In 1935, The Tortoise and the Hare raced into theaters, retelling the classic story of persistence besting speed. Cocky Max Hare was in a big race against the slow and steady Toby Tortoise, and the Silly Symphony not only won the hearts of audience, but the Academy Award® for Best Cartoon as well. On this day in 1936, the tortoise and the hare were competing again, but this time in a boxing ring in the sequel Toby Tortoise Returns. The audience for the big match was filled with an all-star cartoon cast of characters from other Disney featurettes and Silly Symphonies. Jenny Wren from Who Killed Cock Robin?, the three little pigs and Elmer Elephant are just a few who were on hand to witness Toby’s second victory.
