If you find yourself seeing spots this Friday, January 22, don’t be alarmed—it’s National Polka Dot day! And when Disney fans think about polka dots, the first thing that comes to mind simply has to be Minnie Mouse: fashionista, style icon, and Mickey’s best girl.

Our friends at Disney Consumer Products are celebrating Minnie’s signature style with an interactive fashion and art installation in Los Angeles, Minnie Rocks the Dots, which kicks off this weekend; but you can #RockTheDots now with this exclusive Minnie’s Bow-Toons short from our friends at Disney Junior. Three brand-new shorts will premiere Friday, January 22, on Disney Channel (at 7:55 a.m. ET/PT, 8:25 a.m. ET/PT, and 8:55 a.m. ET/PT) and repeat on Disney Junior in the afternoon.

In “Happy Campers,” Minnie and Daisy take the twins, Millie and Melody, on a camping adventure. Everything goes wrong until Minnie discovers a new way for the girls to sleep under the stars.

Disney Releases Earn 15 Oscar® Nominations

The envelope, please! Nominations for the 88th Oscars® were announced at the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Science’s Samuel Goldwyn Theater in Beverly Hills, California, this morning, and Disney releases received 15 nominations, including five for Star Wars: The Force Awakens, two for Disney•Pixar’s animated feature Inside Out, and six for the Disney-released Bridge of Spies, a Dreamworks Studio production directed by Steven Spielberg.

Excited we were that Lucasfilm’s Star Wars: The Force Awakens earned nods in five categories, including Visual Effects and Original Score. “I’m deeply honored and grateful to the Academy for this recognition. It’s been a privilege and a joy to revisit the Star Wars galaxy and to work with the brilliant director J.J. Abrams on this very special film,” composer John Williams said upon receiving the nomination—his 50th. We think the Force will be strong on Oscar Sunday!

780w-463h_Oscar-Nominations-2

We jumped for joy over the fact that Disney•Pixar’s animated feature Inside Out was nominated in two categories, Animated Feature Film and Original Screenplay. The film’s director, Pete Docter, and producer, Jonas Rivera, made the following statement this morning: “We are beyond grateful to the Academy for honoring us with these nominations—especially in a year with so many fantastic movies. On behalf of the cast, crew and team at Pixar we would like to say… THANK YOU! We’re lucky to work at a studio that allows us to make movies that are colorful, fun, personal—and emotional.”

780w-463h_Oscar-Nominations-3

It’s just, well, super that Sanjay’s Super Team has been nominated in the Animated Short Film category. “It is a great honor to be recognized by the Academy with a nomination for our short, Sanjay’s Super Team. This is an incredibly personal, but also otherworldly, story that was as much a labor of love for our crew as it was for myself. Making a film about my own childhood, and exploring the space that separates a young boy from his traditional immigrant father, meant that everyone really had to trust my vision, and the result is a truly beautiful film. So I share this honor with the crew, my true Super Team,” director Sanjay Patel said.

Disney’s live-action Cinderella also earned a nomination in costume design for triple-Oscar winner Sandy Powell’s stunning creations.

Heigh Ho! Snow White Comes to Digital HD

Walt Disney was first exposed to the Brothers Grimm’s Snow White—about a fair-skinned maiden, her seven short-statured friends, and a very wicked stepmother—as a teenage boy, when he attended a screening of a 1917 silent film treatment of the fairy tale at Kansas City’s Convention Hall. The story became Disney’s first full-length animated film, 1937’s Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, which took a full three years (and more than 750 artists) to produce. It was a creative, as well as technological, triumph… and the rest, as they say, is history.

On January 19, Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainment debuts Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs on Digital HD and Disney Movies Anywhere for the very first time! Plus, a new high definition Blu-ray™, which includes the Digital HD copy, hits store shelves February 2… and it’s all marking the launch of The Walt Disney Signature Collection—special releases of Disney’s most groundbreaking films.

This edition of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs is full of new bonus features, including The Fairest Facts of Them All, a clever look at seven details you might not know about the classic (hosted by Disney’s Descendants star Sofia Carson, who played Evie, daughter of the Evil Queen herself), and @DisneyAnimation: Designing Disney’s First Princess, where current Disney artists examine how Snow White has guided the look of other Disney characters.

