Walt Disney feeds the live model for Faline who, along with a fawn named Bambi, lived at the Disney Studio for animators to study, courtesy of the state of Maine. Other animals brought to the studio to inspire the on-screen stars of Bambi included skunks, ducks, and rabbits, but there was no need to ship in an owl model—an owl resided in a tree outside the window of one of the Disney artists. “We were trying to do something that had not been done before,” animator Marc Davis noted, “which was to do animals that were caricatures but at the same time moved realistically.”
