Heroes & Villains: The Art of the Disney Costume Arrives at the Birmingham Museum of Art

By Walt Disney Archives Staff

Continuing a cross-country tour that launched at D23 Expo 2019, Heroes & Villains: The Art of the Disney Costume makes its Southeastern U.S. debut on February 17, when the exhibition opens at the Birmingham Museum of Art. Produced by the staff of the Walt Disney Archives, the 6,000-square-foot exhibit examines the craftsmanship and artistry of Disney costume designers, offering visitors up-close looks at more than 70 iconic costumes and props from some six decades of Disney films and television programs.

“So much has been said and documented about the incredible work of filmmakers, musicians, and animators who have brought our favorite films and TV shows to life,” says Kelsey Williams, Exhibitions Creative Lead for the Walt Disney Archives. “But we think it’s fair to say that Disney costume designers have not had their work examined, or appreciated, with the same level of attention. We’ve been excited to finally shine that spotlight with this traveling exhibition.”

Heroes & Villains: The Art of the Disney Costume marks the first Disney experience to debut at the Birmingham Museum of Art. Previous stops for the exhibit have included the Museum of Pop Culture in Seattle, Washington (in 2021), and the Henry Ford Museum of American Innovation in Dearborn, Michigan (in 2022).

Costumes designed by Jacqueline Durran for the Beast (played by Dan Stevens) and Gaston (played by Luke Evans) in Beauty and the Beast (2017), are displayed in Heroes & Villains: The Art of the Disney Costume at the Henry Ford Museum of American Innovation in 2022. Modeled by faceless mannequins, the costumes are Beast’s cream-colored shirt, green vest, and black shorts, left, and Gaston’s red military-style frock coat, right, with burnt orange vest, brown pants, and black boots.

“What’s great about producing and traveling this exhibit is that it’s flexible,” shares Matthew Adams, Manager of Exhibitions for the Walt Disney Archives. “It’s been featured in a variety of different spaces across the country, each with its own unique configurations, but the exhibit has been designed like that intentionally.”

No matter the venue or layout, costumes from some of Hollywood’s preeminent designers are on full display, including Academy Award® winners Colleen Atwood and Sandy Powell, as well as Emmy® winner Ellen Mirojnick and Emmy® nominees Eduardo Castro and Penny Rose. Their work has been worn by the likes of Nicolas Cage, Glenn Close, Angelina Jolie, Geoffrey Rush, and Disney Legend Oprah Winfrey.

“You get to see costumes from our collection up-close,” Williams explains, “which is really quite spectacular. To take in the fine detailing, the stitching, the textiles, the colorful fabrics, the costumes’ lightness or heaviness—it’s all the work of costume designers who put an incredible amount of thought, consideration, and skill into every detail you see… the elements that help shape and define who the character is.”

A close-up of a section of a costume designed by Sandy Powell for Anastasia (Holliday Grainger) in Cinderella (2015) shows silky purple fabric with big blue polka dots, slightly obscured by a mannequin’s white hand.
This costume was designed by Sandy Powell for Anastasia (Holliday Grainger) in Cinderella (2015).

Visitors will first enter “Cinderella’s Workshop,” a gallery that examines how several designers have each applied their own unique style and artistry to different interpretations of the fairy tale heroine—from Rodgers and Hammerstein’s Cinderella (1997) and Into the Woods (2014) to the ABC hit series Once Upon a Time (2011–2018) and the 2015 live-action reimagining of Walt Disney’s animated classic starring Lily James.

The “Cinderella’s Workshop” gallery is seen as presented in Heroes & Villains: The Art of the Disney Costume at the Henry Ford Museum of American Innovation in 2022. At the center is Cinderella’s blue ball gown, with a display of glass slippers and other footwear in glass cases to the left, and a display of a dozen colorful hand-drawn images, seen here too small to make out the details, on the wall behind the dress.

“It’s a really cool case study,” says Williams, “and through our gallery elements, you’ll also get to hear from the designers themselves as they explain their creative process and what they brought to their variation of the character.”

A display of numerous villain costumes on mannequins spreads out at an angle to the right and left in Heroes & Villains: The Art of the Disney Costume, as formerly presented at the Henry Ford Museum of American Innovation in 2022.