D23 recently sat down with longtime Disney animator Mark Henn—who created an exclusive “DisneyGraph” downloadable image included in the Snow White digital release—to discuss how the film continues to hold significance… for himself, for today’s audiences, and for generations to come.

“There’s such a simplicity and an elegance in its storytelling, and the art form.”

D23: Thanks for chatting with us, Mark! First off, can you talk a little bit about the “DisneyGraph” that you recently created?

Mark Henn (MH): Well, the drawing that I created, it’s the original drawing that I did based on [the character] Snow White, and it’s available for anybody who downloads or buys the digital copy of the film. It’s kind of an “old-meets-new” [piece]—older characters and new technology. It’s kind of a neat idea. Just the fact that they asked me to be a part of this and create this “DisneyGraph” is a real honor, and I was very pleased to have been asked to help make [this release] extra special!

780w-463h_snow-white-signature-collection-1

D23: Sounds great… Speaking of the character, did you find yourself particularly drawn (pun intended) to Snow White over the years?

MH: Yes, definitely! For me, I grew up in Ohio—and I grew up as a small boy dreaming of working for The Walt Disney Company as an animator. I didn’t actually see Snow White for the first time until I was in high school. By then, it was well in my brain that that was my dream—to eventually work here as an animator, but to see Snow White, to see the first feature, and be old enough to really appreciate it… I had a rudimentary understanding of how animation worked, so I could appreciate not only the film for film’s sake, but I could also appreciate the artistry and the craftsmanship that the animators and all the artists put in to the film. It’s our first. It’s Disney’s first feature, and it’s just a wonderful film.

D23: Why do you think it still resonates so much with audiences, all these years later?

MH: Well, that’s a big question—and I suppose every person you’d ask would give you a different answer… There’s certainly a quality of innocence to the film, in a sense. Not that its squeaky clean—I mean, you’ve got an evil witch; a stepmother with some anger management issues [laughs]. But there’s such a simplicity and an elegance in its storytelling and the art form,.

And just in terms as a piece of entertainment, it’s very easy on the eyes. You can just sit down, watch it, and it just sucks you in and takes you on this amazing journey with this young girl for a little over an hour or so. It’s a really very emotional story. It’s very gentle in that way. It has its moments of [bigger] impact—but you just get to sit back and enjoy what the filmmakers put on the screen, and the story that they’re telling. I think it’s simple, clean—just an elegant film…

780w-463h_snow-white-signature-collection-2

D23: Is there anything else you’d like our readers to know about Snow White, and this Digital HD release?

MH: I would just say, take the time and watch the movie again. Just be reminded of how good it is… Sit down, watch it with your kids, watch it with your grandkids—and just be reminded and enjoy it.

Disney Details: Sit Back and Imagine

Imagine an image of striking contrasts—land and water, sunlight and shade. An open-air structure hovers over a sparkling pool, the extended span of its roof providing shade so calming you can’t help but while away a few minutes—or hours—in its relaxing embrace. Photographer Gary Krueger snapped this shot at Walt Disney Imagineering’s campus in Glendale, California, during a tour of the always active laboratory of the imagination, where the hard labors of dreaming up the world’s most beloved theme park experiences are as constant as the gentle breezes floating through this peaceful retreat.

It’s all in the Disney Details!

Awaken Your Adventure: 2016 Disneyland Resort Rose Parade Float

Anyone who tuned in to the 127th Rose Parade couldn’t help but notice Disneyland’s entry. Created almost entirely by volunteers, the colorful float—titled “Disneyland Diamond Celebration: Awaken Your Adventure”—was created using approximately 650,000 flowers. The theme of this year’s parade was “Find Your Adventure,” and the Disneyland Resort float honored some of the most exciting adventures awaiting guests at the Happiest Place on Earth. At the heart of the float was a sparkling re-creation of Sleeping Beauty Castle, complete with Mickey Mouse and Minnie Mouse welcoming everyone to the Disneyland Resort Diamond Celebration. Flanking the castle were two adventures that are brought to life at the Disneyland Resort: The first comes from the world of Frozen and depicts Elsa’s ice castle—straight out of Arendelle—accompanied by Anna, Elsa, Olaf, and Kristoff. A separate adventure depicted on the float jumped to hyperspace and traveled to a galaxy far, far away for a thrilling adventure dedicated to the Star Wars films and exciting new Star Wars experiences at Disneyland Park.

