Meet the Characters of Star Wars: The Acolyte

By Jocelyn Buhlman

Star Wars: The Acolyte is about to make the lightspeed jump to Disney+ for its two-episode premiere on June 4, and it’s taking all our Force powers to wait to dive into the series’ mysterious story. Set approximately 100 years before Star Wars: The Phantom Menace, The Acolyte follows the Jedi at the height of their power, facing a sinister unknown threat. While much of the series itself is shrouded in mystery, we do know a little bit about the characters at the center of this intergalactic intrigue:

Mae—a woman in a cloak and black face mask—holds silver daggers in both hands, posed as though ready to strike an attacker. A black border frames the bottom of the image with the logo for Star Wars: The Acolyte written in white font.

Mae (Amandla Stenberg)
We don’t know much about Mae, other than she’s central to the conflict and mystery in The Acolyte from the jump. Her tragic past has led her to seek vengeance on those who have wronged her—no matter who stands in her way.

Jedi Master Sol holds his blue lightsaber with both hands, turned towards the camera as though preparing for an attack. A black border frames the bottom of the image with the logo for Star Wars: The Acolyte written in white font.

Master Sol (Lee Jung-Jae)
As a highly respected Jedi Master, Master Sol is strong in the ways of the Force—and he keeps his powerful emotions in balance through his Jedi training. However, his control is tested when the struggle central to The Acolyte throws him into internal conflict.

Jedi Master Indara faces the camera, her left hand held forward in the “stop” motion. She holds her ignited green lightsaber in her right hand. A black border frames the bottom of the image with the logo for Star Wars: The Acolyte written in white font.

Jedi Master Indara (Carrie-Anne Moss)
With great physical and mental skill, Master Indara has total control over her Force abilities. She is viewed as a commanding presence, never seeking out combat but with enough skill to engage on her own terms.

In an image from Star Wars: The Acolyte, Yord Fandar, a humanoid Jedi Master, stands next to Jecki Lon, a half-human, half-theelin Jedi padawan. Both are looking towards the camera in surprise at something offscreen.

Yord Fandar (Charlie Barnett)
Dedicated to the rules and his role as a guardian at the Jedi Temple, Yord Fandar is overachieving to a fault, letting his need to be by-the-book cloud his mind.

Jecki Lon, a humanoid alien with white skin and hair and horns lining her forehead, holds her green lightsaber out, a train of green light implying she has just swung her blade towards the viewer. A black border frames the bottom of the image with the logo for Star Wars: The Acolyte written in white font.

Jecki Lon (Dafne Keen)
Half human and half theelin, Jecki Lon is a studious Padawan to Master Sol. Despite her young age, Jecki conducts herself with a calm maturity beyond her years.

In an image from Star Wars: The Acolyte, Jedi Master Vernestra Rwoh, a green humanoid alien, stands in a forest looking at something offscreen.

Vernestra “Vern” Rwoh (Rebecca Henderson)
Book lovers may already know Vernestra Rwoh from the Star Wars: The High Republic books such as  A Test of Courage and Out of the Shadows. As one of the youngest Jedi Knights in a generation, joining the order at 15, Vern has ascended the ranks to leader. She is known for her purple-bladed lightsaber that changes into a lightwhip.

Ron Howard on Directing Jim Henson Idea Man—A New Disney+ Documentary About a “One-in-a-Generation Talent”

By Moss Cohen

Disney Legend Jim Henson was many things.

He was the beloved creator of The Muppets, an innovator, and according to director Ron Howard, a “one-in-a-generation talent.”

Howard explores the many aspects of Henson and his wondrously creative life in Jim Henson Idea Man—a new documentary from Disney Branded Television about the creator that premieres on Disney+ on Friday.

We spoke with the famed director about the project, what made Henson special, and what drew Howard to Idea Man.

What is the story you’re trying to tell with Jim Henson Idea Man?

I have always been a fan of Jim’s work and was very excited about the opportunity. Many people have felt impacted by his work, yet there is still an entire generation with lesser knowledge on his contributions to cinema, television, and pop culture. I hope this story is an honest reflection of Jim’s immense creativity and serves as a catalyst for opportunity for audiences to feel inspired by.

Jim Henson is one of the most iconic creators in pop culture history. As a creator yourself, what drew you to direct this documentary?

