G’day! On this day in 1990, The Rescuers Down Under was released in theaters. This sequel to The Rescuers debuted 13 years after the original film and reunited animated film stars Bernard and Miss Bianca, along with their real-life voices, actors Bob Newhart and Eva Gabor. If you’ve noticed that the above image is not of either in that film (it’s because we thought we’d double up today’s This Day in Disney. On this day in 1990, on the bill with The Rescuers Down Under, the 25-minute featurette The Prince and the Pauper also made its debut. When this double feature was originally released, an additional 10 minutes of intermission animation was included to tie the two films together. The Prince and the Pauper retells the classic story of two individuals from very different backgrounds, who happen to both look exactly alike. In this version, both the prince and the pauper are portrayed by Mickey Mouse, doubling his talents for a dual role. The original story by Mark Twain was first published in 1881, and has been retold in countless films and television shows, including a 1962 three-part episode of Walt Disney’s Wonderful World of Color. Hope you’ve enjoyed today’s daily double.