The exhibit continues upstairs, where dozens of iconic costumes are revealed in three sections: Heroes, Villains, and Spaces Between—a category reserved for the antiheroes whose fascinating journeys make them among Disney’s most complex characters.

This week’s opening in Birmingham welcomes several first-time additions to the exhibit, such as the costumes of Peter Pan and Captain Hook (Alexander Molony and Jude Law) from 2023’s Peter Pan & Wendy, the village dress worn by Belle (H.E.R.) in 2022’s Beauty and the Beast: A 30th Celebration on ABC, and the bewitching dresses donned by the Sanderson sisters (Bette Midler, Sarah Jessica Parker, and Kathy Najimy) in 2022’s Hocus Pocus 2.

Headless mannequins display three costumes designed by Salvador Pérez Jr. for the Sanderson sisters (played by Bette Midler, Sarah Jessica Parker, and Kathy Najimy) in Hocus Pocus 2 (2022). All three are floor-length gowns with capes. The dresses on the right and left are crimson, while the middle dress is green.

The Alabama premiere also marks a homecoming for Adams. “I’m personally really excited about this venue because Birmingham is where I was born and raised,” he relates, thinking back to school field trips to the museum. “So it’s really a full-circle moment to have a project I’m working on follow me back to my hometown.”

The significance of exhibiting treasures from the Archives’ collections isn’t lost on Adams. “We can take them to places where there traditionally is not a big Disney experience, such as a theme park,” he continues. “We can take them into communities where there’s a high affinity for Disney. So it’s been rewarding to go to those places and share a little bit of Disney magic for fans who would otherwise need to go far to experience it.”

Heroes & Villains: The Art of the Disney Costume is on display at the Birmingham Museum of Art in Alabama from February 17 through August 18, 2024. Stay tuned to D23.com as future venues are announced.

A costume designed by Anna B. Sheppard for Maleficent (played by Angelina Jolie) in Maleficent (2014), is displayed in Heroes & Villains: The Art of the Disney Costume at the Henry Ford Museum of American Innovation® in 2022. Surrounding the Maleficent costume are many other displays of outfits and related items in a large gallery space.

Get the Latest on FX’s Shōgun With an Extended Trailer

By Cecilia Sarantopoulos

FX unveiled a new look at the highly anticipated limited-series Shōgun during Sunday’s Big Game. Adapted from James Clavell’s 1975 novel of the same name, the historical drama immerses viewers in 1600 feudal Japan, and portrays the onset of a pivotal civil war.

The 30-second teaser directed viewers to a new extended trailer for the series, which debuts on Hulu and FX on Tuesday, February 27.

You can watch it here:

Shōgun follows the story of John Blackthorne, an English pilot shipwrecked in 17th-century Japan. Blackthorne gets caught up in Japan’s political intrigue—fighting to stay alive and, eventually, return home. During his journey, he makes friends, falls in love, and adapts to samurai life… but he also gets pulled into the power struggles among Japanese leaders.

In a promotional image for FX’s Shōgun, Hiroyuki Sanada, portrayed by Yoshii Toranga, stands at the center of the image wearing traditional Japanese armor. Behind him, a lush forest and army tents create the backdrop, while sporadic torches cast an eerie, mysterious glow.

The action-packed Shōgun features an acclaimed Japanese cast and delves into themes of treachery, devotion, fear, greed, power, deceit, passion, and destiny—all while portraying the human spirit in its most vulnerable and resilient form.

Hiroyuki Sanada, also an executive producer, plays Yoshii Toranga, a pivotal figure in both the novel and the limited series. Toranga finds himself embroiled in a life-or-death struggle as adversaries from the Council of Regents conspire against him. In contending with them, Toranga joins forces with Blackthorne. Toda Mariko, portrayed by Anna Sawai, bridges the language barrier between the two, but is often challenged to prove her loyalty to Toranga.

Against the backdrop of a nation on the brink of upheaval, Shōgun unfolds a tale of courage and resilience in the face of overwhelming odds. With each twist and turn, the series immerses viewers in a rich tapestry of Japanese culture, tradition, and the timeless struggle for power and redemption.

