Tarzan, based on the classic tale Tarzan of the Apes by Edgar Rice Burroughs, tells the famous story of a boy who is orphaned in the African jungle and raised by a family of gorillas. Glen Keane, the Disney animator who designed the character of Tarzan, drew his inspiration from his teenage son, Max, a skilled skateboarder and snowboarder. As a result, Tarzan seems to, in the words of Disney Legend Dave Smith, “surf through the trees.” The last in a series of films created during what would later be referred to as a second golden era of Disney animation, which took place between 1989 and 1999, Tarzan grossed nearly $450,000,0000 worldwide.
