It was on this day in 1928 that the Oswald the Lucky Rabbit cartoon short Neck ‘n’ Neck was released in theaters. When Oswald takes a lovely lady rabbit out for a ride in his old jalopy, he soon finds himself racing a chasing police car. When the film was released, Walt didn’t own Oswald and therefore Disney didn’t own any prints or negatives of the cartoons. Therefore, when The Walt Disney Company finally claimed ownership of the Oswald cartoons more than 80 years after they were created, it began a worldwide search to track down as many Oswald cartoons as possible. Some came from 16mm home movie prints, some from foreign film archives and some from versions that were cut and resequenced in the 1930s. Sadly, as of today, Neck ‘n’ Neck seems to be one of the lost cartoons, and Disney doesn’t believe there are any prints in existence.
