Disney’s California Adventure has the beautiful Hyperion Theater, Disney Publishing has its Hyperion brand of adult books, and Disneyland Paris has its Café Hyperion . . . and it all started with an event that occurred on this day in 1925. Brothers Walt and Roy Disney put down a $400 deposit on a lot to build their new studio at 2719 Hyperion Avenue in Los Angeles. So what does the word Hyperion mean? It has two definitions. In mythology, Hyperion was a titan, the father of Helios, Selene, and Eos. Also, Hyperion is a natural satellite of the planet Saturn. Both terms seem appropriate since it’s the studio which produced the first Mickey Mouse cartoons and Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs—each of which has enjoyed astronomical success of mythological proportions.