The appearance of the Disneyland Resort Diamond Celebration float in the 2016 Rose Parade marked the continuation of the relationship Disney has with the Tournament of Roses that began in 1938 when characters from the newly premiered Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs were prominently featured in the parade, and this year marked the 50th anniversary of Walt Disney’s appearance as Grand Marshal of the 77th Rose Parade in 1966.

Check out this video and photo gallery if you missed the Rose Parade, or just want to see the Disneyland float again in all its floral and fragrant beauty. And Happy New Year!

Coming Up Roses

Between Christmas and New Year’s Day, most of the country typically experiences a wintery wonderland of chilly white landscapes, illuminated by festive holiday lights and accented with the scent of telltale aromas from busy fireplaces. But in Southern California, the sky is usually a vibrant blue, the temperatures brisk (Brrrr! It can get all the way down to 60 degrees!), and there’s the welcoming smell of freshly cut flowers in the air.

During the lull between the two holidays, many residents of the beautiful Los Angeles suburb of Pasadena quickly abandon their dreamy holiday images of snowflakes and flying reindeer and turn their attention to the work at hand: creating another breathtaking edition of the world-famous Pasadena Tournament of Roses. The Rose Parade and the Rose Bowl game, both produced by the nonprofit Pasadena Tournament of Roses Association, have become true American holiday traditions.

Beginning in the late 1930s, Disney joined forces with the tournament, starting a relationship that has flourished ever since. Not only has the Rose Parade featured numerous Disney touches through the years, but the Rose Queen and Royal Court have paid yearly visits to the Disneyland Resort since 1960, and the Resort hosts college football teams each year as the first stop on their visit to Southern California to compete in the Rose Bowl game.

Here, with images of sugar plum fairies and the sweet smells of the season wafting in from the kitchen, we take a photographic stroll through a rose garden of Disney memories… with highlights from many of the Disney and Pasadena Tournament of Roses collaborations.

780w-463h_disney-parades-look-back-1

1938
Disney’s first Rose Parade float entry appeared in 1938, to promote Disney’s new feature-length animated film, Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. The theme of the parade is “Playland Fantasies,” and the Disney float features Marge Belcher, the studio’s lovely live-action model for Snow White. Marge sits beneath a giant floral mushroom, surrounded by the seven dwarf characters who’d made their initial appearance at the premiere of the film at the Carthay Circle Theater two weeks earlier. A few years later, Marge would marry and go on to greater fame as part of the great dance duo of Gower and Marjorie Champion.

Roy E. Disney once claimed that one of his most vivid memories was attending the 1938 Rose Parade and seeing the Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs float. “I watched the whole parade standing on the hood of an old Buick in a used car lot on Colorado Boulevard that belonged to one of my dad’s best friends,” he said. “I couldn’t have been more excited that day, especially when the Snow White float went by.”

780w-463h_disney-parades-look-back-2

1955
In January of 1955, Walt and his staff send their second float to Pasadena, this time to promote another groundbreaking new production: Disneyland. Sponsored by Southern California’s popular Helms Bakery, the float is decorated with more than 7,000 pink roses and is recipient of the Judge’s Special Award for featuring some of the most iconic images from the soon-to-be opened theme park: a giant pink Sleeping Beauty Castle; a version of the Dumbo the Flying Elephant attraction; and Mickey Mouse himself, in the front. A tall balloon rising above the float introduces many in the crowd to “Disneyland,” the new wonderland to come.

780w-463h_disney-parades-look-back-3

1966
In March 1965, Mr. J. Randolph Richards, president of the 77th Annual Tournament of Roses, announces the theme for 1966—“It’s a Small World.” Just one year earlier, the Disney-designed and built attraction it’s a small world premiered to great acclaim at the UNICEF-sponsored pavilion at the 1964 New York World’s Fair and was slated to be installed into a new permanent home at Disneyland in Anaheim. Richards then announces the obvious choice for grand marshal to accompany that year’s theme: Walt Disney, who he praises as a “master showman” who has “brought joy and laughter to millions in every part of the world.”