I have long admired Jim and found his work ethic to be extremely influential to my own. As I began researching deeper into his creative history, I learned things about Jim that I felt needed to be recognized wholeheartedly. I was drawn to re-telling the story of this one-in-a-generation talent while still relishing in the challenge of compacting the story of this creatively complex individual in 105 minutes.

Jim Henson tinkers with a Kermit the Frog Muppet.

What is the one thing you learned about Jim Henson that surprised you?

Jim operated on the assumption that creativity has no bounds and it reflected in all his projects. I hope my film creates opportunity for audiences to go back to his work and see just how far he was able to stretch his ideas across various mediums. To my surprise, this restless and burning creative spirit became more apparent than ever as I dug deeper into the creation of this film.

Jim Henson and The Walt Disney Company were connected in many ways. How did working with Disney help you tell Henson’s story?

There has always been a natural synergy between The Walt Disney Company and Jim Henson. Beyond Imagine Entertainment and me, I wanted to ensure Jim’s children and The Henson Company felt confident in their collaborators. In this search, it became increasingly evident that Disney — with their amassed knowledge of Jim and their continued support of his work—was the best fit.

Jim Henson Idea Man is now streaming on Disney+.

How the Sherman Brothers Shaped Disney’s Musical Legacy

By the D23 team

In honor of the late Disney Legends Richard M. Sherman (who passed away on May 25) and Robert B. Sherman, we’re sharing a story that originally appeared in the fall 2023 issue of Disney twenty-three. It has been modified for D23.com.

From “Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious” to “I Wan’na Be Like You,” songwriters Richard M. Sherman and Robert B. Sherman crafted some of the most iconic and timeless songs in The Walt Disney Company’s century-long history. During their tenure at Disney, the siblings—affectionately known as the Sherman brothers—composed over 200 songs for 27 films and 24 television productions. They also created memorable theme park melodies, including “It’s a Small World,” “There’s a Great Big Beautiful Tomorrow,” and “The Tiki, Tiki, Tiki Room.”

Now, through archival interviews, the Sherman brothers—in their own words—reminisce on meeting Walt Disney, working on Mary Poppins (1964), and making the tough decision to leave Disney.

Walt first took notice of the Sherman brothers after they wrote a seminal pop hit for one of the Mickey Mouse Club’s biggest young stars, Disney Legend Annette Funicello.

“Bob and I were writing pop music right out of college, and by a pure piece of serendipity, we had a song of ours recorded by Annette Funicello,” recalled Richard, in an interview some years ago. “’Tall Paul’ turned our lives around and became a huge hit for us and Annette. It was her first Top 10 song, and it established her as a teen idol… We didn’t know it at the time, but Walt was very conscious of everything Annette was doing. The whole world was crazy about Annette!”

Following the success of ‘Tall Paul,” Disney Legend Jimmy Johnson and then general manager of the Walt Disney Music Company, asked the Sherman brothers to write a song for Funicello to sing in The Horsemasters (1961), a two-part television movie for Walt Disney’s Wonderful World of Color.

“We came up with three songs over a weekend; we wrote like crazy,” Richard said. “We had a slow, a medium, and a fast one. We decided to go with the medium song, and it was called ‘The Strummin’ Song.’ We came into the studio and had no idea to whom we were going to play this song, except for Jimmy. He said, ‘I like the medium-tempo song. Now we have to play this for Walt.’ We said, ‘What?!’ Jimmy said, ‘Walt hears everything. There is nothing that goes into a program of his that he doesn’t see and OK.’ That is how we first met Walt. We didn’t know it, but Walt had already asked Jimmy, ‘Who are those guys who write the cute songs for Annette? Why don’t you have them take a stab at writing for this picture?”

During their first meeting with Walt, however, things did not go as planned.

“At one point [Walt] said, ‘OK, this picture is about identical twins.’ He started pitching the story of The Parent Trap [1961], which became our first major picture at Disney,” Richard said. “Here we are, talking to a living legend, a man the whole world knows and loves, and he’s telling us about another picture we’re supposed to be writing for. My brother, Bob—God bless him—said, ‘Mr. Disney, we came to play a song we’ve written for Annette to sing in The Horsemasters.’ Walt went, ‘Oh! Why didn’t you tell me?’ So, I sat down at the piano, and I played the song for him. His comment was, ‘Yeah! That’ll work.’ Then, ‘Listen, I spent a lot of time on this other thing, so why don’t you take a script home, read it, and see if you come up with any ideas?’ If Walt said to anyone, ‘That’ll work,’ that meant he was going to put that idea into a multi-million-dollar package. He never went into explanations.”

