On this day in 1978, Hot Lead and Cold Feet, the film about the old west that was almost entitled Bloodshy, was released in theaters, featuring Jim Dale playing both Jasper Bloodshy and his brother Wild Billy, who compete for possession of the town founded by their father. This humorous throwback to films of the Wild West features all the clichés that one would expect in homage to that genre of film, including a shootout, a street brawl, leaping getaways, a hanging and a last-minute rescue… and that’s all within seconds of a single scene! Some extra hilarity was shot into the film with Don Knotts as the rough-and-tumble town sheriff, Denver Kid. A typical example of the sheriff’s misfortune occurs when the scoundrel Rattlesnake (Jack Elam) proclaims, “My sister says you insulted her! No man insults my sister and stays alive!” Nervous Denver answers, “Insulted her? I asked her to marry me!” to which Rattlesnake replies, “So she was right!”
