Who Killed Cock Robin

Who Killed Cock Robin is Released

The story of Cock Robin was published as early as 1744 in an English songbook as Death and Burial of Poor Cock Robin, which ends with all the birds of the air “a-sighing and a-sobbing, when they heard the bell toll” at his funeral. This may seem like an odd choice for a Walt Disney cartoon, but nevertheless, Who Killed Cock Robin? was released as a Silly Symphony on this day in 1935, but not as a sad tale of woe. Rather Disney and his staff decided to wing it a bit and make it a musical comedy, concluding with the confession by Cupid that said, “I shot Cock Robin, but Robin isn’t dead. He fell for little Jenny Wren and landed on his head.” And thus the Mae West-like Jenny Wren brings the crooning Cock Robin to, so they can live happily ever after.