Big News for Fans of Abbott Elementary, Percy Jackson, Grey’s Anatomy, and More

By Zach Johnson

The Television Critics Association’s Winter Press Tour continued Saturday in Pasadena, California, where Craig Erwich, President of Disney Television Group, shared a slew of major (and exciting) updates for fans of series and specials spanning ABC Entertainment, Disney Branded Television, Freeform, and Hulu Originals. But first, Abbott Elementary’s own Mr. Johnson (William Stanford Davis) appeared onstage to announce that ABC has renewed the hit comedy series from Warner Bros. Television and 20th Television for a fourth season!

“You know, I’ve held many jobs in my lifetime—over 400, in fact. And today, I am adding another one to my resume because I’m here to announce to all of you impressive folks out here in the audience that Abbott Elementary will be back in business for Season 4,” Stanford Davis said while in character as the beloved janitor. “That’s pretty impressive, huh? I guess the camera crew wanted to get another chance to witness my janitorial prowess.”

Before a Q&A with Erwich, ABC and the Television Academy announced that The Emmy® Awards will return to the network, airing live from the Peacock Theater at L.A. LIVE in Los Angeles on Sunday, September 15, at 8 p.m. ET/5 p.m. PT. A host and producers will be announced at a later date. The live show is set to air on ABC and stream the next day on Hulu.

Grey’s Anatomy will return with its landmark 20th season on Thursday, March 14, at 9 p.m. ET/PT on ABC, streaming the next day on Hulu. ABC revealed Jessica Capshaw will return as a guest star, reprising her role as Dr. Arizona Robbins, and Alex Landi will return as a guest star, reprising his role as Dr. Nico Kim. In addition, Natalie Morales will head to Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital as Monica Beltran, a pediatric surgeon whose pragmatism and levelheadedness have made her one of the best in her field. Her willingness to push boundaries can be admirable and aggravating, but it’s always aimed at providing top-quality care to her patients. Freddy Miyares will also join the cast in a recurring role as Dorian, an intelligent, warm, and likable patient who sustained a serious accident and is struggling with his future.

“We’re going to have a tremendous amount of fanfare well-deserved for Grey’s Anatomy this year when it comes on next month,” Erwich said. “I think the show is as creatively strong as it’s ever been. It is not just a delight for the viewers who are watching it today, but it’s fueling growth for our streaming platforms.” That’s no understatement: In 2023, Grey’s Anatomy was the No. 1 show on Disney+ globally with over 1 billion hours streamed. “This show is fueling and will continue to fuel growth and engagement on our platforms for decades,” Erwich said. “Next month, when Grey’s returns, the full Grey’s library will be available to Bundle subscribers. This is the first time all 20 seasons will be available in one place, creating a seamless experience for longtime viewers and new generations of fans.”

Not only has ABC renewed The Bachelorette, airing this summer, but it has greenlit The Golden Bachelorette, airing this fall. Both series will stream the next day on Hulu, and additional details (including casting) will be announced at a later date. Meanwhile, two of ABC’s fan-favorite game shows, Celebrity Family Feud and Jeopardy! Masters, were renewed for new seasons, airing later this year, and the 2024 Rock & Roll Hall of Fame ceremony will once again stream live on Disney+; a special will air on ABC at a later date, available on Hulu the next day. Mary J. Blige, Mariah Carey, Cher, the Dave Matthews Band, Eric B. & Rakim, Foreigner, Peter Frampton, Jane’s Addiction, Kool & the Gang, Lenny Kravitz, Oasis, Sinead O’Connor, Ozzy Osbourne, Sade, and A Tribe Called Quest are the nominees for induction.

The black Goosebumps logo

Erwich also announced that Disney Branded Television greenlit a second season of Goosebumps for Disney+. The new eight-episode installment will feature a brand-new story, setting, and cast based upon R.L Stine’s bestselling Scholastic book series of the same name. In Season 2, teenage siblings will discover a threat within their home, setting off a chain of events that unravel a profound mystery. As they delve into the unknown, the siblings will find themselves entangled in the story of five teenagers who mysteriously vanished in 1994.

“Audiences everywhere fell in love with the series’ chills, thrills, heart, and humor, making it one of Disney Branded Television’s most-watched shows of last year,” said Ayo Davis, President of Disney Branded Television. “We can’t wait to dive deeper into the brilliant mind of R.L. Stine, and to collaborate once again with Sony Pictures Television, Scholastic Entertainment, and our fantastic creative team to bring an entirely new mystery to Disney+ for Season 2.”

