Little Matchgirl, The (film) An animated short, without spoken dialogue, directed by Roger Allers and set to the music of Alexander Borodin’s “String Quartet No. 2 in D Major: Third Movement: Noturno (Andante).” A poor young girl finds visions of happiness in the fiery flames of the matches that she lights to keep warm. 7 min. The music was recorded by the Emerson String Quartet. From a story by Hans Christian Andersen. Released on the Little Mermaid DVD on October 3, 2006, after a May 13 screening at the Eugene [Oregon] Film Festival and an August 23 run in Los Angeles for Academy Award consideration. Nominated for an Academy Award.
