With an emphatic “hi-ho,” Captain Donald keeps time for his nephews, Huey, Duey, and Louie, as they paddle aboard a little brown schooner in Sea Scouts, a Donald Duck short released on this day in 1939. As any Donald Duck fan worth his weight in feathers knows, it isn’t long before something — and just about everything — goes awry. In this case, Donald’s plans for a nice trip with his nephews are thrown overboard as the young ducks struggle to hoist the sail, weigh the anchor, and even stay awake. These soon become the least of Donald’s worries, however, when a decidedly ravenous shark shows up for a snack. Sea Scouts was director Dick Lundy’s first Donald Duck short; he would go on to direct several more shorts before leaving the Disney studio in 1943.
