What to Expect From Season 2 of I Am Groot

By Emily Hewitt

What trouble is Baby Groot getting into now? As Season 2 of I Am Groot premieres on September 6, D23 sat down with Kirsten Lepore, writer, director, and executive producer of I Am Groot, to discuss what’s in store for the mischievous twig.

In Season 1, audiences saw Groot burst out of his planter, learn how to walk and talk, and go on adventures. Groot was the human equivalent of around 5 years old through the first series of shorts; now he is about 6 or 7 in human years, Lepore said.

“He’s definitely got the same childlike essence,” she promised. “In the first episode, he gets a taste of parenting, so he’s growing and learning in that way. As with all kids, you still have moments where they act like a tiny toddler, and then you have moments where they’re wise beyond their years.”

When first creating Baby Groot’s character for I Am Groot, Lepore spoke with James Gunn, executive producer of the shorts and director of the Guardians of the Galaxy films, to make sure she stayed true to the character he created. Gunn’s best nuggets of wisdom about Groot were that he is a “bad baby” and an “emoji guy.”

“He has a very simple face, and all he has to do is strike a pose and you understand that face—like what an emoji is,” Lepore said.

Lepore had the opportunity to develop Groot’s personality further in the series, much of which is inspired by funny stories from the childhoods of herself, story editors, and storyboard artists. The goal for Season 2 was to make it even more specific and personal, allowing audiences to relate even more to Groot’s universal childlike essence.

“For example, the ice cream truck episode [in Season 2], at least for me, ripped a page out of my childhood,” Lepore said about Episode 4 when Groot frantically scours the spaceship for coins as an intergalactic ice cream truck approaches. “It’s so relatable.”

Early on, Lepore and her team came up with about 30 one- to two-sentence loglines for stories, and from those, the executives chose five to develop into the shorts of Season 2. She snuck a logline into the pile in which Groot gets an actual, functioning nose—she thought it was so ridiculous that the executives would never go for it. Lo and behold, it is now Episode 2 of Season 2.

“They really let me run with my weird ideas, which felt very good, and I feel very supported in that way,” Lepore said.

One episode that really developed from a small idea into a fleshed-out concept was the snow day episode of Season 2. It started out with Groot just playing in a snowsuit. Along the way, an antagonist snowman was born, and the plot coalesced.

“By the end, I think it became one of our favorite episodes,” Lepore said. Each new element, as it was layered on, including the music, “felt like it just kept adding another cherry on top. That one, I think, got even better than we ever imagined it was going to be.”

Another important decision that goes hand in hand with the plot is the unique location in each episode. It was important to Lepore to have the spaceship make several appearances in the series to keep the show grounded, while also adding new locations.

Lepore, who comes from a stop-motion animation background, noted that the snow day episode was particularly fun to watch being created via CGI. “We really got to take advantage of that medium in having all these interactions with the snow,” Lepore said. “We tried to make [the locations] a little more diverse and change it up from the first season. So, he’s kind of been all over.”

5 Fantastic Things to Watch This Weekend Presented by State Farm®

By Courtney Potter

Can you believe that Labor Day Weekend is upon us? With any luck, you might have some extra time in your schedule for some additional merriment from around the worlds of Disney. To that end, we’ve created a mini Disney+ watch list featuring titles, from Walt Disney Animation Studios and Disney and Pixar, that have to do with work… whistling while you do it; striving towards a dream career—you name it, and there’s a Disney animated hit that’s covered it. (And these are only five examples!) So take a break from your own labors and enjoy:

In an image from Walt Disney Animation Studios’ Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, the dwarfs are seen marching along a hillside carrying their tools for mining. They’re in the middle of a song. A large tree can be seen behind them.

Walt Disney Animation Studios’ Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs
The first feature film for The Walt Disney Company has one song literally titled “Whistle While You Work,” and another with the lyric “Heigh-ho, heigh-ho, it’s off to work we go”… so, despite the fact that the main plot doesn’t have much to do with labor, we couldn’t not include this on our weekend watchlist! For those who need a refresher, the 1937 film follows a beautiful girl (voiced by Disney Legend Adriana Caselotti) who takes refuge in the forest in the house of the Seven Dwarfs to hide from her stepmother, the wicked Queen (voiced by Lucille La Verne). Adventure, music, and romance, as it so often does, ensue.

In an image from Walt Disney Animation Studios’ The Princess and the Frog, Tiana (voiced by Disney Legend Anika Noni Rose) is working at a restaurant and serving several customers seated at a counter to her left. She holds a tray aloft with her right hand, over her head, and is handing a plate to a customer with her left hand. She’s wearing a yellow dress and a white apron. Diner-type items can be seen on the counter, and the kitchen can be seen behind and to her right.

Walt Disney Animation Studios’ The Princess and the Frog
This one is particularly prescient, considering that the new restaurant Tiana’s Palace opens at Disneyland Park in just a few days. (Plus, Tiana’s Bayou Adventure is set to open at both Disneyland and Walt Disney World Resort in 2024!) The 2009 animated hit is a modern twist on the classic fairy tale… Tiana (voiced by Disney Legend Anika Noni Rose) dreams of someday owning her own restaurant. When she meets a frog prince desperate to be human, a pivotal kiss takes the pair on an uproarious adventure through the mystical Louisiana bayous. Entrepreneurship, jazz, and magic—what more could you want for Labor Day viewing?!