Following The Sword in the Stone (1963), which marked the first time they wrote music for an animated film, the Sherman brothers got to work on a priority project: Mary Poppins (1964), a film inspired by the P. L. Travers stories Walt’s family cherished.

They wrote a number of beloved tunes for the film, including “Jolly Holiday,” “Step in Time,” and “Let’s Go Fly a Kite.”

However, Walt felt one song—“The Eyes of Love”—was too “sugary.” He wanted “something with a little more snap in it,” Richard recalled. Thus, the song “A Spoonful of Sugar” was born.

“That was my brother’s concept,” Richard revealed. “We were trying to come up with a catchphrase, like ‘a stitch in time saves nine’ or ‘an apple a day keeps the doctor away.’” Inspiration struck after Robert’s son recounted receiving the polio vaccine; it didn’t taste bad, he explained, because the medicine came within a sugar cube. “Bob came in the next day, and he said, ‘What do you think of it, ‘A spoonful of sugar helps the medicine go down?’” Richard said. Because Mary Poppins “would never say exactly what you would expect her to say, every time the word ‘down’ occurs, the melody went up, it would truly be Mary Poppins. The minute I sat down to play it, I knew that was it. We were both jumping around like a couple of freaks! We knew we had found the key note for [Disney Legend Julie Andrews]. Walt said, ‘Julie wants something with more snap.’ So, the very opening verse was, ‘In every job that must be done there is an element of fun. You find the fun and—snap!—the job’s a game!’” he said with a laugh. “We put the snap in because she wanted snap in it.”

Next, the Sherman brothers began work on Winnie the Pooh and the Honey Tree (1966), where they were tasked with writing a theme for the “willy nilly silly old bear.”

The last animated feature Walt oversaw was The Jungle Book (1967), and by the time the Sherman brothers became involved, the film was already well into preproduction.

Following Walt’s passing, and while working on The Aristocrats (1970) and Bedknobs and Broomsticks (1971), the Sherman brothers made the tough decision to leave Disney.

“It was sad,” Richard admitted. “What we loved most about it was working for Walt, and he’d been gone for a year and a half. We stayed on until mid-1968; we had been there eight years. We came back for Bedknobs and worked six months… There was a board of directors, and they never could figure out what they wanted to do. We had one too many songs sliced out of pictures, one too many disappointments. We decided we were still young and active with a desire to write: ‘Let’s get out of here.’ We had lunch with our friends [at the studio] and they gave us a big plaque that read: ‘Your room is empty, but your melodies linger on.’”

When they returned to Disney decades later to contribute music for films such as The Tigger Movie (2000) and Christopher Robin (2018), the Sherman brothers stuck to their tried-and-true philosophy—one that had guided them since their early days with Walt himself.

“A songwriter writes these songs, and we must look for the spots in the action where they come normally and naturally. You can’t just shove them in,” Robert said. “We always wanted them to come in smoothly, so they were part of the dialogue… Richard and I always looked for the salient points in a story so we could carry the whole thing through. Walt liked that.”

Young Woman and the Sea Dives into the Life of a Groundbreaking Hero

By Moss Cohen

Trudy Ederle may not be a household name, but Walt Disney Studios’ Young Woman and the Sea, which hits theaters this weekend, is looking to change that.

“I love the story about Trudy and the fact that nobody’s ever heard of her before,” Jerry Bruckheimer, the film’s producer, said. “I felt audiences around the world should know about this amazing athlete who accomplished something back when it wasn’t kind of cool for women to be in the water.”

Daisy Ridley, who stars as Trudy and is an executive producer on the film, added that she loves how supportive Disney has been in helping tell Ederle’s story.

“A lot of people have said they haven’t seen a film like this in a little while,” she noted. “We had to have really good support in order to facilitate that.”

In a scene from Young Woman and the Sea, Trudy Ederle, played by Daisy Ridley, smiles in a swim lane. She is wearing a yellow swim cap.

After battling punishingly cold waters, jelly fish, and intense fatigue over the course of 14 hours and 34 minutes, Ederle became the first woman to swim the 21 miles of the English Channel — faster than any of the five men that had come before her. Her accomplishment was greeted with one of the biggest ticker-tape parades ever for an athlete.

