Typhoon Lagoon Fifty-six-acre water park at Walt Disney World; opened on June 1, 1989. After the popularity of River Country, Disney designers decided that another aquatic experience was needed, and they tried to outdo their former effort. The mythology of the place is that a typhoon hit the town in the past, marooning a shrimp boat, the Miss Tilly, perched precariously atop magical Mt. Mayday and leaving all in ruins. Now, with the water park, guests climb Mt. Mayday to slide down the slides into the pools below. Highlights are Castaway Creek, Shark Reef, Ketchakiddie Creek, and the water slides Humunga Kowabunga, Keelhall Falls, Gangplank Falls, Mayday Falls, Jib Jammer, Stern Burner, and Rudder Buster. The main lagoon features the world’s largest artificially created waves. Refreshments are available at Leaning Palms and Typhoon Tilly’s Galley & Grog. The Crush ‘n’ Gusher attraction was added in 2005. Shark Reef closed in 2016, and Miss Adventure Falls opened Mar. 12, 2017.
