hong Kong Disneyland. The site is 30 minutes from downtown Hong Kong. After initial reclamation work on the land, a groundbreaking ceremony was held on January 12, 2003, and after over a year of construction, a castle-topping ceremony was held on September 23, 2004. Major park expansions later added Toy Story Land, Mystic Point, and Grizzly Gulch, and in 2014 plans were announced to build a 750-room Disney-branded hotel dedicated to the spirit of exploration that celebrates exotic locations from around the world—the hotel will increase the number of hotel rooms at the resort by 75 percent.