The word ZOMBIES is written in green capital letters and outlined in white and pink. Below it the words The and Series are written in white capital letters, set in a pink and green box, surrounded by doodles of brains, swirls, lightning bolts, crowns, and slime. The word RE-ANIMATED is written in purple capital letters and is bordered by similar doodles.

Davis then shared some breaking news from Seabrook: Disney Branded Television has greenlit ZOMBIES 4 (working title), with production set to begin next month in New Zealand. Meg Donnelly and Milo Manheim will return as Addison and Zed, respectively, and also executive produce. After detailing how Disney Branded Television is “developing a new pipeline of movies and multicams that lean heavily into comedy and music,” Davis added, “These movies continue to be so incredibly successful that we are building out the franchise with our first-ever ZOMBIES animated series, which will launch this summer, truly giving us an opportunity to invite brand new audiences into this fun and musical world.”

Last week, fans of Percy Jackson and the Olympians received a gift from the Gods when Disney Branded Television renewed the series for a second season on Disney+. “It is an epic tale, filled with courage and resilience, imagination, and adventure, and one where the human spirit triumphs against all odds. Now, what could be more Disney than that?” Davis asked onstage Saturday. “This show is produced by our partners at 20th Television, and the second season of Percy Jackson and the Olympians will find Percy and his friends heading off on a new quest based on The Sea of Monsters, which is the second installment of Rick Riordan’s bestselling book series. I’m pleased to share that Rick, along with [his wife], Becky Riordan, will continue to serve as executive producers, and we are so grateful for their incredible partnership in helping us create a truly faithful and authentic adaptation.”

Chris Houghton (left) wears a denim jacket over a black T-shirt. Shane Houghton (right) wears glasses and a gray sweater. Both brothers have mustaches and are smiling.

After hyping up the first-ever Big City Greens movie, coming this summer, Davis then shared that Chris Houghton and Shane Houghton—who created and executive produce Disney Channel’s hit animated series—have struck a multiyear producing deal with Disney Branded Television. Under the deal, they will produce animated projects with Disney Television Animation studio and provide opportunities to develop live-action projects within Disney Branded Television for linear and streaming platforms. The deal also includes development opportunities for adult animation projects with 20th Television Animation. “We’re very excited about that opportunity, and very grateful to Ayo and the whole team for signing up for more Houghton Brothers stuff,” Shane said. Whether their audience is kids or adults, he continued, “We have always focused on just telling really funny stories.”

Bitsy, Sparks, Ginny, and Buddy—a quartet of masked kittens wearing colorful, tight superhero suits—stand on a large boulder in a scene from Season 2 of Superkitties.

Disney Branded Television has also ordered the third seasons of hit animated series SuperKitties and Pupstruction ahead of their respective Season 2 debuts. “With their adorable characters and heartfelt adventures, these two series have clearly struck a chord with our preschool audience,” Davis said. “Both series exude teamwork, optimism, friendship, and resilience, and feature some pretty catchy music—just some of the signature qualities that make our Disney Junior programming a hit with kids and families alike.”

Nell Jackson, a redheaded woman played by Louisa Harland, wears a black hat, a tan coat, a white shirt, a gray scarf, an open red and blue vest, red pants, and brown boots. She is standing in front of a carriage in the woods, and she is holding a gun in her hand.

Next, Louisa Harland announced that the Disney+ Original series Renegade Nell will debut with all episodes on Friday, March 29. The eight-part action-adventure fantasy series is written and created by BAFTA Award winner Sally Wainwright and centers on Nell Jackson (Harland), a quick-witted and courageous young woman who finds herself framed for murder and unexpectedly becomes the most notorious outlaw in 18th century England. When a magical spirit called Billy Blind (Nick Mohammed) appears, Nell realizes her destiny is bigger than she ever imagined. Renegade Nellalso stars Frank Dillane as Charles Devereux, Alice Kremelberg as Sofia Wilmot, Ényì Okoronkwo as Rasselas, Jake Dunn as Thomas Blancheford, Bo Bragason as Roxy Trotter, and Florence Keen as George Trotter, Pip Torrens as Lord Blancheford and Craig Parkinson as Sam Trotter, with Joely Richardson as Lady Eularia Moggerhangar and Adrian Lester as Robert Hennessey, Earl of Poynton. Renegade Nell “is a family show, and it has every element under the sun involved,” said Harland. “There’s comedy, adventure, fantasy, and magic. It’s surprisingly moving at times.”