And now her story gets the big screen treatment.

See It Big

Director Joachim Rønning captured Ederle’s journey in a way that “is undeniably awe inspiring on the big screen,” Ridley said.

In a movie theater, “you really get to experience that in its grandiose setting” she added.

“That scope, particularly watching it on a cinema screen, is so undeniable,” Ridley continued. “The majesty of what you’re witnessing and also this tiny speck of a person next to this boat who did this unbelievable feat.”

In a scene from Young Woman and the Sea, Trudy Ederle, played by Daisy Ridley, swims in open water as a ship sails nearby.

The joy of seeing Young Woman and the Sea in a theater extends not only to the grand sweep of the wide-open seas, but also to the immersive sound design and the meticulous work of production designer Nora Takacs Ekberg.

“What she created is so unbelievable,” Ridley explained. “Even the apartment [Trudy’s family] live in, the attention to detail is so stunning. Oscar Faura, our eirector of photography, the way it was filmed is so beautiful. And it really is this very intimate story, but obviously in a very large scale for a lot of it.”

In a scene from Young Woman and the Sea, Henry Ederle Jr., played by Ethan Rouse, Henry Ederle, played by Kim Bodnia, Margaret Ederle, played by Tilda Cobham-Hervey, and Trudy Ederle, played by Daisy Ridley sit around the dinner table as Gertrud Ederle, played by Jeanette Hain, serves dinner.

“It Had to Be Real”

A key challenge for Ridley was accurately portraying Ederle’s swimming skills.

“I trained for three months,” Ridley said. “We filmed and I also had to train after the filming day and on the weekends.”

To accomplish the proper effect of Ederle swimming through the English Channel, Ridley was filmed swimming in actual open waters in the Black Sea.

While filming a scene from Young Woman and the Sea, Trudy Ederle, played by Daisy Ridley, swims close to the ship where Jabez Wolffe, played by Christopher Eccleston, hangs over the side and hands her an apple. The crew is on the boat capturing the moment.

“It just feels like it had to be real” to allow audiences to connect with the story, Ridley said.

Bruckheimer noted that the film tried to “make it as real as possible.”

“There are plenty of visual effects movies, but it’s a true story,” he said. “You want to keep true as possible.”

In a scene from Young Woman and the Sea, Trudy Ederle, played by Daisy Ridley, is slathered in porpoise fat and wearing a swim cap and goggles. She faces the open water.

“A Perfect Movie for Disney”

Bruckheimer felt that Young Woman and the Sea was “such a perfect movie for Disney.”

And he should know, having produced almost 30 films with the studio over the last three decades.

“It’s an emotional story,” he said. “We all want to go to the cinema and be transported some place. And this takes you on this journey.”

In a scene from Young Woman and the Sea, Gertrud Ederle, played by Jeanette Hain, and Trudy Ederle, played by Daisy Ridley, embrace each other on the beach at night.

It harkens back to other Disney classics such as Remember the Titans, Miracle, and Invincible.

When screened for test audiences, Young Woman came back with the highest ratings for a film Bruckheimer has produced since The Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl, over 20 years ago.

“I think that’s what resonates with audiences. They laugh, they cry. There’s humor in it. There’s a lot of emotion,” Bruckheimer explained. “Emotion is one that wins it every time for an audience.”

He added, “I love the story about Trudy and the fact that nobody’s ever heard of her before.”

“Now, people will know who she is,” Bruckheimer said.

Young Woman and the Sea will open in select theaters May 31, 2024.

By Sohrab Osati

Star Wars fans, get ready for a lightspeed jump to The High Republic Era that’s set in a galaxy far, far, far away with the upcoming Disney+ series, The Acolyte. It is a time when the Republic is at peace and ruled by just and wise leaders, and it’s the peak of Jedi influence. This period showcases the Jedi as peacekeepers from the heart of the galaxy to the frontier that reached as far as the Outer Rim.During this time, the galaxy is not without its perils—despite the belief that the Sith were long extinct. The books in this era showcase the Jedi at their best, defending the galaxy against threats like marauding pirates called the Nihil, and ravenous plant-like creatures known as the Drengir.

Exclusively streaming on Disney+, The Acolyte premieres on June 4—and it’s all set against the vibrant backdrop of the High Republic, but deals with the threat of a different kind of darkness in this era.
