In the hilarious Mr. Duck Steps Out, Donald learns a valuable lesson: That when it comes to love, two is company and three is a crowd — especially when three is in the form of Huey, Dewey, and Louie, Donald’s irascible trio of nephews. In the short, Donald is first seen at the height of happiness, wearing his finest suit and dancing giddily around his home in anticipation of his first date with Daisy Duck. Just as he’s about to open the door and embark on a night of pure romance, his three resourceful nephews appear on the scene, clearly ready to accompany Donald for the evening — and to wreak havoc on his plans. After Donald locks them in their room, the nephews do what any tykes worth their weight in rambunctiousness would do — they saw their way out of the house and arrive at Daisy’s house first! Donald buys them off with ice cream — a successful gambit, if only for a matter of seconds. The short concludes with Donald and Daisy in a dizzying dance that ends only once both have collided with a wall and are knocked out — if only temporarily. This terpsichorean trauma has an unexpected result: Daisy is utterly smitten. Mr. Duck Steps Out marks the first appearance of Daisy Duck, though she had appeared as Donna Duck in Don Donald in 1937. She went on to make 14 film appearances as the object of Donald’s affection.