Lillian Disney accompanies her husband to the Rose Bowl Game that followed the Parade, but it’s Walt’s best pal that rides in the grand marshal’s car with him.

Walt chooses the city of Burbank to sponsor that year’s float entitled “Our Small World of Make Believe,” feeling it is the most appropriate choice of city to represent himself and his creations. The float is designed with help from Disney Legend Bill Justice and features “an open book, a musical clef, and an artist’s palette, representing the three important elements of Disney legend: the story, the music, and the creative art work.” The float also carries 27 of Walt and Mickey’s good friends, including Goofy, Pluto, Snow White, the Seven Dwarfs, Cinderella, Aurora, Alice, the White Rabbit, Pinocchio, Honest John, Gideon, Winnie the Pooh, Mary Poppins, Peter Pan, Captain Hook, the Three Little Pigs, and the Big Bad Wolf.

780w-463h_disney-parades-look-back-4

1980
Following Walt’s fondly remembered role as grand marshal, it would take nearly 15 years for Disney to again be represented in the Rose Parade in an official capacity. The occasion is the Disneyland 25th anniversary “Family Reunion” celebration. It’s been 25 years since Disneyland was first represented in the parade, and to mark the park’s silver anniversary, Disney ironically does not contribute a float entry. Instead, Disneyland is represented by a unique pre-parade entertainment spectacular highlighted by many elements of the soon-to-be-unveiled Disneyland 25th Anniversary Parade, which would be featured daily during the park’s anniversary year.

The pre-parade show features Disney characters, fanfare trumpeters, a rolling stage featuring the word “Disneyland” spelled out in twirling mirrored letters, plus the Dixieland jazz band Firehouse Five Plus Two, led by legendary Disney animator Ward Kimball. A highlight of the pre-parade is a real steam-powered Dragon Calliope. The ornate rolling musical instrument had been part of the short-lived Mickey Mouse Club Circus at Disneyland. The calliope was repainted silver and blue and appeared in the daily 25th anniversary parade at the park. In 1981, the calliope traveled to Walt Disney World where it was featured as part of the “Tencennial” celebration, and it now resides proudly on display at the Tri-Circle-D Ranch at Disney’s Fort Wilderness Resort and Campground in Florida.

780w-463h_disney-parades-look-back-5

2000
With the dawn of the new millennium, Disney and the Rose Parade came full circle as Roy E. Disney was named grand marshal, making Walt and his nephew the only people from the same family ever to share the honor of being named grand marshal. Roy’s participation is heavily tied into the millennium and the debut of the film Fantasia/2000.

After a series of whirlwind “premieres” around the world, Roy (who was executive producer of the film) and Fantasia/2000 come home to celebrate with a West Coast premiere that takes place on New Year’s Eve at the Pasadena Civic Auditorium, followed by midnight fireworks.

780w-463h_disney-parades-look-back-6

2004
The relationship between Disney and the Rose Parade reaches new heights, literally, when millions of parade viewers worldwide get a unique preview of The Twilight Zone Tower of Terror with a parade float inspired by the soon-to-open attraction at Disney California Adventure at the Disneyland Resort.

Dubbed “A Sudden Drop In Pitch,” in keeping with the 2004 Rose Parade theme of “Music, Music, Music,” the float is the tallest in Rose Parade history at the time, with a height of nearly 100 feet. (The actual attraction is only 83 feet taller.) The float is designed to fold down to a height of less than 18 feet so that it can be taken under freeway underpasses, and it is fully animated with a rotating Sun Wheel, a shaking elevator car (complete with screaming stunt people), and pyrotechnics (only the second float at the time to ever feature fireworks).

Following the parade, the float is actually transported down to Anaheim and put on display at Disney California Adventure, where it remains for several weeks.

780w-463h_disney-parades-look-back-7

2005
With both Walt and Roy E. Disney having served as grand marshals of the Pasadena Tournament of Roses, it seemed only inevitable that someday Mickey Mouse might be accorded the same honor. On November 16, 2004, Mickey was joined on the lawn of the Wrigley Mansion (headquarters for the Pasadena Tournament of Roses) by Julie Andrews (the Honorary Ambassador of the Disneyland 50th anniversary) and Tournament of Roses President Dave Davis as they announced Mickey as grand marshal of the 2005 Tournament of Roses, featuring the “Celebrate Family” Theme. As grand marshal, Mickey represents the Tournament of Roses to a worldwide television audience in the 116th Rose Parade and tosses the coin before the 91st Rose Bowl game (not easy to do with just four fingers!).

