On this day in 1938, a Silly Symphony cartoon short was released that was particularly silly. Mother Goose Goes Hollywood depicts a collection of Mother Goose rhymes, as portrayed by some of the time’s biggest stars. Katherine Hepburn is Little Bo Peep, who cannot find her sheep throughout the film. Merry ol’ Hugh Herbert is Old King Cole while the Marx Brothers as his Fiddler’s Three “string” along. Laurel and Hardy get into the act with Stan Laurel as Simple Simon and Oliver Hardy “filling” in as the pie man. W.C. Fields shells out some humor as Humpty Dumpty. The grand finale takes place at the home of the old lady who lives in a shoe where the whole ensemble joins in a big musical number with some real “sole.” Despite the stellar animated cast of Hollywood’s celebrities, the real star for Disney proved to be Ferdinand the Bull, which won the Academy Award® for Best Short Subject (cartoon), beating out Brave Little Tailor, Good Scouts, and Mother Goose Goes Hollywood.