ABC News Studios, in partnership with NEON and Network Entertainment, offered a first look at BRATS, a feature-length documentary looking at the iconic films of the 1980s that shaped a generation and the narrative that took hold when their young stars were branded the Brat Pack. Writer and director Andrew McCarthy—himself a member of the aforementioned group—appeared onstage, where he recalled how the New York article that branded him and his peers “had such a profound effect on my career. A magazine article came out on Tuesday, and by Friday, the entire nation was using the phrase Brat Pack. It was a life-changing kind of thing. We felt suddenly unseen. I felt like I lost control of the narrative of my career.” Throughout the documentary, McCarthy crisscrosses the country to meet up with some of the stars of those beloved films, including, among others, Rob Lowe, Demi Moore, Ally Sheedy, Emilio Estevez, Jon Cryer, Lea Thompson, and Timothy Hutton, as well as key members of production, including directors, casting directors, screenwriters, and producers. He also sits down for his first conversation with writer David Blum, who fatefully coined the term Brat Pack in his New York cover story.

Everything We Know About Percy Jackson and the Olympians Season 2

By Zach Johnson

We have an important message to share—and it's not from Hermes!

ICYMI, Bob Iger, CEO of The Walt Disney Company, recently announced that Disney Branded Television's Percy Jackson and the Olympians has been renewed for a second season on Disney+! The next chapter will follow Percy Jackson (Walker Scobell), Annabeth Chase (Leah Sava Jeffries), and Grover Underwood (Aryan Simhadri) as they embark on a new adventure based on The Sea of Monsters—the second installment of Rick Riordan's best-selling Percy Jackson and the Olympians book series, published by Disney Hyperion.

Heading into Season 2, Jonathan E. Steinberg—the series' co-creator and executive producer—said they will follow a similar formula in adapting Riordan's source material. "I think the goal is to take the book and find its soul, and the things that make the experience what it is for a reader, and then try to plant that in the ground a little bit and let it grow into something else," he said Saturday during the Television Critics Association's Winter Press Tour in Pasadena, Calif. "I think we were successful in engineering that in Season 1."

From left to right: Jonathan E. Steinberg, Dan Shotz and Walker Scobell sit on a Percy Jackson and the Olympians panel during the Television Critics Association's Winter Press Tour. Scobell is speaking to the crowd as Steinberg and Shotz look at him and smile.

"People are obviously very excited that we’re keeping very true to the books and honoring Rick’s work," added executive producer Dan Shotz. "At the same time, they’re as excited about all of the new things that are being brought to this, which is really rewarding for us."

Steinberg confirmed that "a couple of scripts" have already been written for Season 2, adding that "they're in really good shape." However, he noted, "To boot up this machine again is an undertaking. There are a lot of trains leaving the station, all at the same time."

Wanting to capitalize on the franchise's momentum, the cast and crew hope to begin production on Season 2 "as soon as possible," Steinberg said. "I think we all feel the demand and response for people wanting to see more of this. But we want to do it right and make sure that the second season of the show lives up to—or surpasses—the first."

From left to right: Dan Shotz, Walker Scobell, Leah Sava Jeffries, and Aryan Simhadri sit on a Percy Jackson and the Olympians panel during the Television Critics Association's Winter Press Tour. Simhadri is speaking as the others smile and look ahead.

And if the cast gets their way, fans will see a few famous faces joining the cast. "Me and Walker, we really want Christopher Judge to play Atlas; he's the guy who plays Kratos in God of War," Simhardi said, adding that Judge "has that titan energy" required for a god who holds up the sky. Scobell and Jeffries agreed they want Zendaya to play Athena, the goddess of war, and Scobell also had someone in mind for the god of the sun: "I was watching The Hunger Games recently, and I thought Sam Claflin would be a cool Apollo."

The first season of Percy Jackson and the Olympians is now streaming on Disney+.