The parade kicks off with another festive, high-energy Disney pre-show featuring a multitude of Disney characters, singers, dancers, fireworks, and a spectacular float inspired by Sleeping Beauty Castle at Disneyland.

780w-463h_disney-parades-look-back-8

2006
With the global celebration of the 50th anniversary of Disneyland continuing for 18 months, Disney’s 2006 float entry represents floral representations of all five Magic Kingdom castles from around the world: Anaheim, Orlando, Tokyo, Paris, and Hong Kong.

As it turns out, “The Most Magical Celebration on Earth” (as the float was called) is met with an unseasonably wet reception as it ventures onto famed Colorado Boulevard. Usually Disney events can count on “Walt Weather,” as insiders like to call it (a sudden clearing of the skies before a major parade or show). However, on this occasion, the typical Rose Parade weather of crisp blue skies, abundant sunshine and snow-capped mountains in the distance is replaced with a constant drizzle and slight winds.

But there have been abundant sunny and warm days since then, and if history is any indication, there will be plenty more… and many additional chapters written in the storied friendship between Disney and the Tournament of Roses.

See Some of Soccer’s Best at Walt Disney World Resort

Soccer is the world’s most popular sport—and now, it’s coming to another kind of “world,” for the second time. Several celebrated soccer stars from Latin America and Europe will be playing at the second annual Florida Cup soccer tournament, at Walt Disney World’s ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex. Elite players expected to take part include Chicharito Hernandez, the Mexican National team star playing for Bayer Leverkusen—as well as Brazilian soccer legends Ronaldinho (playing for Fluminense FC) and Renato Augusto (the reigning Brazil League MVP who leads SC Corinthians).

The action starts Sunday, January 10, with a doubleheader at ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex between Santa Fe (Colombia) and Bayer (Germany), followed by Schalke (Germany) against the Fort Lauderdale Strikers. The tourney continues through January 20 with matches taking place at other Florida venues including Boca Raton and Fort Lauderdale, in addition to Walt Disney World Resort. Tickets start at just $35 and are available for all matches at all Ticketmaster outlets (including Ticketmaster.com). Head over to floridacup.com for the complete schedule!

The 7D Returns to Disney XD This Month

“Hi-ho, hi-ho, to Season Two we go!” The second season of The 7D, a hilarious take on the Seven Dwarfs, begins on Disney XD on Saturday, January 23, at 9:30 a.m. ET/PT! Set in the world of Jollywood, the series follows the adventures of our pint-sized heroes—Happy, Bashful, Sleepy, Sneezy, Dopey, Grumpy, and Doc—as they work together to help the eccentric Queen Delightful keep her kingdom in order and fend off the Glooms, a novice warlock and witch couple who continually plot to overtake the throne.

Season Two will boast a cadre of fantastic voice guest stars, including Ozzy and Sharon Osbourne as Hildy Gloom’s (voice of Kelly Osbourne—perfect casting!) parents, the Duke and Duchess of Drear; Fran Drescher (The Nanny) as Encyclopedia Enchantica, a talking encyclopedia; comedian and author Amy Sedaris as Nocturna, the kooky keeper of nightmares; and George Takei (Star Trek, Broadway’s Allegiance) as Dr. Sweet Tooth, Jollywood’s happy-go-lucky dentist. The 7D also features the voice talents of Disney Legend Bill Farmer as Doc, Billy West (Ren & Stimpy) as Bashful, and Maurice LaMarche (Pinky and the Brain, Disney’s upcoming Zootopia) as Grumpy.

Have Oil, Will Travel: Disney Cruise Line Helps Power Trucks

As part of Disney Cruise Line’s—and The Walt Disney Company in general—commitment to minimizing waste wherever possible, their fleet of magical, memory-making ships have donated more than 60,000 gallons of used cooking oil to Bahamas Waste Management since 2011. And what does that cooking oil do? Amazingly, it helps power their fleet of vehicles in Nassau!