In an image from Disney and Pixar’s Ratatouille, Remi (voiced by Patton Oswalt) is standing on the edge of a large soup pot, holding up a wooden spoon and smelling its contents; his eyes are closed, and he has a pleased look on his face. He’s also holding a sprig of parsley in his left hand.

Disney and Pixar’s Ratatouille
Ever wanted to work in a restaurant kitchen? Creating unique, delicious dishes of your own design? Remy (voiced by Patton Oswalt) did—and he got his chance in this 2009 film. This very adorable and very determined young rat (yup, he’s a rat!) dreams of becoming a world-renowned chef, despite his large family’s wishes to the contrary. Eventually, Remy finds himself at Gusteau’s, one of Paris’ finest restaurants, established by his culinary hero. This sets off a rollicking chain of events involving “garbage boy” Linguini (voiced by Lou Romano)—who inadvertently discovers Remy’s amazing talents—as well as Collette (voiced by Janeane Garofalo), the restaurant’s only female cook.

In a still from Walt Disney Animation Studios’ Zootopia, from left to right, Nick Wilde (voiced by Jason Bateman) and Judy Hopps (voiced by Ginnifer Goodwin) are in a darkened room; Nick is standing next to Judy, who’s sitting at a desk looking at a computer that’s just off screen. They both look intrigued regarding whatever contents the computer screen is showing them.

Walt Disney Animation Studios’ Zootopia
The story at the center of this 2016 hit is that of Judy Hopps (voiced by Ginnifer Goodwin), a kind-hearted gal who leaves the quiet confines of her hometown for the fast-paced, all-animal city of Zootopia—where she becomes the first bunny on the police force. Determined to prove herself, she jumps at the chance to solve a new case… even if it means partnering with charming scam-artist fox Nick Wilde (voiced by Jason Bateman). For an extra dose of Zootopia fun, check out the Disney+ limited series Zootopia+!

In an image from Disney and Pixar’s Soul, Joe Gardner (voiced by Jamie Foxx) is walking briskly across a busy New York City street, within a striped crosswalk. He’s wearing a turtleneck, slacks, and a hat and is holding a briefcase in one hand and a phone up to his ear with the other. Cabs and other cars are whizzing by him on either side of the street.

Disney and Pixar’s Soul
Pianist and part-time music teacher Joe Gardner (voiced by Jamie Foxx) lands the gig of a lifetime at the best jazz club in New York City. Despite also having been offered the chance to teach full-time, Joe decides to chase his dream—only to wind up, thanks to one big misstep, in a truly fantastical place called The Great Before. There, he teams up with wisecracking soul 22 (voiced by Tina Fey) to not only find the answers to some of life’s biggest questions, but also figure out whether Joe can find his way back to, well, life.

Disney World’s “Once Upon A Wish Party” Celebrates World Princess Week and the 150,000th Disney Wish

Walt Disney World is known for its magic and one of its most enchanting evenings took place last week when the resort held Once Upon A Wish Party—one of the company’s largest-wish granting events ever.

The resort welcomed more than 50 remarkable wish kids and their families, and these honored guests were able to do meet and greets with many Disney princesses, which is a popular wish via Make-A-Wish.

The event was also extra special for Mikayla, the 150,000th Disney wish. Mikayla—a 17-year-old from Palm Beach Gardens who started her battle with cancer three years ago—wished to perform at Disney, and she did so in royal style by singing a few Disney classics, including “Beauty and the Beast” alongside Belle and The Beast.

Josh D’Amaro, chairman of Disney Parks, Experiences and Products, poses for a photo with Mikayla, a 17-year-old Make-A-Wish kid who fulfilled her dream of performing at Walt Disney World Resort.

“Granting wishes is some of the most important work that we do at Disney,” Josh D’Amaro, Chairman of Disney Parks, Experiences and Products, said. “We’re humbled that so many wish kids choose Disney—it’s an honor, and we don’t take that responsibility lightly. It tells us what our brand and the Disney experience mean to people.”

The celebration proclaimed wish kids as royalty for the day and had them meet more than 30 Disney princesses and characters. They also had a tea party in Wonderland and danced at a royal ball. Disney Publishing gave out an array of books while shopDisney delivered Disney Princess dresses, Mickey Mouse and Minnie Mouse ear headbands, wands, tiaras, and much more to surprised families.

Disney and Make-A-Wish have had a strong bond over the last four decades with Disney being the largest wish granter in the world for Make-A-Wish. In fact, one out of every two wishes granted in the U.S. through Make-A-Wish has been a Disney wish.

Leslie Motter—Make-A-Wish America President and CEO—added that “as the number one wish granter for our organization, Disney is helping deliver joy when it’s needed most.”

“Through their stories and characters, Disney is creating unforgettable wish-granting experiences like Once Upon A Wish Party that allow families the space to create happy new memories together that I know will last a lifetime,” Motter said.
